If you could go back to January 1st, 2012, and give yourself one warning, what would it be?

LISTEN WHEN HIS FIRST WIFE TELLS YOU TO RUN. My God I will never forgive myself.

😭😭😭 Thank you and I hope you have a great day. Sundays are always tough because I have to see him when he picks up the kid. Thank you.

JamonDanger Mar 29, 2026 +192
You have to see him, but you get that great view of WATCHING HIM LEAVE. And not knowing your situation but being a mom myself, anything that gave me my son would be worth repeating again just to be his momma. (Granted I’m saying that from a safe marriage). Love you momma, your kid is lucky to have you!

“you get that greta view of watching them live” is such a great line, thank you for this!

LivingLightEternal Mar 29, 2026 +35
I'm sorry, but this is so funny. I'm gonna reframe all my interactions with people I don't like that way. "You have to see him, but you get to watch that great view of watching him leave." 💀
35
vanillasilentlake Mar 29, 2026 +11
genuinely a life skill. reframe every annoying obligation as 'but then i get to watch them leave' and suddenly its bearable

Desertbell Mar 29, 2026 +91
You don't know what you don't know, and we rarely think exes are a reliable source, even if we should (edited here because an excellent point was made downthread about how exes are often our best source of information.) You did the best you knew how to at the time. I was just telling my daughter, who was beating herself up for a mistake "because she's an adult and should know better ", that we expect adults to just know things, but that's not fair. We don't get an additional information module installed on our 18th birthday. We're still learning. We never stop. And many of the lessons we learn will come complimentary of the mistakes we make. In a way, many of our mistakes are gifts to our future selves. In a "oh, socks for Christmas. Yay." kind of way. Anyway what I'm trying to say is, be kind to past you. They did their best.

When in the process of leaving an abusive marriage, I read the amazing classic on the topic, "Why does he do that?". It's funny in a tragic way that in one chapter he writes "If your new partner talks about how his ex was crazy and made unfair accusations, it's a good idea to talk to the ex and get her side of things as well before you decide on what to believe", and then in a later chapter he states that the fiercest ally an abusive man has in continuing to make life hell for his victim after breakup is usually his new partner. In other words - we really should listen to the ex, but... We don't. At least not before it's too late, and we realise we've become the next victim and also the next "crazy ex" he will tell someone else about.

This is exactly it. I didn't know it was a red flag. I mean his ex IS kinda crazy, but she wasn't lying about *him*. He lied, though.

Yeah, this kind of makes me think about the show I watched not long ago, I think it was called Don’t date Brandon.
3
HorrorTreez Mar 29, 2026 +17
Better parent than my family, I get told to "figure it tf out youre an adult you should know better" I appreciate the love you have for your daughter.
17
Desertbell Mar 29, 2026 +6
Thank you. To be fair, she does get her share of "you're an adult, you can figure this out" but we're always here to help her if she needs us. I never want her to feel shame for making a mistake or asking for help. I got a lot of "you're grown so you're not our problem anymore" when I was first starting out and it was lonely and scary. I'm sorry you're in that position.

blackandbluegirltalk Mar 29, 2026 +6
Thank you so much. I was just really naive, I know that now.

I... hope username *doesn't* check out?
14
blackandbluegirltalk Mar 29, 2026 +23
He never hit me once. He is actually mentally ill and was diagnosed with Bipolar *after* we had a baby. With all the kindness I can muster, I will say that he was more dysfunctional than outright abusive, but in the end it was still too much. Because he *could* control it at work, and in public. Just not at home with me. It is important for young women to know that not all abuse is physical, so actually yeah that was kinda the inspiration for the username. I made this account right after I kicked him out six years ago.

DisastrousDoubt Mar 29, 2026 +3
I married my ex husband in 2014. I would absolutely tell myself not to do that. Thankfully we didn’t have kids but god damn he did a number on me. I had doubts at the time, but I also really loved him, so maybe I’d have listened to myself. That’s something I’ll never know. I kinda don’t think I would listen.

As someone who spent 3 hours in a dentist chair Friday, I would also add "wear your night guard".
66
PotentialHistorian68 Mar 29, 2026 +12
Night guard?
12
NobodyLikedThat1 Mar 29, 2026 +23
piece of plastic you put in your mouth. Like boxers wear to prevent their teeth from being knocked out. If you grind or clench your teeth at night, you need to wear one, called a night guard. I ignored it for far too long and now wear it religiously.
23
Ericovich Mar 29, 2026 +5
I'm wondering if this is a more common practice. As a kid nobody had them. As an adult, I need something or I break my teeth in my sleep.
5
PoisonedPotato69 Mar 29, 2026 +8
Yeah, take care of your teeth, back, and knees in that order.
8
MorrowPolo Mar 29, 2026 +26
This. Teeth over everything, even riches. Every adult tooth gone deteriorates jaw health and shaves years off. Implants aren't even a 1:1 health ratio. Im down 4 teeth but at least my smile is still nice, for now...
26
ComparisonOk8602 Mar 29, 2026 +49
Lost teeth do not reduce your life. There is a correlation between dental health and longevity. Correlation does not equal causation. The causation is that people who take care of their teeth tend to also take care of the rest of themselves; so people with bad teeth tend to die younger because they tend to not have healthy habits. Leaving rotting teeth in your jaw can kill you very quickly. Getting an unhealthy tooth removed from an otherwise healthy and well maintained body *increases* life expectancy because the source of deadly infection is gone.
49
1questions Mar 29, 2026 +14
Some of us just can’t afford to go to the dentist. Love living in the US. 🙄
14
nosungdeeptongs Mar 29, 2026 +10
Yeah I was going to say, for most of the world the causal relationship isn’t healthy habits but money and access. Which is why teeth are generally a class indicator.

