I just love love love Rooster. Steve Carrell’s character Greg aka Grg reminds me so much of Michale Scott except here he is a bit more sensible. I am on episode 4 and laughing my heart out. As a die hard Office fan, It’s so refreshing to see Steve Carrel,s character being unapologetic himself and unintentionally offending others. I don’t know what others say I am finding it hilarious.
EDIT - Sorry i was too hyped watching the show when i wrote the post. The show name is Rooster and Steve Carrell plays the role Greg in there. Hope this makes it easier for some people to understand.
I wasn’t sure at first, but once you get into the rhythm of the character it really clicks.

I feel like this show would have benefited heavily from releasing the first three episodes at once. It's good, but it didn't grab me after the first or after the second. "It's Steve Carrell" is the only reason I went back. And I only did that because the HBO banner image reminded me about it

The first three episodes were *crazy* rushed in terms of content. I felt like there was 8 episodes of content packed into those episodes. I just wanted to grab the director and get them to *sloooooow down*. Throw in some establishing shots here and there. Let a moment breathe. There wasn't even that much happening, but the pace was somehow frenetic all the same.
It has settled into its rhythm much more in the last few.

Really? I was sold within like 5 or 10 minutes. Usually it takes me some time to warm up to a show, but the show grabbed me immediately. It has very sharp and witty writing, combined with Steve Carrell as a character similar to Michael Scott. How can you go wrong with that?

Rooster is an odd show. I don’t think I’d go around recommending it to anyone, but I’m also making sure I keep up with it each week.
It feels kind of like show that would come on right after whatever prime time show you were actually interested in watching, that was just good enough to keep on the TV while you decompress, and then after months of watching it you’re now invested even though it isn’t something you might have cared about initially.
Except it’s the premium version of that that doesn’t require a lead-in show and gets you comfortably invested after only an episode or two instead of a few months of half-watching.
It doesn’t really have a specific hook beyond the cast being mostly spectacular, and everything else about it is exactly good enough to be enjoyable, which leaves me really enjoying it but being unsure who I would pitch it to or how I would pitch it beyond “The cast is extremely charismatic.”

I honestly feel the opposite. It's a low stakes, lighthearted show that takes places in a broadly enjoyed setting (small town, idyllic university) and doesn't try to do a whole lot more than being warm and funny. It's not something I would evangelize like The Sopranos but it's about as uncontroversial and broadly suggestable a show as you're going to find.

I asked the same question above when I said it was a brilliant comedy well written and acted. I loved "Nobody wants this" but I wonder if people feel the same way. I loved "Ted Lasso" I think these all fall into fun enjoyable comedy. I need a break from the " Yellow Stone" Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness , Mob land shows. Text you intense if you watch one after another, you need some gravity some light comedy that's good fun

I like it. It's not my favorite Bill Lawrence show but it's good.
My only issue is I'm not really sure what the point is and it feels like the characters are all too happy too quickly. Which is a problem with the recent season of Shrinking too. Also Shrinking got to the problem of spreading stories too thin and Rooster is right there already.
Like is the story about Carell connecting with his daughter who is going through a messy divorce? Well apparently not since she got back with her ex for now. Is it about Carell reconciling with his ex, who is a big deal at the school? Is it Carell trying to become a competent teacher? They kind of gloss over that after his first few class scenes.
Carell's daughter is way too forgiving with her ex and the whole situation is kind of fucked up. Either she's incredibly oblivious or she doesn't care as much as she pretends to about the girl he got pregnant. She seems way too comfortable with how the situation is.
I assume the end of the season will be some big blow up about the pregnancy but otherwise I really don't see what storyline I'm supposed to care about. Carell doesn't seem to care about being a teacher. Also his storyline feels just as important as others, like the one teacher trying to become dean. Which again is another problem Shrinking has where the main character doesn't feel like the main character. Although it took Shrinking three seasons to get there but Rooster has been spread too thin in just the first season.
I enjoy it. Carell and the Lawrence regulars have been great. It is a pretty funny comfort TV show. I just really hope they start telling an interesting story.

>
> Like is the story about Carell connecting with his daughter who is going through a messy divorce?
No, not really. He and his daughter weren't estranged. He's just a content but aimless guy falling in to a little adventure in his life.
> Well apparently not since she got back with her ex for now.
I mean, no? They're going through a messy propably-divorce.
> Is it about Carell reconciling with his ex, who is a big deal at the school?
No? She was literally a one episode guest star.
It's just a show about a dude being a bit of a fish out of water because he's taking a job in an environment he's unfamiliar with. I admit that there are some quirks to the divorce plotline (that dude is just *way* too much of a piece of shit in every single interaction to be credible as a likable character) but ultimately it's pretty consistent with IRL breakups, where the aggrieved party will rapidly take back the cheater just to make the hurting stop for a second. Also the daughter character is framed as a total pushover living in the shadow of "big deal" parents.
I agree that Carrel doesn't feel like the "main character," but I don't see that as a fundamental issue. It's an issue with Shrinking because the show seems desperate to abandon its premise to rebrand itself as "Best Friends club with tears and Harrison Ford" monologues, but Carrel's character was never really set up to be the dramatic center of the show. If anything he's an outside observer, bumbling his way through established dynamics and a strong culture that he doesn't really belong to.

