The thing IMAX does best is space. Doesn’t matter if it’s real space, fictional space, animated space…if it’s in space, I’m going to watch it in IMAX.

April has 2 dead weekends after Mario. The second weekend is You Me Tuscany and after that is The Mummy. Either of which really demand Imax screens. We will probably get 2 weekends of Mario, then one weekend back to Project Hail Mary. After that Michael comes out, which will take the Imax screens. Then Devil Wears Prada, Mortal Kombat, and In the Grey, all getting one weekend each

dtcstylez10 Mar 30, 2026 +112
Why does devil wears prada need to be in IMAX?
112
nowhereman136 Mar 30, 2026 +84
Because it's going to make a bunch of money and theaters can charge people more if they play it in Imax. I'm not saying I needs to be seen in Imax, but it's still going to take up that theater space because money
84
RobertdBanks Mar 31, 2026 +14
The people this movie appeals to don’t give a shit about imax
14
nowhereman136 Mar 31, 2026 +16
No, but if you show up to the theater, the Imax showing cos be in 10 minutes while the regular showing is in an hour. So they to to the Imax. Or maybe the regular showing is sold out so they go to the Imax theater with more seats. Yeah, they don't care enough to seek out Imax, but they also don't care enough to avoid Imax. They will play whatever movie they think will make them the most money in that theater. More Prada fans will wander into and Imax theater for their movie on opening weekend than Mario fans will a month after its release Also, just throwing it out there, since Imax costs the same to me as a regular ticket on alist, I've seen a ton of movies on Imax that I didn't think deserved to be on that big screen. Weapons, Final Destination, Black Bag, and Him last year. None of those are "Imax movies" but I saw them in Imax because it was convenient for me. I plan to see Prada in Dolby, not because I think it needs to be seen in that format, but because it's better and costs the same. If it's more convenient, I have no qualms about seeing it in Imax

DoomguyFemboi Mar 31, 2026 +7
Why are you and the dude above making assumptions about the viewership of TDWP2 ? I know a few people who wanna see it, and they're people I've been to IMAX with and love it. IMAX suits big action films, sure. But it's also just an all-round amazing viewing experience, no matter what you watch
7
Familiar-Banana-8116 Mar 31, 2026 +6
Everyone is missing the point. Theaters are having a hard time convincing people that the experience in a theater is better then the living room and worth the hassle. The only way to make the argument is by offering things people do not have at home. The discussion about those things regarding normal screens is pretty contentious. Especially when people with 5.1 surround (and better) enter the discussion. But Imax is an 800 lb gorilla. Your movies with a chance at doing better then merely turning a profit go to Imax so they can suck up everyone they can. I say that like it is a bad thing. It isn't. So no, 'TDWP 2' can't really be justified to be in Imax. But it will be cause that is the format that gets the last bit of people out of the houses that might be waiting for it to stream over a normal theater experience.
6
BeebleBoxn Apr 1, 2026 +1
In that case they might as well just run back to back Mama Mia!
1
Familiar-Banana-8116 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Imax isn't perfect. Multiple Imax screens is very hard to do. You contract out to have whatever on the screen for 2 weeks and there isn't a ton of time for other stuff. However, my local Imax does occasionaly play older stuff every now and then. Tuesday's and Thursday's mostly.
1
DoomguyFemboi Mar 31, 2026 +1
I don't understand though, you justify it in your comment, then say it's not justified.
1
Familiar-Banana-8116 Mar 31, 2026
Artisticly you can't really justify it. It will play fine on a smaller screen and enlarging it doesn't get you anything more. Financially it is in a category of films that putting it on Imax will help bring people in. I like going to movies. This isn't my sort of movie, but if it was I would pick a normal theater of Imax for it and save a couple of bucks. But I am not the audience this move is trying to drag in. They are after the, 'We only see one movie a year, our TV at home is fine' people.

warmbananna7110 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Who shows up to a theatre without a ticket, let alone a specific movie/show time in mind? We're long past the days of needing a newspaper to get movie times
2
Organic-Row9514 Mar 31, 2026 +1
No, but paying *more* money for some mediocre shit appeals to them.

