In the Philippines we have a joke about this, literally translated it goes: “80 years ago when you see the Japanese coming to your village you shout ‘hide your daughters and wives, the Japanese are coming!’ Now when you see the Japanese coming you shout, ‘here comes the Japanese, bring out your daughters and wives!’” Time is a flat circle over here.

I don’t quite understand the second quote… are they offering their daughters and wives to the Japanese soldiers?
160
yamanagashi Mar 29, 2026 +415
Yeah cause years later they’re businessmen and Japanese with money

not soldiers but rich Japanese businessmen and the likes (well maybe rich soldiers too)

gelattomulatto Mar 29, 2026 +4
see it’s funny bc before they didn’t want their female loved ones to be sexually exploited for an oppressive authority, but now they endorse such actions themselves! My sides are practically in shreds.
4
curiousgeorgeasks Mar 30, 2026 +3
I’m honestly a little surprised at how… callous they seem to be about the fact that they “pimp” out their wives and daughters. But if they’re the ones saying this about themselves, it’s not my place to tell them otherwise. Though if you don’t respect yourself, hard for others to do that for you.

IlikeHutaosHat Mar 30, 2026 +11
It's become a meme in the truest sense of the word, in that you can't ignore it because it's deep within the cultural zeitgeist. A lot of it has to do with the fact that...lots of people are poor here due to corruption, overpopulation, and poor wages. Take your pick. A fastfood burger is considered a luxury for many families, for instance, but people still vote for fuckwads like a dictator's son, and a murderous piece of shit who's now being tried in the Hague. Rampant sex tourism with middle aged losers coming over to find exotic flings and wives is a common site around here, and a lot of people see it as their only way to a comfortable life. Ironic for one of the only Catholic countries in Asia. But here's a bonus meme. All these losers who think they're caucasian superman to the locals, tend to go for young...how do I put this... 'ugly' women. Like, most locals would be scratching their heads, but I guess if you're a sexpat you'd already be pretty fucked in the head.
11
curiousgeorgeasks Mar 30, 2026 +1
I understand the situation, and thus the dark humour, but it’s hard to respect the lack of dignity. Turns out, they’re not actually against pimping out their women, they just want to make sure that they’re appropriately paid for it. I understand it’s also something of a commentary on their own situation, but it’s such a resigned and cynical view of their own worth.
1
gelattomulatto Mar 30, 2026
It’s quite disturbing that sexual exploitation has become a meme, it’s just really heartbreaking, like making fun of victims
0
IlikeHutaosHat Mar 30, 2026 +3
Unfortunately, but I suppose it's a coping mechanism as well.
3
gelattomulatto Mar 30, 2026 -3
For who? are women making the jokes, bc I somehow doubt that, I think there’s only one gender seeing the humor in this
-3
IlikeHutaosHat Mar 30, 2026 +5
More of a wealth gap thing than a gender thing if we're being more accurate. But even telenovelas aimed at the masses, movies, etc glorify the poor girl finding a better life by finding that one special person. Kinda like hallmark movies actually. Who needs success, or a change in the system if all you need is to find prince charming?
5
gelattomulatto Mar 30, 2026 +1
Sex work is always gendered before it is about wealth disparity as it primarily impacts young women. Women are also the only oppressed group whose oppression is romanticized through film and media. You’d never see a movie about slaves who fell in love with their masters. Just bc you call the master Prince Charming doesn’t mean I’m falling for it. Where are all the movies about a poor young pretty boy being the prize of some rich lady?
1
gelattomulatto Mar 30, 2026 +1
I’m sure the women respect themselves, but it wouldn’t appear they’d have much choice in the matter which is what makes this all pretty dark.
1
Fabulous_Ranger1627 Mar 30, 2026 +1
TO SHREDS YOU SAY??
1
Linooney Mar 30, 2026
In WW2, it was a lot more than just not wanting them to be sex objects for an oppressive authority...
0
gelattomulatto Mar 30, 2026 +5
I’m aware, that’s kind of what I’m getting at, that it’s not very funny at all what they are continuing to do to these women
5
Linooney Mar 30, 2026 +3
The latter might be distasteful to us privileged people but hiding your daughter from bayonet wielding sadist Imperial Japanese soldiers vs. hoping they have a better economic future with some well to do Japanese salaryman don't really give the same vibes.
3
curiousgeorgeasks Mar 30, 2026 +1
Ehhh, that’s not really what’s being referred to. Japanese salarymen visit the country on business trips and then frequent brothels. There’s not a whole lot of marrying, relatively speaking. It’s a well known fact about the Philippines. The joke is self-depreciating by implying that Filipinos (themselves) aren’t actually against pimping out their wives and daughters- they just want to be paid appropriately for these services. It’s dark humor as coping. But it also reveals a striking lack of dignity and self respect. And it’s hard to respect that (as an outsider).
1
Sea-Cheesecake301 Mar 29, 2026 +52
Out of all foreigners that come to the Philippines the Japanese are always the most respectful. Maybe out of the awareness of what they did in WW2. We didn't forget the atrocities the Japanese has done to us but we're not going to blame the grandkids for it too. Hate only breeds hate And yes thats only a joke. It's filipino humor saying that relations have flipped. No one is really going to bring their daughter from some "village" because some random ass japanese dude is walking outside. that would be dumb.
52
EscudoLos Mar 30, 2026 +16
Almost all Japanese troops involved in the invasion were killed by the end of the war by the reformed Philippine army & US. So why would we hate them given that the perpetrators met a fitting end? Unlike other places that had Japanese occupiers until the last day of surrender. Japan has also apologised to us far more than they have to Korea & China and funded quite a bit of infrastructure and technological development.
16
yungdragvn Mar 29, 2026 -30
I don’t understand this joke given the Japanese history of forcing Filipino women to become comfort women
-30
2020_sucksPP Mar 29, 2026 +44
The joke is that the living conditions are so bad that you're better off courting nationals of a country that committed war crimes against you just for a chance of escaping poverty
44
Sea-Cheesecake301 Mar 29, 2026 +7
thats not what it means at all lol. i am filipino. its just saying relations have conpletely flipped. you are overthinking