I think this show has the worst tendencies of the other Bill Lawrence show (Ted lasso and Shrinking, except the charms of the cast fail to make up for the shortcomings
It just so desperately tries to land jokes in every scene. The other shows at least let the real, serious moments be real and serious. This show undercuts everything with jokes. It's just missing a laugh track. The people behave so ridiculously ridiculous. Like no, no middle aged professor, even a visiting one, is hanging out in the student dorm or letting a student be his roomie. Not without giving off serious creepy vibes. Or how the show doesn't notice it's pretty gross to sleep with your ex who's cheating on his baby mama. Instead, it tries to make it all cutesy and charming
The show is skating by on its cast alone. It's pretty terrible.
But you know, that's just like my opinion, man

Yeah it's a really enjoyable show. It's maybe got a teensy bit more "shrinking" to it than I'd like. But if that's Bill Lawrence's formula, so be it.

The first season is a pretty haunting meditation on grief and how even *starting* the process is a journey, but that you owe it to yourself ot do so.

1

i dont use their platform and even if i did it really doesn't matter what they categorize stuff, the content is what categorizes the show. Bear was supposed to be a comedy but everyone who has watched it knows it isnt and just has some comedic scenes

Ok then here you go:
*Shrinking is widely considered a feel-good show, balancing heavy themes like grief, loss, and mental health with heartfelt humor and personal growth. It is a "dramedy" that explores character evolution, making it deeply relatable, often having viewers laughing and crying within the same 10-minute span.*

What’s funny is that my wife and and I said this is the first post-office show where we see Carrell’s charm, but it’s not like he’s playing Michael Scott.

I love this show so far, Steve Carrell and John C McGinley are both top 10 all time sitcom actors IMO.
Also, I recently read a biography of Kurt Vonnegut and interestingly enough, when he was in his 80s, he moved in with his daughter in Massachusetts and when the admins of Smith College found out that a famous novelist was living in town, they offered him a teaching position. It went over exactly like in this show except they fired him due to complaints about his tendency to make less than politically correct comments

YES! That was my issue as well. Give it some time to breathe, man. Introduce the concept and the main characters. Do some establishing shots. Let us catch our breath.
The whole time I was watching I wanted to force the director to sit down and watch the first episode of Community, which is so well paced. The show has settled into its pace a little more, but it felt like the first three episodes were just RACING to get everything established. Those first three episodes could easily have been spaced out to 8.
My two other structural issue with the show is that they missed the most obvious opportunity for interesting conflict/dynamics, which is to have Lauren Tsai's character be a student in Greg's class. She is just kind of off on her own little island not interacting with anyone except Archie and occasionally Presiden Mann. As it stands, the main character of your show has LITERALLY not had a single interaction with a principle cast member, which is not necessarily the sign of a well-structured show. It would be so easy to have President Mann say that the Biotech firms were interested in her, but were worried that her education was not well-rounded enough and she needed to take an elective. Or just have her be an aspiring writer from the jump (why is an aspiring biotechnician at a small liberal arts campus in the first place?). Even better: make it so that Greg doesn't *know* who Sunny is, have him take her under his wing, and THEN have it be revealed she is Archie's mistress. It is so easy it practically writes itself.

Yeah but I already see it happening. Like the son-in-law. Why is everyone nice to him? He is a complete douchebag - sleeps with a student, gets her pregnant, leaves his wife, then goes and sleeps with her. A person like that in real life would be shunned by everyone, but here its all happy-smiley "Oh look he speaks with a British accent so its all good".
2
Chataboutgames3 days ago

The treatment of that character has been absolutely *bizarre.* Like early on they pretty firmly established him as "okay he fucked up big time but he wants to fix his marriage/redemption arc."
And in every scene since he's been the most irredeemable piece of shit imaginable. On issues big and small he finds a way to maximize shittiness per line, which makes him hard to take seriously as someone who might be better. That said
> but here its all happy-smiley
I don't think this is true? His ex wife is still struggling/in love with him, and is obviously getting something out of him trying to win her back. No one else is aware of what he's doing, or is especially nice to him.
