What’s the Israeli saying, “1/3 of the country works, 1/3 of the country fights, and 1/3 of the country goes to real school. The only problem is that it’s the same 1/3”? Since the Haredim are by far the most war loving members of society, and the core community that has kept Bibi in power for so long (and out of jail), maybe they should try fighting if they love the idea of it so much!

zurvivl May 11, 2026 +374
They contradict the Torah too, which states that all men have soldier duties in Deuteronomy. They don't really follow the Torah, they follow their own writings.

I believe I've seen "לעזאזל עם החרדים" posted here before
56

What does that mean?

> לעזאזל עם החרדים > > To hell with the ultra-Orthodox According to deepl, at least
30
zurvivl May 11, 2026 +5
Azazel (עזאזל) was a fallen angel (perhaps even satan) who corrupted humans which eventually led to Noah's flood.
5
SoftlySpokenPromises May 11, 2026 +2
God wasn't super happy about humans becoming more free willed it would seem
2
zurvivl May 11, 2026 +2
The story goes that the angels mated with humans which led to birth of giants which then later cannibalized and raped humans.
2
zman883 May 11, 2026 +77
You're mixing Haredim with the national religious party. Haredim don't care about war or Netanyahu or anything. They vote to their own parties who go with whomever promises them budgets that allow them to keep out of the army and the job market. The national religious sect does go to the army, and usually represents the most "war loving" part of society, in the sense that their religious beliefs are mixed with nationalism and territorial claims that require the removal of Palestinians, so they won't accept any notion of peace with them. So the liberals in Israel are stuck between the parasitic ultra religious and the fascistic national religious...
77
ElNakedo May 11, 2026 +6
They only like carrying weapons of its about assassinating people who try to bring peace or to oppress Palestinian villagers.
6
Drak_is_Right May 11, 2026 +2
Don't they make up an outsized percentage of settlers?
2
Khamvom May 11, 2026 +147
I remember reading about this a few months ago. The wording is a bit of an exaggeration (though there’s a purpose for that). A big part of his job as the Chief of Staff is drumming up long-term political + policy support for the armed forces (recruiting, funding, resources, etc), and this type of language pushes lawmakers to consider things more seriously. Currently, the IDF isn’t anywhere near organizational collapse, even with current manpower shortages. The biggest constraints are gonna be politics + homefront tolerance for conflicts.
147
Idiot_Savant_13 May 11, 2026 +2
>The wording is a bit of an exaggeration (though there’s a purpose for that).  Does the Torah offer guidance on deception? Cuz, I dunno... people get better at the things they practice, and "a bit of exaggeration" sounds to me like one of those *geneivat da'at* situations.
2
PineappleLemur May 11, 2026 +18
Not really but loopholes are literally the whole game. You end up with a set of rules you should follow, a set of rules you're comfortable following and a set of rules people interpret differently and you can get groups that treat that one "source code" very very different. It's why majority of Jews in Israel are secular and generally are only Jewish on paper and follow a handful of rules even they see fit or at social gathering to "save face". But that "minority" (they're like 20% at this point which is not really a minority) Ultra Orthodox is the loud one and causes a lot of BS internally and around the world. No one likes them but because of ancient government laws/rules/bills and whatever they get a ridiculous amount of power and religion is invovled in politics way too much. There's never been a real push to saperate religion from the state because of it... Something a lot of people want for a long time.
18
choppytehbear1337 May 11, 2026 +711
Maybe they should stop exempting those religious parasites who do nothing by read the same book all day.
711
bakochba May 11, 2026 +193
That's the whole point of his message. It's not vague it's directly about that pending bill
193
faffc260 May 11, 2026 +216
bibi would lose power if he did that, so don't expect it till at least october.
216
Truiesome May 11, 2026 +60
No they will not because they vote for Bibi coalition
60
MxMirdan May 11, 2026 +24
To be fair, it’s actually a bunch of different books. But yes, the time for that exemption has long since passed.
