I am “rewatching” ER, but I realized I was seven when it came out.

Posted by No-Accident-3349

I always remembered ER as the show I was allowed to stay up for on Thursday nights, watching with my mom. I just realized it ran for 15 seasons, which means I was probably only seven when it started—and realistically, I probably wasn’t even allowed to stay up to watch it until a few years later. So I’ve probably only ever seen a few seasons. By the time I was sixteen, I was a teenager who wanted nothing to do with being home on any night! Anyway, I’m enjoying watching it like it’s brand new. The nostalgia is hitting hard. The show is incredibly well done—I’m on season 4, episode 1, and completely hooked. I haven’t really watched anything else in the past couple of weeks.

You are in priiiime ER. I just binged it up to about season 13 recently and the 90s nostalgia was so sublime. Random, but it's fun to see cell phones evolve on the show too.

When did it start dropping off for you? I am enthralled with season 1 right now and the number of episodes is insane!

Season 12 is generally considered the worst season, though there are some decent episodes. It improves again after that, but never to the heights of earlier seasons. However, one of my favorite characters doesn't join until season 10, so I still like the later seasons.

Is that where John Leguizamo's character goes through his story? Yeah, that was peak low for ER...his acting style and that storyline did not mesh with ER well, at all.

I had completely forgotten about him, but yes, that's his season.

Yup!

Series 1-8 is top tier television in my opinion. No spoilers but there's some cast changes around this time which meant that I lost some interest. 9-11 are still good seasons though, but not as great as before.

Once Dr Green dies spoiler alert it goes severely downhill after that.

I don’t actually care about the spoiler lol but it’s not an alert if you says it after the spoiler

buffybison Apr 1, 2026 +6
You need to say spoiler alert before the spoiler...

Can't wait for the Hawaii episodes...what season is that?

MikoSkyns Apr 1, 2026 +3
When Mark goes to hawaii? Season 8.

I agree completely. Seeing the charts and paperwork I giggle. When they got the computer and you can hear the dial up
6
bmo5464 Apr 1, 2026 +8
> When they got the computer Its really funny now working in IT and laughing at the tech. When Jerry accidentally "Deletes Radiology", references to the Y2K bug, and of course playing Doom at work.

Hank_Scorpio_ObGyn Apr 1, 2026 +6
And some of the medical terms they use! Hearing people with Down's being referred to as "mongoloids" by medical professionals was extremely jarring.

Me too! It's crazy to me that it went on till 2009?? I remember it around 2003-2004, but I have no recollection of watching it, or anyone talking about it after that. Grey's Anatomy was the hot topic when it came out in 2005, I guess that took over.

I remember being a kid and seeing the school bus crash episode of ER and I was scared of the school bus crashing for a little while after.

bootymix96 Apr 1, 2026 +17
I remember only one thing from ER when I was a kid: when that character (not saying who and not saying when for spoilers, but suffice to say it is a main character in the early-2000s era) got their arm chopped off by the helicopter rotor. Our family saw that live on the first run and my parents were NOT expecting that to happen! Definitely floored all of us.
17
danbfree Apr 1, 2026 +13
Or how they killed off that same character later by having a crashing helicopter fall on them, after already losing their arm from one? LOL Easily the most cornball moment of an otherwise excellent show!

veronica_deetz Apr 1, 2026 +3
Helicopter crashes are like lightning strikes - after the first unlikely occurrence, your probability of being hit again skyrockets

I had never been more shocked in my life than when that happened!

VulpixVixen Apr 1, 2026 +25
I'm currently doing that with X-files - I recognize all the episodes while rewatching, but there was some hazy storylines I'm now just following. I remember waiting for new ones each week - having sleep overs with my bff on Friday nights and we'd watch it together. Then it moved to Sunday nights and it was a special treat to stay up late enough to watch it on a school night, because I was 12!

I remember hiding under the covers when the music came on from the tv in the living room when I was little. When I was older my parents let me watch it but XFiles definitely gave me my first TV nightmares LOL
11
jshly91 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I never even saw the show, but the intro music gave me nightmares. Just so deeply unsettling that it didn't need more context to feel scared.

