Some good news were sorely needed this year. Way to go Hungary.

As a Hungarian, I’m honestly proud. When the moment came, people didn’t hesitate. They acted while it still mattered, not after the fact when it’s easy. This wasn’t just another local moment, it showed that even now, ordinary people can still influence the direction of the free world. And this time, we did.

I am happy and proud of the Hungarian people. Im glad you gave the EU another chance and read/saw trough all the misinformation.  I hope Russia and the US get the message and f*** off. Hungarian and Europeans will decide their own fate. And seemingly we want a strong and united Europe trough the EU and shared history.  Is it perfect? No. But youv(Hungary),  has shown we choose cooperation instead of going at it alone. Now go celebrate, you earned it.

Finally some good news for the world, that is being kept hostage by the Orange Menace and his unnecessary reckless war.

iwilltalkaboutguns 3 hr ago +1
I hope we can do the same here in the US in November. I think there are enough of us (and I'm a life long Republican) that want Trump neutered his remaining years in power...his remaining days as a lame duck if the Democrats can take the house and the Senate, is going to be the best punishment for someone like Trump.

Fideez nutz Orban.

Far-Maintenance-1947 4 hr ago
The guy that will replace him is also another far right guy. But at least he's not as bad as Orban.
0
helm 4 hr ago +1
I wouldn't describe the Tisza platform as far-right. It's definitely not going to make Hungary a better place for LGBT-people in the short run, but their priorities are not that of a far-right party. The reason he can appear far right is because he chose not to fight Orban on those grounds. So far he looks center-right to me. For example, he's with the traditional center-right parties in the EU parliament.
1
imjustsurfin 3 hr ago +1
I agree that "far right" is a bit of a stretch, but make no mistake, he's "Right" enough so that immigrants, LGBTQ, and all people of colour, are not going to be popping champagne corks.

He actually conceded. F****** hell, no "it's rigged and fixed" bs leading to insurrection. See America, even fascist old pricks can see the f****** writing on the wall. The disinformation network has failed and it will fail in the long run.

I don't think it works as well in the face of overwhelming defeat
66
krauQ_egnartS 5 hr ago +23
which is the only way an election in November could possibly help the USA  it'd have to be so overwhelmingly undeniable that not even FOX lies, ICE intimidation at polling places, and rampant fraud from compromised voting machines can convince people the Republicans retained the House
23
SolidusDave 5 hr ago +21
High voter turnout is important to keep the craziest in our society at bay.  The majority of us are just normal people, that's why it's important to vote every time you can, even if you think it's just one vote (assuming you don't vote for lying extremist dipshits) "The National Election Office said the turnout by 6:30pm was more than 77 percent, a record number in any election in Hungary" US 2024’s rate was 64% (relatively high for the US, but a slight drop from 2020). 70s range is the normal for western Europe, but can go as high as 85+%. Of course, with multiple-party systems you still get some crazies in,  but not at a ruling majority.
21
Brapfamalam 5 hr ago +9
This is why the Cambridge Analytica model was ingenious. They weren't recruited to instigate campaigns to convince people to vote for their clients. Their model was to convince people it wasn't worth voting, or to vote for the fringe candidate to split the vote. Specifically their first iteration of this was in the Carribbean by creating a fake grassroots viral online campaign called "do-so" convincing the youth to not vote and boycott the election for their client. The hypothesis was that young black left leaning youth could be conned into thinking the election was pointless and both sides as bad as each other - it worked Their template was used in 2024 for the online youth Gaza content and campus protests height on tiktok...which disappeared almost overnight after Trump won
9
helm 4 hr ago +1
100% this. Elections aren't won by the fanatical base alone - there are many groups, and most *cannot* easily be convinced that the sky is green or that fire is wet. What you do instead is to discourage certain groups from voting at all, if you cannot find a key issue to hook that group in [gas prices at the pump, immigration, inflation, subsidies are typical key issues]. What we already can see is that the new angle will be "you voted for Tisza, but it made no difference".
1
DogtasticLife 4 hr ago +1
High turnout won’t matter if they close down all the polling stations in blue counties, are the dems preparing for this?
1
jjpamsterdam 5 hr ago +5
I honestly didn't believe he'd just fold like that, without at least trying to claim foul play or invoke some type of incident to suspend some part of the electoral process. This is quite astonishing and really shows that Hungary probably has a better chance of becoming a country with a free and fair democracy than the United States.

Not just ousts but completely destroyed them. Tisza has more mandates than fidesz ever had, a lot more. Rock solid 2/3 supermajority.

