Yeah it was profitable like thousands of other forgettable movies but nowhere near the success of movies like Independence Day, Men in Black and I Am Legend. They were the movies of the year and in the top of their decade. To be modern event movie that still wouldn't touch those movies it would have to make 800M to over a billion.

There are so many things that surprised me when I watched this as a kid. The fact that they used a mannequin to trick him, the fact that they thought to put the cable under the puddle where he couldn't see it, the fact that they knew that the car was heavy enough to carry Neville's weight, the fact that they rigged a pully system and a snare to actually catch him
All of this made the theatrical ending really disappointing when compared to the alternate ending

They set up really well that the monsters are smart, but they never build up to it. It could have had a really satisfying twist ending that pulled everything together if they kept leaving clues that the monsters are actually intelligent and emotional.

Will Smith was recently interviewed and confirmed that the original ending didn't sit well with test audiences, but I think the reason it didn't sit well with test audiences is precisely because the movie spent no time characterizing the vampires, so you feel cheated when all of a sudden *they're* the good guys and the guy you've been rooting for is the bad guy.

I'm imagining an alternate cut where Will Smith is shown being a bit more sadistic or more of a 'wild man' while prowling through the city, akin to that doctor in 28 Years Later
That would have been a good setup for the audience to slightly distrust the protagonist

I wouldn't mind if there was a twist ending that we were only seeing his perspective either before or after the concussion here and the other half happened as the audience sees. But it makes absolutely no sense in the context of the movie. 3
MysteriousWonMar 25, 2026
+14
In the book they aren't portrayed as visually "monsterfied" as they are in the movie. In fact, in the book, they are capable of human speech and visit his home at night to torment him.
In the book they retain many more human characteristics than in the film and in fact, one of the big reveals is that he found another human woman who he didn't realize was a vampire the entire time.
Basically, society had evolved and started again in this new form. Neville was the only remnant of a species that no longer existed. He thought he was killing the evil to protect humanity when he was actually *their* boogeyman - the reason their families were afraid to go to sleep.
It really was a great story. The movie incorporated elements of this, but by turning the vampires into actual monsters they basically eliminated any chance of the audience getting this message as its hard to look at a nightmare monster and think "what about their kids?"
It's why the ending just could not work.

54
Souljapig1Mar 25, 2026

It was his trap design as we see earlier in the movie when he captures the female “monster” using the exact same trick. The “monsters” observed it and replicated it to catch him. Them being smart enough to do this and establish their own society was an essential part of the book story that the movie entirely ignored in order to make it a mainstream “zombie” movie. The title “I Am Legend” even referred to the fact that Neville became the same kind of monster/legend to their society that he believed them to be. The movie originally ended with Neville coming to understand this, but test audiences hated it so much that they changed it to have humans survive, completely mangling the whole point of the book.

I also thought it was his own trap. Just prior to this scene, he sees the mannequin and it quite clearly moves. That couldn't have been the monsters as far as I can tell.

The fact that he was alone and only had his dog as a companion and had a relationship with a bunch of mannequins, even made up a background for them

11
pasher5620Mar 25, 2026
+7
He had already set up that exact trap before. What makes you think he couldn’t do it a second time? It’s not a massive leap in logic to think he was simply going so crazy that he forgot he set that trap and put “Fred” out there. The movie spends a lot of time setting up that he is fully losing his mind from the loneliness. What gives even more reason to believe this is that he hallucinates “Fred’s” head move as he drives by. It’s not a very far leap in logic to think he forces himself to forget setting up the trap so that he could make Fred seem more real by moving around on his own.
When I first watched the scene before the vampires appear, I remember thinking that exact same thing. It was only when the vampires were revealed that I figured it out. The scene definitely plays out making you think it’s just Neville going crazy.

7
AmbivalentAliasMar 25, 2026

He doesn't talk to mannequins because he's losing his mind, he talks to mannequins to *keep* from losing his mind by replicating human interactions as best as he can.
8
pasher5620Mar 25, 2026
+3
My guy, that *is* him losing his mind. He literally begs one of them to be a real person. Hell, half the reason he stopped to check out the Fred trap is because he hallucinated Fred turning his head. That’s why he is demands Fred prove he’s real. He’s fully going crazy by that point.
3
AmbivalentAliasMar 25, 2026
+8
No I get that his mental state deteriorated through the narrative, especially when he couldn't rationalize how a mannequin relocated. I'm just saying that he went through the original spiel of setting up mannequins and talking to them as a way to fake human connections and routines for his psychological health, not because he already losing it.
I think the shock of the Fred trap was a huge turning point for him "going crazy," but yes he was declining slowly before then.
8
pasher5620Mar 25, 2026
+1
I guess to me setting up mannequins because you are so lonely *is* you going crazy, it’s just the first stage of it. Like, somebody not going crazy wouldn’t feel the need to set up mannequins to talk to because to them that would seem useless, but Neville *needs it* because he’s been alone for so long. We don’t really know when exactly he started doing it, but we can guess that it wasn’t immediately after the city was destroyed. Safe to say his psychological health was already shot at that point, especially with what we know happened I. The final hours of the outbreak.

