IMAX theater issues

Posted by MassiveFill2646

So recently I realized that I prefer watching movies like Oppenheimer, dune 2 and now project Hail Mary at home with high quality headphones on or a good surround sound system in place. I literally walked out of all 3 movies mostly disappointed and the reason is for seeing them in poor quality imax theatres in bad seat choices. Has anyone else felt this type of way? I noticed specifically during Oppenheimer and now Project Hail Mary that I chose to sit too high up where the acoustics are extremely unbalanced. The score background music during many scenes becomes unbearably loud to the point where the dialogue becomes muddied. The bass is so overpowering high up that you can’t hear the dialogue and it almost becomes a concert. I walked out of project Hail Mary last night completely dissapointed and wondered how the reception was so overwhelmingly positive until I pulled up the bootleg version, still decent quality on my laptop with headphones and had a complete 180 of an experience. Everything about the movie I felt was flawed in theaters didn’t feel that way at all when watching at home. I loved nearly every part of it. Does anyone else feel this way when experiencing it in theatres where the acoustics aren’t quite balanced and it’s not really true IMAX on the 70mm screen? Thoughts?

Nah, preferring a bootleg version of the film that was covertly filmed on a smartphone while sitting in the cinema over watching the actual movie in the cinema is absolutely crazy work.

The regular AMC IMAX theaters are all pretty much scams where I live. There's only one true IMAX theater near me, and the difference is very apparent.

Maybe if theaters actually cleaned their laser projectors once a decade, we wouldn't have to deal with that distracting "screen door" grain on every bright scene. Most of these "certified" venues are just overpriced shoeboxes with blown-out subwoofers masquerading as premium experiences.

You would have to torture me to get info of watching a bootleg of a movie for "better" audio during opening week out of me. lmao. If you don't like your nearby IMAX cinemas, you should see if there's a Dolby Cinema or another PLF nearby that might have audio you can appreciate more. Our local IMAX has the original sound system from 1999, and it sounds like it. But There's also two theaters with Dolby Atmos sound systems and a Screen X with pretty effective 7.1. Sometimes you just have to branch out a bit.

> that I chose to sit too high up where the acoustics are extremely unbalanced If you know this happens, why do it? I won't go to an IMAX or Dolby screening unless I can get a decent seat in the center sections. And generally it's not that hard even last minute, there's always people cancelling their reservations.

This. Got my ideal IMAX seats memorized E-18/19. This is not rocket science... >I literally walked out of all 3 movies mostly disappointed **and the reason is for seeing them in poor quality imax theatres in bad seat choices**... Em.... ??? Doctor, it hurts when I do this. Don't do that?

You got angry with humanity because people liked a film you didn't at that moment? That is probably the most pathetic thing I could have seen this morning. Angry with humanity? Dramatic much? Get a life.

Was that edited out? I don’t see that in the post.

I’ve had issues there with multiple films. More technical issues though with the reel and lighting coming on.

The acoustics at most IMAX locations are straight up terrible, especially in the upper sections. I've had the same issue where the bass just drowns out everything else and you miss half the dialogue Your home setup with good headphones is probably giving you way better sound balance than those overpriced theater systems. I've started just waiting for the streaming release too because my little setup at home beats most of these "premium" theater experiences

Just being able to control the volume is worth waiting for steaming release.
