i moved into a new place last week and i'm still living out of boxes

Posted by EarlyUnhappiness

finally got the wifi fixed but the rest of the house is still a mess. i have a mountain of boxes to go through and honestly i am just too lazy to fix them right now. i know where my clothes and my laptop are so the rest can probably wait. how long did it actually take you guys to feel settled after a move? or are you still living out of boxes like me?

When I was in my early to mid twenties I really didn't mind and it usually took me up to a month until I was fully settled into a new place. I'm mid thirties now and have a wife and child and we moved into our house a year ago and were settled in the next day. Priorities shift and I don't need things like "unpacking" hanging over my head in addition to everything else.

I was similar in my twenties although I’ve always liked to get my place set up as quickly as possibly. In my mid 30s now, single with a roommate (living together for 2.5 years) and we got everything set up and unboxed on the first day. I just like home to feel like home as soon as possible and looking at unpacked boxes gives me anxiety.

hey guys, what motivates you to actually set those up? recently moved too but thinking about so many boxes i have to unpack it really is overwhelming me like i keep thinking about what to buy in advanced before unpacking this and that

My motivation is just to have my spot be set up as quickly as possible. Moving sucks, as I said in an earlier comment, I moved 13 times in 12 years. It’s just an urgency for me to feel at home so I keep at the boxes until it’s done. It might be a long day of moving but it feels really good once it’s over.

Honestly, just go at your own pace. Everyone is different. I moved 13 different times from 18-30 years old (I know it’s a lot)! So I got used to moving things quickly and getting adjusted as soon as possible.

Last time I moved, the last moving boxes were discarded in maybe ...3 months or so. I think it was this big box of blankets or similar, and the box itself nicely fit to the cabinet anyway. But yeah, moving is hell. A monumental task that just drains every drop of energy you have. You'll have this fake sense of completing something when you have moved all the stuff into the new place, and then you realize that you need to go back and tidy up the old place. If I ever were to give advice, one would be that "get a suitable place to live in the first place"

The wifi being set up is the real win. I remember taking about a month to fully unpack after my last move. Once the essentials are covered, there's no rush. The rest just happens slowly when you stumble on a box and think might as well.

Honestly, the Wi-Fi being fixed is 90% of the battle won. I moved into my place over a year ago and I still have one ‘mystery box’ in the corner of my closet that I refuse to open. If I haven’t needed it in a year, do I even own it? 😂 Enjoy the laziness, you earned it after moving week!

Honestly, that sounds pretty normal. I feel like most people end up living out of boxes way longer than they expect after a move. As long as you’ve got your essentials sorted, the rest kind of gets unpacked gradually. It usually takes a few weeks before things start to feel properly “settled,” especially once you get into a routine. No rush though, better to do it at your own pace than force it all in one go.

It takes however long it takes.
