If you enjoyed Bugonia (2025), you should watch the Korean film it is remade from: Save The Green Planet (2003)

Posted by urafknidiot

I think most people didn't realize Bugonia was a remake because it wasn't marketed as such. I will say that Bugonia is an overall better film, but STGP has parts that are better and is very good on it's own. I wish I could get a list of every film Yorgos loves because he is a genius. A sick sick sick sick genius.

Save the Green Planet is SUCH a wild ride. I watched it years ago and still think about it sometimes. Definitely not what you expect going in.

EnterPlayerTwo Mar 23, 2026 +15
Would you expect it after seeing Bugonia though?

Yes

NancyInFantasyLand Mar 23, 2026 +2
No. The cop storyline is SO much more important to Save The Green Planet (and gets so much focus as a result). I doubt anybody who watches Bugonia first will expect that.

The scene with the woman doing a tight rope walk thing always comes to mind for me in a 'is it humor through absurdity, or is this something that in Korea wouldn't play quite as absurdly and so im totally misinterpreting all of this'

Yep. StGP is more frenetic and demented in a way. And it doesn't have the brother character, who adds some sympathy and pathos to Bugonia. And it's a less slick, polished production. But it's maybe a better movie.

I’m glad I saw the original first. There was a certainly a unique vision there, although perhaps a product of its time, where television (and movies to some extent) became increasingly frenetic. Unfortunately, the movie is now not easy to find. But it’s out there.

Free on dailymotion.

It recently had a 4K release from Arrow Video - possibly UK only but the 4K disc will be region free if you have the means to play it and can import it.

And you don’t need to import it, Orbit DVD or Diabolik has it for sure.

I have a dvd of STGP. I'll admit, I prefer it to Bugonia but, ad much as I am not a fan of remakes I think this one shone a light on STGP, and is worth a watch on its own.

Arrow just released a 4K Blu-ray of STGP a week or two ago. I liked STGP a bit better because IMO it goes crazy at times that Bugonia is afraid to. Some aspects are different but Bugonia is almost just beat for beat the same movie. Whereas the ending in Bugonia is presented as sad and mournful, STGP presents it in a comedic sense.

I just slapped my forehead reading this. I watched save the green planet in college and loved it but bc of life, etc, I just forgot about it. Then I watched begonia. Pretty good. Solid movie. Watched it, enjoyed it, and moved on. Then I read this post and only NOW put the two together. It’s the exact same movie. Well done sir

Glad to help connect the dots!

Actually just watched Bugonia hours ago and without subtitles on that final scene, i just HAD to look up the transcript to see what was ‘said’ at the end there By parts that are “better” does that include a different ending to chew on? (I didn’t dislike Bugonia’s, personally) I’m open to watching it fresh before spoiling it with any research beforehand.

urafknidiot Mar 23, 2026 +11
I don't want to spoil anything but there were just a few beats I felt had a bit more flavor in STGP.

Legohead1977 Mar 23, 2026 +2
There were no subtitles when I watched as well and we loved Bugonia. I’m going to have to look up what was said rather than piecing it together. I want to see the original but haven’t got around to it yet.

CakeMadeOfHam Mar 23, 2026 -4
It's pretty obvious what is said without subtitles yes.

Chrimunn Mar 23, 2026 -1
Yeah the montage of dead humanity is kind of a dead giveaway, glad you were able to pick up on that subtle detail. I wanted to know what actual words were spoken
-1
CakeMadeOfHam Mar 23, 2026 -5
And this is exactly why they killed all humans.

Chrimunn Mar 23, 2026 -1
Sorry did you mean to apologize for that braindead opener? You still have a chance.

HelpUs0ut Mar 23, 2026 +7
The original is definitely better.

Bugonia fans get upset when you tell them that lol I liked Yorgos' film but knew the ending so it wasn't surprising

We do?

themaskedcanuck Mar 23, 2026 +3
When I first heard of Bugonia I searched out STGP. I preferred the side kick in STGP. Other than that both were great IMO. Bugonia was my favourite film last year.

rosy_stardrift_84 Mar 23, 2026 +6
This is exactly why I try to look up if something’s a remake. The source material is usually way more bold
6
lunar_lilacwhisper_1 Mar 23, 2026 +7
I love when remakes lead people back to the original like this. Half the time the source material is way more interesting

Drop some examples!

Loved stgp but haven't seen it in maybe 15 years and didn't realize it was remade from it!

Save the Green Planet has a manic energy that provides way more entertainment than Bugonia which almost feels too real in 2026.

neo_sporin Mar 23, 2026 +3
my wife and i saw the trailer and she said 'oh that looks good' and i said 'honestly...i think we've seen it?' And we went back and forth on our drive home about it and then i said 'HA. IT IS a remake of Save the Green Planet' and she said 'HA i never saw that' and i said 'HA, yes you did back in 2007' and then it clicked for her that she did see had seen it. We both dont really have a desire to see Bugonia now
3
urafknidiot Mar 23, 2026 +1
You should definitely still see Bugonia

hyperpuppy64 Mar 24, 2026 +2
The bees scene lives rent free, absolutely hilarious film. If you want a slightly wackier, more homespun take definitely check it out.
2
lunar_orchidglow_22 Mar 23, 2026 +5
I had no idea Bugonia was a remake until after I watched it and now I feel like I missed out on the full experience 😭 adding this to my list asap.
5
urafknidiot Mar 23, 2026
After watching both, I think Bugonia first is the better order. But I am a super simp for Yorgos.

