Oh yeah? Do tell. Are you considering the Iberian Union as the "Spanish Empire"?
7
nanoman92 Mar 26, 2026 +19
Yes of course. Formed by the Portuguese, Castillan, and Aragonese crowns. There wasn't anything making the castillian and aragonese ones a distinct entity other than people thinking in 2026 terms. And in fact, the fact that orders came from Madrid is one of the main reasons why it was lost, had Portugal remained completely independent, it would have prioritised it more.
19
MarioSewers Mar 26, 2026 +8
Yes, resources were spent on waging war with England & the Dutch, the former which had been an allied of the Portuguese crown for centuries, leading to a stark decay of influence and control over the former far east trade.

8
Bhraal Mar 26, 2026 +6
More like theoretically slightly less expensive oil for everybody. Oil is a global commodity. Once it's passed the strait it can go anywhere, and even if it was shipped to Spain/Europe it would then be loaded onto a ship for transport to whoever will pay the most for it / has the ability to refine it. That said, who knows how Iran would react to reflagging, or if it changes the position of the insurance companies. Even if the Ayatollah himself gives his personal guarantee, shipping companies won't risk it unless their insurers go along with it.
6

42
paintbucketholder Mar 26, 2026 +20
So six people?
20
macrocephalic Mar 26, 2026 +6
Only if you don't want the front to fall off. Probably has to be made out of things that aren't cardboard too.
6
AnAncientBog Mar 26, 2026 +227
That would result in a massive improvement in the compensation and safety standards for people working on tankers, and would probably increase prices more than the current situation in the straight. EU standards are even higher than US standards, and a US flagged carrier has 3-4x the operating costs of the current standard applied to ships in the gulf. https://www.maritime.dot.gov/sites/marad.dot.gov/files/docs/resources/3651/comparisonofusandforeignflagoperatingcosts.pdf
227
True_Inxis Mar 26, 2026 +56
For what percentage are the operating costs of ships in the strait impacting revenue or earnings on oil transportation? An impact of 10%, quadrupled to 40%, is quite different than an impact of 0.1%, quadrupled to 0.4%...
56
Garod Mar 26, 2026 +33
Like like crew salary trippling is going to make an iota of impact on the operating expense of an oil tanker. Just a quick search says an Oil Tanker consumes about $10k-$25k per day. Cew seem to make 2k a month and senior staff 13k-16k a month. So maybe 4 Senior and 25 crew. So roughly 110k a month which is 4-5 days of fuel cost. And that's not even factoring all the other costs.
33
True_Inxis Mar 26, 2026 +14
I understand your comment, but if a tanker nets, say, $50kk per round trip with the oil it's transporting, those $110k a month could be barely making a dent in the earnings
14
macrocephalic Mar 26, 2026 +21
Where are you from where kk is a way to say million?
21
xylopyrography Mar 26, 2026 +24
Your source is 16+ years old so probably should take that with a grain of salt. I don't think the compensation is even relevant. On the extreme side let's say 30 people at an extra $100k/year per per person is an extra $3 M. 15 Million barrels of oil annually @ $65/barrel is $975 M per tanker. We're talking about $0.20/barrel for extremely high wages.
24
Garod Mar 26, 2026 +5
Only seniors earn 100k the able-bodied crew only earn 40k a year so total annual cost is probably more around 1.5M per year so half your estimate.
5
xylopyrography Mar 26, 2026 +11
I was just making an extreme example just to emphasize how irrelevant was. And in reality I imagine as time goes on vessels will have fewer and fewer staff especially if they had to pay them that much.
11
8spd Mar 26, 2026 +5
The EU having higher standards than the US is so non-controversial that it doesn't even need to be backed up with a source.
5
Lonely_Dragonfly8869 Mar 26, 2026 +8
But it being prohibitive does need a source. Thinking taking care of workers is not possible for one of the most lucrarive industries on earth is capitalist brainrot

