The Wire - I know I am late to the party. I have been binge watching the series for about a month now and I was totally hooked. It was easily some of the best TV I have ever seen right up until Season 5 Episode 2. Even in Season 4 when McNulty was barely around I still thought the show was incredible because the writing felt so grounded.
But I have reached my breaking point. I just finished episode 3 and I think I am done.
I can't stomach what they are doing to McNulty. For four seasons he was a disaster of a human being but he was always Natural Police. His arrogance was tolerable because it was rooted in a genuine talent for the work. He was a prick but he had a code.
This fake serial killer plot is a bridge too far. Watching him physically tamper with bodies and invent a fantasy to manipulate the system does not feel like classic Jimmy anymore. It feels like he has become a total fraud. He spent the whole series complaining about how the bosses and the stats were fake and now he is the one orchestrating the biggest lie in the department's history.
Even worse is seeing him drag Lester down with him. Lester Freamon was the moral anchor of that unit and seeing him go along with this madness just feels like the writers needed a way to catch Marlo and decided to throw the characters' integrity in the trash to get there.
I loved the realism of this show but this feels like a cartoonish jump the shark moment. I would rather stop now and remember McNulty as the flawed genius than watch him become a hollow fraud.
Am I the only one who feels like the show lost its soul here? Does it actually get better?
TL;DR: Stopping at S5E3 because watching McNulty go from Natural Police to a total fraud is ruining the show for me. I can’t watch him burn it all down like this.
It was a weird choice to not even mention the name of the television programme you’re talking about here. For what it’s worth I think you should finish up The Wire, you’re almost there.

Yeah, leaving out “The Wire” made it read like you were breaking up with a person. Season 5’s messy, but it lands the plane. Maybe treat the serial killer arc as satire, not realism.

There are definitely worse codes you could have.

Quitting with 7 episodes left? Nah, suck it up and finish it.

Yeah season 5 of the wire is definitely my least favorite for this reason, I still think it worth finishing though since you've come this far.

Honestly, I agree with you and thought the same - that deviation in the characters really bothered me.
I was okay overlooking it because I suspected they needed a way to show the way police might game the system to run taps, etc. and those characters happened to be the ones they decided to put in place.
From a character perspective it doesn’t make sense, but from a “things we wanted to cover” perspective, it might have seemed rational to the writers

Fine, don't get any resolution on Bubbles' arc.

Meh, I feel like its something McNulty would do, wouldnt surprise me if it had really happened in the real world once or twice

That’s a bridge too far, but the Brother Mouzone stuff wasn’t? The entire scene with just the word “f***” wasn’t?
The show is fantastic but it’s far from super serious and realistic.

I thought that it was one of the greatest scenes on the screen.

Ah finish it! It's not the strongest season but it's still the Wire and it's better than most tv you'll ever see.
But yes. We've all been there. The rest of the storylines are still great.

I knew you were talking about The Wire when the title had “natural police” bc I haven’t heard that term in any other show haha
