I love Master & Commander Far Side of the World

Posted by srennen

It's been one of my favorite movies for some time. I love that it is at once historical, adventurous, realistic, full of action and interesting thought provoking dialogue... Its also one of those movies that reaches out, grabs your arm, and pulls you back in time to experience something that you otherwise never would. I also love the acting in this movie and it's really top notch. Can't think of one bad performance, just cast members with fewer lines that are usually also memorable. Lastly it's quite symbolic, and the messages it conveys are worth thinking about. (Brotherhood, Fatherhood, protection and care for those under you and weaker than you, as well as sacrificing your life in service) Highly recommended. I'm not even a huge ship guy or particularly interested in the historical time period, it's the characters and story that I really love. I have one (small) gripe with it though but I don't want to give too much away. You can watch it on YouTube for free. (Shout-out to the OG that posted it)

Great thing about this movie is that they pulled bits from six or seven of the books..loads of tiny vignettes that make the relationship between the sailors almost....sweet. That said, Russell Crowe is too handsome and fit to be an 19thC sea captain who eats beefstake for breakfast and has a pint of wine, port or Madeira with every meal.

bobrobor Mar 24, 2026 +14
In the books he was grossly overweight and always trying to lose it via daily walks on the deck :)

Only according to Stephen! Who was a 7st midget. Jack is variously described as being 6’ tall and between 15-18 stone. And powerful enough to lift a 14 stone parson through the lubbers hole, so chuncky might best describe Jno Aubrey…
10
plastikmissile Mar 24, 2026 +3
And has been described as handsome by many women, especially when he was younger. Now Stephen is universally described as short and ugly. So if anyone is miscast it's him.

He was spry for sure, though often huffing and puffing

Always been an enormous fan of the film and caught this behind the scenes doc that was fascinating and I had never seen. Will probably interest some others:  https://youtu.be/rgQpWBdY098?si=rwwiYXxojJmwYwnF For example: they purchased an actual ship and refitted it for the film (one of the reasons it even happened was because the ship happened to be available for purchase). Thats the ship they used to shoot at sea. Then they created a completely new ship for all the shooting on the wet stage. Its mesmerizing watching them build it and the attention to detail throughout production.

theboondocksaint Mar 24, 2026 +17
Many of the things you like about it come from the original books, so if you, or anyone else here, enjoyed the film and like to read, I 100% recommend the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O’Brien On top of being well written and entertaining, the man dedicated his life to accuracy, so you will learn more than you ever wanted to know about early 19th century sailing than you ever wanted to
17
CriscoCamping Mar 24, 2026 +5
Here to second this, as emphatically as I possibly can. I have read through all 20.3 about 25 times, the last 18 years. For 10 years almost constantly, was just my calming/centering time each day before sleep. Then maybe 5 years of having this, another fiction, and a non fiction book on a rotation every few days. I watched the movie a year or two before my (ex)wife brought me the \*Post Captain\* paperback out of the town's recycling. I did not really connect them together, for a few years.
5
TheKiltedStranger Mar 24, 2026 +2
“All 20.3”? Can you explain this numbering for me?
2
CriscoCamping Mar 24, 2026 +3
There are 20 complete novels, really just one continuous one, and POB died while writing the unfinished last one, working title of '21'. Its available with his handwriting rough draft, and some edits as he partially typed out the few chapters he had semi ready.

