In 'Reacher' Season 1, why does everyone call him by his last name?

And by everyone, I'm specifically talking about his mom during the flashbacks. Edit: I feel like i need to clarify. I've known lots people that go by their last name. None of them can go by their last name with family that shares that name.

It’s the way he prefers to be called. It’s also how he’s reference in all the books.

It's from the books, everyone calls him Reacher even his own mother. I don't think it's ever explained, it's just what everybody does

His parents calling him Reacher is the right amount of ridiculous for this show. They saw him and knew right away that this was Reacher.

Because he asks them to. It's ongoing through the show. "It's just... Reacher" is something he says to almost everyone he meets for the first time. Doesn't even want his rank used if I remember [correctly.No](http://correctly.No) reason is really given, but the strong military culture throughout his all life and his extreme discipline go along with that.

If you ever played sports or been in the military, its just how people call each other and it helps to differentiate between the same first names.

Reacher is more memorable than Jack. Heck, I went by my last name college. I had friends at graduation ask why my parents were calling me “Brian.” And I had to be like “Because… that’s my name?”

I was in Elementary school with a kid that ***everyone***, students and faculty alike, called Ernesto. And I don't just mean like his teachers would call him that, I mean the Principal would call him Ernesto. One day, I asked him if that was his first name, and I don't remember how he looked at me, but I imagine it was some sort of mildly confused look, and he told me his first name was David, with Ernesto being his *surname.* When I say I was be-f******-fuddled, you'd better believe it.

My friend's husband only goes by his last name. So she calls him his last name, even though it also became her last name after they got married. And their kids' last name. So she's Mary Smith and she calls her husband Smith. It's weird.

I feel like some people with common names prefer to go by their last names. Also, some people who play sports get used to being called by their last names because that’s what’s on their jersey so that’s what most people call them. Most of my life I was referred to as just my last name.

They're getting the gimmick over. Reacher is basically pro wrestling. It's idiots talking themselves into thinking they can take the big guy and then they don't while audience points and laughs.

Yeah, its a guilty pleasure show. Stupid as all hell but fun. Kinda like the Fast and Furious movies. Ritchson beat the guy down because the other guy jumped out in front of him while on his bike and endangered both him and his children's safety. It was deserved because the guy wouldn't quit getting in his face and f****** with his bike after multiple attempts from Ritchson to disengage and leave. He gave him a few pops to the face, ended the encounter, and left.
