Destroying an entire family for the 'crime' of protesting shows exactly how terrified this regime is of its own people.

Every authoritarian regime is terrified of its people. So, they make sure the people are also terrified of them. Excessive punishments for the most minor "offence" really helps control how many people are willing to take a stand. And as long as there's not many taking a stand they remain in control.

...the "crime" is of killing a law enforcement official, though?
I'm not suggesting that they are guilty, or that death would be a reasonable penalty for whatever they are alleged to have done. But it's literally not executing for protest

Nearly my entire family is in Iran still and it is hard to express how bad it is and how in the dark they all feel.
Keep in mind the internet is still down now going on two months with the exception of a small number of regime loyalists who are given special sim cards to be able to go online.
The phone works one way - they call me and I cannot call them. I try to give them updates when I can

Genuine question, how does your family feel about what the U.S. has done/is doing? I feel like we hear from people who hate trump, hate America, or hate high gas/energy costs but we don’t hear from people on the ground in Iran because of the blackout and fear of retaliation from the IRGC. If you don’t feel comfortable answering I completely understand. Thanks and prayers up to your family!

Most hate IRGC, only ones who support them are hardline Muslims and actual supporters of the regime.

Indeed, apparently USA (Trump, mainly) have no plans at all, just playing with the people lives around the whole world.
And, of course, getting richer in the meantime...

I feel bad for the people of Iran. Americans crying about gas prices, rallying in the streets for whatever political reason that fits their agenda, yet are quiet when it comes to real opposition like the people of Iran are facing.

Anyone who thinks Trump is a dictator or a "king" has no clue how real autocracies function. They only respect power and weild it without remorse.
7
spin_kick17 hr ago

They can both be. On a spectrum, he's one of the most authoritarian US presidents there's ever been.

The fact that we haven’t hit full autocracy doesn’t mean we aren’t on the downward slide to that happening. See also: executing Americans in the streets, finding ways to tamper with the midterm elections through voter suppression and redistricting, and covering every available White House surface in gold. Don’t be willfully ignorant.

I don't think anyone is claiming he *currently* is a dictator. I think people are claiming he's trying to *become* one, and has made better headway than predicted.
Transition from democracy to dictatorships doesn't happen overnight. Historically it has occurred by systematic weakening of democracy over time. Trump has repeatedly made power grabs; they've been resisted. Many of those power grabs have been successful and have revealed weaknesses in our democracies.
Still others have been foiled. If they hadn't been foiled, he would have been very close to dictatorship. What if January 6th had been successful, and Trump had overturned the results of a democratic election? He would have been a dictator.
Fortunately I think Trump is too old and infirm to successfully finish this as a dictator. However, he has paved the way for future dictators by pushing the boundaries of what an American president can get away with. The fact he fomented an insurrection and got away with it only to be re-elected is hair-raising. He was impeached and convicted of a crime but still currently president. This parallel's Hitler's arrest and imprisonment in 1924. The system in Germany was working but then fell in 9 years! Clearly the system is not as robust to wannabe dictators as we perhaps once thought.

One of the things you learn when you know how real autocracies function is that you definitely don’t want to let things slide that direction just because they’re not that bad yet.

The father has been accused of “collaborating with Israel and killing a law enforcement officer” during the protests in Malard.
Just quoting the article. If true, Is this something that deserves the death penalty in Iran?
-3

The “if true” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in your post. Every time the Islamic Republic sentences a protester to death, they accuse them of murdering a police officer.

Same article:
> Sources told Iran International that both detainees were subjected to severe pressure and torture during interrogations. They have also been denied access to legal representation at all stages of the judicial process, including interrogation, prosecution, trial, and review by the Supreme Court.

We can't police the world.
If we really wanted to help the people of Iran we would have helped overthrow the government after the Ayatolla died. Not bombed the shit out of them and murdered school girls.
-26
gayphilantropist21 hr ago

The world will always be policed. Who do you want to be the police? China? Russia?
As tragic as the school bombing accident was, it's a grain of sand in the desert compared to what Iran does to its citizens.

> it's a grain of sand in the desert compared to what Iran does to its citizens.
For 50 years the government has been telling them American is the "Great Satan." The younger generation was finally waking up and less anti America. All they needed was "something." That "something" was going to be 84 year old Ayatolla dying from cancer.
We could have used that moment to help and inspire the people.
Instead we bombed the f*** out of them and those "grands of sands" were their sisters and daughters, and they now f****** hate us and believe what they were told all those years.
We have made it 10x worse for them and US.

The vast majority of Iranians never subscribed to the “death to America” bullshit. There hasn’t been some kind of recent awakening.
And it’s honestly demeaning how you seem to think Iranians are ignorant simpletons who are so easily swayed.
