I got my ancestry results in today and they were so healing!!

Posted by laughlovelive25

I was adopted from another country, when I was a baby, and brought to the United States. I got gifted an ancestry kit last Christmas and the results were so so incredible! I am not of the origin I was adopted from, I am from the country nearby! I have such a small number next to what I thought I was my entire life. I've always hated my facial structure because it wasn't like the rest of the people I'd see from my nationality, even as a kid at national adoption events specifically for my nationality. but I was always told, you were born here, you are this. I googled the results and it INSTANTLY clicked in my head. the reason why I felt like I didn't recognize myself is because I was looking for the wrong features. now, I see it, and am so proud of the way I look. I now feel more complete than I have ever. it makes so much sense to me. now I finally know my story. I may not know what brought my parents together, or what happened, but I know what I am, finally. and I can finally accept who I am. have no one to share this with, so I'm here. 🥳🎉🥂 Edit: THANK YOU EVERYONE!! I did not expect this to blow up like it has! You all have been incredible!

That kind of clarity must feel really grounding. Glad it worked out like that for the op.

Yeah! It definitely answers almost all the questions regarding his/her identity. Knowing your roots is knowing who you are!

As a parent of adoptive children, I completely get your happiness! On a more practical note - I don’t know which test you took, but if you can extract the raw data, you can also upload that into some other ancestry websites, often for reduced prices. Not sure if your purpose would also be to find relatives, but this would increase that chance. Congrats on gaining more puzzle pieces about yourself!

Aww thank you so much for adopting!! Adoption stories are my favorite thing in the world. Your kids are so lucky! I took ancestry, and I was considering paying the extra fee for pro features and I think it gives more info. I had no idea you can extract it!! I'll look into it and see if I can cross reference and get more info!

Good luck! Don’t know your country of origin, but many adoptees and adoptive parents are connected on Facebook groups aimed at this subject in connection to adoption. Try looking for the combination of your country and DNA for relevant groups. Often, someone with good suggestions and experiences has posted their steps/suggestions on the files of those groups. I am not sure about the features of ancestry, we took another test, but there’s lots of info available.

That is so cool. Have you started to learn more about the culture and traditions of your new country? If I was in your situation I'd start learning how to cook the food of your ancestors. I've always known where my grandparents came from even though I never knew them. When I was in my late 20's and 30's, I spent a lot of time learning how to cook the food from their culture. It was lots of fun and I found that I really enjoyed many of the flavors.

I'm starting to!! I looked at photos on Google, and oh my God, my new country is absolutely breathtaking. I am going to try and visit when I can!! I absolutely will learn a few recipes. This was so mind blowing, I just got the email an hour ago. I can't sleep now, my mind is so active!!! I'm sure I'll love the food. I realize I didn't say it in the post, but I am Finnish! I'd love to learn more about the Finnish culture.

Canadian here, but from a place where there are a lot of Finnish immigrants. Finnish pancakes are to die for.

THANK YOU! I'll look into this and see if any place around has them!! I am going to be looking for international grocery stores and calling to ask if they have any European/Finnish food!!

Pannukakku is a kind of Finnish pancake-like dish that is amazing and super simple to make. I will go grab my recipe & post it. I also agree about the Pulla bread, although it is slightly more difficult to make (I use a bread maker). If you can find a “Scandinavian” bakery, they will usually have a variety of regional treats from that area you can try… I have a lot of Finnish ancestry and actual relatives there still. I spent a lot of time around saunas when I was young in Northern Minnesota. I, too, would love to visit someday!

Oooo! Didn’t even know it was my cake day! Thanks!

What is cake day? I assumed it was birthday, but if you didn't know, then I'm guessing it's not your birthday...

Its the anniversary day you opened your listnook account!

Oh, OK, thank you! I wish I had known how to choose my username when I opened it, mine is so weird and cringey.

coolbeansfordays Mar 29, 2026 +3
I was going to say, there’s a ton of Finnish heritage in northern MN.

