I don't take a drink until my food is gone

Posted by MileHighLifeRuiner

Someone mentioned it was weird the other day, but I think it's fairly common. Are you a sipper while eating or a wait for the end kind of person?

So almost 5 years ago, i was in a residential eating disorder program. Basically where people lived for a while & learned about eating patterns, health from a non diet culture angle, & did a c*** ton of therapy. Our meals & snacks were scheduled, prepared, & portioned for everyone’s specific eating disorder, history, health status, & a bunch of other things We learned a whole lot about the “food rules” we’d created for ourselves that we probably weren’t aware of. Things like eating all our vegetables first to “reward” ourselves with the main part, needing all food groups to be separated & not touching, not putting our forks down in between bites, etc. but one of them was water. We were expected to drink our water throughout our meals instead of the beginning or the end in one go. & it’s another rule people with eating disorders tend to create for themselves relating to feeling full faster if we chugged water first. & if we didn’t have all our water right away, we didn’t deserve to eat the rest So basically, we were able to eat foods & drink water at a variety of times. We could eat a couple protein bites, set our forks down until we finished chewing, then took some sips of water. From there we’d use our spoon for the next food group, put that down, & maybe our hands for something pick-up-able I’m not saying anyone has an ED obviously, i just thought it was a cool way to bring awareness. & there were multiple ED types, but it helped all of us in the long run !

I'm curious about something like this because on one hand I'm sure its good for people with eating disorders but I imagine that if someone had both an eating disorder and maybe sensory issues with food on top of that that some rules might come about to cope with food textures and I wonder how those situations would be handled.

Yeah good question! Where i went, they accounted for this really well. We could make a list of 10 things we ABSOLUTELY DIDNT LIKE For me : Mushrooms Olives Avocado Squash Etc… They would make sure not to give us anything with those at all. Then, we also were given a few swaps during the week (i can’t remember how many, but i never ran out). The point for us was to try everything first, because there were often things we had our own rules around, or decided we didn’t like them at 3 years old. Tastes change over time But, say we tried the 3 bites (or however many), & we still didn’t like it genuinely, they offered a couple swap meals with the same nutritional value for whatever we were “meant” to have. Honestly, a lot of it was uncomfortable, which was the point. Obviously not so uncomfortable that it was unbearable. But it definitely challenged our thoughts around food. I tried a whole lot of different things there, & had more water than ever haha The thing i liked about it was they catered to multiple eating disorders. I didn’t think I’d benefit because I had BED. But it was interesting to see how similarly we all thought about food. We just coped differently. Highly recommend! & i still try to do sips of water throughout my meals, but I’ve not been as strict. Something I’d love to get back to!

Thats awesome to hear! It makes me happy to know that they were understanding while still helping change your perspective on food. I have a lot of hangups around food and a ton of food noise so I might look into doing something like this in the future!
2
Worldly-Criticism-91 Mar 28, 2026 +5
Yesss the food noise is the worst, no matter how much “will power” we have. But also, we learned food noise is an indication that our body needed something. Some sort of nutrient it was low in. They used physiology to help us remove the guilt & shame we had bc of societal diet culture fads etc. We learned how to lean into our cravings & use them as information instead of punishment. & the cravings lowered drastically because my tailored food plan hit all the boxes for what my body needed, not because my will power got stronger. Feel free to message me if you’re curious about it! It honestly was an extremely difficult time. But in hindsight, it saved my life

Desperate-Plate66 Mar 28, 2026 +13
I find this really interesting. But also worry I have an eating disorder now... lol
13
Worldly-Criticism-91 Mar 28, 2026 +5
Well i promise the things i said aren’t to diagnose anyone haha. It’s different for every person, it doesn’t look exactly the same for everyone. The main thing for us was our thoughts around food & water, it was less about the behaviors. Changing our thoughts helped us naturally change our behaviors over time

daydreamersrest Mar 28, 2026 +2
Do I read that right, that setting down the fork while you chew is expected? That seems wild....
2
Worldly-Criticism-91 Mar 28, 2026 +4
It was expected in the context of having a severe ED. The goal was staying present rather than focusing on the next bite before the current one was done

daydreamersrest Mar 28, 2026 +1
I see, thanks for explaining!