24
TheSnatchbox May 11, 2026 +41
I dont disagree, but what kind of soldier do you think they'd be? It would obviously be a colossal waste of resources.
41
faffc260 May 11, 2026 +137
they can work logistics, be cooks, medics, various other non combat roles that would free up other troops for frontlines.
137
TheSnatchbox May 11, 2026 +61
Literally the only thing they wouldn't f*** up is reading the Torah
61
sylpher250 May 11, 2026 +42
Can they go "Wolololo" at the front lines?
42
tempest51 May 11, 2026 +15
Apperently they need to carry relics to do that now.
15
mopthebass May 11, 2026 +44
Needing to re read the same chunk of text constantly is by definition f****** up
44
zurvivl May 11, 2026 +17
They contradict the Torah too, which states that all men have soldier duties in Deuteronomy. They don't really follow the Torah, they follow their own writings.
17
TheMaskedTom May 11, 2026 +29
Reading maybe, but they typically didn't understand shit about it. "Thou shall not kill" "Thou shall not steal" "Thou shall not desire your neighbour's house" "Thou shall not covet anything from your neighbour" The settlers living in the West Bank (which, to be fair, don't correspond exactly to the military exempt groups), typically fail at least four of the 10 Commandments.
29
royi9729 May 11, 2026 +84
What makes you think they'll be worse than any other soldier? In fact they're used to a much lower standard of living and to blindly following what they're told. That should make them better soldiers, if anything.
84
TheSnatchbox May 11, 2026 +15
>What makes you think they'll be worse than any other soldier? Even asking this means you don't understand the people you're talking about. >blindly following what they're told Obviously that doesn't extend to serving in the military, again, if you knew who you were talking about. They would be a massive liability and the resources required to get them on the field would be better spent elsewhere. Now, eventually I suspect they will have to do something to bring these people more in line with modern Israeli society and military and that will take time. The time to do it is not during the middle of a war on multiple fronts, its just nonsensical.
15
Timey16 May 11, 2026 +16
On the contrary, wars like these make people more malleable to step out of their zone of comfort, making it the best moment to do so.
16
Blackstone01 May 11, 2026 +10
Does Israel's mandatory service have exemptions for everybody that is below a certain economic and/or educational level? If somebody comes from a poor family, they are just as much of a "liability" as the Haredi.
10
hyldemarv May 11, 2026 +9
The kind that will happily commit a bunch of known war crimes and then manage to come up with a few new ones?
9
ragequitteroffureh May 11, 2026 +12
Does it matter? Surely the frontline infantry always need fresh meat.
12
shiningdickhalloran May 11, 2026 +26
It doesn't work like that. Terrible soldiers are a huge liability to all around them. Better for everyone that they not be there in the first place.
26
felis_scipio May 11, 2026 +10
Has the Russian army taught you nothing? there’s always use for fresh meat as long as you don’t give f*** that you’re throwing the meat into the grinder. If you can walk you can expose an enemy position and help exhaust their ammo supplies before the actual soldiers go in.
10
alterom May 11, 2026 +8
> there’s always use for fresh meat as long as you don’t give f*** that you’re throwing the meat into the grinder. So, **the IDF** doesn't have use for fresh meat. They do give a f***, see.
8
overkill May 11, 2026 +4
There are roles in the military for soldiers which are not front line meat grinder roles.
4
ragequitteroffureh May 11, 2026 +2
Do these fellas in particular actually know how to cook, clean, etc? Although their army also accepts women, if I recall. Maybe there might be some admin tasks the old boys could do.
2
ragequitteroffureh May 11, 2026 +5
That might actually be better for the greater good; if they are too incompetent to be able to kill a lot of people.
5
JD0x0 May 11, 2026 +17
Israel doesn't use meat wave tactics. They've only lost like \~1200 soldiers or so since the conflicts starting in 2023.
17
ragequitteroffureh May 11, 2026 +6
All the more reason to use these guys, then. They shouldn't have anything to worry about, and should be practically jumping at the chance to do their bit for their country :-)