4
ManWithoutUsername Mar 26, 2026 +6
Yep. Probably all Spanish cargo ships (and EU) use a flag of convenience It's a disgrace to Europe that they've allowed this for decades. They impose controls and requirements that no one will comply with because they can use another country's flag. It would be better to relax the requirements and enforce them rather than impose ones that nobody is going to comply with. It's yet another political and bureaucratic absurdity
6

7
wng378 Mar 26, 2026 +46
There are actually several new Spanish ships that are seeking passage. El Senor Geraldo Ford for example.
46
MightBe465 Mar 26, 2026 +65
Could you give a source on that? Not asking to cause a stir, I'm just not sure how to accurately look into it. Easier, for example, to look up whether a nation imports oil, but that could be based on commercial vessels not affiliated with Spain for all I know.
65
TabulatorSpalte Mar 26, 2026 +108
The European Commission releases the origin of all energy imports to the EU, EU receives less than 10% of its oil and gas via the strait. It is affected by the global oil price but not directly by the blockade itself. Fertiliser is being imported though.
108
MightBe465 Mar 26, 2026 +31
A little more general than the information I was asking about but interesting in an of itself. Personally I think the fertilizer chokepoint is an underacknowledged issue in all this. Edit: But I'll look more into EC reports to see if it answers my question too. Thanks for the lead.
31
Schnoofles Mar 26, 2026 +11
Agricultural industry in Norway is already reeling from the changes coming to the fertilizer situation. Sales were up 30% over the norm earlier and trending upwards as farmers are scrambling to stockpile in anticipation of massive price surges and potential availability issues
11
ArenSteele Mar 26, 2026 +16
Well I’ve heard repeatedly that the US doesn’t need Canada for anything, and we send them 90% of their fertilizer. So maybe buy your fertilizer from Canada!
16
TabulatorSpalte Mar 26, 2026 +7
Would buy fertiliser and LNG from Canada. US supplies 40% of EUs LNG at the moment.
7
ArenSteele Mar 26, 2026 +8
Problem with Canadian LNG is we ship it from the west coast. We don’t have a pipeline east and the cost of building one to supply Europe would take 50 years to break even, assuming 100% EU market share Maybe when the NorthWest passage is fully open, or it’s going to have to go through Panama
8
EisVisage Mar 26, 2026 +3
That doesn't mean "Spain has no ships that go through it" at all though?
3
Borkz Mar 26, 2026 +6
Oil and gas aren't the only things that go through the strait
6
AssistX Mar 26, 2026 +10
Spain primarily ships LNG through the strait, the LNG comes from Qatar and Iran decided to destroy Qatar's LNG production. So Spain has received 0 LNG imports from Qatar since the start of the war.
10
zdrums24 Mar 26, 2026 +10
I bet this is trolling. Spain was the first country to really rebuke trump meaningfully over this.
10
bockers7 Mar 26, 2026 +37
They literally have one in the Arabian gulf
37
NoBSforGma Mar 26, 2026 +26
I don't think that's true. I think Spanish ships DO pass through the Strait - maybe not many, tho. There is also a thing where some commercial ships are flagged in another country so it could be that some of the ships, while not really Spanish, are "flagged" as Spanish.
26
The_BeardedClam Mar 26, 2026 +7
That's called flags of convenience. It's used so the corpos can maximize profits.
7
NoBSforGma Mar 26, 2026 +4
Yes, I understand that. I was just pointing out that ships that are registered in Spain are not necessarily Spanish ships. Canary Islands Special Register allows a 90% corporate tax exemption and a 50% income tax exemption for crews, for example, among other benefits.
4
Pabus_Alt Mar 26, 2026 +21
>Last year, the Spanish-flagged merchant shipping fleet reached its lowest level in two decades. At present, it is comprised of 91 vessels, of which six are oil tankers and 13 are gas carriers, according to the latest report published by the Spanish Shipowners' Association as of June 2025. It seems to have at least "some"
21
Baerog Mar 26, 2026 +15
Of course it's true. /u/Airline_Lower just made up some bullshit without even looking into it and it's now the top comment because Listnook is dumb. Spain absolutely has had ships go through the Strait before, they're a relatively rich first world country. They have oil tankers and LNG carriers. And yes, they probably don't get supply from Iran, but this could be a great opportunity for them to do so. That's why Iran is doing this, they're trying to incentivize people to not side with the US in this conflict.

