Iowa shares sensitive voter data with the Department of Justice
Iowa shared voter registration data — including sensitive personal information — with the U.S. Department of Justice, Secretary of State Paul Pate announced Tuesday. The DOJ's demand for state voter lists has raised concerns about data privacy.

> At least 13 other states have agreed to provide their full voter registration data to the DOJ, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. The DOJ has sued 30 states for refusing to provide the data. This the "small government" that Republicans wanted?

Too true 15-20 years ago I heard about a group of people (a miniature intentional community - maybe a half dozen or dozen families) who were pacifist, so to avoid paying for war via taxes they kept their overall income (plus tax deductions) low enough that they essentially paid no income tax. As a group they pooled resources to live as cheaply as possible. I don't know if I could do that but I admire their commitment to their principles

The stakes are extremely high though. The only reason the world survived Nazi Germany is because the Allies invaded and killed/captured the key figures of the regime. If the US falls into a dictatorship, and the new Allies try the same thing, it'll erupt into a nuclear war that kills us all. If no one does anything, the US will spread its cancer to the rest of the world by force and we plunge into a new era of global tyranny. It's a fight worth having but this is the absolute final chance.

Honestly this kind of attitude feels like the kind of exceptionalism that's a part of why Americans are just standing around and shrugging while their freedoms are stolen one piece at a time. Most other countries aren't Hellholes that only get luxury by the grace of the US. By many standards, there are a lot of developed nations that have a better quality of life and *have* had a better quality of life for a long time. They aren't lining up to save the US. A lot of them are ready to stake their claim as the new world leader in whatever fields they excel in. All the people standing around with their thumbs in their pockets saying, "It can't collapse, people will save us!" are going to be really disappointed. The only way to keep certain things is to fight for them, and the US is a nation where nobody is interested in fighting for anyone but themselves.

Europe thinking they will become the world leader and not that fascism will control the globe are seriously delusional. It's not just the US on their last legs, it's western hegemony. Everyone in the world is too busy being a selfish POS to take on a world affecting problem in fascism. Hell, half of Europe sees what's happening in the US and started spending MORE money on China and Russian exports. It's laughable that they are going to become the world leader. The time is LONG past for leaders that will tell these powers to kick rocks and focus on building lasting stability instead of putting extra money in their own pockets. We need that everywhere. Poland is already teeing up the next Putin stooge to replace Orban, but people want you to believe that this is just a US problem and there's no reason to care in Europe. You're not gonna like where this leads, nor is anyone else that doesn't enjoy living under a boot.

The world will move on without us, other countries still have functioning democracies they do not need ours to stay for theirs to work. Our country is not a shining beacon or example, we haven't done too many things better than countries aside from military power. The country has been behind the curve of other developed countries with things like civil rights and citizen welfare. When other developed countries have had free healthcare established for a while now, the US has been playing one step forward two steps back for decades. It leads you to wonder what have we really done that makes us a country others should look up to? Free speech was nice, it wasn't isolated to the US though. The US has certainly driven advancements in science, particularly during the space race, but those days are over. I believe there was a time when the US meant something to some countries, but to anyone following its history the US has been driven by war for profiteering and control for a very long time. That has always been visible

It's definitely dead. Democracy is like a parachute - if it doesn't work pretty much how it's supposed to everytime, you don't really have one. Not every election needs to be rigged for it to still not count as a functional democracy, just as your parachute only needs to fail once to kill you.

How is technocracy or oligarchy the same as democracy? It’s been over since Regan. Since politicians have been paid for and by corps. This isn’t democracy anymore. It’s not comparable. But it can be brought back. Pretty sure people out number the rich ghouls 99.99 to 1.

My state Wyoming was the 1st to openly share voter data, our Secretary of State Chuck Gray a nepo baby loser whose dad funded his campaign, is a Trump loyalist. Chuck Gray and his bold 4'11" balding frame had a radio show on his daddys radio station rose to fame over discussing voting illegalities and drop boxes, in a state that is 90% Republicans with one drop box in the SOS office bolted to the wall.