The original has tons of torture scenes. Very unpleasant movie.
3
DrPatrickStar Mar 23, 2026 +7
The discomfort is intentional. The film deliberately refuses to let you settle into a comfortable moral position. You don’t know whose side to be on, whether the torturer is deranged or right, whether the victim is innocent. That ambiguity is what makes it meaningful rather than gratuitous. If it was easy to watch it wouldn’t be doing its job.
7
babysamissimasybab Mar 23, 2026 -1
Nah, it's pretty easy to root against the guys committing non-stop torture. That's an easy choice for me. I'm not surprised Lanthimos eschewed torture for the most part (I think there was just one such scene in Bogania) and you put it succinctly: they're gratuitous in Save the Green Planet and it turns what should be a moral quandary (who do I root for?) into a clear cut example of evil.
-1
DrPatrickStar Mar 23, 2026 +1
The CEO he kidnaps is pretty unapologetic about his role in killing that guy's girlfriend and putting that guy's mom into a coma. Also basically helping him kill his mother at the end. I think you could see it either way
1
babysamissimasybab Mar 23, 2026
Then have him arrested? I guess I'm the weirdo for thinking torture isn't fun to watch or morally right?
0
DrPatrickStar Mar 23, 2026 +1
I’m not saying you’re weird. And nobody is rooting for the torture. The discomfort exists to make you sit with the fact that legitimate recourse already failed him. The film is a tragedy about what kind of depravity people turn to when the system offers no justice.
1
urafknidiot Mar 23, 2026 +3
But the guy is either a sociopath CEO or an alien here to kill us all. Although it is given I prefer watching the former get tortured because the latter is doing something just, aside from the non-humans getting killed too.
3
babysamissimasybab Mar 23, 2026 -1
Neither a sociopathic CEO nor an alien should be endlessly tortured. Why do you think Lanthimos went in another direction in the remake? You undermine any chance of moral ambiguity by having one side commit endless bouts of torture.
-1
urafknidiot Mar 23, 2026 +3
I'm not even sure what you're talking about. He electrocuted the shit out of emma stone. And strong disagree on the c e o part
3
babysamissimasybab Mar 23, 2026 -1
Yeah, there was just the one torture scene in Begonia. That's it. It's endless torture in the original, the definition of gratuitous.
-1
urafknidiot Mar 23, 2026 +2
I agree it was definitely not made for a sensitive audience.
2
babysamissimasybab Mar 23, 2026
Or me! I watch just about all of the horror movies no matter how violent, and I just found Save the Green Planet so repetitive and boring.
0
Feverstone Mar 23, 2026 +2
But that’s the best part?
2
babysamissimasybab Mar 23, 2026
I hated it. Regardless of personal feelings, though, it's just wrong to assume people who like Begonia would like Save the Green Planet. A lot of people shockingly aren't into torture p***.
0
Feverstone Mar 23, 2026 +2
Agree to disagree, it’s the source material for Bugonia and I’m sure tons of people would love to see what inspired it. Green planet is a dark comedy, not a torture p*** movie.
2
babysamissimasybab Mar 23, 2026
Someone else was saying the torture was supposed to be upsetting so now I'm confused. Was it funny or gross?
0
Feverstone Mar 23, 2026 +1
He tortures the man using a d**** that shoots steam out of it, it’s 100% intended to be funny
1
babysamissimasybab Mar 23, 2026 +1
Take it to with u/DrPatrickStar. You're on opposite ends of if the torture is supposed to be fun or upsetting.
1
DrPatrickStar Mar 23, 2026 +1
It’s a little bit of both. It’s a comedic film in how unhinged his logic is. But it’s also supposed to show depravity as well.

nightsafe Mar 23, 2026 +2
i personally enjoyed bugonia even more than save the green planet but both are absolutely worth a watch a lovely 4k of the original just came out too, perfect time to jump in!
2
Vid_Word Mar 23, 2026 +3
They tried to suppress the fact that it was a remake. They stuffed the "based on" credit at the bottom of the screen in the end credits below a bunch of unrelated credits. I agree that the remake is a tad better because the original is just too cartoonish and histrionic in terms of the actors.
3
huck500 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Haven't seen Bugonia, but I was wondering why it sounded so much like STGP. I'll have to check it out.
1
CakeMadeOfHam Mar 23, 2026
I would recommend Eddington and Beau Is Afraid by Ari Aster.
0
urafknidiot Mar 23, 2026 +3
Like Eddington a lot and Beau is in my top 25 all time. But wait.. are those remakes?
3
CakeMadeOfHam Mar 23, 2026 +1
No. Just that same paranoid absurdism vibe of Bugonia. Under The Silver Lake could be on that list as well.