Does anyone know if this results in an immediate policy shift or will it take months to see changes?
36
dead97531 6 hr ago +24
There is a 1 month handover period, fidesz is a caretaker government until then.
24
Flash_ina_pan 6 hr ago +38
It will depend on if they get a super majority. The degree and speed of changes hinge on that
38
BabyComingDec2024 6 hr ago +68
They did get a super majority!
68
Flash_ina_pan 6 hr ago +42
Best news I've heard all day, that should give them the ability to unfuck their constitution quite rapidly
42
20past4am 4 hr ago +5
Also be cautious though. He might get tempted to also be corrupted by this incredible mandate. Don't forget Peter Magyar was in Orbán's Fidesz for years before Tisza. And Tisza itself is conservative right-wing, but just pro-EU.
5
WillMcNoob 4 hr ago +3
Conservative in EU means centrist with some spice, you either get nothingburger ideology or complete whacks like AFD

Wonderful-Pause1048 6 hr ago +6
A two-thirds majority was achieved after the election—that’s pretty clear, isn’t it?
6

The new leader has basically the same right wing beliefs as Orban except he's pro-EU and pro-Ukraine.
2
Crypt33x 3 hr ago +1
For the vetoed money supposed to go to Ukraine, it could go really fast now, if we are lucky.
1
ranbling011 3 hr ago +1
I think the earliest we see any real shifts in policy will in the fall. There's a month long handoved period and the Parliament does not hold session in July and August. The new legalisations will have to be drafted, introduced and everything, every Department will get new leaderships and probably many changes in the higher levels regarding beaurocrats

7
PlanktonInitial7945 6 hr ago
Like the article says, even if they got a super-majority, many areas of the state, media, public administration and legal system were intentionally filled with Orbán loyalists during his mandate, so there could be some resistance to change.
0
dead97531 6 hr ago +6
Tisza has 2/3 supermajority which means they can replace anybody anywhere on a whim. Basically unlimited power.
6
PlanktonInitial7945 5 hr ago -4
The executive branch of government having the power to easily replace anybody in the media, public administration and legal branch "on a whim" would be a clear violation of the separation of powers and a very strong sign that Hungary isn't a democratic country - in fact, it's characteristic of totalitarian states. Do you have any proof to back up your claim?
-4
reethok 4 hr ago +1
They have a two third majority of parliament. They could rewrite the constitution to say anything. Then trying to go fidesz 2.0 would go badly for them because not even fidesz could do that and they already have a built in "deep state", which acts as a balance of powet against tisza.
1
Interesting_Prune513 4 hr ago +1
it will probably still take months

It’s good to see them retake their country from Russian agents. Now they‘ll need to secure the country by disbanding the Russian networks, agents, and financing because Russia will always seek another Orbon figure to use as a puppet. When Putin dies, I hope it’s with the knowledge that his fascist empire is a failure.

DrBorisGobshite 4 hr ago +1
So Trump support for Polievre in Canada, Dutton in Australia and now Orban in Hungary have all ended in the same result, a resounding victory for the anti-Trump opposition. I can only hope this effect extends to Farage as well in a few years.

A little recap of the election: There are 106 voting districts in Hungary. Each district can vote on the local candidates wether independent or member of a party. The w***** gets a seat in the parlament. Tisza won 93 of these districts, the remaining 13 went to fidesz. The rest of the 93 seats are distributed based on the total votes each party gets. Thanks to gerrymandering fidesz almost got as many seats as Tisza, despite behind 15% (42 vs 45). The rest of the 6 seats went to Mi Hazánk, a far right party. 133 seats are needed for 2/3 supermajority, Tisza got 138, despite the blatant cheating attempts fidesz tried to do (threatening and buying votes, transfering voters to districts where they are needed more) The other two parties in this election (DK a left aligned party and MKKP a "joke" party) didn't even get into parliment, which is totally fine, they were only leeches. Each party eligible for election gets funds for their campaign. MKKP has to pay this money back, because they did not even reach 1%. This is in the ballpark of 2 million euros. The current election system favors big parties, small ones just drown in the sea of candidates. For this reason it was extremely important for smaller parties to not register or withdraw from election despite having chance to get into parliment. We had several parties and independent candidates do this in favor of Tisza. DK and MKKP was ridiculed and mocked to no end because they decided to still run despite this. While Tisza worked hard and did an amazing job to win this election, this victory would not have been possible without the countless individuals, investigative journalists, police officiers, soldiers, government employees, victims who came forward and shed light on fidesz' corrupt and criminal ways, turning away their voters from them. PS. Our minister of foreign affairs (who was sharing EU council meeting information with russia) is nowhere to be found, he might be on the run, lol.

I mean he was in power for 16 years, things have to change. But probably the ties to Russia, anti-Ukraine and constant EU vetoes became too much and got too real in the past few years. Then being so close to Trump and having JD Vance literally campaign for you must have sealed the deal (I can't even imagine having a US politician try to sway the elections in a European country being good, let alone a MAGA one).

Modi when?
0
vivekadithya12 4 hr ago +2
What's the issue with him tho? Y'all be saying bullshit. Modi is nowhere near Putin, Trump, Xi, Orban or Munir on the authoritarian scale because we're an actual democracy. 2024 election results was the best mandate we could've gotten - his party is not in the majority and he needs a coalition to run his government rn. In this term, they're considerably refrained compared to last.

What's funny is that both Helmut Kohl and Angela Merkel managed to rule for 16 years without ever needing to underme democratic institutions. Think of these two eras of standstill what you will, but both of these leaders and their party were committed to the democratic process.