RealCrazySwordGirl Mar 27, 2026 +29
My mom doesn't either. I've always thought it was weird. I drink my drink periodically throughout, depending on when i get thirsty 🤷🏼‍♀️
29
bunger_33 Mar 28, 2026 +6
This is my way. Some people chug when a glass is there, some like OP wait until after. I'd call us the normies for sipping between eating. Not after every bite, but when necessary. Eating a meal without any liquid seems odd imo
6
RaizaLowKey Mar 27, 2026 +56
OMG this is my whole life and no one gets it. Thanks for making me feel less weird LOL
56
ComeHereOften1972 Mar 28, 2026 +4
You should still feel pretty weird. That’s weird. :)

schrodingers-canary Mar 27, 2026 +45
I drink often while eating

Electronic_Syrup7592 Mar 27, 2026 +40
I have to drink a lot while eating. Otherwise my mouth and throat get too dry and I feel like I’m going to choke. I take a sip after every couple of bites. I’ve never known someone who didn’t drink while eating.

LovelyDay18 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I don't drink while eating. I have low stomach acid, and if I were to, it would dilute what little acid I do have. It's not that uncommon, either. I would suggest to anyone with digestion issues to first try no water 30 minutes before or 1 hour after a meal along with digestive enzymes. Maybe this will help someone reading this!
2
BourbonLemon Mar 28, 2026 +2
I have the opposite problem. If I don't drink while eating, there's a high chance that I'll get stomach ache later.
2
nhgardenart25 Mar 28, 2026 +1
This is interesting. I wonder if others who don’t drink have this issue and just instinctually don’t drink during a meal.
1
bluemercutio Mar 28, 2026 +1
Do you also have dry eyes? I have sjogren syndrome. My eyes and my mouth are dry because of it, so I need to drink lots of water/juice/tea/whatever when I eat.
1
platetone Mar 28, 2026 +1
I have the same issue! I'm constantly panicked I'm about to start not being able to swallow... not blocked airway, further down.
1
Tinyfishy Mar 28, 2026 +10
I’m weird, I basically cannot stand eating most food without a drink. And it isn’t a lack of saliva thing. We are all weird in our own ways!
10
Efficient_Bench_1559 Mar 27, 2026 +23
I don't drink while eating
23
taidizzle Mar 27, 2026 +4
you dont hork your food down like me and pigs. we thrive on the choke factor only to be saved by chugging water. food takes my breath away literally
4
Future-Ear6980 Mar 28, 2026 +5
That is scary
5
crooked_bodylines Mar 27, 2026 +6
Same, I drink after I've done my meal my wife will sip the entire meal.
6
auldSusie5 Mar 27, 2026 +4
Ohh good, I'm not alone! My in-laws think I'm weird.
4
SnooObjections4628 Mar 27, 2026 +3
Come to think of it, I don't either
3
Okie_dad_1 Mar 27, 2026 +4
I’ve noticed something similar in myself. I will drink through multiple glasses usually of water before my food arrives but rarely need a refill once my food arrives.
4
VermicelliRoutine530 Mar 27, 2026 +3
We're the same, when im eating i just want food, water is needed when im done eating cause when eating you can tase all the flavor...
3
simpleme2 Mar 27, 2026 +3
I had a friend always ask why I ate all my fries before I touched my sandwich. I was just like idk
3
Law_Dust Mar 28, 2026 +3
Why not make it more easy for all? Introducing: THE SOUP !
3
taidizzle Mar 27, 2026 +2
I only drink water when I eat now. Main reason is to prevent choking and sodas should be enjoyed seperately as a treat because those liquid calories don't feel like anything but can add 300 calories to your meal.
2
Desperate-Plate66 Mar 28, 2026 +2
Are you me? I just got comment at work that I dont drink while eating. But i drink a big glass of water after. Apparently thats weird
2
Pretend-Disk3487 Mar 28, 2026 +2
Same here! Because if I drink anything, I feel a bit bloated. I prefer to finish eating first
2
ImaginaryCatskills Mar 28, 2026 +2
Definitely a sipper! Gotta have something to wash down all that deliciousness with. I can't imagine waiting until the end, that sounds torture. What are you usually drinking with your meals?
2
ipissnapalm Mar 28, 2026 +2
Oh thank god, I've finally found someone else that does this. My friends used to tease me about this habit, I didn't even realize I did it until they pointed it out. It's not even like I think taking a sip between bites is weird, I just happen to prefer not touching my drink until the end.
2
CantaloupeKlutzy74 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I don't drink anything while I'm eating unless I start coughing for whatever reason
2