Japan's only being nice because they're the USA's vassal. The day that Japan fully rearms, expect their attitude towards people they see as inferior to themselves like the Philippines, change. Underestimate Japan at your own peril.
-65
yamanagashi Mar 29, 2026 +45
Meh we’re not really worried about that. If East Asia is to be ranked in terms of aggression, China is top 1, we’re already getting abused by Chinese PLA. South Korea is the one that thinks they’re superior to every other race. You don’t really see them arming and acting on those beliefs to push their neighbors around. And they’re an even *bigger* vassal to American capitalist mentalities and weaponry. And they actually have a standing army and military-industrial complex.
45
Synthetic_Kalkite Mar 29, 2026 +10
What’s your and your countrymen’s opinion on China, Japan and SK in general? Are they viewed favourably / suspiciously / hated? I imagine it also depends on the generation
10
DarkPooPoo Mar 30, 2026 +5
There is a lot of Phil-Ch mix ("tsinoys") in PH. I think the general hatred is towards mainland CH. Japan is ok, there's not a lot of them in PH ... SK culture is idolized in PH and there's a lot of SK studying in PH. They said it is cheaper to study in PH than in SK and also they can develop their English in PH. Most of the school subjects in PH are taught in English. I think, in terms of actual general populace, they are all favourable. Online discussions, FB, TikTok etc ... is a bit different. This is just my observation.

Korean consider themselves as the superior Asians, they look down on South and Southeast Asians and hostile against Japanese and Chinese.
3

That's very rude. Quickly cut off trade with South Korea. Southeast Asian countries should sever ties with South Korea.

And I don't believe in the "sins of the father" carrying down to children. I'm Filipino and sure I do hate WW2-era Japan, but it's ridiculous if they were never even existing during any of it, let alone the fact it's so unlikely they'd be involved as a child. It's different if they actually believe in that insanely outdated imperial mindset.
27
royxsong Mar 30, 2026 +2
Japan responded the war crime differently than the Germany. That annoys other SE countries who suffered during the war and after the war
2
Melodic_Wafer_492 Mar 29, 2026 +17
Vietnam is one of the most pro-American countries in the world. People forget things quickly once the generation affected mostly dies off.
17
Duskmourne Mar 29, 2026 +14
Less to do with forgetting WWII and more with growth and just understanding current leaders aren't the same as the ones they had back then. Europe doesn't hold WWII over Germany's head for instance.
14
TheSpanishDerp Mar 29, 2026 +26
Eventually you gotta move on for the better. It was 80 years ago and the Japanese empire is dead. We must be very careful about the sins of the father, or else we’ll be in a perpetual state of hating each other for the benefit of politicians.

I've said this many times, but it's not really accurate to say that Japan "has never atoned for their WW2 crimes against ". Fact is that, they have publicly apologized and paid reparations to many countries, those you named included - and those countries, in turn, accepted the reparations and the apologies when Japan did it. Now, you won't be wrong to say that Japan clearly wants to just ignore and pretend their war crimes either weren't that serious or outright never happened, and that makes their attempts to atone for their crimes less... sincere (for the lack of a better word) than Germany. That much is true as well, but it doesn't change the fact that they still did apologize and paid for what they did and countries accepted their money. To some countries, that was enough to move on. To some other, that wasn't. It just happened that Phillipines seems to be one of the countries belong to the former, and so is mine (Singapore). They aren't really the only or even the minority either, as a few years ago there was that [survey from PewResearchCenter](https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2015/09/02/how-asia-pacific-publics-see-each-other-and-their-national-leaders/) showed that most of Asia Pacific countries view Japan very favorably. If I might add, many countries never apologized or paid reparations for their actions in war either. For example, neither the US nor Korea has officially apologized or paid war reparations to Vietnam and still the latter has been pretty friendly towards both. Each country to its own, but countries' relationships would've been much rockier if all countries require others to atone sincerely.
3
External-Plastic-154 Mar 29, 2026 +1
You're wrong. South Korea did apologize to Vietnam. But since it was a lost war to begin with, it just doesn’t get much attention.
1
Lable87 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Not quite. It's true that some South Korea presidents have apologized to Vietnam, but SK government as a whole didn't consider those official, state-level apologies. There wasn't war reparation either and as recent as 2023, SK government refused to pay a victim (she filed a lawsuit against SK government and sought around $20K in compensation) and appealed the decision after a SK court ruled in favor of her.
1
b__q Mar 29, 2026
I believe due to the cold war Japan has pretty much whitewashed its atrocities from WW2 so they faced fewer consequences compared to Germany. If I remember they're still revising their history and SK is not happy.
0
Imaginary-Group1414 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Japan pays more in reparations to victimized countries as a percentage of its GDP than Germany does.
1
Sea-Cheesecake301 Mar 29, 2026 +4
We didn't forget. Japan and Philippine relations have slowly been mending after ww2. Not to mention China's behaviour and actions have been pushing the Philippines to strengthen military alliances.

