I've noticed that I spend a lot of time in my room scrolling on my phone and always end up disappointed that I didn't do anything more productive with my day. What are some fun outdoor activities that I can build a habit of doing each day?
I take a short walk, about 2 miles. Even if I don't get anything else done that day I don't beat myself up if I get my walk in and it doesn't take hardly any time.

Very small if you want it to last. Put it on your calendar at a specific time every day. Set a very small goal for the week. Walk to the end of the driveway, walk past the house next door, walk to the corner. Up the goal weekly.

Walking is great exercise. It’s what our bodies are designed to do. Start taking it easy and work your way up. Don’t rush it. I’ve seen people be successful doing it. Any amount outside is a positive. Have a goal - which would be up to your personal situation. Good luck!

Walking a bit and back home is still getting out of the house. You don't have to fall under any kind of distance number. Just don't push yourself to hard at first. I did that before and then remember I had to walk back instead of only pushing myself forward.

I think that's a mistake I made too when I started trying to get back into it. I used to walk so much that I thought I'd be able to pick up where I left off, and that was definitely not the case 😅. It also put me off a little bit too because it ended up being painful and not as enjoyable as I remembered, so taking it slow and building up is the way to go.

I have chronic pain and my feet could literally be propped up touching nothing but air and they will still be throbbing in pain. I had to walk the pup the other day, my ankle also had sharp pain that day and I started the walk limping and hating every step of it. By the end of the walk I noticed the pain went from a 7 or 8 to a 3. I wasn’t even limping anymore as I didn’t need to “baby” my foot and ankle.
I always thought it was ridiculous when people would say that walking helps, but I actually am a believer now. So, agreed with others, start small, a couple blocks, enjoy some scenery to distract you from any initial pain as best you can, and then when you’re near home, reassess and see how you feel. Try again the next day and see what happens. Might be helpful to you as well. Just don’t over do it and strain yourself though!

That's my problem too, I get in the mindset that if I did 2 miles OK last time, I should be able to increase to 3 no problem and so on until I take the fun out of it. Then all of the sudden you are doing 5-6 miles and it's a drag.
Now I'm trying to just feel good about 2 and not get so competitive with myself about it.

Walking is definitely best as a slow burn. Slogging back home after doing too much (especially in the summertime) is the worst! 2 mayyybe 3 miles hits that sweet spot of enjoyment and achievement without being arduous.

Get a dog or volunteer to walk a neighbor’s dog. They are great motivators to get out of the house and everything is much more interesting than just walking up and down streets by yourself. Most dogs also meander and sniff around, so you can go slow or take breaks as you go. My doctor was pleasantly surprised when all of my bad numbers came down after I got a dog.

How about putting a time on it rather than a distance to start. Set a 10 minute timer, when it goes off, turn around and go home. Once that’s easier set a 15 minute timer and then once you’re up to a time that works for your day you can increase your distance.
The aches and pains will improve as you move more.

Drive to a place with a walking park walk as much as you can sit down rest and then walk back to your car if you can stop and do some stretch stretches that would be good.
Go to the library find a book sit in a spot and read an actual paper book, they also have magazines and other reference materials. Use it as an opportunity to learn something new.
Volunteer somewhere one day a week. It will get you out. It won’t cost you money except a little bit of gas if you stay close to home.

I'm getting back into walking after many years. I started walking to cafe that is about a mile away. I get a coffee and sit for a few minutes enjoying it then I walk home. As I'm getting fitter I walk more indirect routes so that the walk is longer and longer.

I do 3-4 shorter walks for a total of 3-4 miles. I have a dog to walk, so that helps. But recently while out of town without the dog, I just HAD to get out there for a walk. Once it becomes a habit, your body wants it! Good luck.
Bonus points if you can walk in a park, next to a wooded area, or through a green space.

Same, mine is a dachshund mix so I figure with his tiny legs he's ready for the doggy Olympics, ha ha. Weather permitting he get 4-6 laps around a small park near the house, plus my own longer walk at a bigger park nearby.

Ummm so I started doing something in lockdown that I still return to now and again because it makes me happy. There’s a park in my city where there are loads of birds and squirrels.
I go to this one quieter spot, sprinkle seeds and nuts, prop my phone up facing the food, stand about 15ft away then trigger the camera from my watch to take cute pics. It is very chill and wholesome ☺️

Well, before doing this - even though it’s not a particularly unusual bird - I had never seen a bluetit before, and I love them! They’re so pretty!
I only thought of it because once, walking through the park, I could see the remnants of birdseed that someone else had left there, and saw the squirrels creeping up to snatch it. I was back the next week with a gigantic coffee and a bag of seeds, lol 😍

Get out in nature. Seriously. Grab a simple c**** backpack to start. Throw in a few snacks and a water bottle. Find the nearest nature trail. Go. Follow the signs. Walk until you feel like you are just getting tired. Find a log. Sit down. Drink some water. Eat a snack or two. Hang out in the quiet. Then walk back. Don't bring earbuds. Just enjoy nature. Listen to the birds. The animals thrashing around. It is so peaceful.

