I think the reason why Avatar The Last Air bender property have been treated with such disrespect from Hollywood execs is because it's a non-white story.

Posted by calikim_mo

I just watched the leaked Avatar The Last Air bender movie and Oh...My..God. It's beautiful, breathtaking, cinematic af. I'm a grown ass man, actually cried at how good it was, that the animation team gave this characters that I grew up with, justice. And with that being said at how good it was, I cannot fathom if there's any logical reasons why Paramount decided to benched this movie from theater and put it in Paramount+, a steaming platform. Because if this movie is released in theatre, I would pay for it and watch it do many times and it will make so much money because of how popular and good the movie is. If you don't know, the property have a lot of problem even back then with Kora. Which again, doesn't make sense, because they got a slam dunk IP in their hand, how could they fumbled this so many times. The first movie sucks. The netflix series sucks. The tried to end Kora after S1? And even benched this movie, smh. I can't help but noticed, perhaps because the story have no white people in the series/movie (I'm from Asia so, maybe this is a tin foil hat theory) and maybe they would handle it better if it's a white centric story.

No don't generalize it. No culture similar to Chinese teachings get to be glorified on the modern big screen. It's part of the business, the money lost in investment is actually long term gain in cultural suppression when the wager are countries of values, not just some hundred million.

There was a big stretch of time years ago where Hollywood sucked up to china and everything was funded through Chinese media companies. Even the transformer movie that came out that year was funded by a Chinese media company. There was a bunch of movies set in china during that time.

Or maybe executives make stupid decisions and not every little thing is about race. Plenty of Asian culture is hot right now worldwide.

Ahhh You've thought of everything.

AngusLynch09 Apr 18, 2026 +12
Is there anything you can point to of it actually being a race issue?

I mean Japanese but that's the smart race.

Anime is one of the biggest genres in the world.. I can assure you, it’s not because of race.

Ok_Mathematician6075 Apr 18, 2026 -5
I knew I was going to say I was Japanese and I would get an anime response.
-5
Venik489 Apr 18, 2026 +3
Did you say you were Japanese? Because I didn’t see that. Just stating a fact, anime is huge.

You can't see it. lol

I do think most execs are money minded than racist. Once the content formula for Asian markets is clearly established I can’t imagine they won’t go for it. But objectively speaking at this point beyond the original series there is already a Netflix series, a movie which both didn’t do well. And now another movie? I’m actually not even sure how that got green lit given how hard it is to get a movie made unless there were actual fans involved in the decision making system.

You are under 30. This is cute.

Neither under 30 nor cute :P But let me also extrapolate basis your comments - you are most likely white, over 30 and typically patronizing to differing opinions :)

Kpop Demon hunters was huge and won mainstream awards. Mario Bros is doing well too. I don’t remember a time when music, movies or tv from Asia was more popular in the west.

Girls. Korea and US is OK. Can not be chinese-esque cultural glorifying a male likable strong lead Aang. Also Avatar Aang has much more cultural identity which would lead more viewers to respect the unconquered east.

What I meant was. A non white property THEY THEMSELVES OWN. Of course those asian property was huge but they're own by Paramount.

I genuinely don't think most of the board members are making choices about it know aang or toph are Asian to be honest. I think it's probably more because Paramount doesn't treat their animation department well outside of like 3 brands and that's been especially true the last decade.

Not buying your racist theory. Money talks, everything else is BS.

You mean suppressing Asian culture that has Chinese ideology to help maintain Western media monopoly in the west to maintain influence of the west and suppress influence of the east to maintain generating magnitudes more money than few dozens of millions for this film...talks. right we agree money talks.

I think you're overthinking their decision. For profits only suppress what doesn't make money.

Absolutely! Just say it straight, Hollywood/American government does not want Chinese-esque ideology to be glorified and accepted on the big screen. The representation of Asian can only be in unattractive/non protagonistic way, especially the men of Asian decent. (Mulan's general becoming a whiny non glorifying role) Here we have Aang, strong righteous funny, and the Taga strong muscular hot. The story is awe-inspiring. It's definitely supposed to make atleast 400million in the theaters and probably more and start a new wave of Asian influence on the younger/new generation. But no, the cultural silencer (you know who you are) must sabotage this, even if it costs the company's some dozens of millions. But think of it, to keep the culture of Asia/China-esque away from the west gives monopoly over the entire west's audience and drives unity against Asia. This value is magnitudes more than just few dozens of millions. The artists/writers give their heart but they don't know they signed up against politics. Chinese-esque ideology (especially strong attractive empathetic likeable male protagonist) will Never be glorified in the west in the current political agenda. Leaking the film is more about controlling the public opinion, keeping the west under the current blanket view of Asia as much as possible, cutting all sprouting seeds of "hey Asian cultural is relatable and cool too". Now we're only left with an Indian female avatar in the future, not male, and farther from Chinese-esque. The film themes of culture is irony to how it is being culturally silenced. Money talks, on the larger scale, country-country scale of influence, which far outweight just short term less profit of a film. How is west different from east?... hypocritical control, there's no free speech when the basis of our understanding is already led biased against the other. I recommend letting the film go to the theaters, I'd pay twice or thrice. Maybe add one more min of footage to overcome the leaked mindset. I'm sure the cultural silencer will come down vote this or argue this and that. But Chinese-esque cultural (especially male) can not be glorified. Glorified, key word.

I'll keep my head low about this, to those above me I got the warning, sorry,; just got tired of it, but I'll shutup. While it's been working for the past hundred years, I'd like to urge that human civilization is stronger when united. Give different ppl a chance to make friends, the dominance competition should not be from within Earth. Even our biology tells that multiple cell components symbiotically work together, why must pit the different ppl as the enemy and make everyone less happy less flourishing than when working together?
