india’s been a solid partner to Burkina Faso for a while now, doing everything from setting up solar pumps for farmers and offering uni scholarships to sending over essential meds during the pandemic.

I knew someone attending university in the US from Burkino Faso on an education visa. It was 2008, and he showed me a 1,200 usd smartphone he had just bought. Although I was a gamer at that time and built my own rig I had no idea phones could ever reach that price. I asked him to tell me about Burkino Faso, and the one thing he said was kids have fun using homemade slingshots to kill lizards. He made it sound like it was a big deal.

I think it is the fault of people turning away from legacy media and instead getting more news from social media. The algorithms are designed to bait you into interacting with posts. Whereas in legacy media, even though most of those channels are trp hungry, they put up some 'feel good' story on the screen so you subconsciously see something nice even if there are 500 sirens going on in the channel.

FESPACO - the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou. (The capital of Burkina Faso is Ouagadougou.) I went to the festival with work in 2003, had one of the best weeks of my life there. It’s a beautiful country, and the people of Ouga partied hard. Unfortunately… Burkina Faso is now in the hands of the junta and under constant attack from al-Quaeda and ISIL.

A country ranked 102 in Global Hunger Index (GHI), is sending food aid to another country, which is better ranked at 98. Isn’t it diabolical? It’s really admirable to see one country stepping up to help another in a time of need
6
Yorker_length Apr 2, 2026 +32
I get what you mean but rice is one thing india has plenty of. So plenty that every year tonnes of rice is going to rats and wastage while in the government storages. Govt does provide free rice of 5kgs to 800 million people every month. Still there's lot more in the storage. Better to give it as an aid than let it rot
32
PermitCivil Apr 2, 2026 +24
GHI isnt measuring "starvation" alone, its also measuring nutrition. for india that means that we get that ranking because we don't get proper nutrition (lack of protein, excess of carbs); not that people are going hungry.
24
kaladin_stormchest Apr 3, 2026 +1
That makes sense. Food is heavily subsidized for those that need it here, i don't think "starvation" is a major problem anymore

Before people start circlejerking, that's a whole lot of 433,000 US dollars at current market prices.

Yeah, you should send the people there a million dollars. I'm sure they will be happy to eat the money.

A country that can barely feed its own people, sends food to another. India’s priorities are messed up
-280
lazymomo5 Apr 2, 2026 +172
India has enough reseves of foodgrains to feed it's people for months, and more. You'll be surprised that the west was requesting India to release of buffer stocks just a couple years ago to ease global food prices amidst Russia Ukraine war.

106
No_Tree_8144 Apr 2, 2026 +66
your take is off by like a decade or so my guy. india doesn't really have an issue with feeding its people anymore. and hasn't for a while. the biggest issue at this point is nutrition because theres a lack of protein in the diet. and that's mostly cuz indians eat carb heavy food. sending rice is hardly a concern for india. they have more than enough. matter of fact 800 million indians get about 5kg of free rice/wheat every month for *free*
66
Matthew94 Apr 2, 2026 -19
> matter of fact 800 million indians get about 5kg of free rice/wheat every month for free It’s not free when it’s the government dumping overproduction due to pumping public money (subsidies) into the industry. You’re still paying for it. Some day you guys will understand how markets work. Until then you’ll keep trailing.
-19
No_Tree_8144 Apr 3, 2026 +12
it's not rlly dumping overproduction. a lot of indians are just so poor that not having to spend money on things like rice/wheat actually goes a really really reallyyy long way. instead of spending that money on rice, they can often times save up for their children's education, or improve their quality of life in a certain way that simply has far more ROI in the long run. it's literally one of the reasons how india was able to eliminate "extreme" poverty or reduce it drastically over the past decade+. being able to spend money towards other things stimulates the economy far more than spending it on basic survival such as food. the next step has been to reduce malnutrition. currently in india they track *half* of all the 0-6 year olds in the country. they track how the kid is growing on a month to month basis and give directives on if the child is falling behind in terms of food wasting, food stunting, or underweight for their age. it'll take at least another decade for these things to show major changes since it's entirely structural. I can guarantee you the people involved in this are significantly more qualified than a Listnookor like u lmao
12
HumanWithResources Apr 3, 2026
Which is it? Cannot feed its own population or overproduction?

47
MilkConsistent3716 Apr 2, 2026 +46
Yeah a country which gives 5kg of food grains per person to around 800 million people free is barely feeding it's own people right right
46
wo_kya_hobe Apr 2, 2026 +17
>A country that can barely feed its own people You can feed nearly 260 million people only with the grains that the f****** rodents manages to eat here. In other words we can feed an entire country with only our wasted grains and not even notice it(well maybe the rodents will).
17
LostInAPortal Apr 2, 2026 -27
Stating that your country wastes grains that could feed 260M people isn’t worth bragging about. All it does is highlight how inefficient the storage pipeline is
-27
wo_kya_hobe Apr 3, 2026 +4
Please share the "zero waste" techniques with us o great one. It's insanely small amount of our total grain yield. Some fractional amount isn't the to testament to our inefficiency that you think it is. It highlights we can feed almost any country with the rounding errors.
4
LostInAPortal Apr 3, 2026
> we can feed almost any country with the rounding errors Yeah, right. Any country except your own

the biggest issue with india isnt food production. india produces more than enough food. theres a couple reasons for malnutrition and they're more structural so it'll take longer to fix. 1) like you said poverty plays a huge role. ppl can afford wheat and rice but stuff like eggs, or meat consistently is a lot harder. 2) the hunger issue was solved relatively recently. a lot of mothers in india didn't grow up with enough food and dont eat enough nutritious food while pregnant which leads to low birth weight for a child which starts off a cycle of malnutrition. 3) sanitation. again until recently india had a lot of sanitation issues which meant children got sick a lot more and made the absorption of nutrients drop from whatever low level it was alr at. 4) diet. indian cuisine in general is very carb heavy. and not protein heavy. so this leads to nutrition issues even for kids that aren't growing up in abject poverty. a lot of these issues are structural that take *decades* to fix. for example fixing the overall starving and sanitation (still got some ways to go for this one) issues took over a decade. the other stuff like poverty and diet education is gonna take another 10+ years maybe.

jackathigh Apr 2, 2026 +34
Because that person is ignorant and racist a******. Malnutrition is a difficult and complex problem, especially for large countries. Every country in the world faces it. https://www.worldhunger.org/recent-news-about-death-from-malnutrition-in-the-united-states/ https://www.reuters.com/article/world/millions-go-hungry-in-wealthy-canada-and-some-die-young-as-a-result-idUSKBN1ZJ0JD/

Matthew94 Apr 2, 2026 -3
Malnutrition in the west is due to choice. It is not the same as with India.
-3
baithammer Apr 2, 2026 +5
No, economic realities determine malnutrition in the majority of cases in the west, as food choices are often curtailed by costs.