1. I honestly prefer being alone in public sometimes. The purpose is to get myself out of the house, not necessarily socialize. There’s a time and place for that.
- as a side note to this my local coffee shop has a lot of folks working on things alone as well, so it feels quite normal.

If you struggle to sit down with a physical book, audiobooks are a great alternative! My ADHD friends prefer them because they can also do other things while listening. Also to tack on to the above about going for a walk, an audiobook or podcast can make it more engaging. There's also audiobooks that are called graphic audio, and they kinda act out the book but vocally? It's crazy haha. They'll have different VAs for the characters and actually make sounds like sword clashes or foot steps. It's really cool.
As for book suggestions, if you're into fantasy I would recommend brandon sanderson's cosmere series. They can be intimidating length wise but they're really fun and easy to listen/read. Bonus that all of the books are set in the same universe but on different planets with different magic systems, and the deeper you go, the more connections you find. And the community is really lovely as well. Lots of theory crafting haha. If youre interested, I would suggest starting with mistborn: the final empire.
The red rising series is really fun light science fiction.
Brent weeks is also a great kinda easy to get into fantasy author. Lightbringer series is really fun, but the night angel series is good too.

I’d say chose a book that matches your interests. Don’t feel the need to pick up heavy, classic tomes. Maybe light fiction like Midnight Library by Matt Haig, Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, Full Moon Coffee Shop by Mai Mochizuki, Eevie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes.
I would also recommend a book you’ve read in the past that brought you joy (for me, the Harry Potter series)
Pick up anything mildly interesting and just sit with it. I put timers on to encourage me to a specific end (start with 15-20mins, I usually do 1hr)

Came to say this. I take my dog for a walk, when we are in the woods I sit down and read a book and the dog runs around. Fortunately my dog doesn't run far and always stays close you can let him go off leash and he won't run away.

Any time in nature and any time in sunlight will be a boost to your moods and health. Even scrolling in a chair outdoors will be better than hibernating indoors. Walking would be a further boost. Set yourself some goals. Start with something you can easily do so you get a sense of accomplishment and then set a new goal each week or month.
I listen to audiobooks while I walk. You can get them free through your library. Learn about subjects you are interested in or listen to the latest thriller. Or listen to music, another mood enhancement.
Take up birdwatching. Once you start paying attention, you will be amazed at how many birds are around you. The Merlin app will help you identify them. Check out a library book to learn more about the ones you see.
Have you tried geocaching? It can be lots of fun but will require some driving or biking to reach new caches eventually.

Setting the goal will help you stay accountable to yourself. No one else needs to know if you don’t want them to. But saying to yourself, “today’s my day to walk a mile” or whatever distance or length of time you choose, makes it a more real obligation. Even though it’s an obligation to yourself.

Aim to walk 20 minutes a day for 4 days a week. Ten minutes to somewhere and ten minutes back. Your street, a shopping plaza, a park. Bet you will want to double the time you are outside. Outside is so much better than exercising indoors. The ceiling is higher! The walk will clear your head. Things you couldn’t solve before, will suddenly have solutions.

Those are shin splints, and they can hurt, combo of better shoes (more cushion), and slower pace/mileage build up will help. Walking is the same rhythm, pick a time and just make yourself go do it (even if it requires setting an alarm) rebuilding a habit is hard in the beginning

I actually lived in Myrtle Beach, SC! We were able to see the sunrise over the ocean and not the sunset. I enjoyed that and never imagined I would leave. Kinda discovered myself later on, got honest about who I am. Living on a farm in the middle of a secluded state forest has been barnone superior exhalation for me. It's soooo private. We are able to trail on private land or public land.
It is like we are in our own little world. Sometimes I am in awe that America is so large that there are uninhabited areas. You know what I mean? Like the luxury of privacy in this country is still available and that blows my mind now that I am older. Imagine living in an overpopulated dystopia or like metropolitan India compared to like... A private acre. Like I thought the suburbs were the shit, but I understand the rage and hype behind country living or like living simply on a big ass property.
I can't describe how intimate it feels to be fully clothed in pajamas and hiking boots, no one can see me... but we stare at our surroundings and we are so free. It is more intimate/private than nudity. The wind blows and the only possible smell is fresh wind. We look up high and see the airplanes, but they can't see us. He locks eyes with me while we hold hands in the middle of this giant field, just a gravel road beneath and he sees his companion & somehow hormones convince him I'm beautiful just like that. No makeup, no fancy clothes, just an average woman to a man way out here in the country is a luxury to a good, wholesome guy. He doesn't expect much, he's just happy he has someone with him in life. I'm glad I feel the same way.
This may sound questionable, but one of the reasons I am so in love with my boyfriend is because of the beautiful lifestyle we have. We are able to afford it and everything.
Have you ever had someone ask you what you would do if it was just the two of you on an island, deserted together? There are moments out here where I have thoughts that escape society/reality and it's like... I actually understand what that could possibly be like.
I know I'm gushing to you; I am attempting to share a lovely series of thoughts rather than brag. I have never been happier, friend. I was in a deep, ugly, depressed f****** hole for so long.

