If you had to choose one or the other, would you rather be rich or famous? Why?

Posted by m-i-a-beard

I was asked this in an interview once and thought it was an awesome question. My answer was “famous” but I’m not sure I’d want to be a poor famous person. What do you think?

Rich, largely because I like being anonymous in the grand scheme of things.

Rich, no doubt. Fame comes with pressure, money gives you freedom.

Definitely not famous. Even if the choice was not rich or famous. Just seeing the inescapable spotlight that famous people are in makes me a little anxious.

The only reason I'd ever want to be famous is to be rich. I see zero other upside to fame.

Rich Being famous sounds awful I hate running into people from high school at the grocery store I couldn't imagine having swarms of people that you don't even know trying to get your attention Rich I'd be able to do what I want, to be able to mostly fly under the radar.

Rich. I'm a very private person and have never enjoyed being the center of attention.

Rich. I have no desire to be famous. I'd hate the publicity and the potential stalkers and whatever else comes with it. I need money to live and there's so much I could do with it.

Rich, only because I like being anonymous. I don't want to be particularly rich either, but rich and still having privacy is preferable to not being rich and everyone knowing who I am and having dumb opinions about my personal life.

Much rather be rich and able to choose what projects I want to undertake. Famous means constant scrutiny and demands from others, the requirement to maintain an image, and the risk of your life being ruined by a careless remark.

I hear a consensus forming…now, is it possible to be secretly very wealthy? Wouldn’t you eventually give your money to charity, or buy assets, that would eventually lead to fame?

Rich. Fame without accompanying wealth sounds painfully inconvenient. I can’t imagine a great degree of fame would manifest out of buying assets. If you did intend to be secretly wealthy, I wouldn’t advise donating an unprecedented amount to charity, especially in a way which links your identity.

rich. i really hate the idea of being famous. of people knowing everything about me, reading into everything i say, having no real privacy. i’m good on that. i’d rather have lots of money and peace.

Rich. Being famous would mean you have no private life, all that attention would probably be draining

I would never want to be famous. Would love to be rich

Quietly, secretly rich, where no one knows you're wealthy. I would consider being famous a curse and torture on Earth.

Famous Fame is a generative asset while wealth is a stored one, Fame can lead to wealth much easier than wealth can lead to fame. That's because wealth is not a measurement of future success it's just a measurement of past success; however, fame is different in that it is more enduring. That's because wealth, if removed, just returns you to normalcy (or even poverty) which is not necessarily profitable again; however, lost Fame generally results in infamy which can also be profitable in its own right.

I can use money to pay for my needs and luxury products/experiences. I don't know what I could even do with fame besides leverage it to become rich.

I guess on a forum like Listnook, I should expect that people want to be anonymous!
1
RollingKaiserRoll Apr 1, 2026 +1
Why should it matter if it’s on Listnook? There’s no benefit to being famous for the average person, it’s just another means to get rich.

Rich, for sure. I feel like being famous means losing your privacy. Even small behaviors can have a huge impact. But being rich is different. You can still have your own life, buy what you want, and even say things you probably shouldn’t, but no one cares about you.

Rich, being famous makes you vulnerable. Everyone will be on my business and I don't tolerate criticism.
