youravgindianMar 20, 2026

This is JJK in a nutshell. 90% of the time I don't know what the f*** is going on. The author made the power system unnecessarily complex for a TV animation. If a complex system like Cursed Energy was taken and made into a 2 hour movie, I would love the shit out of it, but watching 50+ episodes and still finding it hard to follow is something not everyone can watch.
So many JJK 'fans' don't even know what the f*** is going on. They watch it for cool fights and flashy animation. Nothing else. And its fine. But it would be so great if the narrative was a little bit easier to follow.
19
BiggestBlackestLotusMar 20, 2026
+9
They just can't help themselves and keep piling shit on top of their magic system. Everytime I think I have a grasp of it they're like "oh yeah btw there's this reversed cursed energy technique that only works when someone uses a simple domain against a cursed spirit but not when that spirit is grade 1 or higher because yadda yadda yadda" and I just don't care at this point. I'm pretty much just here for the animation now.
9
Key-Feedback4518Mar 20, 2026
-11
Reading comprehension issue. The system is complex but really not hard to figure out and what you're saying doesn't happen anywhere in the story.
-11
PossiblyASparaMar 20, 2026
+2
It's not helped by the anime occasionally adapting too much of the narration at the cost of comprehension. Taking yesterday's episode as an example, when the narrator explains HWB, it also takes the time to explain how it differs from a technique used once in Season 2 that negates an opponent's technique. Cool. But that's pretty much just an extra detail that isn't particularly relevant to the actual interaction occuring, which is so much simpler: HWB negates the technique imbued into the barrier, but as Megumi's domain doesn't have a proper barrier, it doesn't do shit. The manga gets away with the extra detail because it has the advantage of giving the reader time to digest the information and pick up on all the details, but it's complete overload in the anime when it tries to blitz through information like that.

Same. Animation can only get so good. So many movies and tv shows 'look' good. Doesn't mean their stories are also good. GOT Looked great in later, but the story got worse as the show started looking better. People tend to confuse appearance with depth. Goes to show how gullible the modern audience really is.
1
jor1ssMar 21, 2026

I guess the majority disagrees though because there was A LOT of merch for it in Japan and China, so it is very popular.
People say the story in Demon Slayer is too simple, but it looks gorgeous and the story is easy to follow so I get how that became huge.
1
youravgindianMar 21, 2026
+1
No, I get it. But my issue is with people who pretend that JJK is like some second coming of jesus christ. No, its not. You need to watch more shows and even just more anime to see how much good animation carries the show's popularity and how little depth it really has. I'm not complaining or judging anyone else's choices. I'm enjoying season 3. Especially the episodes 8 and 9 were my fav in season 3 (because they were well written) so far. But both things can be true.
It looks good, yes, but it also doesn't have much going on a deeper level like people pretend.

Just saying animation quality does not really describe why S3 is so outstanding and compared to animated movies, it is the direction of so many scenes, so much good use of rotoscoping (sometimes it is just so realistic it looks like it is rotoscoped), so many different animation and musical styles used, all elevating what is a very messy story full of bloated exposition and interesting characters.
Just watching the OP gives a pretty clear idea of what S3 is like. S1 OTOH I found indeed rather bland and I only stuck through it because I happened to enjoy the way people were drawn.

You are absolutely right the directing is on another level (and don't forget the editing) but if I was going to demonstrate that with gifs I would have to lean into big spoilers for certain episodes or, even if avoiding, that create my own animated gifs which need to be much larger to see them in higher detail and for a much longer duration.
It's a big ask.

So, most fictional series? Look at "the Force" in Star Wars, "haki" in One Piece, etc. It's all rules that the creators came up with. It's part of world building in fiction.
3
youravgindianMar 21, 2026
+1
Alright bro. For the force in star wars, I don't need to do Math like Gojo's Technique, or do puzzles in Kirara's technique or remember baseless rules that add nothing to the world except fill the time run for the sake of it. The force in star wars is not math. It's very simple to understand. I've only personally seen episodes 4 and 5 of SW and I liked whatever I saw, so if something like JJK happens in future, I'm dipping.
In one piece, I've only heard the word Haki once when I just finished the Post Enies Lobby arc yesterday when Whitebeard and Shanks meet in the New World. And I'm not even that big of a fan of One Piece. So, if things get unnecessarily convoluted, I'm dipping. I'm here to enjoy shows, not stress myself out. It's okay if you enjoy it.
Do what makes you happy. People can like and dislike things.

If it’s watchable, I’d say keep going.
I wasn’t a fan of it at all at first. The power system felt like a shitty version of HxH. The characters didn’t really grab me. But something did change later down the line and it’s easily one of my favorites.
If it’s not unbearably bad to you, I’d give it another shot.
9
BakedWizerdMar 20, 2026
+1
Definitely not unbearable - it just feels like really cool moments, and very typical (albeit compelling) power systems, but the delivery - the aesthetic - is just so bland.
The main character looks like knock-off Naruto with pink hair
His two male associates have the same hair - just different colour, and their outfits are boring, there’s no character in the design.
CSM and Dorohedoro are some of my favorite anime, and those both lean heavily into “stylized” even if CSM is sort of the same exact genre.
I guess a good example is how CSM and JJK do uniforms. CSM just feels like the characters are making the uniforms their own outfits, where JJK just adds a tiny bit of flair to each uniform - I know that’s like the tiniest, pickiest detail ever.

" the aesthetic - is just so bland."
This is why I suggested in my OP new people can just jump right into season 3 if they can tolerate not being able to follow the main story.
The aesthetic becomes anything but bland.
In fact it should be stated JJK stops being this as early as episode 6 from season 2. If you want to follow the story better you could start there in order to not be completely lost during season 3.