Listen we know Russia has plans to invade the Baltics. If they can end the Ukraine war in a way that allows them to spin it as a win without the collapse of the federation. They just need a year or two to rearm. Xi gave the PLA a deadline of 2027 to complete preparations for an invasion of Taiwan. Iran played it’s cards early and tried to cause a collapse of Israel back in 2023 only for it to backfire. Make no mistake ww3 will likely occur within the next decade

i mean world war doesnt have to happen. china can take taiwan. Russia can kill itself fighting for Ukraine. Iran is cooked, they are just doing whatever they can to survive while harming USA's reputation. Nobody is going to stop this shit. It's just super power old ass leaders trying to exit with a bang. China and Russia truly don't like each other, but a war between the two would be stupid. Once Trump is out of office, which he would will be. If not, a civil war in America is more likely than world war 3 at this point. EU isn't joining in any wars with the USA. EU is only planning on defending against Russia. I don't think they would step in for Taiwan.
4
inconvenientpoop Mar 29, 2026 +3
Isn’t Ukraine launching drones via Baltic airspace? People have been fear mongering about China/Taiwan for 15+ years. It won’t be a surprise if it happens, but WW3 isn’t as likely given that only a few nations possess nukes.
3
Different_Height_157 Mar 29, 2026 +6
My prediction is that china would be the one hanging back seeing how things play out then come in and aide the winning side (like US did)
6
Dispator Mar 29, 2026 +3
I completely agree when it comes to China..soft power amplifying. ..and I even think they can use that play to slowly become better allies with taiwan for many reasons. Peaceful-ish reunification could be possible...
3
Different_Height_157 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I’ve never saw taking Taiwan by force as a solution for them. That’s more of a western strategy. Look at Iran and Cuba. They’ll probably use force to have retractors comply once they’re in, but they won’t use force to go in IMO.
1
PapaSmurf1502 Mar 29, 2026 +6
China has taken Tibet and Hunan with force. It's only a Western thing because only the West had the capability. China is trying to build up that capability.
6
sl33pingSat3llit3 Mar 29, 2026 +8
Whether Tibet should be a part of China is a bit more up for debate since it has been a part of China when Qing was in power but became independent for a period during the early 1900s, but that's outside my knowledge and I'll let someone else debate that. What's this about Hunan though? Isn't Hunan just a province in China? I don't recall Hunan trying to become independent. I mean i googled and it seemed like Hunan has been a part of China for over two millennium
8
0987throw654away Mar 29, 2026 +3
I’m gonna guess he made a typo, he meant hainan the PLA amphibious assault to drive the ROC out of hainan was a costly, knife edge operation, that could’ve failed and really weakened the ccp in the early days after victory. I don’t think he’s making the same point about both entities. Tibet - has a claim to independence based on its independence in the post Qing fracture, and its national right to self determination - which is now mostly expired because the Tibetan ‘nation’ is no longer a majority since late 90s maybe as recently as 2010 due to internal migration (which you can call colonisation in an academic non ideological sense). Hainan - that the CCP isn’t immune to the desire to demonstrate power through the use of military force to achieve an objective, and it isn’t incapable of grossly miscalculating the efforts needed for success in a military campaign (especially in the context of an amphibious assault).
3
sl33pingSat3llit3 Mar 29, 2026
Ah yeah I guess Hainan would make sense

They get it in their mind that war is a good thing, and then they try it for themselves, oblivious to how badly theyre about to f*** up.

Most countries have changed greatly from WW2.
57
themathmajician Mar 29, 2026 +11
And some are stuck in the old ways. You don't need amphibious assault ships and artificial island bases to be a great power. Every country needs to choose to benefit from or fall into the trap of the USA's decisions.

bsmithcan Mar 29, 2026 +57
Past enemies become future allies. I know that there are a lot of people here who want to point out the past but, it’s China who is the aggressor currently in that region. They are the ones who are threatening the Philippines sovereignty. If the Chinese government wasn’t being so openly aggressive in that region, there would be no reason to send troops to the Philippines to show that Japan will fight alongside their allies if necessary.

2
Impossibu Mar 29, 2026 +1
Dude if only we could find our military properly we wouldn't consider partnering with Japan. But honestly, given that the Philippines benefits in a rule-based world (and actually can't compete with China 1:1), it probably is just.