2
dtcstylez10 Mar 31, 2026 -2
Saw project hail Mary in IMAX. $60 for the wife and I. A sitter, dinner and it's like a $250 night out. So yes. There are very few ppl in the world worth that money to watch in a screen, if any.
-2
DoomguyFemboi Mar 31, 2026 +1
jfc why are your tickets $30 ?!
1
mennydrives Mar 31, 2026 +1
I paid the same price for ScreenX, which is "we have ~~IMAX~~ Cinemascope at home". I might do IMAX after Mario.
1
rosedraws Apr 1, 2026 +1
Imax in Reading, MA: $16 per ticket for the largest laser screen in the northeast! But now can I get them to bring PHM back?? I paid $23 per ticket for the 1/3 size screen at a little Imax in NH. Still loved the movie, but not blow-my-hair-back while watching.

Am I reading this wrong or are you telling me Guy Ritchie's new movie will be in IMAX
7
nowhereman136 Mar 30, 2026 +11
It's an action movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill and it's the only major release that weekend. I think it's safe to assume it's going to be Imax.
11
bbqsauceboi Mar 30, 2026 +3
I understand that, but when I look at the IMAX calendar for 2025 I don't see it anywhere. Forgive me if this is a dumb question with an obvious answer, but is it common practice for random filler movies like In The Grey to get IMAX showings during the downtime between big releases?
3
nowhereman136 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Yeah I've seen last minute additions that they don't announce until like a week out. Tickets for Devil Wears Prada in Dolby are already on sale. My local Imax isn't showing any showtime for that weekend yet, but I expect it to show up eventually
1
alextoria Mar 30, 2026 +9
i’m looking for project hail mary imax tickets for the weekend after next (april 10/11/12) or the one after that and seeing literally nothing, not even non imax, in any theater in socal for project hail mary. there’s no way the theater run is done right? but it’s also crazy if they haven’t dropped tickets for a movie 2 weeks out.
9
willstr1 Mar 30, 2026 +10
Not sure about your theater, but in my experience other than opening weekend they don't list the showings for movies more than a week out. I think some theaters do it as a rolling next 7 day window, others they list the week's showing on Wednesday or something (so if you look on Tuesday you might not see anything for Thursday because they haven't listed the showings yet, not necessarily because there won't be any showings). With digital projection its not like they have to schedule returning the reels or anything, so they keep the schedule relatively flexible. If a movie keeps selling tickets they keep giving it showings, but as sales dry up they can start phasing that movie out.
10
Boldspaceweasle Mar 30, 2026 +4
Yeah, I noticed that my local AMC and Cinemark have *zero* screens for Project Hail Mary after April 2. How can this thing go from 4,000+ screens for 2 weeks, make a shit ton of cash, and then just vanish? It's only been in theaters 10 days! They don't even want to put it in the small regular screens for it's 3rd weekend?
4
downvote_meme_errors Mar 31, 2026 +2
That's weird, my AMC shows 8 showings on the 4th alone.
2
VegasMatt25 Apr 1, 2026 +2
I just went to book IMAX tickets for this weekend (Las Vegas) and there are no showings after 4/01. I haven't been to a theatre since covid so I'm definitely no expert but pulling a hot moving that says it was "filmed for IMAX" after 2 weeks even if it's eventually coming back seems like a momentum killer.
2
sam_hammich Mar 30, 2026 +2
Same. I saw it opening day, took my girlfriend to see it the following weekend, then she said she wanted to see it again and if we want to do that we have to see it *tomorrow*. On a *Tuesday*. I was shocked, given how well it's doing. Not just IMAX either, after this week it's completely done at my local AMC.
2
jackcatalyst Mar 31, 2026 +2
I don't even like seeing the trailers for the Mummy. No f****** way would I want to see that in iMax
2
NecroCannon Mar 30, 2026 +1
I genuinely gotta escape working at a theater, when it dies, it dies. Looks like the droughts are claiming the machines outside of concessions like the arcade and candy vending machines
1
DIRTY_KUMQUAT_NIPPLE Mar 30, 2026 +91
I tried to go see this at the Montreal IMAX but they were done all showings by Thursday last week. Really crazy to have such a limited run for a movie like this. I'm going to see the Mario movie too but seems really unnecessary to go to an IMAX for it.
91
Steamedcarpet Mar 30, 2026 +13
Normally If a movie has an IMAX showing I’ll see that but this time I just went with Dolby Cinema for Mario.
13
alextoria Mar 30, 2026 +10
yeah i’m in socal trying to see it in imax and there’s zero showtimes after wednesday this week. sad
10
Boldspaceweasle Mar 30, 2026 +15
There seems to be zero showings of ANY theater screens after April 2. This thing is going from 4,000+ screens to... zero? In the span of 10 days? What in god's name is going on?
15
Lucasion Mar 30, 2026 +11
Other than newly releasing movies (e.g., Super Mario Galaxy), showtimes for Thursday-Wednesday don't get finalized until Wednesdays. Project Hail Mary will definitely have standard showtimes this weekend/next week, they're just not posted yet. Check again on April 1.
11
altpoint Apr 1, 2026 +1
Checking again today and still seems like today is the last day… Unless they update it at midnight or something. Asked GPT and others and they say it is likely not going to screen in IMAX for the coming days in specific cities, but might come back in the future, not exactly sure when. Though I am unsure if it will be updated tonight and there will be more screenings next week or what. Maybe, maybe not until the 17.
1
BigChurros Mar 30, 2026 +4
I was checking for tix for Tuesday and it's all packed and then realized there was no IMAX screening of it after that too ugh!! I'm definetly gonna stalk the Scocia page to grab tix the second it is back on IMAX because I cannot miss this watch
4
ardendolas Mar 30, 2026 +1
Yeah, my bud and I basically wound up with not-so-great seats to see it late Saturday night at the Scotiabank because I saw that Mario was taking over the s*** when it comes out. Still worth it (though the sound was a bit too loud in parts, and I'm sure there was a chunk of the movie that was slightly out of focus), but would have preferred waiting a little and getting better seats another night.
1
Bionic_Bromando Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yeah it’s a shame but these days if I can’t see something in IMAX I’m just gonna skip it. It’s like the only theatre experience that justifies the prices.

