Show me one instance of an incumbent conservative winning a national election amidst rising gas prices. One historical example. Over 20 years ago it happened b/c Bush made the case that gas prices would be even higher under Kerry, as Kerry wanted a 50c tax on gasoline that Bush ads claimed would cost the average family nearly $700 per year. Orban doesn't have a case.
He promises to hurt the "right" ppl for conservatives, but that's just a plus to them. They won't make it to the polls b/c they need to save the gas money now. Orban didn't pull the magical lever that reduces the price of oil, so conservatives' feelings currently have big boo boos. Unfortunately for Orban, feelings are all conservatives have to vote with b/c they have no brains :(
He's lost, unless Vance brought the formula to win a lost election with him, but I don't think he came with any of Elon's money. Elon needs it for gas.

Orban (current head of Hungary) has been a key pawn in Russia's arsenal to handicap EU support of Ukraine and to deny progressive policy changes for the EU. As well as enabling Russia in general to bring in more income to keep up its warmongering with the likes of Iran and others who help its "anti west" cause.
So essentially, he's been a major key in keeping all this BS going on that is affecting trade and affordability around the world (not to mention so much unnecessary death/suffering).
So yes, this party taking over would be a very major benefit to the world.

Worth noting that Canada (my home country) has 3 upcoming special elections.
* Terrebonne (QC) - Contested from the last general election. The Canadian Supreme Court annulled the previous results.
* University-Rosedale (ON) - Formerly held by CHrystia Freeland (Liberal)
* Scarborough Southwest (ON) - Formerly held by Bill Blair (Liberal)
As long as the liberals hold both Ontario ridings and win Terrebonne, they'll go from a minority to a slim majority. Although, I suspect the Liberals will hold a minority still. A large number of BQ voters held their nose and voted with the liberals/Mark Carney to defeat the CPC.
They won't have that fear this time around with the CPC having been defeated. I'd expect the BQ to win Terrebonne and Liberals to hold both ON ridings. (Leaving us in the same position as now - a minority government). The Liberals "won" Terrebonne by a single vote. I'd expect the next election to be decided by several hundred, possibly thousand, in favour of BQ this time around.

It’s simply the election being closer and closer and as that window closes the prediction markets “give up” on fidesz turning it around.
Also more and more scandals are surfacing and whistleblowers are giving interviews with their faces. Orbán cannot shadow box Zelensky (or Soros) anymore. There’s police officers, military officers, etc coming forward. Upstanding Hungarian citizens. We literally had our watergate case, secret service trying to destroy the opposition party.
This is shifting the sizable undecided crowd towards Tisza in the last few days
I think we would see the same odds and polls even without Vance visit.
People don’t hate Trump in Hungary as much as say Canada. And most don’t even know or care who Vance is.

Somewhat. It more akin to, for Americans, Rockefeller Republicans suddenly making a comeback to obliterate MAGA with the help of Democrats.
35
Animal_Courier1 day ago
+31
If this happened that wouldn’t be somewhat good news that would be news worth celebrating far and wide.
I used to identify as a Rockefeller Republican, back in the 2010s. It was a throwback even then, but the types of people who would call themselves Rock Reps believe science and would make climate change mitigation a priority. They believed taxes must be progressive to be just, abhor monopolization, and would despise the super-billionaire class (if not the billionaire class). They believed in democracy and the rule of law.
31

Seems weird to say that Rockefeller would be against billionaires when he was a billionaire (in today's dollars).
8
Basileus_Maurikios1 day ago
+4
Rockefeller (or rather Nelson Rockefeller) was very much a man of inherited wealth and privilege, but he understood that allowing the wealthy to control the economy, without limitations, would be destructive and lead to a socialist revolution. Rockefeller wanted to enact policies that could keep the people from straight up revolting. In today's politics, we'd label him as a Blue Dog Democrat.
Personally, I think the Democratic party has a chance of trying to push for Rockefeller Republicans in Deep Red counties, where they'd stand no chance. Where I live, if you have a D next to your name you're politically dead; so Rockefeller Republicans are the next best option for me.
4
AssassinAragorn1 day ago
+4
I wonder if that's our best path forward. It's clear the current Democrat and Republican axis is not representing what people want. The biggest thing most Americans have in common is that they're unhappy with the parties, for some reason or another, even if they're deep blue or deep red voters.
A party with a "consenting adults can do whatever they want" and "doctors have the final say over approving procedures, not the government" social viewpoints with actual fiscal responsibility and not ideological sway could probably win an outright majority of voters. Health and climate policies/recommendations are driven by sound science, anti discrimination measures are actively pursued, and foreign policy isn't antagonist or belligerent. Add decorum into that, and you've got what most people want.