Probly just brass calling for more funding
133
MachineDog90 May 11, 2026 +83
This time is actually not the case surprisingly, Isreal has mix of exception for the draft and requirements to serve that its creating an massive personal shortages which is not help do to prolong operations.
83
Thurak0 May 11, 2026 +9
> prolong operations That's not to be underestimated. Soldiers need rest/rotations and especially all those reservists being called to duty have civilian jobs that they can't do while on active duty. The longer the conflict, the more soldiers are needed. It's not only about replenishing losses.
9
MrFancyPanzer May 11, 2026 +6
From the american taxpayer
6
DDoubleDDog May 11, 2026 +4
Netanyahu has been saying he wants to gradually wean off US aid after 2028. Also, US aid is only a small fraction of Israel's military budget. Most of the budget is funded by Israeli taxpayers.

Israel’s gotta be the only country on the planet that can get attacked by a group designated terrorists by the EU, Japan, USA, UK, etc., with 1200 dead and hundreds more kidnapped, have that group refuse to release the hostages and declare they will continue to perform such attacks, and then get blamed for “starting wars” when they retaliate. Telling them to “stop starting wars” when they respond to a deadly incursion is just a thinly veiled way of telling Israelis to die.
-24
HellHasNoRoomForMe May 11, 2026 +62
People were mostly on Isreal's side after oct 7th but you know the whole killing over 60000 palestinians including ALOT of god damn children in 4k resolution tends to kill any sympathy people have for countries champ but hey I guess eating boots is fun bud
62
strawberry_semenade May 11, 2026 +26
>People were mostly on Isreal's side after oct 7th No they weren't. On October 8th 2023 there were anti-Israel marches literally all around the world.
26
arnham May 11, 2026 -3
Considering 20-25k of that 60k are Hamas, that’s a pretty good civilian to combat casualty ratio in urban warfare. Better than the US did in many cities in Iraq and Afghanistan at the height of the insurgence there, Mosul for example. What did you think urban wars looked like? It ain’t pretty, that’s why most people try to avoid starting them by massacring their neighbors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MxWo6234o8
-3
sl00k May 11, 2026 +8
> Better than the US did in many cities in Iraq and Afghanistan You're really going to use the US as your "good" example?
8
arnham May 11, 2026 +18
I’m sure in your worldview terrorists will just surrender peacefully and everyone can live in peace and joy and coexistence. Sadly we live in the real world and not the fantasy in your head. So yes, I will be using the US (and allies — UK, France, canada Germany were all involved too) as an example of casualties in an urban war and compare it to Israel’s urban war.
18
avidernis May 11, 2026 +2
Name a better example then
2
NagyLebowski May 11, 2026 -2
First, many of the same people hating Israel now were celebrating October 7. And yeah, war is horrific. But again, it’s the lopsidedness you don’t like. There is no reason evidence the casualties and demographics of those casualties are out of line with wars historically. In fact, no one has an idea what the demographics of the dead really are or how many of those people were combatants…and sadly, Hamas also recruits kids as combatants and a huge percentage of Gaza is under 18. Any normal state would have returned the hostages to limit the bloodshed, but not Hamas. They double down and promote a culture of martyrdom among Palestinians, and many folks supporting them are complicit in it.
-2
HellHasNoRoomForMe May 11, 2026 +18
Brother you cant rationalize a belief that children deserve to die because they are not Isreali . What you have just said is beyond evil. Also why do you think a huge percentage of Palestine is under 18, let me help you.... Isreal killed a large amount of all the adults .....
18
fury420 May 11, 2026 +12
> Also why do you think a huge percentage of Palestine is under 18, let me help you.... Isreal killed a large amount of all the adults ..... Actually it's kind of the opposite of that, the average age has been young for decades because of very high birth rates and population growth over the last half-century, vastly more than the death rate by all causes. Gaza's population roughly tripled since 1990, nearly 5x since 1980. Average ages were even younger decades ago, like 14-16 from 1990-2010
12
NagyLebowski May 11, 2026 +9
Not what I wrote. No child deserves to die, but thinking Israel is intentionally targeting children is baseless. Hamas is putting Palestinian kids in the line of fire. And it is a very high birth rate that leads to the Palestinian population constantly having large proportions of kids, it is preposterous to claim that it has anything to do with Israel. The Palestinian birth rate is absurdly high and the population has increased dramatically by millions since 1948–over the same time many ~136K have died in conflicts, including since October 7, which is less than half the number that died just in the recent Syrian Civil War next door.

I will never understand why the so-called nationalists here are fine with our country being whipped by another country. Simping for a foreign government that’s actively draining our resources to fund their lifestyle is crazy.

That’s what he’s asking for.
17
Magjee May 11, 2026 +2
Yep, they said they need 20,000 more personnel and there are about a hundred thousand people of age that are exempt at the moment Even 1/5 serving would resolve the issue   Probably shouldn't be involved in multiple conflicts simultaneously But the PM wants to avoid trial, so they are stuck   /$

10
mesopotato May 11, 2026 +23
Israel requires mandatory conscription so it's not really up to the idf. Just goes to show how much they're extending their military actions if they're running out of troops and 99% of their population serves.
23
vinli May 11, 2026 +25
Yeah the reservists are getting called up over and over again. Makes it pretty hard for them to attend university or start careers or families, so you can see why it's not popular amongst them.
25
royi9729 May 11, 2026 +19
De facto only around two thirds serve. Arabs and some other minority groups are exempt due to obvious moral reasons. That's roughly 20% of the population. Ultraorthodox Jews are also defacto exempt. That's another 10% and that's the part he's hinting at.
19

Hamas and Hezbollah are not what most anyone would consider “unarmed”. Hamas stockpiled an absurd amount of weapons in Gaza and Hezbollah had/maybe still has more weapons and soldiers than the Lebanese army.
32
JD0x0 May 11, 2026 +21
Hamas and Hezbollah are also very well fed. Notably Hamas, whose militants never seem to have issues obtaining food, while the same cannot be said for their civilians.
21
byjegeren May 11, 2026 +1
Hamas after my opinion is stuck in the past but Hezbollah are definitely adapting and taking pages from Syria. They are starting to hit Merkava tanks and Israeli assets, so far in low density but if they get the experience and supply line to increase this tactic Israel will be in a though spot
1
DavidC_M May 11, 2026 +3

This administration is probably going to be the one responsible for bringing antisemitism to Israel The media there constantly publishes these stories: 1. The leader of the religious Jewish party supporting war and opposing any ceasefire 2. The same leader opposing draft of religious Jews At some point, repeatedly broadcasting the stereotype that religious Jews are hypocrites who are willing to send all the secular people into a meat grinder is going to affect the population’s beliefs