Heavy-Employment9916 Mar 24, 2026 +79
Master & Commander is genuinely underrated and doesn't get nearly enough love these days. Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany have this incredible chemistry that makes their friendship feel so real and lived-in. The way it balances the brutal reality of naval warfare with these quiet character moments is just chef's kiss The violin/cello duets between Aubrey and Maturin are some of my favorite scenes in any movie - there's something about musicians connecting through their craft that always gets me as a guitar player myself. Plus the practical effects and ship work still holds up amazingly well compared to a lot of modern CGI heavy stuff What's your small gripe with it tho? Now I'm curious but dont want to spoil anything for people who haven't seen it yet
79
TwistedGrin Mar 24, 2026 +36
Reviews seem to average around 4/5 stars. It was nominated for 10 academy awards and won 2 of them. What is your definition of underrated?
36
tedfondue Mar 24, 2026 +22
This also isn’t a newfound appreciation, it had consistently stellar reviews upon initial release.
22
Mildly_Irritated_Max Mar 24, 2026 +19
Yup. It was never poorly rated. It wasn't super successful at the box office but was loved by those who did see it and it grew a significant following on DVD as word of mouth spread. Today it is one of Reddit's fav movies, brought up constantly.
19
LABS_Games Mar 24, 2026 +10
And if it weren't for Return of the King (deservedly) cleaning up at the Oscars, Master and Commander would have won a bunch more. The other best picture nominees were Mystic River, Lost in Translation, and Seabiscuit (lol). I think Master and Commander would easily take that any other year.
10
Mildly_Irritated_Max Mar 24, 2026 +3
Yeah, nothing was winning with ROTK in competition and the academy deciding to reward the whole trilogy by showering it with hardware. (Personally, I think M&C is better than ROTK)
3
Mildly_Irritated_Max Mar 24, 2026 +24
"Underrated" on Reddit means "I hadn't previously watched the movie but didn't think it looked particularly good so everyone else must have been meh on it too but now that I have watched it and discovered it's fantastic I'm going to show how special I am by proclaiming it great against the hordes of detractors, which I assume exist but I'm not gonna actually pull up it's RT, Metacritic, Wikipedia, or IMDB page to verify" Like "Unknown" means "I hadn't seen/heard of the movie before so no one else must know of it either and I'm not gonna Google to verify"
24
Brave_Mess_3155 Mar 24, 2026 +3
It didn't do well at the box office. came out the same year as lotr. And while there are over 20 other books in the series to draw from for a sequel it was just a one and done.
3
LCJonSnow Mar 24, 2026 +7
It wasn't received well at the box office. While it made it's production budget back, it didn't make a profit. To your point, it was critically well received, even managing to take a couple Academy Awards in the year LOTR ROTK was in play. But to the general public, it's not a well recognized movie.
7
devillurker Mar 24, 2026 +2
Not to mention someone calls it underrated on reddit every other month
2
srennen Mar 24, 2026 +12
It was that I thought they focused a bit too much on the "jonah" concept, I think it could have been cut down a bit more. But I hesitate to say that because it weaves in a lot of character arcs with it. If someone asked me if it really hurt the movie though I'd say no not much
12
Pertolepe Mar 24, 2026 +13
Was gonna say, I actually think it's incredibly important. The navy has a tonnnn of superstitions and Aubrey is a navy man through and through. When Paul Bettany questions it he says something like not everything is in your books. And their luck does turn once he's gone . . . coincidence? Something to their superstitions? He didn't have the confidence to command. Meanwhile the kid loses an arm and leads a boarding party lol. Also sparks the conversation about order on the ship and not letting things slide . . . The more I think about it the more I respectfully disagree lol.  Also shout out to my girlfriend being cool with me upgrading our entire home theater over the summer purely in anticipation of the 4k steelbook then watching it with me in addition to the kingdom of heaven 4k release lol.  F*** we still have to rewatch warfare now that I think about it.
13
HustlinInTheHall Mar 24, 2026 +3
It's the big b plot of the movie IMO, it has to stay so there is internal conflict on the ship. They could've added something about spying like in the novels but it would just make the plot cluttered, without something internal it's just an Us vs Them vs The Ocean movie, which would be good but less interesting IMO. The Jonah plot really gives 6-7 of the character actors room to shine.
3
juni_que Mar 24, 2026 +3
Came here to mention the musical duets. Apparently, RC learned the violin to make the scenes convincing.
3
xoogl3 Mar 24, 2026 +3
I'm a fan of the novels and the movie is in my top five all-time list. The minor gripe I have is the casting for character of Bonden (and his diminished role in the movie). The Bonden from the book is a tough, big guy, a bare knuckle boxer, a prime seaman and Jack's bodyguard. Billy Boyd, the actor who played him brought none of that to the character, and to be fair, there was hardly any screen time for the character. On the other hand, Killick was so perfectly cast that when I re-read the stories, I only imagine Killick from the movie in my head. The runtime for the movie was 2H18M. I would have happily sat through a 3 hour runtime if they had taken the extra time for some subplots focused on the secondary characters (with a properly cast Bonden) and a little bit more on the Doctor's extra-curricular activities.
3
Creative-Doctor3118 Mar 24, 2026 +2
Yeah agreed about bonden, although the actor did do the role justice, he wasn’t physically suited to the part. Bettany also comes under fire for not physically embodying Maturin, however his acting and chemistry with Crowe makes up for this imo.
2
juni_que Mar 24, 2026 +12
I can't with the little blond kid. I love all his scenes, but he's especially adorable in the one where he is drawing insects with the doctor.

I love this movie and all of its class and details. I actually emailed one of the main makeup artists about how many of the sailors had these distinct check-mark scars on their faces and asked what the significance of that was and here is his response: "Good observation. It was definitely a choice made and the thought was that because they fought with swords, many would have scars of this type -- from getting jabbed or swiped with the tip. The characters with those kinds of scars were the one's who were most likely more aggressive in battle. I hope this helps. Keep watching with keep eyes. Cheers... Barney"

How have I not heard of John Carter? With Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe and Mark Strong? Just added it to my watchlist.
3
Mikethebest78 Mar 24, 2026 +2
The never ending story of John Carter but Disney didn't care enough about it to market it and bitched when it lost money. Now there were some great movies that year [List of American films of 2012 - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_films_of_2012) but all of them got better promotion then John Carter. Who the heck goes to see a movie in March? Its strange because I saw the movie in theater 3 times and every time I went more people were there just never enough unfortunately.