Ryan Gosling is a perfect fit for this role. between this and First Man, he’s really carving out a niche in great space movies, so definitely catching this in IMAX

I just want ONE screening in the 18+ theatre. I will only ever go if there's guarantee no teenagers or kids.
25
Briggykins Mar 30, 2026 +14
I went today, a Monday, at midday. It felt really decadent. There were no kids and only about ten other people in a huge IMAX screen. I've never experienced such a silent show!
14
die-jarjar-die Mar 31, 2026 +3
Just went tonight to see it for the second time in Imax to show my daughter. It was packed but people were so into it you could hear a pin drop. Great movie.
3
TheBadBull Mar 30, 2026 +3
I lucked out yesterday when I watched it, not one phone out, nobody talking, when there was a silent scene in the movie the only sounds were soft breathing. I hope you get the same experience
3
pm_me_ur_fit Mar 31, 2026 +2
I saw it yesterday, pretty full theater downtown in imax. Saw lots of kids in the crowd. Totally silent! No phones, no talking during the movie. Pin drop silence during the quiet scenes. Was really great
2
smorrow Mar 31, 2026 +2
\>No phones, no talking during the movie.  Would you expect it? Am I simply too British to understand?
2
pm_me_ur_fit Mar 31, 2026 +1
Not expect it, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it. I was more just responding to the comment about wishing for an adults only showing, and sharing my experience that it was totally fine with kids
1
Low_Conversation9046 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Living in Germany sucks for movies because oftentimes you only get dubbed screenings. But when you manage to get a screening in the original language it'll mostly be film fans who know how to shut the f*** up. It's great.
2
THERAPISTS_for_200 Mar 30, 2026 +22
Watched Project Hail Mary in Dolby already, and loved it. Would IMAX be any better?
22
Fadedcamo Mar 30, 2026 +23
I think there are some scenes in space with taller aspect ratios you'd see with imax that weren't in Dolby.
23
Swimming-Tax-6087 Mar 30, 2026 +9
If you can get to a GT IMAX, it’s going to be 75% of the movie that’s in the taller 1.43 aspect ratio. If your Dolby is a 2.39 screen rather than a 1.85, it’s going to be a massive difference in how the movie looks. If your IMAX is 1.9 and Dolby is 1.85, Dolby is probably the better presentation of basically the same picture.
9
THERAPISTS_for_200 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Yeah I think the IMAX (AMC 20 Orange)near me is a Liemax. I think I’ll just watch it in Dolby again lol
1
Swimming-Tax-6087 Mar 31, 2026 +1
The Regal Spectrum Irvine IMAX may do 70mm and if so that might be worth it, but I don’t know the details other than looking into it for a hot minute.
1
sandwichpak Mar 30, 2026 +5
Pretty similar experience IMO. Incredible movie, could have done more with the IMAX cameras though.
5
tiddertnuocca519 Mar 30, 2026 +4
>Pretty similar experience IMO. Lets be clear though, not all IMAX is equal. Digital IMAX theaters that are retrofitted into existing auditoriums(derogatorily referenced as "LieMAX") are not the same thing as the purpose-built, giant-screen IMAX venues that have like 75 foot screens.
4
kermityfrog2 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Also not all IMAX are filmed the same. The most prestigious movies are shot directly on 70mm film. This movie was shot on digital IMAX.
1
jpjcampbell Mar 30, 2026 +2
Saw it in imax and a few of those outside scenes are pretty amazing.
2
KingMario05 Mar 30, 2026 +5
Yes
5
Deep-Television-9756 Mar 31, 2026 +3
IMAX sound is always a disappointment. I don’t care how marginally bigger the screen is. Until IMAX implements object based sound (doubt it), I won’t touch it again. The theaters are also significantly larger, more crowded, and the stadium seating is extremely uncomfortable.
3
humbuckaroo Mar 30, 2026 +17
I'm gonna go see PHM again. I loved it.