Mundane_Professor596 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I can’t eat unless I have a drink. I literally will just leave my food until my drink arrives. I don’t know how you eat without drinking. I have to take a sip after every bite. If I get a cocktail, that doesn’t even count. I will also have a non-alcoholic drink and a glass of water. I hardly drink anything without food.
2
Danimal_86 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I never really noticed it until a few months ago, but I hardly drink anything until after I’m finished!
2
seattlemh Mar 28, 2026 +2
I drink while eating so that I don't eat too much.
2
Everest_95 Mar 28, 2026 +4
I eat too fast and food gets stick in my chest, I need to drink or I'd be in a lot of pain
4
East-Garden-4557 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Or you could slow down when you eat 🤷‍♀️
1
ani3D Mar 28, 2026 +5
I don't know about the person you're replying to, but I've worked in places where I was barely given enough time to eat, and it was either hork your food or just go hungry, some days. You get trained to eat fast, and it can be damned hard to unlearn that.
5
beamerpook Mar 27, 2026 +2
I wasn't aware that most people prefer to have a drink at every meal. I eat my food, and drink separately
2
OnlyPaperListens Mar 27, 2026 +2
Per my gastroenterologist, drinking during meals dilutes stomach acid and can impair digestion. Of course, the GERD that I see her for also gives me swallowing/choking problems, which requires water. 🤷‍♀️
2
Fidrych76 Mar 27, 2026 +1
My uncle would not allow beverages of any kind at the dinner table. He said it made him everyone chew their food or risk choking. WTF?
1
Dovendyreet Mar 27, 2026 +1
I have a hard time getting through a meal without drinking on the side. My partner doesn't touch a drink while eating.
1
QuestionablePanda22 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I do the same thing (usually pre-game with some water though) and people also tell me it's weird. When i ask why it's always "i dunno" lol
1
smashasaurusrex Mar 28, 2026 +1
There’s a ramen place I go to where I don’t drink any water while eating because I don’t want to waste any space in my stomach. But generally I drink water while eating.
1
NuklearFerret Mar 28, 2026 +1
I normally drink some before eating, then finish after eating, without really drinking in between. This changes if I’m conversing our having a multi-course meal, though.
1
eloquentlyramblin Mar 28, 2026 +1
At some point when I was a kid I was told I wasn’t allowed to have anything to drink until I had eaten everything on my plate, and that kinda stuck with me.
1
tmorse85 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I sip something regularly while eating. I didn't always, but then I had a choking incident that led to other injuries. Now, I make sure to properly chew my food and always have something to drink while I'm eating.
1
Abhoth52 Mar 28, 2026 +1
My mother told me a thing... don't drink during meals. You want your saliva and stomach acids at full strength for a proper digestion of said meal. Neither brain science or rocket surgery... just common sense from my mom. An aperitif prior to a meal is all good though.
1
AmazingJames Mar 28, 2026 +1
My grandmother was always like that. I don't insist either way
1
kungfukenny3 Mar 28, 2026 +1
my dad as and sister are both like this
1
strumthebuilding Mar 28, 2026 +1
It varies - sometimes I drink while eating, sometimes I don’t, I have total flexibility in this regard and neither possibility bothers me at all.
1
fredthefishlord Mar 28, 2026 +1
I srink a glass before, 1 during, and 1 after .. I'm not built for sips
1
Hatecookie Mar 28, 2026 +1
It depends on what I’m eating. If it’s salty or dry, I will drink between bites. If not, I usually don’t feel thirsty until I’m done eating.
1
MelbsGal Mar 28, 2026 +1
I take a sip of my drink with every mouthful of food.
1
Antique_Twist_9131 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Same here. I prefer drinking once Im done eating. If I drink while eating, I get full way too fast
1
TheLastFall01 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Some before, the rest after. Never during
1
Southern_Bus4965 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I heard that is the correct way to be. Less gas I guess.
1
GrungeCheap56119 Mar 28, 2026 +1
At a restaurant, I realize I zone out and drink most of my drink before the food even comes. Usually iced tea or water. At home, I do eat drink eat drink.
1
Randeth Mar 28, 2026 +1