When I first saw the scene, I thought it was him kinda committing suicide. He sets up the whole trap with Fred, then forces himself to forget he did it because he’s going insane from loneliness. Then he drives by later, hallucinates Fred’s head turning forcing himself to confront that Fred is not alive and that he is all alone, wherein the trap would go off and leave him to die to the vampires.
It was only when the vampires come out and had clearly been waiting for him did I piece together that the vamps had set the whole thing up.

I read the book recently and was surprised that it is completely different.
The characters have the same name, they are by themselves for a few years and did some research on the virus. Thats it, everything else is different. The book is so much better, the character is so flawed which makes him more relatable though not overly likeable, its more realistic and you understand where the title comes from.
I think people might be too used to Hollywood endings for them to make a faithful version.

Yeah, he thinks about that a fair bit. He also doesnt really acknowledge that that is his desire and instead blames the female vampires for, ya know, having female bodies. That's slightly unrealistic, but I guess maybe possible though. The real question is once he gets into the car, and even picks up the dog.
I get why it needed to happen since it's a movie, but your nervous system doesn't just pop back on like a light switch. It usually takes at least 20-30 minutes before you can walk again without looking like a skeleton statue being dragged on an ice rink.

A movie ruined by needless CGI, would have been so much scarier with actual people.

Yeah the CGI used on the environments is pretty solid and still holds up. But the zombies look like PS3 graphics

I recently watched a documentary on this movie and at first they had real people and even hired parkour experts to play the nightseekers but they didn't like how unscary they were so went full cgi/mocap

It really didn't 😄 I came out of the cinema saying the same thing, why? They are infected people so use people? I still don't get their thought process.

I saw it in theaters and you're right that it looked like shit at the time. I remember reading years ago they shot a bunch of the scenes with real people but the director didn't like the way it looked.
The rest of the movie is pretty great, but the creature effects are so goofy it brought my enjoyment down.

"Much truer to the book" is a huge stretch. None of the endings are close to the book ending.

One of the scenes in I Am Legend was filmed in Tribeca (Manhattan) right outside my office. I got to meet "Sam" who was played by Abbey the German Shepherd. She was enjoying some playtime with her handler outside their trailer. She was very sweet and very friendly. Amazing dog.
Here was where the scene of Will Smith was filmed entering an apartment building.

I remember feeling absolutely stressed by this entire sequence.
Now I remember that he had all the blood rushing to his head so even if he hadn’t landed on the knife he would’ve had zero ability to run anyway.
Also the dog. Damnit

I remember seeing it in theaters with my gf at the time. I couldn’t stop sobbing at the Sam scene and I couldn’t look at the screen until it was over. My gf didn’t notice or at least never mentioned it. It’s a fantastic movie but I never watched it again because of that.

Till this day, still one of my favorite performances in a movie. It was disheartening when I finally read the book and discovered how much better the source material was. The performance Will turned in for this movie would have no doubt have been more incredible if the writers had allowed him to portray Robert Neville and his story faithfully.
Truly regretful that the studio decided to cannabalise Matheson's incredible story. I have no doubt that will would have knocked it out of the park 😔

This is probably the best scene in the movie because it's the only one that indicates intelligence and cunning in the dark walkers. In every other scene they're just raging monsters. Which is a slap in the face to the source material.

Is there a cut or streaming service of this movie available with the alternate ending they cut that's closer to the source material? I would gladly revisit this movie on a slow Sunday afternoon if I didn't have to stop it 10 minutes before the end to pull up Youtube to watch it "properly"

That's the saddest thing that they didn't get right. In the book, he doesn't realize it until the end, but he's the boogy-man, he's the scary monster and they're trying to stop him.
Omega Man got it wrong too.
That book is so good.

Man, he's such a great actor.
It's too bad he's ensnared by that awful, awful bald women... from afar it's like she's sucking the lifeforce from a once-beloved man. She got him to be ostracized the same way society ostracized her.
Jada is a succubus and I wouldn't be suprised if she got Tupac killed

I really disliked this movie from the second half onward. Obviously the changed ending was the biggest crime but this scene is up there too. Here we have the smartest man on the planet, the hope of the human race, presented with a situation that could only be more obvious if they'd made a big sign and written "TRAP" on it. He then walks into the conveniently placed dark puddle for some reason, which clearly represents the "X" in this trap. Once caught, he decides to cut himself free without holding on to the rope above the cut, the equivalent of sawing the branch of the tree you're sitting on. Somehow the knife ends up in him and this basically resolves the whole movie. The ingenious protagonist is essentially an idiot. Ironically this would have kinda worked with a version of the proper ending.
