And I must say, I am glad I did. After looking for a movie similar to Grave of the Fireflies, I believe I found it and I am dying for discussion of it from others who have seen it.
The parents are much like my adoptive parents in many ways. The woman and her naive bubble and the man who thinks himself caught up on politics, but is admittedly not the best at reading comprehension or knowing the true meaning behind the political subjects he reads. Like my adoptive dad, he prefers to shelter his mind away from harsh realities and his mind seems to be in the beginning stages of old age's forgetfulness. This couple could have been so many our parents.
They made so many mistakes that had you horrified of the consequences, but the gut punch really comes upon realization that even had they been expert doomsday preppers at the top of their game and cognitive abilities, they'd have eventually ended up the same way they did.
And the blink and you miss it details that warrant a second watch are so well done. This movie is a tragic masterpiece. What were others' thoughts towards When the Wind Blows? Did you have the heart to rewatch to really catch the details a second time around? What did you find, if so?
The same author did the popular children's books 'Fungus the bogeyman' along with 'The Snowman', so my school library was all like 'yep, let's put this story about the horrors of nuclear war in the kids library'. I must have been about 8.
If you like the film, check out the original graphic novel. Probably don't give it to your kids though.

I have no kids. I'm the aunt/dog mom that spoils the neice and nephew. I am interested in the graphic novel.

That film wrecked me emotionally. The way it shows how ordinary people try to cope with something so beyond their understanding really got to me - reminds me of my own grandparents who would've acted exactly the same way. I couldn't bring myself to rewatch it yet, but I caught some details about the radiation sickness progression that made it even more devastating the first time around.

Did you notice >! The implication that the rat in the toilet was her intestinal lining and the fact that the runny egg she couldn't eat seems to be foreshadowing this? !< That detail pulls at the heartstrings.

The contrast between the animation style and the subject matter is what makes it so unsettling. It sneaks up on you

It really wakes you up that war can affect anyone. Innocence and sheltered bubbles aren't going to shield you.

The characters are also in a book called Gentlemen Jim.

I heard about that. It makes When the Wind Blows all the more tragic.

Because the directors previous movie was The Snowman which just about every kid of the 80s in the UK watched at school a lot of ill informed teachers/parents did think this would be more of the same thing so just sat their kids in front of the TV for 90 mins of nuclear brainwash

The only movies schools played where I was growing up were Forest Gump, Radio, and Remember the Titans. Sometimes Matilda to spice it up. It grew so tiresome, I still don't want to see any of those movies again to this day. I have seen them too many times.

I was so confused at first by their comment. Funny how someone can mix up a tragic story with a comedy series.