8
galambalazs1 day ago

I would say it is not related at all. Canada was a very direct reaction to Trump.
In Hungary Orban held power for 16 years and it’s reached a tipping point because of inability to control the narrative anymore.
Corruption is rampant, and EU froze our funds because of rule of law concerns.
They simply held the power too long and thought they can get away with anything. A pedophile pardon scandal shook the whole country, where the President and Justice minister had to resign.
It’s been all downhill for them since then. The has country finally seen behind the curtain of Oz. They aren’t protecting children from LMBTQ. They are pardoning friends who help pedophiles in power.
The “fired” justice minister’s husband saw this crack in power and came public with accusations against systematic abuse of power. It was all whispered before but this was the first time somebody from the solid government block was pointing out the crack and instead of pulling it together decided to strike an axe in the heart of it.
Very importantly he wasn’t seen as being part of the “old communist left”, had no associations to the previous government (the one before Orbán) that turned violent against the people. He was Fidesz’s kryptonite.
Since then this guy went around the country giving speeches on top of a truck and became the voice of all those who had enough.
Fidesz lost rural Hungary. This was unthinkable a couple years ago.
Since then the scandals surfacing has been non-stop. And now the whistle blowers are giving interviews with their faces. They are becoming heroes on social media.
So all in all this is not on Trump. Our top dogs got overconfident, complacent and the skeletons started falling out of the closets that were tightly sealed for a long time.

It's a bit complicated. They're trying to take the middle road. For example they don't believe Ukraine is ready for EU membership, but they also wouldn't block aid coming from the EU. They wouldn't send Hungarian military support, but they acknowledge that Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine has a right to defend itself.
Overall they're much more sympathetic towards Ukraine, but during this campaign they're keeping this issue more balanced.

What I'm wondering aside from this is whether there's a crackup in Fidesz itself and a shift in business sectors towards Magyar. Also police, military. There's a lot of propaganda and weird social media psyop campaigns in Hungarian politics but it's my understanding Magyar is actually a conservative and his inner circle are full of guys who are actually former Fidesz who want to retire the old king of Budapest (who has also gotten really fat and stopped giving a shit about anything).
Idk if that's true but shifts within the elite matter a lot. Also Orban just being aloof and his online influencers not even using Hungarian but English and communicating more to the MAGA audience in America (for some insane reason) while Magyar goes out to speak to old aunties in villages about improving their local hospital.

Are you sure it wouldn't be exactly the same as if the governor of North Dakota tried to hold onto power after losing an election and the rest of the US saves ND from the rogue politician trying to end democracy in one of its own states? I don't think there's any chance Orban can just steal Hungary from its own ppl and the EU. Even if he had nukes, which he doesn't, I'd still be convinced of this.
He's losing this election b/c conservatives vote based on feelings, not reasoning, and right now their feelings have boo boos b/c they're paying more for gas. They've got to sit this election out to save gas money b/c Orban didn't pull the magical level that reduces the price of oil, which is the only factor conservatives consider on whether they show up to vote or not. Well yeah, there are other factors such as how much the big man promises to hurt trans/gays/immigrants, but none of those factors come into play if the price at the pump is increasing.

I'm now fairly confident that Tisza will win, but I'm very skeptical about them getting the supermajority. It'd be awesome, but I'm keeping my expectations low. Medián has the best track record of all the pollsters in Hungary, but I find this poll too good to be true.