Didn't pretty much every non middle eastern, non Ukraine or Russia, country already more or less say "we don't want to touch that with a 10 foot pole".
28
kelldricked Mar 26, 2026 +58
Not to the US. To the rest of the world. That if you dont actively help the US (by giving them acces to bomb Iran or to help them refuel their planes/ships) than Iran doesnt have the time, resources or motivation to pick a fight with you. And thats a pretty smart plan. Because if they can convince enough people to might hold on long enough to the point in which the US regime cant continue this war for political reasons. Even among MAGA this war is hugely unpopular. If Iran can force the US to make a somewhat decent peacedeal with them. Or force US troops on the ground and inflict some casualties than that would cause a lot of problems for Trump.
58
ZumboPrime Mar 26, 2026 +9
Pray tell exactly *why* the fascists running the USA that started the war would care whether or not the war is unpopular? As long as Trump is alive, MAGA will fall in line, regardless whether or not they want it to continue. The GOP politicians have already made it *very* clear, sometimes *explicitly* such as Lindsay Graham, that they do not represent the interests USA. The GOP controls the entire US government, and as such they are the only ones that can hold themselves accountable. Given the cult behaviour of the entire Republican party, holding each other accountable is something they have never done in my entire lifetime and I expect never will.
9
xynith116 Mar 26, 2026 +19

AsinineAntimony312 Mar 26, 2026 +60

4
kaisadilla_0x1 Mar 26, 2026 +20
Might have to do with the fact that Spain doesn't really import much from the Middle East, and Qatar's LNG infrastructure, which is the only thing we need, is no longer operative. This is a propaganda move by Iran. They are taking Spain's position of "this war is pointless and we don't want anything to do with it" and selling it as some sort of support for the Iranian regime, which it isn't. The only reason Spain isn't implicitly supporting this war is because Donald Trump has antagonized Europe so hard that we cannot afford to now help him in his delusions. If this happened under Biden, you can be sure Spain would've provided everything the US needed for the war.

Have to give it to Iran, they know how to troll

dutchmasterams Mar 26, 2026 +115
Can’t remember the last time I saw a ULCC or VLCC flying the Spanish flag lol
115
JeffSergeant Mar 26, 2026 +74
The VLCC 'NO HABLO INGLESA' will be flying it as soon as they can find enough yellow paint
74
Particular_Trade6308 Mar 26, 2026 +16
"NO HABLO INGLES" would be the correct Spanish
16
Mechasteel Mar 26, 2026 +16
Pretty sure they were going for the obviously fake Spanish.

Every man for himself, that's what MAGA wants right?

Puzzleheaded-Wait470 Mar 26, 2026 +198
At this point Iran is just rage baiting us
198
A-Capybara Mar 26, 2026 +147
They're rage baiting Trump
147
Ire-Works Mar 26, 2026 +23
They're not rage baiting me. I don't know who you're talking about but 60% of the country disapproves of Trump and the job he's doing. I suspect the stats on the war are even worse for Trump. If anything this is directly at one little man and his terrible negotiation skills.
23
compatrini Mar 26, 2026 +11
By the end of his first term his approval rate was around 34% and people still vpted for him again
11
drleondarkholer Mar 26, 2026 +4
Is that 60% before or after the war? Anyways, over time they're probably going to get even more unpopular, both the war and Trump.

bad_syntax Mar 26, 2026 +24
Time for oil tankers to reflag to Spain. Be funny if the straight of Hormuz is only closed off to those countries supporting the USA, and everybody else is waved on by. Not funny for my stocks though :(
24
Amish_guy_with_WiFi Mar 26, 2026 +4
Do any big boats fly the American flag? I know all the cruise ships don't register their boats under the US because then they wouldn't be allowed to do as much awful shit.
4
chrisr3240 Mar 26, 2026 +27
The could really troll Trump by allowing all European tankers through
27
ChatamKay Mar 26, 2026 +178
Message sent to the world.