Here and there throughout the meal. Not after every bite, but probably every couple depending on the texture and spice heat of the food.
1
Gizzle99 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I may drink a little while eating. Mostly drink before I start and after I finish.
1
Trash-Left1 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Eat first then fill in the cracks with the drink! Drink too much before eating and you fill up on water and you're hungry too fast.
1
JunkMale975 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I almost ONLY drink while eating. I could easily go the rest of the day without anything to drink. It’s so incredibly difficult when I visit friends and the first thing they ask is “what can I get you to drink?” When I say nothing they insist by listing everything they have and then ask again what would you like? I literally don’t want anything.
1
Timerider42424 Mar 28, 2026 +1
It depends on how thirsty the food makes me, or if I need to wash something down. But yeah, most of my drink is drunk after eating.
1
Doohickey4444 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I just feel like the drink makes you full before you even eat all your food
1
affemannen Mar 28, 2026 +1
Same here, i eat and when im done i wash it down with my drink. If i drink during my meal i might get to full and i want to enjoy it all.
1
Signal-Fan7335 Mar 28, 2026 +1
My mom always said she was a no drinker while she was an eater
1
NeatBrilliant8622 Mar 28, 2026 +1
That’s kinda hard to swallow🤭
1
slutty_muppet Mar 28, 2026 +1
There are some gastrointestinal conditions that are helped by avoiding drinking water at mealtimes and instead drinking it between meals.
1
Loisgrand6 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I sip but rarely finish my drink which is water
1
Accomplished_Garlic_ Mar 28, 2026 +1
Opposite, I can’t eat without drinking
1
nhgardenart25 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I stop and drink water after a few bites instinctively. A dry meal seems it would be hard on the esophagus and digestive system. I will say I am very regular and maybe had constipation only a few times in my life. (60) It actually never occurred to me that people wouldn’t want to drink between bites. I am also a very slow eater. Everyone is always finished before me.
1
jonny5isalive1 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Same. My wife doesn’t get it. According to her it shouldn’t be possible.
1
iMom561 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Me too :)
1
2cbterry Mar 28, 2026 +1
I’m a sipper
1
Reasonable-Mix6327 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I always drink before swallowing😊
1
Confident_Salt_8108 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I really don't like sipping while I eat. Honestly, it looks kind of weird to see someone take a drink with every single bite.
1
slimdrum Mar 28, 2026 +1
I could never finish a whole meal without sipping ice cold water, then after I finish the food I down the rest it feels so good
1
soliloki Mar 28, 2026 +1
If I am sipping on my drink WHILE I'm eating, especially while I'm chewing, that's a sign that I am NOT enjoying the food but I have to finish it anyway (mostly in social settings where I'm expected to feign). lmao
1
ciestaconquistador Mar 28, 2026 +1
I have to or I get hiccups. As did my grandma.
1
Tygie19 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I’m the same. I tend to feel too full if I sip while eating so I wait until I’ve eaten all of it.
1
tobotic Mar 28, 2026 +1
I'll generally drink before and/or after a meal, but very rarely during.
1
driftingfornow Mar 28, 2026 +1
In Polish culture this is the norm
1
Feisty-Influence5464 Mar 28, 2026 +1
honestly you're just playing 4D chess while the rest of us are out here panic-sipping like our lives depend on it
1
vaultpepper Mar 28, 2026 +1
This is me!
1
fairy_thalia Mar 27, 2026 +1
Omg I don’t either and I always get told by other people I eat with why I’m not , I like eat my whole plate then have a small sip to just wash it down 😅
1
microflutter Mar 27, 2026 +1
I have to sip constantly while eating. I trained my brain to tell me it’s thirsty constantly, even after the very first bite. I drink over 2 gallons a day. Somebody help me…
1
karenskygreen Mar 28, 2026
If i eat something solid like pizza, if take a bite or two and swallow then take a drink then i immediately get hiccups, guaranteed. So i have to wait until i am done eating, wait a few minutes, then drink. It sucks because i love pizza and beer,.i mean who doesnt ?.
