The Danes are now quietly dusting off the Sound Toll.

UK and France are looking at the English Channel/La Manche. Not really, I'd hope our governments aren't *that* stupid.

Canada also for Northwest Passage?
19
noir_lord 4 days ago +7
Much like UK/France, I fully expect Canada to respect UNCLOS.

EstablishmentFull797 4 days ago +15
Canada could conceivably have a legitimate claim under UNCLOS that key parts of the NW passage are Canadian internal waters, and there fore sovereign territory they could impose tolls for use of

TongsOfDestiny 4 days ago +10
> Canada could conceivably have a legitimate claim No, Canada's claim is legitimate. The waters of the NW Passage are within the Canadian baseline, given that the arctic archipelago that confines the passage is all inhabited Canadian territory

Oh I’m aware, I fully expect Canada won’t. In fact I’d be positively shocked if they did, whatever revenue it generated wouldn’t offset the reputational damage or the precedent it’d set when an advanced western economy did it. Freedom of navigation has been the rule since the British Empire would rock up with a gunboat and explain it (not that they cared about others but they wanted their trade unmolested, so in fairness did the other colonial maritime powers). To a large extent that mantle got passed from the UK to the US. Especially in a world where Canada is looking more beyond the US for partners.

From what I understood it wasn't for revenue. Rather to ban bad actors from using the passage....mostly Russia due to the Ukraine war. At least that is what the push for claiming the passage was originally for.

It’s easy toll to set up, considering no one takes it.

This is old old news. Malaysia says no. Singapore says no. Indonesia in the end says it is just a joke.

A Prime example of AU news with lightening speed staying relevant to ever so volatile world.

Not only is the news old but it's also wrong, Malaysia did not suggest this idea at all but they reported that Sugiono (the one who suggested it) as Malaysian Foreign Minister when he is actually Indonesia's Foreign Minister so yeah they are not only slow to report it but also got it wrong on top of it.

It's channel 9 - It is no more "news" than Fox is, it is a mix of propaganda and self-serving rhetoric. Worth reporting to MediaWatch, but they are pretty busy.

This is BS news. Malaysia has never said anything of the sort and straight up said NO when Indonesian politician (1 fella) brought it up

I'm considering setting up a toll for the sidewalk in front of my house.

noir_lord 4 days ago -18
It's only valid if a neighbour from streets away comes past and bricks all your windows, then you can charge the toll after you brick your immediate neighbours windows and the rest of the town will go "if that's what it takes for you to stop bricking windows".

The article quoted Sugiono as Malaysian foreign minister when he is the Indonesian foreign minister. Great reporting guys.

Zero chance China would let them do that.
33
noir_lord 4 days ago +20
Yep, this was posted a week ago and I pretty much said "That's how you get the PLAN to pop by for a visit". It likely contravenes UNCLOS so China absolutely will sail Warships back and forth to make a point, the same point made when Western Militaries do freedom of navigation transits around the Spratly's. Likely another consequence of the middle east mess.

Lol worse this is how you'll get China, USA, and EVERYONE with a major navy on the same f****** side. The Malacca Straits is a crucial waterway for all international trade. There's no way the powers will let this slide.

I_Push_Buttonz 4 days ago +6
> The Malacca Straits is a crucial waterway for all international trade. There's no way the powers will let this slide. All of what you said is just as true for Hormuz and there is essentially zero pushback from China against Iran claiming it and saying they will control access to it and charge a toll forever.
6
analoggi_d0ggi 4 days ago +6
Hormuz is different as its a war between a world power and a country allied to another world power. China benefits from an alliance with Iran so they really can't castigate their allies too much. If Malaysia/Indonesia just started blocking Malacca for the lulz its going to be a scenario that benefits absolutely no one else. Its likelier that the powers will be on the same page on it.

Salty_Pop_3888 4 days ago +1
Granted the order is reversed, but you really wouldn't want to be Iran right now. If Indonesia ever tried closing the Malacca, they'll face isolation and destruction comparable to Iran. Iran can do it because there is not much else to lose, Indonesia won't because it's leaders don't want to be overthrown, by its people in a protest or an election,, by the CIA, or by good old Assassination, after completely avoidable sanctions and possibly war.

streamofthesky 4 days ago
I said the same thing about Iran closing Hormuz a year ago, and yet the entire world has just let them do it. No longer as certain that any countries would step in if they did this, either. I personally think if Iran does toll Hormuz, then Malacca should be tolled for Iran and Chinese ships until the Hormuz toll goes away.

I find it funny that Australia keeps getting their info wrong about what’s going on with their literal next door neighbors. Last year they said Indonesia allowed Russian air planes to land at our Air Force base (we didn’t) Now this. Not only is this an old news, nothing came out of it. Even Indonesia, the one who proposed this, back paddled.

“Senior politicians” in the article seems to be referring to age (senility), rather than senior (ranking in administration).
2
zaevilbunny38 4 days ago +1
There were over 100 official acts of piracy in the straits last year and at least the same number that wasn't reported. All Indonesia needs to do is state any vessel that doesn't pay the toll will be publicly listed and the maritine forces won't intervene if something happens.

If I've learned one thing on the internet, it's this: "Never feed a toll."

I'm glad that America showed to Iran that they can easily make a toll through their own strait and now countries next to a vital trading route are considering them also thanks Trump

> can easily make a toll We literally have a blockade on it and are choosing who crosses. 😂 Nobody's paying their toll anymore

THEY NEVER WOULD HAVE DONE THAT IF KAMALA WERE PRESIDENT. Since Trump is so full of "never would've happened if I were President." He's so full of shit. He says that about the Russian War, and yet he can't get a cease fire after over a year, when the countries are worn down from years of fighting and theoretically more willing to negotiate.

The US Navy will challenge this, as they always do, by sailing through, knowing they will not be fired upon because they know there would be severe consequences.

The US will never back any country putting tolls on international waterways. The US backs freedom of navigation and it is willing to enforce it even against its own allies. For example, after WW2, Denmark wanted to continue charging tolls to ships passing through its waters, until the US decided to conduct a freedom of navigation operation through Denmark. The Danes didn't dare fire at the US warships and that waterway was opened for all ships for the first time in history.

False. The US never proposed that. The US believes in freedom of navigation for all.

“Much of China's global trade is dependent on access to the strait, and the superpower in the region retains a lot of clout.” This should tell you all you need to know about this move and who is really behind it.

Which politicians? every country has their share of stupid MAGA-type politicians who say stuff like this. This would be horrible for the region's economy even if they give Chinese ships a free or c**** toll.

I feel like I watched a video where someone claimed the Hormuz toll meant globalism was over and privateers+sound tolls were back in fashion and somehow it would lead to Denmark getting nuked. Hmm, maybe some of that is true
