The police do it all the time. It’s called, “racism”

As much as I am in the ACAB camp, I gotta say cops don't get to mass detain people indefinitely with no criminal charges. They have to at least make up a semi-plausible reason. ICE goes much beyond that and indefinitely detains people, even with indisputable proof of innocence (e.g. a US passport) for things that are effectively traffic tickets. Cops may be bastards, but ICE is worse.

What percentage of people detained in ICE custody had proof of US citizenship?

All_Hail_Hynotoad Apr 1, 2026 +12
You don’t have to be a citizen to be in this country legally.

Red57872 Apr 1, 2026 -7
Ok, sorry, proof of being in the US lawfully.

Who carries that around in their pockets? >4,400 illegal detainments by ICE in 5 months. ICE arrested the wrong people over and over again, and found to have done so illegally, by judges in court. I mean, the data is out there for you. Oh you asked for a percentage... LIKE IT MATTERS. Any illegal detainment because they didn't do their due diligence should be a huge issue.

Custody? They shot americans dead on the street. Did biden invade a state with armed masked men over the objections of the governor? Nope. You are being completely disingenious in your argument.

Remember the blind man they ditched in the middle of a snowstorm in upstate NY? There's footage of him wandering around trying to feel his way to shelter before he dies of exposure. We have no idea how many people they've done this to who weren't conveniently on camera. In MN, the practice was so bad that civilian volunteers had to mobilize to find these people and get them winter clothes + burner phones in time.

And if they’re attempting to go through the legal channels, they should be ambushed at their court hearings, right? If they’re legal, the programs they’re going through should be suspended, making them illegal overnight and fair game for abuse, right? These are the rules your heroes are playing by, you stand by them?

This is an outrage. The data shows that the vast majority of people arrested by immigration and customs enforcement officers were arrested for CIVIL immigration violations. Where the hell does ICE think they get the authority to arrest someone for a civil violation? That's like arresting someone for an overdue library book. The article said that 25% of the people ICE arrested had criminal convictions, and another 13% had pending criminal charges but, importantly, all these people had ALREADY been arrested for those criminal violations. You can't arrest someone twice just because they committed a crime--that's double jeopardy. Every single one of these arrests was illegitimate. They should sue ICE.

If a person is in the United States illegally, they can be deported, and part of the process can involve detention. There is no requirement for them to have committed a criminal act.

SparkyMuffin Apr 1, 2026 +5
And all of those detained by ICE that were here legally?
5
Red57872 Apr 1, 2026 +1
If someone was here legally and was detained, that's a problem. That doesn't change the fact the the person I responded to said that "every single one of these arrests was illegitimate". That's **not** the case; if you are in the country illegally, you can be arrested and detained pending deportation.

FollowingOver1965 Apr 1, 2026 +1
You did not read my comment. Immigration violations are CIVIL violations, like keeping a library book too long. You can't arrest someone for a CIVIL violation. ICE should just send them a Notice of Violation, just like the library does.

Civil violation or not, US laws give immigration officers the authority to arrest and detain people who are in the country illegally. [https://www.npr.org/2025/09/05/nx-s1-5517998/ice-arrest-rules-explained](https://www.npr.org/2025/09/05/nx-s1-5517998/ice-arrest-rules-explained)

Unfortunately, that is the racist republican way. Chaos, uncertainty, cruelty and violence.

75% with any records. Correct. Still remember that most of the remaining 25% can be anything that involves a criminal record. Most of them likely not being the people they claim they're originally after.

Ice scared to go after violent criminals
1
SubstantialCamel8117 Apr 1, 2026 -55
Are they illegal? If they are they broke the law. No one is against immigration if done properly and legally. Why this is so friggin hard to understand is baffling
-55
Persequor Apr 1, 2026 +45
if this were true, they wouldnt be arresting people at their immigration hearings ( you know, they place they go while they are engaging in the proper and legal way to immigrate)
45
vegaszombietroy Apr 1, 2026 -24
Not if they lied to attempt to claim asylum.
-24
Roofofcar Apr 1, 2026 +15
Makes you wonder why Ice put so much work into arresting a ton of harmless people while both screaming that they were arresting violent criminals, AND not actually going to arrest all the violent criminals they claim. Imagine how much safer we’d be if they arrested the violent criminals first over the people keeping their court dates after being granted asylum.

They arrested loads of legal immigrants, refugees, and people with asylum, they were also kidnapping people from their court hearings. They've also detained US citizens. It was never about stopping illegal immigration.

So we want to mass deport every single undocumented individual? What happened to “worst of the worst”?

Maybe Trump and his cohorts should set the example first before telling others to follow the law.

For one, it's possible to enter legally and be here illegally. Especially when they just up and decide a misdemeanor from 35 years ago means a Green Card holder of 40+ years should be ripped away from their family for no good reason, while criminals who beat the shit out of cops at the Capitol deserve a pardon. But they also arrested and shot people here totally legally who happened to be non-white or just opposed to a government shitting on constitutional rights.

sparr0w91 Apr 1, 2026 +15
And it's important to point out, that simply existing in the US without the proper paperwork is not a crime. It's basically like a parking ticket. That they are kidnapping and torturing, if not outright killing, people over.
15
Red57872 Apr 1, 2026 -3
It's not a crime, but it an offense for which a person can be deported, and part of that process can involve detention.