Anyone remember the primetime TV battle between ER and Chicago Hope?! ER always had Hope beat for the medical drama. Hope felt like more of a precursor to Grey’s with the interpersonal drama

aspecialistinchaos Apr 1, 2026 +11
Network/procedural became so unfashionable, but seasons 1-6 of ER is just insanely good tv.

I regret that I never watched ER; maybe someday I'll get around to watching the entire series. But from what I understand, The Pitt is a worthy successor, and of course Noah Wyle is very involved in both shows. I did binge all of the first season of The Pitt and the second season until I was caught up, and I highly recommend it if you haven't been watching already. Terrific show, but some episodes and scenes are very hard to watch, especially if you're a parent like me.
23
wujo444 Apr 1, 2026 +15
I wouldn't say Wyle was as involved with ER as with Pitt. He was one of the leads and appeared in second most episodes among dozens other characters - but never got to be a writer, director or producer like he got to be with The Pitt. He was only an actor before while now has big creative input in the whole show.
15
work4work4work4work4 Apr 1, 2026 +6
It's been awhile, but I think Wyle has actually talked about this quite a bit in the past, both in how he they handled things on the ER set differently compared to other acting jobs, and how things he learned and saw and did on ER led to him being much more involved in his other projects going forward. Clooney, Edwards, La Salle, and others definitely had way more influence on ER, but it's so fun seeing how much influence growing up as an actor on ER had on him wanting to do The Pitt, and how he approached it. I'm sad the rights stuff all blew up because of the death because I think it killed what would have been way more discussion of the creative process that would have been really fascinating to learn about.

For anyone in the UK who happens to see this, it's on Channel 4oD. You can watch the whole series for free.

I love getting into a series so I was going to wait until the Pitt had a few seasons under its belt. It does look good!
7
Navitach Apr 1, 2026 +3
I can understand that. But since it's currently only in its second season, you may have to wait a while for a few seasons to accumulate!

Cheese_on_it Apr 1, 2026 +2
The Pitt is good but way cheaper. Pretty decaf/smaller in comparison. ER was way more engaging and humane. Different times.
2
arecbawrin Apr 1, 2026 +2
You should give it a try. Early seasons are some fantastic acting and writing...and a young George Clooney! I've often caught myself saying "I wish the Pitt did that" or "I'm glad the Pitt doesn't do that"...I'd think you'd really enjoy it.

Right!? 1994-2005 and Greys just picked up at the right time and still going strong 22+ years. I like greys as well but love how these early seasons of ER are so trauma focused….less dramatic at times and the old tech is just fun to watch and see.

You've got to at least watch through the Africa episodes. I can't remember what seasons they are, but those episodes really opened my eyes. Fantastic. Great character arc.

I too am watching ER right now, I started it on HBO but quickly discovered my hulu has it without the ads.

Depends where you are, people in the following countries (and maybe more) can find it on Netflix: United Kingdom Canada Australia Latin America (including Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico) France Italy Belgium It's also on HBO Max.

I started watching ER when I was young too around its 5th or 6th season. It was after George Clooney left. The serious was absolutely riveting and at the time the series was heavy in syndication so before their was streaming I was able to watch the earlier seasons on TNT which had ER marathons during the week during the summer. A time was definitely had lol

FleaDad Apr 1, 2026 +3
I remember watching it when it first premiered with my mom from season 1. Such a great show. I've watched it twice as an adult. I appreciate how it ended.

vishuno Apr 1, 2026 +3
I did something similar. I think I'm a little older than you but I watched several seasons as a kid on Thursday nights, and stopped watching as I got older. I didn't finish my recent rewatch either. Mostly because I stopped subscribing to the streaming service it was on, but partly because the quality ebbs and flows over the years as the cast changes. There are some stretches that are phenomenal, then some that are just okay. It's one of those shows that's great for recognizing actors early in their careers. Lots of well known actors had bit parts as patients on ER. It might be recency bias but I like The Pitt more. I'm excited to watch the new episode every week.

