I have always disliked they way I look in any picture. I have asked people in the past, is that what I really look like?! They’d say, yes. I thought I was nuts. Today my husband told me it was true. I’m just not photogenic. I look better in person. That’s so strange. Anyone else here know for certain you just don’t photograph well? Have you always thought you were much better looking in your mind out in the mirror? This has to be a real thing.
I’m exactly like this. I hate pictures of myself. Even if other people say I look good, I can’t get behind it in my mind.

True! sometimes if I stare at a picture for too long, it starts to look eve more hideous. This is after 100 shorts and selecting the "perfect photo" that later turned out to be ugly too. Tough!

Same!! I really don't like taking pictures. If I do have to, like in a group pic, I prefer not to look at the pic afterwards cause it'll make me feel bad. I look better in a mirror and in my head and I like to keep it that way, regardless of what I truly look like. I like to think it's always subjective, and everyone will perceive me a bit differently, so I'll stick to what's in my mind.

Taking good portraits requires appropriate camera lens size and distance. Phone cameras use wide angle lenses; those cause distortion that makes noses look larger or faces wider than reality.
Get some professional portraits together, you'll look stunning!

Same! Some people are just more photogenic than others. I don’t think I look good in photos at all, and it’s even more disappointing when I’ve looked in the mirror that day and thought, “Hey, I look good today.” The opposite can also be true. I have a family member who isn’t the most attractive in person but who always looks absolutely beautiful in photos.

Me. Super unphotogenic. I have a crooked nose and it looks ten times worse in pictures. I can look so different on the same day in different lighting/angles because of it. I dread having my picture taken.
It’s funny because I have a friend who I thought might edit her pics a little because she looks different in them but I’ve been with her when she snapped a pic and then immediately sent to the group - so now I have hope that I too look like a different person IRL vs pictures lol

Me! I was pretty photogenic as a kid, but as a teen and adult—nope. The only way I look good is if there’s a professional photographer taking my picture or it’s a candid shot that I’m not expecting, and I’m smiling. Even then sometimes it’s not great. It can help somewhat to reverse the photo (like on an iPhone) so that you’re seeing yourself as you would in a mirror.
2
NikkithetricksterMar 29, 2026

Same, same, same. I’m a nature photographer, so I’ll snap pics of nature without question. But when it comes to my own picture, I’d rather gargle nails than have it taken. I look terrible on camera. 😭

MydoglovescoffeeMar 29, 2026

Wait if they say you do look like your photos then is it the case you’re not photogenic? Or is it your brain sees your image in a mirror as different than how you look in photos? Do people agree you look better in real life than your photo?
Maybe it’s like hearing our own voice recording. Most of us don’t like it because it’s not familiar to us (but it is how we sound).
2
GaliTuliMar 29, 2026

MydoglovescoffeeMar 29, 2026
+2
I see. I misunderstood your OP. Since you’re old enough to have wrinkles do this: Go look at your photos of 20 years ago. I’ll bet you’ll be impressed by how you look compared to how you felt at the time.
And you’re old enough now not to care. Let it go! Photos are for others, not for you anyways. They know what you really look like and you are part of memories being made. Give yourself grace and a sense of humour and stand tall in those next photos!

I don’t mind taking pictures of myself, I think I look pretty good in my selfies. This isn’t just about “knowing my good angles”, I don’t think I’m ugly, like at all really. BUT, I HATE when other people take pictures of me. I don’t think I’m very photogenic (when other people take pictures of me) and it’s so odd.
I will say on social media apps like Instagram, where I obviously post the best pictures of myself, I have been told I look just like my pictures in real life. So idk what it is! But I think I look SO bad in photos and videos, specifically iPhone back cameras

Yeah, it's hard. I dislike attention and posing in public.
I love and treasure photos of people I care about, especially with them, though. (One already passed away before I could muster up the courage to ask if we could take a photo together.) Sometimes I model for stylists/friends, which makes me suck it up.

I don't like taking picture either. I find it pretty boring.
But nobody are "not photogenic".
**Being taking in pictures can be learned.**
You have to try many different positions,
many different angles of the camera.
Try some shot while you are walking...
At first:
\- Don't take only one shot and look the result.
\- Rather look take a series of short without looking
\- in each short try some tiny variations
\- and change the positions
\- Don't overthink, just take the picture
Then look the series. It will not be perfect for sure.
But maybe there is one in the series that can randomly look cool
Make another series based on the picture you liked the most.
Add only some subtle variations.
And continue iterating until you are satisfied.
Then memories the position, the camera angle, the facial expression....
Congratulations, you now have one perfect position when someone take a picture of you.
The more you do this the more you can be "photogenic" and be like instagramers that look good in only one shot

I have a lazy eyelid, inherited from my father. You can’t see it in person but it shows up in photos. I embrace it now. My Dad left when I was young and didn’t really have much contact. It’s something of him and a connection to my ancestors that can never be held back from me or taken away.

I have like three photos of myself from the last five years and two of them are accidental. My friends get annoyed because I'm never in any group photos but I just forget to care in the moment. Someone will say "let's take a picture" and my brain immediately checks out. The weird part is I don't hate how I look, I just don't have the instinct to document anything. I'll be somewhere beautiful and think "I should take a photo" and then just... not.

Yes and I can’t stand being around with people who feel the need to always take pictures. When I don’t want to be in a photo, I worry it seems like I’m being a party pooper or weird because I don’t wanna be in it.
I also don’t like taking photos because I’m a private person and I don’t know where the photos will end up. Like a friend could post it on IG or something and I just don’t wanna be on the internet like that. I have a friend who used to discreetly take vids and pics when we were out because they liked to document their lives for social media. They would take a lot of off guard photos and vids of their friends. I would get online and see myself in her pics and vids and be mortified. Like if I knew you were taking pics I would have at least tried to get ready for the pic. 🙄

My brother absolutely hated getting his picture taken. He refused school photos past junior high. I got a very rare pic with him once in a while. He passed away when he was 22, and I wish I had pictures of him. So anytime I see people saying they don't like getting their picture taken, I usually say to do it for your loved ones at least to look back on someday. Even just for nostalgia reasons.

I hate pictures of myself! I remember in college, my bf at the time grabbed my phone to look something up and I PANICKED and he thought I was cheating. I just didn't want him to see the literal 500 pics I had to take of myself in almost the exact same pose to get 1 or 2 good pics. I'm snatching my phone back from him and frantically deleting things lmao