You betcha! We’re everywhere around here, or at least we used to be.

And Nisu (I hope I spelled that right)!

Oh, nice. I know a little bit about Finnish culture. I really love pulla, the sweet braided bread with cardamom. The family that owned our farm before us had come from Finland. There is an old squared log sauna even.
28
laughlovelive25 Mar 29, 2026 +14
Ooh I need to try that!!
14
InevitableOk459 Mar 29, 2026 +11
There is a kind of grilled cheese is also really popular, I think it is called Juusto. My wife really likes it, but I am allergic to dairy so I have never tried it.
11
Cautious_Gain_9834 Mar 29, 2026 +11
Leipäjuusto, juusto just means cheese 🙂
11
Scared-Currency288 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Oh I know this as Nisu

getting news like that and then not being able to sleep because your head won’t slow down is kind of a nice problem to have

It is partially that, partially my neighbors blasting music with a speaker I can FEEL the bass. And I have work in 6 hours. Sigh.

Russian

Glindanorth Mar 29, 2026 +8
My whole life, I was told I was of nearly 100-percent Irish ancestry. My 23andme test showed I'm also part Finnish and Iberian (Spanish/Portuguese). I find it all to be fascinating!

bellboy42 Mar 29, 2026 +3
I am obviously not saying your results are wrong, but I am surprised that a Finnish (or other Nordic) adoption agency would choose foreign parents. I have never heard of that, adoptions here (I am from a neighboring Nordic nation) are usually done within the country to parents that they are able to do background checks on domestically.

Silver_kitty Mar 29, 2026 +40
The impression I got from their post was that they were born in Russia and got adopted from Russia to foreign parents, which does happen often enough that there are meet up groups for Russian adoptees. They’ve now learned that while they were born in Russia, their ancestry is Finnish.

blackandbluegirltalk Mar 29, 2026 +23
The context we needed, lol. Thank you, I was like this must be by way of Russia, but how? Either way, great for OP. As a Black American I can relate to not knowing your own ancestry.

laughlovelive25 Mar 29, 2026 +4
Yeah, friend, exactly wow how'd you figure that out?

bellboy42 Mar 29, 2026 +2
This makes perfect sense, thank you!

Look up the Finnish pop group KAJ. They were Sweden’s Eurovision entry last year and so much fun. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bara_bada_bastu

I was going to suggest trying learning the language of your origin country, but then I read in the comments that it's Finland, one of the hardest languages of Europe (and I learned German as a Romanian, which was also really hard) I think everyone in Europe loves Finland, personally I love their accent no matter what other language they speak, really good music and bet their food is great too (gotta try that)

I’m an adoptee too and getting an ancestry kit was very healing for me as well. I see you, friend!

Thank you so so much!! It's been so crazy! In the last year, my entire life has changed, and now I'm finally able to understand my past. Finding out I had a sister a year ago, to finding out I'm not even what I thought I was... Wow. Crazy stuff!

My entire life has been plot twists. This was the first one that left me actually speechless. It feels so validating now to finally have the answers I've searched for my entire life!

Yay! Finnish people are the best! (I am biased because half Finnish ancestry)

That’s actually really beautiful to read. I can’t imagine how confusing it must’ve felt growing up, but it’s so cool that everything finally clicked for you. Finding out your roots and feeling proud of yourself like that is huge. I’m really happy for you, you deserve that peace fr. ✨️

I genuinely felt like an alien growing up. I didn't feel like I belonged, even in the community I was in. Thank you so much for recognizing that!

i did one of these and found out my great great uncle invented that thing you put on the end of shoelaces. it was okay.

I don't know if you're joking, but it's really interesting if you're not!

If you're into music, check out Finnish music - metal, folk & choral are particularly strong in Finland (I absolutely adore it). Congratulations on finding a clearer path to your origins!

Ooooh I haven't thought of that!! I'll do that today for sure!!