Same! I was born in 1991 and remember watching episodes with my mom but don’t remember anything about the show. I’m currently in season 10 and I’m still loving it so much. I’m going to be sad once I finish the whole series. Might have to watch The Pitt next
3
Justin0320 Apr 1, 2026 +3
I was 11 when it started and I remember watching the early seasons until I left for college in fall of 2001. Usually Thursday nights were spent studying, working or going out to the bars. After awhile I wouldn’t attempt to catch up on missed episodes. Then I didn’t watch it for years after that until maybe the last season. All before the streaming era, prime Netflix delivery or recording it on VCR.

commandshift90 Apr 1, 2026 +3
I had the same deal with my mom! I’m so squeamish about medical stuff but I loved the special treat of staying up late with her so much that I have such a love for the medical drama…

Rechen Apr 1, 2026 +3
I'm also in season 4 and the same story. My mom used to watch it so I know some parts but never watched much especially not the older I got. A few weeks ago I saw that it was available for streaming so I started watching and it is sooooo good.

I loved ER so much as a kid, I would get the TV Guides with episode info at the grocery store checkout. So much fun!

VampireHunterAlex Apr 1, 2026 +2
That’s the strange bit: My mind has difficulty remembering what I watched live when it came out and what I watched on syndication. I feel like I knocked out a lot of ER before school on TNT, along with reruns of CHiPs and Buffy, whereas after school it was Gilmore Girls and Angel.

ForsakenKingslayer Apr 1, 2026 +2
The show came out a few months before I was born 😂 I remember catching bits and pieces of it as a kid because my mom used to watch it, but she also did her best to not expose me to it because the stuff they show can be traumatizing to a young child. ER was the first show I binge watched on Hulu when I first subscribed to it years ago, my 2nd favorite medical show ever behind House.

res30stupid Apr 1, 2026 +2
Yeah, I remember it growing up... only because it was on one of about eight channels I got on terrestrial TV and it airs once a week. I barely remembered anything save it aired on Channel 4 on Sundays and how big it was when the show ended.

Hahaha me too! It was a say Homr from school and watch kind of show

I literally just started a rewatch yesterday. It's been long enough that I have absolutely no memory of the show beyond just basic recognition of the most prominent actors. Loved the pilot episode. It's aged incredibly well. Great acting, with a very sharp and witty script. The "walking and talking" style feels really dynamic, especially when it shifts focus to different characters in the same scene. I love, love, love the messy lived-in sets; it feels like a real workplace. Just a stellar production all round. My only criticism of the pilot is that it's perhaps slightly too long (it's longer than a normal episode), with a few too many patient vignettes, but I get it's just trying to immerse the viewer in its chaotic world immediately. I'm really looking forward to continuing with the rest of the show. There's so many episodes to watch!

AffectionateKey7126 Apr 1, 2026 +2
I would always watch it in the morning on TNT during the summer. It really is impressive they had the courage to have that one guy be involved in two freak helicopter accidents.

It saw ER when George Clooney was on. It was a great show back then.

PreferenceAnxious449 Apr 1, 2026 +2
I always thought ER was basically just a soap opera set in a hospital? All drama and pretty people, very little substance? What's your favourite show other than ER? Imma need a taste test.
2
AWorldwithoutSin Apr 1, 2026 +4
Greys Anatomy is soap opera in a hospital, ER mostly has a lot of medicine with some drama mixed in
4
PreferenceAnxious449 Apr 1, 2026 +1
A dope opera?
1
No-Accident-3349 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I thought so too, but having watched greys anatomy I would say less drama more medical. Obviously they have story lines to make it interesting but less soap opera. I always stumble at this question. I think Outlander, Dexter, Supernatural and Greys would be up there. Recently I’ve really enjoyed You, Ozark and handmade tale but I like to throw in some fluff and comedy once in a while. Ok I need to go hit the gym now realizing I watch too much Tv!

I just want to see Dr Robby do the Eriq La Salle punch he does during the theme song. Just sneak it into one of the scenes.

VoraciousChallenge Apr 1, 2026 +2
Prime ER was so good. I have this weirdly core memory of the episodes where Lucy and Carter get stabbed. Not so much the actual episode, though that's there too, but I specifically remember it being it being a hot topic of conversation in the boys locker room after gym class.
2
Fran_Kubelik Apr 1, 2026 +2
I am doing much the same! I was 12 when ER started and my mom let me stay up to watch it with her. At the time my bed time was 9:30 so it was a big deal. I started a slow rewatch after my mom died a few years ago and pick up the pace recently because of enjoying the Pitt so much. Just the other day I realized how much of my conception of what it means to be an adult comes from ER.
