Is it supposed to be an homage to James Bond? All of it feels very Sean Connery - from costume, to setting, poison, double crossing, etc. Is that just a coincidence because that set up was trendy at the time or were they trying to make Indy a more sauve and Bond-esq character. Especially because he is suppose to younger in Temple
Famously, Spielberg wanted to direct a Bond film and George Lucas convinced him that he had a better idea. That idea was Indiana Jones.
So yes, I think it is a nod to James Bond just like having James Bond as Indiana's father in The Last Crusade is a nod to the same.

Bond is why Indy had a different love interest in each film of the original trilogy as well.

the biggest mistake of the films. But I can't really stay mad since Spielberg found his wife.

Flawed as it is, I could never turn against **Skull** simply because they finally wised up and brought Marion back.

For anyone who doesn't know, the core driving ethos of Indiana jones is “Anti James Bond” which can translate any number of ways, where at times it mirrors bond at others it’s the complete opposite

Moneypenny, why is it always snakes?
Oh James
No seriously, I’m in a room full of snakes and they’re trying to kill me. Call Q and ask him how I can kill them with this watch he gave me

Yes. On vacation in Hawaii after the opening of a new hope, speilberg ssid he wanted to do a bond film. Lucas said he had something better and pitched Indiana jones. Or vice versa. Opening to temple of doom is very much a bond homage

The Club Obi-Wan seuence at the start of Temple of Doom was originally a setpiece in Raiders about Indy collecting the pieces of the headpiece of the Staff of Ra. It was set in a warlord's pleasure palace and included the use of the giant rolling gong as a shield to escape by diving out a window.
They had to cut it out of Raiders for length, but Lucas and Spielberg liked it so much, they recycled it for IJATTOD. Once they had the idea, they resurrected Lucas' original concept for Indy of being a high-living international playboy. Lucas always wanted Dr. Jones to be living high off the hog off his earnings as a grave robber, but Spielberg wanted him to be more of an everyman.

It’s supposed to be an homage to the classic musicals of the 30s and 40s like Yankee Doodle Dandy and Anything Goes…hence the song.

I wouldn't look more into it than realizing that Indie is an adventurer getting into trouble over valuable items and beautiful women in an exotic location.
