I guess i'm not emotionally invested enough in any of this to sit through a sappy musical montage, especially when the animation and visual style doesn't really exceed a '94 Saturday morning cartoon.

Care to elaborate? This doesn't seem like the type of show where the creators are arrogant. They're following a comic series from 2003, have frequently addressed flaws (like the cheaper art style) and their pipeline needing to improve. And the storyline doesn't seem to be ass-kissing heroes or anything. Everyone seems flawed in it.
So I don't get what you mean by "up its own ass".

I actually only read the comics some time ago and by the time I noticed it getting worse I was unfortunately already invested. It wasn't really hate-reading it rather than wanting to see it through, see if it gets better at the end. It did not sadly. Seeing this clip just reminded me of that.
