Did anyone explain to Mikey Rooney what he was doing there? Because it sounds like he has no desire to comment on anything, and when it gets through to him that young people might watch it he says "well they should be told what it was like, cuz this is real cinema." Like yeah - that's why you're here. Go ahead and tell us.

I worked on a commercial shoot with him in the late 90s. He was a complete and utter a****** in *every* single possible way.

What’s wild is he’s essentially there to jerk himself off and he can’t even do that. Just sounds pissed off someone wants to glaze his work. Just bizarre.

So, essentially, his jerkiness conflicted with his jerking, no?

I love this. "He's just a cranky, old f*****." Back when this commentary was being done we were just starting to label everything and everybody's debilities. We have reasons why people are this way now, but you used to get a lot of people like this when I was younger. Just mad about being put out to be out of a routine.

I don't see anyone else mentioning this, but I think he was very unwell - he was a victim of pretty intense elder abuse. From what I remember he was basically tortured and held captive by his wife and stepson. That went on for years. He testified about it at 90 years of age.

I met him in the early 00's when he was invited as a special guest in college. He was a complete prick.

he's just annoyed that the interviewer lead with this "short" thing and Rooney is obviously sensitive abt that. And, considering this episode focused on that, Rooney was pretty much unplugged from the interview.

You have to understand that, aside from Mickey Rooney having an inflated ego, he was pretty elderly by the time he recorded this and was known to just make shit up during interviews. Say what you will about Mickey Rooney, and much of it can be valid, he had one of the lengthiest careers in film and TV and saw everything from the end of the Silent Era to being one of the biggest stars in the world to starring in low-budget Spanish films about elderly men who act like babies and breastfeed. (Seriously. Look up The Milky Life.) In fact, his earliest credit was a hundred years ago in 1926 and his last was from 2017. Fascinating dude.

> (Seriously. Look up The Milky Life.) [OK, I will.](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103206/?ref_=nm_flmg_job_1_accord_1_cdt_t_60) *Retired billionaire, Rooney, feels his family loves only his money and not him. He plans to live as an adult baby with his wet nurse, Sagebrecht. When thieves break into his mansion and hit him on the head, he starts to grow younger.* Allrighty then. Looks like you can watch [the whole thing on Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1irDymhEbQ0) if you like.

I met him briefly at the back lot on Warner's during the Full House years. He was wonderful. Fast forward a few years, I met his daughter who was equally lovely. I told her my one brief interaction with her father and she said he would remember it (and she would call to tell him). His kids seemed to have rather normal, well adjusted lives considering his celebrity and their mother's murder.

I love Mickey Rooney (his appearance on The Simpsons is brilliant), but Dana Carvey tells a story in the SNL oral history about doing a sitcom with Rooney back in the early 80s (before he was on SNL). He describes him as behaving exactly like this all the time. Carvey said he would get so sick of hearing this kind of shit, he'd take extended lunches and go watch Eddie Murphy rehearse at 30 Rock.

I remember him doing his Rooney on SNL a few times, and it felt really defined by the real-life experience. “I was the biggest star…in the WORLD. Bang, zoom! In the WORLD.” These days, I find it all very sad. My wife and I watched a noir he starred in from the fifties called Drive a Crooked Road, and he was so poignant in it that it broke our hearts. I think it’s still my wife’s favorite noir.

#"...They are watching S*** Things, not this."

I really like to imagine the “s*** things” reference is to something really tame like What Not to Wear or some TLC bullshit that he stumbled across on tv and didn’t understand.

Damn, you weren’t kidding! Less than 30 seconds in: > No, I don’t remember anything about it…wish I could help ya… > >I DON’T REMEMBER! >IT WAS TOO LONG AGO!! I literally have tears in my eyes right now from giggling at his immediate outburst.

Setting aside obvious answers like he had dementia etc. What the f*** did he think was going on? He seems angry to be asked questions? So what did he think was going to be happening here?

What?! This is a terrible interview. Mickey can't even remember this. He's got that chronically irate thing that some elderly men use to compensate for being confused all the time. The interviewer was trying desperately to hold his hand through the whole thing and still couldn't get him to say anything substantial.

He “recorded” the track or “taped” the track or “produced” the track, not “did” the track. 🙄🙄🙄 We created descriptive verbs in our language for just that purpose.
