If you went to an ATM and money started pouring out uncontrollably, what would you do?

just walk away, taking it would be illegal and the world is full of cameras (ATM themself have at least one), it's not worth gambling that I won't be identified , getting a record will impact my life way more than a few thousands dollars.

I'd at least call the bank the atm belonged to and let them know it happened.

And now you are prosecuted because you were the one who hacked it before your accomplice picked up the money.

>Quite an aggressive I don't think that word mean what you think it mean. >and downvote friendly audience for this hypothetical scenario. look pretty chill to me, you have the only downvoted comments in the whole thread at the moment.

Free money doesn’t stay free for long

Unless it isn't recognized as your cash, it is not free. You will go to jail (if caught)

Panic. Take nothing. Walk away. Tell no one. Spend the next 40 years wondering if that was my one moment

theroch_ Mar 30, 2026 +2
Take a selfie and video the carnage as soon as others realise. Free entertainment

kodaxmax Mar 30, 2026 +2
call the number on the machine. Those things have cameras.

Grab as much as I can and keep it. These sorts of questions are not dilemmas for me

No-Flatworm750 Mar 30, 2026 +3
collect it and then hand it to the police. (So that you cannot be charged with theft)
3
Admirable_Annual6513 Mar 30, 2026 +7
why go through the trouble of collecting and returning?

Jaded-Currency-5680 Mar 30, 2026 +3
yea, just leave

I’d freeze for a second, heart racing, then panic about getting arrested while stuffing my backpack, dreams of ‘free money’ come with instant guilt.

first thought would be “this has to be a trap,” but if it kept coming out, i’d def fill my pockets and run while keeping an eye out for cameras. what would you do?

There’s a small documentary on YouTube where a guy found a credit card glitch or something on an atm, and basically got free money for a while before he got caught. Think it was in Canada

Coolmyco Mar 30, 2026 +2
Aus and he turned himself in because the paranoia. He made money and they essentially didn’t see what the problem was and didn’t want to prosecute him. Honestly it was a huge win he just needed to do crypto or something to have a nest egg for after getting caught.

I have dealt with a guy who basically had a free money glitch. His mother had 350000 Wur in her checking account (!) and he saw her entering her PIN at the ATM. A few months later he took her card and - due to some unfortunate limit settings - he got 58000 Eur out of an ATM. It always spat out only 1000 Eur in each transaction. So he did it 58 times. There is video footage of him operating that machine that I saw. Just amazing to see the repetitions and the stamina. Like a little monkey pressing the lever in a skinner box.

ATMs have internal cameras so they will see who has taken the cash. I would notify the bank that owns the ATM and walk away.

Blink at the money to see if the denominations stayed the same. If they didn’t I’d know I was dreaming. Writing never stays put in my dreams.

well atms have cameras so if i was just using it they know my card and can ID me so easy and see if i take some on video but if i i did take any i wouldnt spend it for a long time or at least be careful where i spend it cuz they can prob trace it with serial numbers too either way i was gonna say does this even really ever happen in real life and googled it [https://abcnews.com/US/atm-texas-mistakenly-spits-100-bills-10s/story?id=59431084](https://abcnews.com/US/atm-texas-mistakenly-spits-100-bills-10s/story?id=59431084) in this case the bank said the customers got to KEEP the money so might as well take it then if cops confront you confess and give it back right away or maybe theyll be nice and say it was our fault keep it like that bank maybe

now, I would just watch. As a poor 20 something I would grabbed a bunch and sat on it until the coast was clear or someone came looking for it.

As long as it didn't happen when I used my card, I would do nothing. The owners of the ATM would know to whom the card was issued that caused the problem and they would want the money returned. If it was my card, I would take as much money as I could so that I could return it and ring the number on the ATM machine to tell them what had happened

tech_creative Mar 30, 2026 +1
Say "thank you, ATM".
1
thehermit14 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Hang around.
1
Huttser17 Mar 30, 2026 +1
The only atm i use does not have a direct money path, so I'll assume I'm on camera for a movie or prank, throw the birds, get back in my car and drive away.

Walk away and comeback in disguise.

What money?
1
britishmetric144 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Do a Google search on my phone, to look up the phone number of the bank whose name is listed on the ATM. Then dial the number for that bank, and report the problem. I don't want to get in trouble with the law.

Piss and shit everywhere.

Act surprised, move towards money and try to restrict the flow of cash with your hands by doing clumsy moves. Meanwhile call the police and report the incident. While doing those things, grab some bill notes carefully. Even with cameras, you will not be suspected for a couple o bill notes missing. A windy day helps a lot. By this method, you will be some hundred dollar richer, without trouble. Small risk, small gain..I think it's worth

NoogaShooter Mar 30, 2026 +1
Turn all the bills the same direction.

xo_shazzy Mar 30, 2026 +1
I’d look around for the hidden camera because my luck isn't 'winning the l******' luck,it’s 'becoming a viral meme for getting arrested' luck.😂😭
1
Mc_Shine Mar 30, 2026 +3
There are always (hidden) cameras around an ATM.
3
SpicyGiggleA Mar 30, 2026 +1
Freeze, grab cash, panic about cameras.
1
DemonThesisY Mar 30, 2026
I’d probably panic for a second, then try to stop it or call the bank. Feels like the kind of situation that could get you in serious trouble if you just walked away with money.