Wyoming is such an ironic state to complain about voter illegalities. 90% of the people you talk to will be voting republican and have no mind to hear a different opinion. And yet, it’s like some people aren’t radically republican enough. It’s insane. (I am from Wyoming but no longer live there so I’m not talking entirely out of my ass)

Wyoming is an ironic state to complain about federal voting at all because they have 2 senators and 1 congressman too many.
25
JustHereForCookies17 5 days ago +14
That's probably a hilarious joke if you live somewhere with representation, but it sounds really shitty to someone who lives in DC and doesn't have any voting representation on Capitol Hill, but somehow needs Congress to approve our annual city budget.
14
malhans 5 days ago +2
2 senators is mandated by the great compromise of 1787 and 1 representative in the house is the minimum as mandated by the constitution. Makes sense where you’re coming from in theory, but why exactly does Wyoming deserve no representation? Because of how the system was constructed over 200 years ago? You can critique the system without saying that Wyoming deserves to have no representation in the government. I’m happy to criticize Wyoming all day everyday but for as many people who talk about the voting power of Wyoming compared to somewhere else, no one really brings up how no one gives a shit about winning Wyomings votes. They’re basically worthless already. I hear you on the irritation but it is actually bonkers to say that there’s too many congressman when that is literally the minimum that is written into the constitution.
2
JustHereForCookies17 5 days ago +5
As someone who lives in a non-state (DC) with NO Congressional voting power, thank you for this comment.
5

Absolutely! I hate this idea that a place being low population or small (dc) means no representation is deserved. It’s actually insane to me that DC has no congressional voting power.

Yet, at least 30 other states are resisting the DoJ request. Iowa could have been one of them. This sounds more like a GOP "I can have my cake and eat it too" scenario. Complain about the process but go along to help the administration's voter suppression plans.

> "We are legally obligated to comply with the request, but we do not take the obligation to turn this information over lightly," Pate said in a statement. The [1993 NVRA](https://www.congress.gov/bill/103rd-congress/house-bill/2/text) he's citing was written to limit what the federal government can pressure states into, not enable it. Thirty other Secretaries of State read the same statute and landed on the opposite conclusion about what's legally required. "Legally obligated", PFFFFFFT

I really don’t know why Trumps opponents keep saying just wait until the elections and we’ll vote him out Everything he’s doing from collecting voter data to flooding his political opponents states with external federal police and troops loyal to him and only him speaks volumes of a man who is not going to entertain the idea of there being another election When the time for election draws near watch how quickly another imaginary terror group like “Cartel De Los Soles” appears and that this never before heard of group will entirely be composed of all the people on the voter lists who happen to vote for anyone not him (Cartel De Los Soles doesn’t actually exist in Venezuela, it was just a nickname used by Venezuelans to refer to a group of corrupt military officers with the Soles, translation “Sun,” referring to the emblem on their military uniforms, Trump made it into a scary “Narco Terrorist” group in order to have an “Enemy” for his invocation of war powers)

Greg Abbott gleefully handed Texas voter info over. He's so excited to support the Epstein administration and do his part to disenfranchise millions of us. **What do Trump and the Republicans intend to do with the sensitive voter data from states that they are aquiring?** Short answer: they plan to use those state voter files and linked data to target, mobilize, and challenge votes — i.e., voter microtargeting, turnout operations, fundraising/communications, voter‑roll management, and legal/ballot‑challenge work. Key uses (concise): * Microtargeting and persuasion: combine state voter files with commercial data to build detailed voter profiles for tailored ads, mail, calls, and GOTV messaging. * Turnout and get‑out‑the‑vote (GOTV): prioritize contacts and resources toward persuadable or likely supporters to boost turnout. * Fundraising and donor targeting: match voting records with consumer/donor data to identify likely contributors and optimize asks. * Voter‑roll maintenance and challenges: identify inactive, duplicate, or out‑of‑precinct registrations to prepare legal challenges or purges where permitted. * Message testing and analytics: run experiments to find most effective messaging and delivery channels. * Coordination with allied groups: share or license data among campaigns, party committees, and allied PACs/NGOs to coordinate efforts. * Legal/defense prep: use data to investigate alleged fraud, prepare litigation, or support recounts/challenges. Limitations and risks: * Legal and state rules vary: some states restrict commercial use or resale; access can require credentials and agreement to state terms. * Privacy and public‑opinion concerns: combining public voter files with consumer databases raises privacy and ethical issues and invites scrutiny. * Accuracy limits: commercial data and modeling can be imperfect; misuse can backfire politically or legally.