I did a stock tracking project in High School and I noticed Nvidia was like 12 or 15 bucks. Intel was over 100. I couldn't really figure out why. Now nvidia is over 1000. It's crazy.
14

You understand that stock price comparisons mean nothing, right? IBM is nearly 50% more than NVDA

IAmNotAnAdultYet Mar 29, 2026 +81
If I would’ve spent just $500 on bitcoin in 2012, I’d be a multimillionaire today.
81
illuminatiisnowhere Mar 29, 2026 +88
I sold my 130 bitcoins in 2012....FML.
88
Random-Hero-91 Mar 29, 2026 +27
yep I had bitcoin in a wallet trying to buy ecstasy on the dark web and never did it but I have no idea where that wallet is, it was before there was apps and actually companies that hold the coins, lost in cyberspace. I always think about all the drug dealers selling on the Silk Road back in the day if some of them hung onto the bitcoins they must be billionaires.
27
DJ_Jiggle_Jowls Mar 29, 2026 +3
I had a similar situation where I had acquired some bitcoin to purchase something on the dark web. I actually did make some purchases, but then left it alone for years. Recently recovered the password to see what was inside and lo and behold... 200 dollars worth of bitcoin. Still nice to get it back but not exactly the payout I'd been hoping for. If you have any way to try to recover your account, you owe it to yourself to try!
3
IAmNotAnAdultYet Mar 29, 2026 +37
That’s a value of $9.1M, right now! That would literally make me chronically sick.
37
Genkiotoko Mar 29, 2026 +53
If it's any solace, there are very very few people out there that bought Bitcoin for pennies and sold at modern prices. Remembering that is how I sleep at night.
53
Diipadaapa1 Mar 29, 2026 +21
Hes, and there are far more far less speculative investments which has crashed and burned since 2012. There is a reason why not even Warren Buffett or any stock genious put any significant amount if any on Bitcoin in 2012. If you were able to pick the winning stock each day without taking a single loss, you would be as rich as Bill Gates in a year or two. Not even people who do it all day every day can do it, so don't kick yourself.
21
ChrisRiley_42 Mar 29, 2026 +5
That would give you 108 bitcoin at the price on Jan 1, 2012. Today's value is 66,420USD per coin, so that is 7,173,360
5
Oilswell Mar 29, 2026 +12
The first time someone told me to buy bitcoin one coin was like 80c or something, definitely less than a dollar. It was really early on and I ignored them 😂
12
TimBoss351 Mar 29, 2026 +6
Me too. It helps that I said that to someone and they made the point that I likely would have seen my $500 turn into $5,000 and sold it. And I likely would have.
6
hardyflashier Mar 29, 2026 +9
See, I've thought about this a lot. Everyone says they regret not having bought Bitcoin before the price went mad. But I try not to beat myself up about it, because I just _know_ I would have sold that the second it made some decent money. There's no way I would have had the nous to hold that shit until the price reached phone number level prices.
9
Binspin63 Mar 30, 2026 +4
Not to mention how many times it crashed. You’d be a basket case by now.

Don't sign those parent plus loans. Find another way
145
LittleNightBright Mar 29, 2026 +53
Good one!! My college advisor helped me decide on my loans and told me after 10 yrs as a Social Worker in non profits, the rest would be forgiven. So simple. I did 10, applied, and was told Parent Plus don't count, in fact none of mine count because I wasn't on the right kind of payment plan. I applied again when Biden was doing his forgiveness thing, I got a letter that my loans qualified and would be forgiven, and two days later got another letter that their administration's loan forgiveness plan was tied up in the courts, and when it resolved they would proceed with all the loans that qualified. Never heard anything again. High school/college advisors don't know this system (at least not when I needed direction) and don't seem capable of helping make educated decisions in this regard.

kaisadilla_ Mar 30, 2026 +13
I knew what bitcoin was when it was $10 at the start of 2013. Just an Internet curiosity. I forgot about it and a year later it was $300. I thought "train missed, $300 is crazy for fake coins". Then bitcoin went viral in 2017 when it started to grow from $1,000 to $10,000. Again, ridiculous price, it can only go down from there. Now in 2025 it was $100k lmao. And, tbh, I still think it's probably peak and a waste of money to buy any.