It's more fun that it seemed at first. I look for wildlife outside like I'm at a zoo. Binoculars can be c**** but they aren't necessary. The Merlin app is free and will tell you what bird it hears, and give details about said bird. I end up going outside often just to see what I can find that day, any given season.

Ok so I have the bird seed and I have the bird house & feeder but they are still in my house. Please give me the words of wisdom to begin this hobby! Do I just put the seed in the feeder and hang it up and sit there for 6 hours? How far away from my house does it need to be? Where should I put the houses? How far up? How far apart from each other? Ok first of all, you got this. Put the feeder somewhere you can see it frequently without disturbing them. Outside of a window, but not right next to one because collisions. Fill it early in the morning, and around the same time each day at least once per day. If there is some left in the feeder when you go to refill, dump it on the ground and refill with new. They will come, and they will develop their own routine around when food is consistently there. (Sorry in advance about squirrels. They are a never ending battle.)
I've never tried bird houses. I know they don't usually nest near food sources, so put them elsewhere on your property - up a tree or fence post, etc away from the feeder.

Make yourself go outside and walk every day. It doesn't have to be a long walk, it doesn't have to be a walk somewhere special. You just need to get your body outdoors and make it walk, make it as simple for yourself as possible, but do it every day. Start off small, just walk along your street, set a timer and walk for 5 minutes in one direction, then turn around and walk home. That's 10 minutes of daily walking achieved. Then increase your walk in one direction to 10 mins, then turn around and go home, that's a 20 minute walk.

Heres what I like to do:
1. Get a jump rope- put on some tunes and jump rope for a song or 2. (The dollar store is a great place to find a cheep jump rope, or your can make your own). Start slow at first (I suggest 5 mins and also make sure u do a cool down) , but after a while you can easily get your 15-20 mins of cardio!
2. Find a grassy area, put a towel or yoga mat- and find an easy stretch or meditation video on YT. My favorite is by Tone&Tighten [9Min Daily Stretches](https://youtu.be/t2jel6q1GRk?si=8T_ZecpHMZBljWEB)
3. Go for a walk. Not sure where u live , but even going for a walk around the neighborhood counts as out door time.
4. Get a bike- might be some $ to invest- but some times you can find a used bike for free or cheep on FB market place or Craigslist
5. Go outside with a book, sit in the sun or shade and just read for 20-30 mins. If you plan to sit in the sun- be sure to use some SPF or wear a hat to protect your skin.
6. Sidewalk chalk! - another good find at most dollar stores
7. Have elderly neighbors? Ask them if you can walk their dog, mow or rake their lawn, sweep their porch, or shovel snow for them. You might even be able to make some $ off this- but honestly doing this as a wholesome deed can fuel the soul.

It’s amazing to notice these little seasonal changes in your neighborhood as you walk around. You can also make your own scavenger hunt for any random walk: a crow, a pink house, a bicycle, a kitty in a window, etc. Also you can’t go wrong with just sitting in a sunny warm spot outside and letting your mind wander. Rooting for you!

What’s your ASL? (Just kidding) But seriously, it depends a lot on your location and ability. Where I live, we use Pokémon Go and walk each night down to the pokestop and back. On nice days we go to the park and finish a trail on Pokémon go. You can also camp, swim, walk/run, hike, kayak, bike. Each new hobby will have its own startup cost.
Are you unemployed?
If your problem is wanting to feel like you’ve done something productive through the day- then I would recommend finding an online course to get a certification for a technical job in your area. Billing, p*******, lab, ultrasound tech, MA, LVN etc. If you are a dude I would check quick oil places or shops or factories, they usually don’t mind taking on a doofus (unskilled) to change tires or whatever.
Local libraries usually have free events too!

Sub out the scrolling with listening to a podcast.
I dunno about you, but I HAVE TO do something while listening to a podcast, I can't handle just listening sitting still. If that isn't the case for you, you may need to set a personal rule about when/where you listen to podcasts.
I end up either going for a walk or doing indoor exercise when listening, because that is about all I can do and listen well. I can't do complicated shit like cook and listen.

