Edit: and to answer your question, as far as I know, it does absolutely nothing. Just some sublistnooks don’t allow people below a particular karma threshold to post or comment in order to avoid spam. But you absolutely never need karma points above 2,000 for anything, if I’m not wrong.

Many moons ago I made a stupid joke in some thread that went over the moon, got me 100k karma and awards, people gave me gold for it and I was allowed to join the special gold lounge for a month.
It's all silly but it was fun. I rage deleted my account a few months later as one does, but those meaningless internet points can be nice, every now and again.

I get your pain, I tried to comment for a PC game giveaway and couldn't because I didn't have enough karma 😭 I don't care about it but it sucks not to have it when you need it.
