Before I take the plunge, I wanted to know if it would be important or even just better to watch the original Terminator first. I would rather jump right into 2 which I already have loaded up and ready to go, not try to find Terminator and watch it first!
Another thing is that I’ve heard there’s a big spoiler that was intentionally made to the audience during its first run. I’ve seen on listnook that since very few people haven’t ever seen it or heard about that spoiler, the number of people who don’t know must be vanishingly tiny. I am one of those people. Since action movies never interested me as a kid, I never paid any attention to the much later online discussions or Wikipedia article for T2. I’m looking forward to seeing what that’s all about.
Thanks! Going to start watching in just a few minutes - unless a large number of people here are adamant that the original MUST be seen before T2 in order to appreciate it. If that really happens, I’ll watch T1 first and then T2. If not, I’ll stick to my plan of watching T2 right now and then watching T1 directly after that if I like this movie enough.
Anything else I should know going in?
EDIT: alright, I will take your advice and watch the first one before I watch T2! Also, WHY am I being downvoted??? I asked a legitimate question in good faith, was polite, even agreed to respect everyone’s opinion so much that I would do what was suggested…I really don’t understand listnook sometimes.
I will be back to post my impressions of the first movie in the next edit after I see it! Thanks so much to all of the helpful and polite individuals not arbitrarily downvoting :)
You 100% have to see the first one first, you will miss so much of the story by just jumping into the second one!
I can't even imagine watching the second one without seeing the first one.....

I knew someone that decided to watch Avengers: Endgame as his *very first* Marvel Movie... Had to break the news he missed over a decade of content before that. He then realized why he was so confused and didn't understand anything going on.

the first one is great, but just keep in mind its very 80s, its great, but yeah, it will show its age. Its a fantastic film in my opinion. and then T2 is an all time great film. I even like the sequels after that except the horrible McG one, Terminator Salvation.

Why would you watch Terminator 2 first when it is a direct sequel? Character development won't hit, and you will not understand or appreciate why thing are they way they are. You won't even recognize character that were introduced in the first part, that aren't they main characters.

I would say watch the first one first. It is worth the extra 2 minutes to pull it up.

If you are indeed one of the rare people who knows nothing about T2 you need to see T1 first because the reveal will be so much better in T2.
I wish I could experience moments like this again. Very few movies have big surprises to look forward to nowadays so you’re in for a treat with T2.

If you’re mentioning the spoiler in 2, it will 100% not have the same impact unless you see the first one.
While two is an incredible blockbuster, I often consider 1 a master class in terms of a low/mid budget film creating an action classic. Cameron was so good at optimizing all of these filmmaking techniques to punch way above his weight class. I feel it was lessons learned initially working for Roger corman.

While Terminator 1 will give you context, Terminator 2 will function in isolation, there's enough exposition to tell you enough of the history of why.
I would recommend watching Terminator 1, first, though, if you can.

T2 works solo. It is much higher budget film compared to T1, looks passable even now. It is worthy of praise - however, I and quite a bit of others like T1 more. Very different stories and even genres. But the point is, after T2 T1 will look kinda poor visually, and everything will be spoiled. So there is no reason to skip T1.

You asking about why you are being downvoted. It’s because it’s moronic to even consider watching a sequel without watching the first.

Yeah, dude, you definitely need to watch T1 first. You'll miss out on the entire heart of the movie, motivations, and the "twist" of the movie.

I would personally watch Terminator before mostly because T2 will give you certain details which might reduce dramatic effect in Terminator. It's not a dealbreaker and won't totally ruin the first, but just something to be aware of.

I dont like the first film, but its absolutely integral to get the full weight of the decisions in the second film, and elevates the second film simply because it exists.
The first film is just extremely low budget, but otherwise a decent first time watch if you can get past that and the age of the film.