My wife and I took an anniversary getaway to a beachfront hotel, and one night it was raining. Instead of getting bummed out about it we decided to open the porch door and the windows and turn off all the lights and watch master and commander, and having all of the wet sea air float into the room while we're watching the movie was very 4D cinema

My son got married in San Diego, last year. When my wife and I flew from the east coast to attend the wedding, I had one non-negotiable “must do”. We went to the maritime museum and I was able to stand on the Surprise!  As a bonus, I was able to bore my 7 year old grandson by having in depth discussions about rigging, knot tying and generally miserable conditions on a sailing vessel.  I read the books, years ago and went to see the film day one. They are some of my favorite books and the movie is easily in my top 5.

One of my all time favourites. Saw it on its initial theatrical release, university campus had it for one of the weekly movie nights, which was convenient because I was gonna go see it anyway and the university tickets were 1/5th the price. The book series is also awesome - although personally I found the land portions sucked the energy out of the stories whenever they occurred. The Sea portions more than made up for them though.
2
luckyjackalhaver Mar 24, 2026 +2
All of Peter Weir's movies are great if you haven't explored his filmography yet. My particular favourites are Witness and Dead Poets Society.
2
Theatrepooky Mar 24, 2026 +2
Without question it’s one of the best movies ever made. Everything about it is incredibly detailed and beautifully brought to life. One of the, if not the highest achievement I have ever seen on film.
2
dumbBunny9 Mar 24, 2026 +2
Such a great movie! Unfortunately it proved how cost prohibitive it is to film on the water. The movie was so perfect in so many ways, but it couldn’t make enough money to turn a profit. Such a shame that it happened to such a great movie

I think its implied that he looked through the ship's logs of the Acheron, where all of those things would've been written down. In the movie, they mention multiple times about noting things in the ship's logs.

To Lord Nelson? To Lord Nelson 🥃

It's a magnificent movie. Such a shame that it didn't get a sequel or two. I think it was overlooked at the time because of Pirates OTC. I had a coworker I lent my DVD to when it came out who was a fan of POTC, and he did not like it, saying it was boring. I think POTC "spoiled" him and he wasn't able to appreciate something more cerebral with the complex characters and story. Don't get me wrong, I love the first POTC, but Master & Commander is simply sublime in every way possible.

I rate Master and Commander as one of the greatest films ever made. It’s a near perfect film in every way in my opinion: cinema at its finest. Acting, plot, setting, props, action, costumes, stunts, character development, even a cunning last minute reveal. It’s all just awesome.

Good movie.

this movie is so underrated, it’s one of those where you start it thinking it’ll be slow then suddenly you’re locked in. the vibe and characters carry it hard, feels way more real than most movies like this

I’ll agree with probably most of what anyone here will say about what they love in this film. But for me, it’s the young Midshipman Lord Blakeney (Max Pirkis), the youngest officer, whom moves me the most. [SPOILER ALERT] The way in which Dr. Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany) takes him under his wing and engages him on entomology, and the way Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) relates to him with disciplined respect and gives him the responsibility of defending the ship, to which he steps up, is so moving. The way in which this young boy endures the surgery to remove his shattered arm, and how Captain Aubrey gives him the book on Lord Nelson, who had also lost an arm. And then the way in which he takes part in sewing up the burial canvas for his slightly older friend, Midshipman Calamy (Max Benitz). After insisting that he wanted to do the sewing with his remaining arm, he looks up at Able Seaman, Awkward Davies (Patrick Gallagher), an older man to which he is senior, asking, “Can you help me?” Boom. Every time I’ve watched this. It’s like a mighty cannon blow right to my feels.

Pirkis was fantastic in this and then stole the show in Rome. And then quit acting, other than a couple little Indy things in the mid 2010's. Went behind the scenes on the business side of the industry.

Mr Blakney it appears you have the making of a naturalist. Sir should you be getting up? Mr Blakney are you a doctor as well?

Great movie. Awesome to put your surround sound speakers to work too with the cannonball battles.

One of my favorites. Top notch acting, story, set and the whole movie is almost hypnotic.

About that small gripe you have with it… is it at the very end when they’re playing the song? Aubrey stops strumming the violin on screen, but it keeps playing for a couple seconds haha. I was so mad at my brother when he pointed that out! It’s also one of my favorite movies as well.

