**“I will serve as long as my service is useful; I will do this to the best of my ability, for as long as I can, and as long as the Hungarian nation needs me to do it.”**
Magyar stressed that he is no different than anyone else in the country; and the only reason why he is in the prime minister’s seat now is because millions of Hungarians wanted change. **This is an honor, a moral obligation**, but also a wonderful feeling, he said: “Working for this country is uplifting. I will endeavour to live up to the example set by predecessors such as Lajos Batthyány, Imre Nagy, and József Antall”.
**“We will once again learn to think of ourselves as one nation,”**
**Fidesz politicians will eventually have to face the consequences of their actions**. Péter Magyar said that after coming to terms with the past—and “only after that”—justice must be served. “**Justice is one of the fundamental prerequisites for democratic reconstruction,**” which means that Hungary cannot build a new future on the foundation of covered-up crimes. Hungary will not longer by a country without consequences.
He called on public officials to resign by the end of the day, or by May 31 at the latest, in the interest of Hungary’s democratic renewal. **“President Tamás Sulyok should be first,”** Magyar declared, before spending several minutes listing the times the President, whose office represents all Hungarians, chose to remain silent since taking office, while the camera showed Sulyok’s face as he squirmed in this utterly humiliating situation. **Among others, he reproached Sulyok for not speaking out when Viktor Orbán called Hungarian citizens “bugs,” for failing to stand up for victims of child abuse, and for not opposing the previous government’s unconstitutional decisions and legal arbitrariness. “Mr. President, it is time for you to leave.”**
**Magyar also apologized to the victims who were abused at the Bicske children’s home and Szőlő Street, and to all those who have suffered under the Hungarian child protection system, because the Hungarian state had failed to offer them an apology.** He spoke about how in recent years stigmatization and hatred have torn families apart; how “children grew up surrounded by constant political hate campaigns, and how the elderly lived in fear of the future and of the prospect of war.
By cynically playing into artificially generated fear, politics has poisoned the collective psyche of an entire nation. The Hungarian state must never again do this to its own citizens. On April 12, this era came to an end once and for all”,
**“Hungarians have decided to teach the world that freedom is not a noun, but a verb**—an uplifting deed that nothing can stand in the way of. For this, we owe gratitude to each and every Hungarian”.
He stressed that the most important task in the coming years will be for Hungarians to once again learn to see themselves as one community. He asked everyone to reach out to those who are now disappointed, afraid, and experiencing this period as a loss. **He said: do not seek to humiliate them; instead, listen to them and talk to them, because this is their country too, and their contribution is also needed to rebuild it.**
"A country’s true strength isn’t measured by the number of seats the winning party holds in parliament, but by how it treats its most vulnerable.”

>in recent years stigmatization and hatred have torn families apart; how “children grew up surrounded by constant political hate campaigns
This is the most heartbreaking part. In Hungary, as in the US, this is all that children have known. This has been their normal and it absolutely should not be. Him recognizing it and saying it aloud is so important.

My best friend's mom was inconsolable devastated when Orbán conceded. Crying and screaming because she thought that my best friend was going to be dragged to the Ukraine front lines to his death. A month later and she is still stressed out and having heart problems.

I try to imagine something like this for America.
A reformation built upon the re-application of law and justice.
I wonder if they can do the same?

YES. This 100% reflects my world views.
It is great to see a person in a position of power say this.

As a hungarian i'm happy that Ruff Bálint is in his cabinet
He used to be a political advisor, then lead a very popular weekly talkshow about politics. In that show he made it very clear that he's personally pissed about what orbán did to the country's psyche
I want to think appointing him was no coincidence

I just got back from Budapest and it was awesome. Unfortunately just missed yesterdays celebration and swearing in but it was surreal to be there days after and before significant events. Excellent food and Hungarians seemed genuinely happy to see someone visiting their country. Would love to go back

What is public sentiment regarding the old leader gone? You still have hangers-on pissy he's no longer in power?

There will always be people being mad over anything, but now it does look like that almost nobody actually missed them all that much. Very few were actually happy with orbán, it was more of a fear of how much worse it would be if anyone else was in power. Those who thought like that will have to come to terms that we will not be conscripted to fight in ukraine, nor will we have assault-surgeons transing people in kindergartens either
I was in budapest at the day of elections, which has been anti-fidesz for ages, so this is not representative, but there was a literal city-wide spontaneous carneval as the results came in and the outcome got clear. There were official events organized by the parties as well, but there were people celebrating everywhere

He's the soon to be minister of health, Zsolt Hegedűs, an actually competent doctor with international experience (lead orthopaedic surgeon at multiple hospitals in the UK). One of his advisors will be Katalin Kariko, Nobel-prize winning bio-chemist, who developed the mRNA techonolgy used for the covid vaccines.

Just don't become the new Orban. Orban was open minded too and willing to do good when he first got the power. The he slowly and slowly became more toxic and corrupt...

I mean, I'm sure he can turn into an power-hungry idiot, like anyone can. But I do think he is a different guy, like he already had more life experience before getting into politics. So far what he has shown is that he governs based on polls. But like, he immediately reacts to polls, virtually no delay. So as long as us Hungarians express our will, he follows it, even if it doesn't align with his personal views. Eg. he is not as progressive as some of his campaign points were, but he knows those progressive bits are what the people want, so he goes for it. It honestly almost feels like direct government or something, him and his team reacts to public opinion changes that fast. Thus far. We shall see how it goes in the future.

Hungary needs to limit the PM time to max 8 years. In fact that's something that would benefit every other country.

Big "if true" energy, but an apology is just words. Let’s see the policy shifts before we start acting like the damage is actually undone

Who is acting like the damage is actually undone? The entire article says we need to see his policy actions, not just words, and no comments have implied any damage is undone.
Many of us are just excited so far that a new administration is actually admitting there was damage! Orbán was gaslighting people for so long I think may didn't realize how bad things had become.
Magyar could have started by backpedaling campaign positions and softening his stance. That is a common tactic - attack everything, promise everything, then once elected, stop talking about stuff that you never really planned to address. But he has not done that.
Yes, his actions will need to follow through on his words and that will be the final test. But so far, there is no indication he is anything but committed to the positions he expressed during his campaign.

Maybe it sounds strange for people who have elected the same government for 16 years, but new administrations always love to blame the previous ones. Of course, this is not always a simple excuse and the case of Hungary is definitely not a simple excuse, but it is still a standard thing.

Fair enough. But it is one thing to say “prices are too high” because of the prior admin, or “your life is too hard” because the prior admin.
It is quite something different to say there is rampant corruption of finance, political control of the media, and abuse of power so here are the specific leadership changes, investigations and policies being put in place change the way the country is being run.
Fortunately, Magyar had been speaking in those types of specifics rather than just generic “make Hungary great again” and “stand up against the EU” type vague hollow feel good populist statements.
He was just sworn in. I’d be interested in a comprehensive status check at 1 month, 3 months and 1 year. At 1 month I’m only watching out for backpedaling, at 3 months I’m looking for clear actions and at 1 year I’m looking for the first signs of results.
