Yup, I have a client who created one of the most successful reality car shows and being a car guy I pitched him an idea for a new show. His response was “I like it, what’s the cast?” And that clicked the switch that it’s not the cars it’s the drama that’s most important. Made me sad.

I worked as an editor on a reality show. You know, one of those where they stick everyone in a house and have them compete? The producers/writers met with the cast on a daily basis to discuss the ongoing plot. It was all staged and edited to maximize the drama.

I occasionally worked behind the scenes on a sports based reality show, and the producers would have the talent do multiple takes during their confessionals, while sometimes coaching then on what to say to create drama.
It was gross, largely because these people were actually trying to get a job and were being taken advantage of.

This has been one of the best things about YouTube, podcasts, streaming and TikTok. For years so many interesting hobbys were only appealed to through the lowest common denominators. The excuse for this always being about needing to fit the formatting and business models of film and television. But not that we have these alternatives the lack of a cost overhead means you can just have some guy make a video on YouTube about cars that car guys will like. Or post a TikTok about model trains, or stream for an evening about fishing or something.

Staff of the UK production of “Married at First Sight” have even stated that they managed to match people to well during the first season, which didn’t pull as much viewers as they wished, so for the second season they set out to match people a little bit worse to create more friction and “drama”.
The amount of viewers almost doubled, but the number of couples that stayed together halved. Which was deemed a success by the production team.

One of the few reality shows I enjoy is the Great American BBQ Challenge. I'm not sure if that's considered reality or a competition show (or if there's really a difference there), but it's so refreshing to see the cast members all pretty much get along. It feels very wholesome most of the time and they're just there to show off their region's BBQ. Obviously there's editing to make things more dramatic but from a cast member side it doesn't seem toxic.

These shows are geared towards women.
As such, the stories that people like are the ones where the woman wades through a sea of bad guys, but finds the one good guy in the end.
Also, every good story needs a villain. And as the show is geared towards women, making the villain a man is just an easier sell. Hell, we just have to look at the most recent drama with the Bachelorette, and there are plenty of people still defending this woman even after seeing the video. Saying how he "drove" her to that horrible behavior.

The only reason she went on the show was because her and her friends all thought it would be funny if she tried to enter it. Another of my friends got to be filmed because he was one of the main instructors at a particular location she took the dude to in the episode where the bachelor goes to the girls hometown. Nobody else wanted to do it so he was basically voluntold 😆 im not sure if footage of him made it into the show, but he definitely had cameras in his face. What a stupid article. A producer on the show trys to pretend “oh no, I don’t intentionally hire controversial men with controversial opinions to stir up drama and also provide hate-watch material for my 95% female, 4% gay male audience - instead let’s go with “there are no quality men in the world”.
This is getting tiresome.
I actually do think there are a lot of men who suck but a tv show where you can choose a limited subset of men of course if you wanted to you could have the entire show be literal saints of men. It just wouldn’t make good television.

Not really a question that needed asking. Reality tv needs drama, so they cast for maximum drama. And at this point, it's a very specific type of person who even wants to be on reality tv. You get douchy bros and overly dramatic women. All of whom just want exposure for their socials.

Bc the people that would willingly sign up to be on a reality dating show in 2026 are most likely to be vain, shallow, stupid, and completely delusional. Men and women, no exceptions to this rule.

This entire piece is absurd. I’ve worked on these shows. I’m middle aged. The women are just as shitty as the men, they just have the right politics for this writer. The line included where they say it’s a broader issue that people have lots of cool female friends but not many cool male friends is simply the person telling on themselves. In a sample size this large an entire gender is simply not “better” than the other as a whole.
I say all of this as a diehard Dem who has never voted red in 25+ years at the polls.