I absolutely love it. Such a fun watch. Also highly recommend the books - the movie takes a lot of small things from the other books

If you’re interested May 23rd is Wet The Swab Day. This year will be the 223th anniversary of Jack Aubrey’s commission as a Post Captain. If you like the movie I would recommend the books. r/aubreymaturinseries

the fact we never got a sequel is genuinely one of hollywoods biggest failures. there are like 20 books in the series too

Check out the series Black Sails. I also love MC, never heard of this show until last year, watched all seasons in a few weeks. Similar vibe, you’ll see!

Rewatched it at the cinema a couple of weeks ago. Really good film, but I was unreasonably irritated by the opening text describing Napoleon as "master of Europe" in April 1805, 6 months before Austerlitz and 18 before Jena-Auerstedt.

I say the phrase "subject to the requirements of the service" all the time when there is something that I'd rather not do but I know it's my job to do it. I don't think anyone has ever recognized it.

HorusHearsay Mar 24, 2026 +1
I saw it when it first came out, in the theater, and completely fell in love with the movie. I took multiple family members and friends to see it. I saw it five times in the theater and have watched it numerous times since.  My friends and I wakeboard and still jokingly refer to the "Articles of War" for rules on the boat.  I also use the term "butcher's bill" when referencing a large bill.

It’s a masterpiece. For myself, possibly the finest, most elegant film to come out of the studio system in the last 25 years. Classic I will revisit for untold years to come.

The set of books by Patrick O’Brian - 20 in all - are amazing.I’ve read them many times now, once every few years. Some of the sailing jargon is a bit hard to grasp, but the two main characters are so engaging it doesn’t matter to me.

Gyn_Nag Mar 24, 2026 +1
Watch *The Terror* for a similar vibe.

Great movie, it's a pastiche of a couple of the original books, of which there are a bunch (21). The Aubrey/Maturin books by Patrick O'Brian.

This movie has one of the best audio mixes in cinema. The sound is just so f****** good
1
azaghal1502 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Yeah, watching the movie feels like going on an adventure. And even the (usually mediocre at best) child actors nailed it.

It's rare that great original source material (in this case Patrick O'Brian's amazing novels) meets the right director and an ambitious enough budget^(\*). It happened in this case and the result is a masterpiece. I only regret that the it didn't turn into a proper franchise, despite an abundance of source material. It was a series of 20 novels. \*The other great example of this is the new Dune movies. Though Tim Chal does not come close to Russel Crowe's performance.

BabiiTwinkle Mar 24, 2026 +1
This movie is like a hidden gem, loved by those who have discovered it and overlooked by those who haven't. It's a shame it didn't receive more recognition, but I guess it's just not mainstream enough. But hey, more for us, right? And as for your gripe, let's just say I've already mentally prepared myself to overlook it for the sake of enjoying this masterpi

I loved this movie. I've read that this was intended to be the first film in a Mastercand Commander franchise. Unfortunately, it apparently didn't do so well at the box office, and any plans for more were scrapped. That's a real pity because I'd definitely pay to see more Master and Commander films.
1
DrGrabAss Mar 24, 2026 +1
That’s probably because it’s one of the most perfect movies ever made. It should not only have won a best picture award, it should receive a lifetime achievement award for still being better than most movies that come out today.

Pour one out for Mister Hollom. May your cannonball be light and your lungs full of air.

The books are amazing. The film did an amazing job of capturing that. I’m disappointed that we didn’t get more movies.
1
El_diablo_blanco_27 Mar 24, 2026 +1
The books are my favorite literary series of all time. I like that the movie was a mash up of a few books to make it more palatable to non readers. Bettanay and Crow are perfect casting as well. They both capture the look and feel of the characters in the novels. If you can handle the naval jargon the books are an amazing experience and an in depth look into the British Empires dominance of the sea in the colonization era.

Read the books (Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick OBrian). They're vastly better

The Patrick O’Brien books are even better.

It's one of those films that if I landed on it while channel surfing id rewatch it to the end many times. It's a film I never get tired of. Sadly it didn't do great at the box office although I did see it in the theater originally.
1
Captain_Aware4503 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Poor Russel Crow. "The Nice Guys" and "Master and Commander" are two films that deserved sequels.

Zebras_lie Mar 24, 2026 +1
This is one of the finest action movies made. I'm so glad there's more people discussing it. I read the entire series because of this movie.

I saw a historian talk about the film and whats unsettling is how young some of the officers were and yet how accurate it is. Weir didn't gloss anything over. Exceptional film.

ikickedagirl Mar 24, 2026 +1
If you have a decent system at home, the bluray is one of the best sounding discs you can own. I love the beginning where you're in the hull and you can hear water splashing and wood creaking all around you. Very immersive. From what I understand the fairly recent 4K release was not as dynamic.
