I just realized something small that made my day better
Today I randomly decided to go for a short walk without my phone. No music, no scrolling, nothing.
At first it felt weird… like I kept reaching for my pocket out of habit. But after a few minutes, I started noticing things I usually ignore — the sound of birds, the smell of fresh air, even just how quiet everything felt.
It wasn’t some life-changing moment or anything, but it actually made me feel calmer than I expected.
Do you guys ever do this? Just disconnect for a bit and notice stuff around you?
Curious what small things make your day better.
That sounds lovely!! Something small that makes my days better is to play a physical game with someone, whether it be my kids or a friend. I wish I could say I did it every day but I do aim for every week! I don’t usually walk without my phone just because I feel a need to stay reachable with young children and young adult children.

Totally get the phone-reach habit, but it's awesome you find joy in those face-to-face game sessions!

yeah, i do this sometimes and it always feels weird for like the first five minutes….then weirdly amazing. it’s kind of unsettling how fast your brain reaches for the phone out of habit, but once that wears off everything feels a little less noisy. even just doing one small thing without my phone makes me feel more like a person and less like an overstimulated tab that’s been open too long lol. no huge life lesson, just noticeably better.

That’s a really good way to describe it actually. It’s like your brain needs a few minutes to reset before things start feeling normal again.
Kind of makes you realize how constant the noise usually is.

That’s awesome, hope you enjoy it 👍 Even a short walk without it can feel surprisingly different.

I do this a few times a week. I still leave air pods in my ears to soften any traffic sounds on way to quieter areas. It’s very liberating and reminds me of what life was like when I wasn’t tethered to a device:)

Working out without looking at a screen between sets has been a game changer for me. It’s crazy how much calmer you feel.

I can imagine that. It probably makes it feel a lot more focused and less rushed too.
Do you find you perform better as well, or is it mostly about the calm feeling?

A bit of both! Not getting distracted means I actually stick to my rest times. So the workout is way more intense.

Yeah that sounds like a big difference. I’ve noticed even a quick distraction can easily turn a 60 second rest into 3–4 minutes 😄

did this a few weeks ago on a hike and genuinely forgot what it felt like to just look around without the urge to check something. the first 10 minutes feel weird but after that your brain just settles into it

That “first 10 minutes feel weird” part seems to be a universal experience 😄
After that it really does feel like your brain just slows down and adjusts.

Yes! Every day after work I go for a walk, my phone is in my bag in case of emergencies, but I don't touch it. I pay attention to my surroundings and let my senses take in the little things. It's part of my routine to improve/manage my mental health, and yes, it seems simple but really helps a lot.

That’s a great habit. Do you notice a big difference on days when you don’t manage to go for the walk?

Missing a day is fine. And I make a point of not beating myself up for it. But if it's several days, yes, I notice that it's not good for me. I have less energy, but feel more stressed.

Yeah, that makes sense. It’s interesting how quickly you can feel the difference in energy and stress when that routine drops for a few days.

I should maybe also add for context that I work from home, I'm basically sitting and staring at a screen the whole day, without leaving the apartment. That's why this walk and break from looking at screens is extremely important. 😅

I find it boring with out my phone, yes I know that things are fine if I don’t have it, but I don’t even look at when walking I just like having with me

That makes sense. Do you think it’s more about habit, or just feeling like it’s there in case you need it?

Honestly same. Sometimes just walking with your thoughts is lowkey a vibe.

I'm able to have my phone with me and just leave it in my pocket when doing something more interesting, thankfully I've never been too attached to my phone.

That’s actually a really good place to be. I think a lot of people struggle with even just leaving it in their pocket, so that’s pretty solid.

Good for you. That sounds fun.
Meanwhile I can't even eat without an ipad huhu

The iPad eating combo is powerful honestly 😄
I feel like half the world is doing “content consumption while eating” now.

I'm impressed. good for you. living life without phone is very hard.. I always have phone with me when I go to bed. I know it's a really bad habbit. I think a lot of people do the same. I try to sleep without my phone but.. I always find it really difficult.

I get that. It’s less about willpower and more about habit loops, especially when your phone is right there at the end of the day.

Even putting it in another room is amazingly relaxing - think anxiety epidemic may correlate with instant digital connectivity

That’s an interesting point. It really does feel like being “always reachable” adds a layer of background stress.

Highly recommend. My dog acts different when I'm walking with my phone vs without. Much more calm and present.

I like that. It’s cool how animals notice those small changes in our behavior even when we don’t think about it.