52

Because movie theaters like money
27
Tolkien-Minority Mar 30, 2026 +76
Probably because it’s going to be one of the biggest movies of the year why wouldn’t you sell tickets at an enormous premium
76
FourSes Mar 30, 2026 +31
The trailer is full of scenes of characters flying through space, which is pretty much the same justification for IMAX screens that Project Hail Mary has.
31
Nudist-On-Strike Mar 30, 2026 +17
Why wouldn’t it be? It’s an animated spectacle.
17
FassyDriver Mar 30, 2026 +14

3
binky779 Mar 30, 2026 +3
Dallas location is still selling strong for 8:30am and 2:30am screenings. So when are they gonna build more? The demand is certainly there.
3
Anagrama00 Mar 31, 2026 +3
It's pretty idiotic that Amazon didn't arrange for a longer exclusivity window for it. It's still playing in packed IMAX screens in my city only for a f****** dumb kids Mario movie to take over in a few days to half empty theatres. This kind of dumb planning is why movie theaters are struggling.
3
JollyBid187 Mar 30, 2026 +11
I saw it in IMAX, while incredible, I don’t think it’s necessary. Most of the movie takes place inside the spaceship lab and tunnel connecting Bridge thing
11
Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop Mar 30, 2026 +23
I think IMAX was worth it just for the entire Adrian act. Absolutely breathtaking
23
Boldspaceweasle Mar 30, 2026 +9
It was almost a religious experience. That soundtrack is *chef's kiss*.
9
VonMillersThighs Apr 1, 2026 +1
Sounds so damn cheesy but I found myself actually gripping my seat at that scene. So f****** intense, I remember hearing the theater letting out a collective breath at the end.

Funny, I havent watched a film on IMAX in almost 20 years. I wanted to watch Hail Mary on IMAX this Wednesday and saw that Super Mario was taking the spot that day, so I watched it yesterday because of it (that's only 5 days after release in my country) No idea whats the point of watching Mario Galaxy on IMAX, I'm clearly too ignorant, but I was mad about it lol.