This may sound weird, but I like Maintenance Phase.
Weird, because they debunk a lot of weight loss ideas and I learn fun things like how the numbers for calories (how many calories per pound of weight loss, how many calories per gram of fat or how many calories per gram of protein) are all from some dude in the \*1950s\*, the math has NEVER been redone, and a few studies have suggested the numbers are wrong.
They also go over the weird diet fads, weird exercise fads, and generally quote scientific sources to debunk things. Including a bunch of stuff about how labeling menus with calorie counts does near nothing for weight loss but DOES harm people with eating disorders.
I am trying to exercise more for ageing well and I am trying to lose weight - but a LOT of things on the internet will try to make a person feel bad about not trying the various fads and this podcast is both educational and a bit of an emotional antidote.

Maybe try cycling, rollerblades, or skate boarding? Or heck, even heelies. I’ve been having health issues worse than usual lately so I got myself heelies to give myself a light form of exercise more fun than just walking.
Mind you, I had a pair when I was 8 (18 years ago), but shockingly the muscle memory was still there. My fiancé had never had them before, but it didn’t take him too long to learn!

I had to walk a lot to keep sciatica pain at bay last year and ended up getting really into photography. I like having purpose to walk around and finding things worth photographing works great for my creative self! I started just using my phone but now I’m getting into analog(film) photography and everything and it’s a fun new hobby. I like the film because the imperfections are what make it interesting and I’m not very good at taking photos, my hands shake too much.

Walk while listening to a book on tape or fun music. I would listen to fun, upbeat musical theatre and it really made me enjoy my walks more on those days I wasn’t super motivated. You don’t have to walk fast! Maybe tell yourself that you will go out for 20 minutes the first day, or whatever works. I worked with overweight people and said, “can you give yourself 10 minutes?” One person who was morbidly obese causing severe mobility issues, got excited when she walked to her mailbox and back that required her to go down and up 4 steps as well. It’s little milestones that make the difference. A month after she did that, she walked a block. It’s doing something small and making it a habit, like brushing your teeth.

Not outdoors, but you can support your local library by just going their and utilising their services. You're staying indoors and can even be on the Internet using their WiFi, but at least you're going out for it!
Actually outdoors, you can volunteer to plant trees or clean up trash around your neighbourhood/city.
Or you could become a dog walker and earn a little side income as well!

There are apps that you can put on your phone to check if what is mapped is correct or you can add to the map to make it better, you could spend one day just adding trees to the map by walking around your neighborhood, then fire hydrants, house numbers etc. after a while if you think you have mapped everything you can go back to the trees and ad information such as species, height etc

Make a list of every single park in your county. (But start with your own city). Have a goal of visiting one every day. Note the ones you like and take photos (or even better, grab a sketch book and do at least one sketch of a part of the park you like). If there are trails, walk the trails. Read the signs to learn about the different parks.

Find local parks with nature trails. Some parks also have free yoga or tai chi classes.
Get some photo filter apps and take walks taking fun pics with your phone. Or take up drawing. Buy some c**** sketchbooks and pencils and find places to sit outdoors and draw things you think look cool.
Go to the library and hang out and read there.
Start checking online for free events where you live. A lot of museums have free days and free concerts and movies happen more often than you'd expect.

Honestly gardening makes you want to be outside every day to water and see if your plants have done anything interesting. If you have an outdoor space, great, but if not, look into community gardens. Or you can take up foraging, which also gets me going.

Running or walking. I played soccer and wrestled in HS, then ultimate frisbee later in life. Running is the only thing I can do by myself whenever I want without having to join a league or convene a meetup. And if you combine with music, podcasts, or audiobooks, it makes it double great.

Start small and build up.
I’m 64 and was 30 lbs overweight most of my life. I started biking when I retired. First small numbers 20-30 miles a week. I got stronger. Now my fitness routine is 100-125 miles a week plus 1-2 days in the gym for strength training. The point is that you have to start somewhere, so start where you’re comfortable. You can get to 100 miles or whatever you choose to do.
And if you’re very overweight and find it difficult drop weight talk to your Dr about GLP-1. You will exercise more and feel better when you weigh less. Consider buying a bike. It’s great low stress exercise. Good luck.

get an ebike or scooter and go anywhere. Get shopping done while you're at it. Not spending money for fun, I mean stuff you needed anyway. Basically if you have a chore list of things you need to buy, spread it out over several days so you can have a place to ride to.

If you enjoy nature there is a great app called trails that shows all the trails in your area and information on each. You could get into birding or forging with little or no supplies. Volunteering nowhere does a lot of good for the soul and in the warmer weather many areas need a good clean up!

You could do one of those dog walking apps like rover to walk local dogs and earn a few bucks . Or volunteer to walk dogs at a local shelter ! You get out and your kinda forced if you commit beforehand