I have a question. Is it wrong to gift ancestry to a friend who is adopted?
2
dfinkelstein Mar 29, 2026 +6
That's a sensitive question. I think you'd best ask them if they'd appreciate such a gift, directly. Too much potential for unintended harm otherwise, imho.
6
laughlovelive25 Mar 29, 2026 +5
Uhhhhh I wanna say yes but like the other person said everyone is different. It was a WONDERFUL gift for me. Everyone is different
5
Shiny_Green_Apple Mar 29, 2026 +1
Thx. I’m going to gift it.

laughlovelive25 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I hope they gain the answers (and more) that they need and want!! That is so thoughtful of you, as an adopted kid, it's very hard to find people who can understand what we went through and struggle with in our heads. You're a wonderful, wonderful friend.
1
aphraea Mar 29, 2026 +2
This sounds like a wonderful experience! I’m so glad that it’s given you some pieces of your past and also opened up new avenues of adventure for you. Congrats!
2
Sea_Chicken9970 Mar 29, 2026 +2
That's such a meaningful discovery! It must feel validating to finally have some answers about why you might have felt that disconnect growing up. Identity can be such a complex thing for adoptees, and having that piece of the puzzle click into place sounds really powerful. Are you thinking about exploring more about the culture you're actually connected to now?
2
laughlovelive25 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Oh yes!! I researched the culture, and the values I have completely co-encide with their values. As I was reading about the typical Finn, I was finally seeing myself. It was eye opening. I want to do everything to learn more about the culture!!

I’m outside right now, but I’d like to find a way to share it… I just need a bit of time. We had a beautiful day in the 70’s(C), but it’s going back down to the 30’s(c, which is freezing, so I’m checking my camper for any creatures/damage) before the cold comes back…lol

e's a bigger story here - like did you find something you were looking for or get answers to something? Either way, love that for you, those moments of clarity about where you come from can hit different.
1
laughlovelive25 Mar 29, 2026 +17
I went in having NO idea what it would give me. I thought it would come back with a DNA family tree, or at least just give a list of potential relatives. I got that, partially, and on the front page it said I was Finnish!! With a 9% next to the country I was adopted from. It makes a lot of sense to me knowing what limited info I do have. I have a newly found sister and we were trying to figure out how close we are, turns out we are half sibs, and we immediately saw in the area where it compares your nationality to other family members who have taken the test, that she was half something and I was half something then we matched the rest of the countries. Both of us had low numbers in our mother's side, but high numbers on our father's side. It was WILD to see. We were both sobbing

I have a friend who grew up in a super white community, not knowing who her dad was other than what her mother told her, which was that he was American with Italian ancestry. Well she lied. He wasn't Italian at all, he was Puerto Rican. My friend didn't learn this until adulthood by which time she felt like she had lost her mind because it was the first time it had even OCCURRED to her she wasn't Italian. However, she does not look Italian at all. If you saw her, you would most likely pin her as Latinx. Yet, she grew up surrounded by white people and white half-siblings and knew her appearance was different but never thought about race. She said the first time she looked in the mirror after that moment, she just screamed DUHHHHH 😂 She said the realization was like watching a dog walk around on its hind legs. She also had experienced some bullying growing up so immersed in whiteness, that she hadn't understood all the way at the time. Neither had the other kids, it seemed like, who had all also followed along on this Italian thread. Like a community-wide suspension of disbelief. But it things about her hair texture, fuller lips, etc. It put a lot of things into context for her, including the concept of race itself and how it operates in power systems.

laughlovelive25 Mar 29, 2026 +4
Not the gaslighting😭 wow that must have been quite the shock (yet she probably knew, kinda)! The realization is the most crazy thing. Like all of a sudden the puzzle piece clicked in and my life is now complete, after saying, even as a 5 year old "there's an empty place in my heart and I can't find a way to fill it." It's full now. I know my life, as much as I'll ever know. Thanks for sharing that story, that's so cool!! I love that people are learning more and how accessible it all is!