Lost mine a year and a half ago. My siblings and I were just talking about the last things we said/if anyone had videos or recordings of her. I remember deleting voice-mail thinking "I'll get more". She passed at 58, I was 25 (going on 26, about four hours after she passed). My oldest brother was 31. She had health issues, but nobody expected this.

Absolutely. She raised my three brothers and me pretty much completely on her own, she wasn't perfect but I'd do anything to have her here to meet her granddaughter. She passed in October last year and my daughter was born two weeks ago, so I've been missing her even more lately.

I'm nearly at 1 month of quitting after being a smoker for 10 years. It's worth it 1 million% and I don't plan on giving in anytime soon. Please do it for your health before something life-threatening/life-altering happens to you like it did me at only 25yo. It is a difficult journey but I feel so much better already, some days are easier than others, nicotine gum and patches have helped and to see all the money I'm saving is amazing! Don't wait to finish your last pack, just throw it out and give up from the moment you can tell yourself "right, that's it!" Please consider it strongly and seriously, you won't regret it and best of luck to you.

Sure, you can build your own house, but it's going to take you five years to finish out. Can you stand it that long?

You did stand though.

"When Dad and Mom get sick with digestive issues in January of '25 and '26, respectively, get them to the hospital by the second day, or you will lose them both." They died of entirely different things, but both would have been preventable had they gone to the hospital earlier. PSA to elderly folks: if you're feeling sickly, just go to the doc/clinic/hospital. ***You're too damn old to "ride it out" and bounce back unassisted.*** Bonus PSA: especially if you have family/descendants, **get that AARP Supplemental Medicare Plan G**. That shit covers pertnear everything and takes a helluva lot of stress out of everything for you/them. Two weeks in the ICU, followed by 3 days of in-home hospice care (equipment, supplies, meds, daily nurse visits all included) would have pertnear wiped out my mother's estate while/after she passed. Instead, we've received *one bill* for $93...which is less than the refund checks her estate has received from recent insurance overpays.

Same basic message for me too. Friday, September 13, 2019: make dad go to the emergency room. It's necrotizing fasciitis and if he waits until Sunday it will be too late. Although it will take almost a week before options are exhausted and everyone agrees to remove life support.

BlottomanTurk Mar 30, 2026 +3
I'm sorry for your loss. For my dad it was sepsis from an unknown cause, leading to cascading system failure. Within 6 hours of going to the ER (three days after he started feeling sick), he was transferred to ICU, put under medical sedation, and just never woke up from it. Held on for a couple days to let everyone say goodbye, though. Unfortunately, the reason he waited so long was because his symptoms at onset were exactly the same as the issues he would get every 6-8 months from his cancer remission management drugs. For my mom, it was a stomach bug leading to dehydration/malnutrition, causing an unknown number of strokes and seizures. Two weeks of yo-yo'ing in the ICU, and she made the nearly impossible decision to die comfortably at home rather than in the hospital.

Toezap Mar 30, 2026 +3
Yep, it was sepsis for my dad too, and no one knows how he got the necrotizing fasciitis since it was inside his shoulder and he had no injuries. He ignored the pain because what kills you in a weekend? Plus he was a doctor anyway and could monitor himself, and chatted with some doctor friends about what it might be the day it started. Sorry for your loss too. I can't even imagine it happening to both parents and so close together. And your mom's loss is so recent. 😔 It took me a few years to reach the point that I don't have to engage with the sad feelings about my dad unless I choose to do so. Weirdly, COVID helped when it started 6 months later, because EVERYONE'S lives were fucked up and not what they used to be, so it felt better to know everyone's worlds had changed, not just mine.

Stop drinking now. I feel like I didn't start my adult life until I quit drinking in 2020. The developmental progress I have made in my life since is substantial, compared to the hamster wheel I was on while I was drunk or hungover all the time. It still BLOWS my mind I allowed myself to live like that. Addiction is a b****!

Your parents will be gone in 18 months - spend some more time with them.
5
Careful_Elevator8390 Mar 29, 2026 +5
To spend the most time with my granny as I could because in just 7 years, I would lose her. She pretty much raised me and I moved out almost as soon as I turned 18 and didn’t get to spend much time with her after that. Of course as a teenager you take everything for granted and you think you will have all the time in the world. It’s my biggest regret.

Put my name on the house title. Don’t use credit cards, put as much as possible into a private secret savings account. Could we go a couple more years back? It would be to stop being a chicken and move forward with that home purchase. (Divorce had me starting from scratch in my 40’s).

Hey man. You know the voice in the back of your head saying you're a dude? Listen. When she tells you to wait until after the wedding, don't. She's gonna leave you homeless. She's going to prove you right. She's going to cheat on you like she cheated on him WITH you. It's ok to think she's the most beautiful woman you've ever seen. Because at that point, she was and sure she still is, but buddy boy, you don't even know the scores of Beautiful women and femmes you will meet who will think you're a good human because of who you are, not who you pretended to be. It's ok if you wanna stay with her, but just know when you need her the most, she's gonna bounce and you and LL will be the ones picking up the pieces. Love you homie. I promise you, we are doing ok. I'm proud of us in the future, even if you decide to change up our path. We are worth the fight.