I can’t think of a character that had a satisfying conclusion in the final arc. Maybe Sukuna?
So many characters were introduced, just to be discarded. The legacy characters took a back seat for nothing.
The Jujutsu world was barely explored.
The fights were constantly interrupted, so Gege could explain the convoluted battle mechanics introduced mid combat.
The pacing was all over the place. That second to last chapter was the embodiment of Gege just throwing shit at the wall. Exploring something NOBODY cares about, when so many other plot threads were left to rot.

Everything pre-Shibuya arc is great, with the writing precipitously declining in quality thereafter. If you like Demon Slayer, treat it like that, except it tries to pretend its story and themes actually matter. People say Shibuya Arc is one of the best in anime, I think it's one of the worst and it's carried by visuals.
If you're okay with a nonsense story that boasts cool fights, give it a go. Otherwise, steer clear.

No it’s not a troll, I was so disheartened by the two part premier, coupled with the animation controversy and issues that happened in the last third of season 2 (which still had much better animation than these episodes), I gave episode 3 a chance and it was basically a PowerPoint presentation with almost no animation, and I lost the motivation to continue watching. 3 episodes of mostly showing the backs of peoples heads, avoiding showing people talking, and sloppy action direction, I didn’t want to watch one of my favorite animated series go down that route any more. But I’ll give episode 4 a chance.

I'm with you, I'm confused on this post. I'm like 8 episodes in and think the animation is trash compared to seasons 1 and 2

If yall want to watch the series for the god tier animation, that’s valid. JJK and Demon Slayer are on another level with the visuals.
**However, JJK has one of the worst endings to ever exist. Do not get invested in the characters, do not grow curious about the world, do not expect every subplot to have a resolution.**
This show broke me on a psychological level. Shibuya Incident made me believe this would be FMA levels of good, but then the series just…
I’ll never be able to trust again.

They share my pain. The manga readers know what’s in store from the Culling Games onwards 😭

No it very much is. I have never seen a series squander that much potential.
Tell me what you liked about the ending. I need to know.

I enjoyed the dynamic between Yuji and Sukuna culminating in a conversation between the two that highlights Yuji’s growth in mindset throughout the series and his attempt at getting Sukuna to see the inherent value of just being alive.
The narrative structure of the final arc with the training period and the continuous reveal of Jujutsu High’s plan was compelling to me and I found a fair amount of the character writing satisfactory.
Granted, not everything works for me but like, so what? I like more of it than I don’t so I can’t say that I hated it.

The narrative structure of the final arc, how did you find it appealing? It was a series of fights that were interrupted by explanations of the fight, rather than just SHOWING it.
I think you’re focusing on Yuji and Sukuna, but what else happened in that arc? Like genuinely?

i’m new to the series; caught up pre-szn 3 last december. was it just me, or did anyone else feel like the anime actually started with jjk0? like, i was captivated moving forward when i was just dredging the latter of szn 1

It feels like this because it *was* first :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jujutsu_Kaisen_0#:~:text=The%20manga%2C%20which,in%20December%202018.
But totally agreed, both JJK0 and the Hidden Inventory arc feels like the show that Gege actually wanted to write, and JJK more broadly is just his excuse for cool fight scenes. Once I started just accepting JJK for its vibes, not its plot, I started enjoying it far more.

I get where you are coming from. Season 1 spends so much time teaching you rulesets. Additionally the world building is a bit obtuse because you have to grasp a bunch of technical jargon.
The Movie jjk-0 comes across much better because it focuses a lot more on building up the characters and ties together the world building with drama more directly (in addition to having awesome fights).

yeah, agreed on the rulesets. explaining concepts felt like an anime inside an anime at times. endearing, but threw off the tone

I’ve not really enjoyed the animation, season 2 seemed so perfect to me.
Season 3 feels a little more experimental and abstract, like they’re trying to be very artistic with the animation and it’s jarring to watch.

Season 1 was better

Emily Rudd (from One Piece Live Action) approved of this show and I can't think of anyone who knows anime better. It must be pretty good.

Let's not kid ourselves. Arcane is still in a League of its own. I wouldn't expect any other series to come close in raw animation quality, cause Arcane took years and $250 million which is unheard of.

Not sure why you're downvoted, I can't think of any anime that even comes close to looking as good as Arcane.

Correct. It's obvious why I'm downvoted, because a lot of anime fans on reddit are delusional (defensive). They can't enjoy two things at the same time. I love JJK and Arcane, but it's obvious Arcane is, visually, on another planet. That's completely ok. It's not a contest. Both shows have won awards already. Chill.

For one, comparing entirely different kinds of animation with some self-invented metric of what quality is, leaves nothing for discussion.
You might as well say "oh Ghibli ain´t got shit on Toy Story in terms of animation"
Feel absolutely free to call me all of the things you just said, not my problem.

yeah because Arcane isn't hand drawn 2d animation... Great argument!

Oh my apologies you were confused that it is about 2D vs 3D. Arcane uses both btw.
Ghibli ain´t got shit on Arcane then, there you go, an example you can understand is pointless comparison.

It's not pointless. People compare movies of all types, it's just what people do. Using your example, I would say, "Arcane has better animation quality than studio Ghibli." This is exactly the same as saying, "Interstellar has better special effects than Star Wars: a new hope." It's almost an inarguable statement of fact.
The reason why this might seem stupid is because you have such a deep respect for animation, and you think it's some holy ground where we don't dare compare things because everyone worked so hard on it and styles are SO varied and it's SO deep. If it's pointless to rank animation, then it's pointless to rank movies or TV shows. You absolutely rank those, and think about how good or bad their special effects, their cinematography, etc. So why is animation suddenly off limits from discussion?

JJK cannot tell a story visually. There's a novel worth of exposition, explanations, and talking.