Sir_roger_rabbit Mar 26, 2026 +62
You can use the straight for free if you got no ships that want to use it. PR stunt
62
RetardedRedditRetort Mar 26, 2026 +30
I'm not saying it's not a PR stunt. But many Spanish companies own oil tankers. (e.g. Repsol, CLH, MArflet Marine, Transmediterranea, Vallehermoso, Naviera Murueta, Gestamp, etc.). So saying they have no ships that want to use it may not be accurate. Source: Repsol affiliate.

nutmegtester Mar 26, 2026 +3
They can obviously pay somebody else to take their normal routes and carry Straight traffic for a much higher price if they want to. It is a real (although dangerous) opportunity.

Cleanbriefs Mar 26, 2026 +9
Iran’s tollbooth business thanks to Trump! Unlimited income!
9
melowdout Mar 26, 2026 +5
This is next level trolling by the government of Iran. No, seriously, there has to be a bunch of middle schoolers running portions of their government. This is exactly the kind of stuff that would bother MAGA.
5
Fomentatore Mar 26, 2026 +14
Iran should allow NATO countries except for the US to use the straight as long as they stay neutral. Just for laughs.
14
DragonfruitGrand5683 Mar 26, 2026 +47
These Spanish guys look friendly Opens history book
47
physedka Mar 26, 2026 +24
Spain regrets staying out of the middle east hegemony game and now's their chance to reestablish the empire!
24
mothzilla Mar 26, 2026 +8
I heard they have quite the Armada.
8
TauCabalander Mar 26, 2026 +2
Suddenly a lot of re-flagged Spanish ships
2
primus202 Mar 26, 2026 +4
Just further evidence of why Iran will never give up their current position. As long as they can cut of Hormuz they have little reason to compromise.
4
Lukn Mar 26, 2026 +3
Aren't these ships the legends of just runninh whatever flag is cheapest to run? Every ship will be Spanish next week.
3
Magnatross Mar 27, 2026 +6
Every ship tomorrow: "como estas amigo"

Spain just out here catching strays. Like... The good kind of strays.
3
Capital_Elderberry28 Mar 26, 2026 +37
Betcha Spain really regrets not following the orange turd 💩 into an unjust war orchestrated by Netanyahu.
37
blackcain Mar 27, 2026 +8
When spain said they wouldn't allow the U.S. to launch attacks from their country Iran awarded them. Clever. That means anybody else who doesn't help the U.S> doesn't get a toll. haha!
8
ThroawayJimilyJones Mar 27, 2026 +3
Well I expect the rest of Europe to get it soon then. Cause the mood is clearly not on helping Donny
3
GuitarGeezer Mar 26, 2026 +7
After the breathless macho circle jerks of Hegseth and Trump demanding warcrimes and bragging while simultaneously whining about Iran fighting back as effectively as they can, this is a masterclass in Iran trolling the childlike if dangerous Trump. Remember the Star Trek being with the Napoleon complex that turned out to be an alien child playing with toys and shapeshifting? That’s Drumpf. Eternally a petulant and destructive child and apologies to children for saying that.

>His stance has won him few supporters in Washington with President Trump claiming that Spain was a "loser" and he would take action against them. So are we going to attack Spain now, after Cuba or are we circling back to Greenland first? I'm curious which country Trump felt like targeting today.
6
SleepyLabrador Mar 26, 2026 +7
Iran should pander to the Europeans. Then they can anger Trump and then get the Europeans to open up for trade with their regime.
