I grew up with Eva Cassidy… but only now do I really hear her

Posted by siloteam

So I recently rediscovered Eva Cassidy as an adult, I’m 33 now, and it hit me in a completely different way. Growing up, my dad didn’t just play her music, he told her story too, about her life, how it ended far too soon, and how rare her voice was. I think that stayed with me more than I realized. I’m sitting here listening to her now, and something really stood out. The way she can hold a single note and just live in it. It’s so simple on the surface. A clear, high note, no overproduction, no need to dominate the room. But somehow it lands straight in your chest. It’s not flashy, not overly complex, but it holds your attention in a way that feels almost unreal. Like she understood something about music that most people don’t. I’m not saying it’s easy, it clearly isn’t, but that simplicity feels incredibly rare. Just wanted to share that perspective from someone who’s come to appreciate her music in a whole new way.

Her vocals have such great range and expression. She takes songs you may or may not know and elevates them to a whole new level. Check out "Fields of Gold" a song by Sting that combines imagery with arrangement sung to a transcendent height.

They used that version in a cancer charity advert on the TV  Absolutely ruined me  Her singing made my voice ache when I first heard her via BBC radio 4 crikey it must be 20+ years ago, bought all the CDs , then found out most of it was posthumous and she was taken far far far too young. Her version of over the rainbow is fantastic too Rest in peace Eva

She was such a shy and troubled person, she totally hated performing, just loved to sing. She died rather young too, I think. She suffered through her musical career in great pain. There are movies, videos and articles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1ANVD23V70 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SgBTG_HOvMQ

Years ago I was comparing different singers' renditions of the song Blue Skies, and hers was the best.... Love her.

this happens to me with certain albums too. you absorb them young and they just become wallpaper. then something in your life shifts and you put one on and suddenly every word lands differently. had the same thing with her version of Fields of Gold. heard it a hundred times growing up, it was just... a song. listened to it a few years ago during a rough patch and it completely wrecked me. the restraint in her voice, the way she never oversells it. it actually made me go back and really pay attention to what she was doing technically, and then i couldn't stop listening. she really didn't get her flowers while she was alive. glad people keep finding her.

"People get ready there's a train that's coming" ... love her too, such a loss when she passed ❤️

She was such an amazing singer! So much poise and emotion in her voice throughout every piece music. "Time Is A Healer" is one of my all time favourite songs.