Wait this is the best news I’ve heard in a while! I’m at college and the only theater near me is a town over and isn’t a giant screen. But if this is going to be in IMAX when I get home you better fist my bump I’m watching it alllllllll the time! 👎

This is more telling about no other IMAX movie coming after super mario and they need to fill the gap? Or they don’t expect families to spend the extra money to bring their kids to the IMAX screenings of super mario as much as PHM

I got my 3 watches out of the way so I should be good, maybe I should pick up the book…
1
Worried_Position_466 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Read the book. It has a lot more details that are completely left out of the movie that are pretty god damn important and builds a lot more character. The book also has more emotion than I felt from the movie. Also, less poorly timed comedy (specifically towards the end when they had to get him on the ship). The book does go a bit overboard with the "oh man, science and math! So cool!" stuff though.

Linenoise77 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Really glad to hear this. I wasn't on the ball to get tickets for opening weekend, last weekend didn't jive for everyone's schedule, and then the holiday this weekend. Was worried i'd miss out, or have to ditch my family, to see it.

I found it rather shocking that we cannot see PHM at our Imax on easter - it's all blocked up by Super Mario Galaxy. I do understand that families want that movie, but there should have been at least one screening a evening thru the easter weekend

I went to snag tickets this week for PHM and I could not believe it was getting bummed already for Mario. Absolutely laughable to reward what will be a middling animated movie. I bought a standard tickets instead. Wish I had saw this earlier.

Article is paywalled for me. Anyone know if this means more 70 mm showings, or only regular IMAX?

Was hoping to see this at my local theater some time later this week, but literally every single screen is going to be occupied by the god damn Mario movie.

In Barcelona all IMAX screenings were sold out completely, was so frustrated and confused as to why they did not bring any more out.

My IMAX (Jordan's in Reading, MA) Has an open weekend the 18th, between Mario and Michael. Maybe they'll bring PHM back for that? Or they're holding out for some other odd movie to do a mini-run? It seems truly bizarre to not show tickets for what's basically 2 weeks away. I hadn't noticed that IMAX did 2 week runs. I guess this is the first time I would have been going to see the movie every weekend, not just opening weekend.

It was good or fine but it took out a shit ton of stuff that made the book good. I get why they had to do it for time and budget reasons, as usual, but... Like the whole ending was too happy. His decision in the end in the book had more oomph due to the conditions surrounding how the planet affected him. The movie also glossed over, what I consider, very important things like the thing that happens with Antartica, the backstory of the other two astronauts and the other astronauts in general, the struggle in his ship when he discovered the macrophage was eating up all his fuel, and his saving Rocky instead of him just sitting around and hoping Rocky comes back to life.

I didn’t read the book, but I could’ve used a little less ‘quirkiness’ to the film. Maybe this is the way the book is written, but it felt like the gravity of his mission and what was at risk was diminished by all the humour and jokes. It reminded me of a Marvel movie that way. I liked the movie, but I felt there could’ve been more to the story and characters of they spent less time going for laughs.

He did seem goofier than I remembered the character being. Always read Andy Weir before it hits the screen. TOP adaption, but the books are still a tad better. Pretty easy reads as well if you don't get too hung up on some of the technicality.

They had to make choices so that it fits in a reasonable screen time. There’s a couple short scenes I’d personally remove/shorten (the home depot notably), but overall if you take that constraint into account they did a great job. I could have used less of the Marvel-like treatment too but well it still needs to be sellable to a “wide audience” too so… At least they did not add a car chase. The original test screening was 4 hours long so maybe we’ll get a directors’ cut with some of the missing stuff (I expect a lot of it is about Earth).

I was just debating whether I'd have time to make a showing here in a little bit and still be back in time for my WoW raid tonight. It'd be my last opportunity to go see it in Imax before Mario takes over. Guess I should be good afterall, then!

LETS F****** GO, I guess Project Hail Mary will take most of the IMAX screen and The Mummy will take late night showings. Either way all I know is that I’ll take any opportunity to see this in IMAX so I’m happy.

AMAZE! AMAZE! AMAZE! God, I wish they could share screens. But it's so great to see Amazon and IMAX committed to the experience Lord and Miller want.

PHM is must-see-in-IMAX film.

I hate theaters doing this for kid movies. All the imax and Dolby experience are now Mario starting Wednesday. They did this same with the smurfs movie during missions impossible. Theaters really need to keep the spectacle theaters for spectacle movies.

You don't need to see this in IMAX only a couple of seconds of big screen wonder. (also..not a great film)
