Iran has a new demand to end the war – and it could bring in billions | CNN
When an Iranian official this week laid out a list of demands to end the war started by the United States and Israel, he added an item that hadn’t been on Tehran’s list before: recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

So what' the Trump era equivalent of "Thanks, Obama"? Because helping Iran test the proof of concept over how much power they have to disrupt the global economy by launching a poorly conceived war against them with no apparent plan to counter that concept - despite it being one of the most obvious weapons available to Iran - really feels like it should be earning Trump a special level of derision.

That, and they’re trying to bring the apocalypse/rapture. And also it’s nice if everyone is broke and selling assets to survive - the “investor” (parasite) class likes c**** assets.

Still remember his giant f\*kup with the 2020 Taliban deal. Trump gave them everything without any guarantees, without even involving the current Afghan govt officials. He just pushed it through so he could tout it as a peace achievement in his final year.

You joke but a right wing talking point around this war is that Trump had to start a war with Iran because Obama and Biden let the situation get so out of control and only Trump was brave enough to do something.

I was thinking exactly the same, they never had a reason to risk testing it out but now they've been backed into a nothing to lose situation they found out they *can* actually hold the straight to ransom. Would have been a lot better if they'd never had a reason to test that hypothesis. Trump truly is the dumbest bellend elected to office

Frank pulled a Bradbury and insisted CHOAM was OPEC but water was the oil, not spice. His 'special interest' in botany and de-desertification engineering was a strange organism to breed with his prototype story focusing more conventionally on the nature of the spice drug addiction and planetary politics as dress-up of the conduct of nation states. I suspect his real appeal to the flower children of mind-expanding experiences was his own dabbling in peyote and the translation of his hallucinogenic drug trip into the description of Paul's experience with the spice and the nature of higher consciousness. With this framing it becomes clear why he would prefer water and its scarcity-driving human development as the equivalent to geopolitical "oil", though it's a strange marriage.

Exactly! I hope Americans don’t actually believe anything trump says
1
tdmonkey Mar 29, 2026 +1
I don’t think any significant amount of people believe trump anymore, but that doesn’t really mean much. Trump gives a very hateful portion of many Americans an outlet. He gives people that feel slighted someone to blame, and don’t underestimate how far saying “it’s not your fault, it’s X’s fault” will go in a country where we are raised to believe we can all become rich and powerful if we just put in the effort. He’s an expert con man, and although to a more educated person it’s obvious he’s playing fast and loose with everything, to his fans, he’s attacking the ones that are keeping them “not rich”. “Never underestimate the power in of denial” especially when someone offers to blame someone else for you.

The sad part is that "the left" actually did a lot of research and reporting trying to understand MAGA voters. If you think back to the first term, there was endless reporting on MAGA and what they were actually about...and it basically turned up QAnon and anti-everything that wasn't them. The end result was that MAGA doesn't take Tr seriously. They care more about what their opposition is against than what they are supposed to be for. Internet and Meme culture played a huge role in all of this. Guys on the internet can be extremely mean and outright evil and just look at what they do as a joke and those who don't "get it" are just not in the in-crowd. We took that behavior and psychology and directly applied it in governance like DOGE and Project 2025.

The whole 'they CAN'T do that, it's ILLEGAL' argument doesn't really hold much ground to me when we're out there doing stuff like drone striking elementary schools and timing out the strikes for optimal damage
1
Zogtee Mar 29, 2026 +1
Again, I want to point out that none of this, none of it, was a problem until a couple of weeks ago, when Israel and the US suddenly started attacking Iran. Before that, things worked fine. Now we're looking at worldwide disruptions, broken alliances, loss of life, loss of infrastructure, etc, that will take years to recover from. What Trump and his administration have done is a massive and ongoing warcrime that will have consequences for all of us.
1
SilverhawkPX45 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Yes, looking at this from the Iranian perspective, the US has unilaterally ripped up the nuclear deal to fabricate a reason to assault Iran. They literally had the right to send inspectors to the Iranian nuclear facilities to assess if they were building nuclear weapons. Instead they are bombing energy infrastructure. Now they've created a self-fulfilling prophecy, because they've demonstrated time and time again (with Ukraine and now Iran) that the only deterrent that works is nuclear weaponry. Security guarantees are worthless.
1
RPtheFP Mar 29, 2026 +1
Any country that finds itself in the crosshairs of America should be pursuing nuclear weapons at all costs. They only need to look at the differences between Libya and North Korea.
1
TheAnswerIsBeans Mar 29, 2026 +1
The difference is more that Libya and Iran have oil and don’t have china as a protector.
1
TheJulio89 Mar 29, 2026 +1
The US is a terrorist state. If any other country did to the US what the US did to Iran, the citizens would be screaming terrorism and demanding the government bomb them to hell and back. I remember the sentiment after the 9-11 attacks and how everyone was wanting constant carpet bombing of any -stan country. It's astounding to me how the US citizens don't see how their government is nothing but terrorists disguised as patriots.
1
AaDware Mar 29, 2026 +1
Dont forget that after causing all this chaos and destruction, trump is "bored of it now" and wants to move on and wash his hands of it.
1
Paaskonijn Mar 29, 2026 +1
Sorry but I think it is dishonest to say Israel and the US 'suddenly' attacked Iran, when Iras has been baiting it with their "death to America, death to Israel" chants, their Israel destruction doomsday clock and their continued support for terrorist groups.

Agree. The Trump administration clearly did not do its homework and instead of making things better, the US helped Iran find a leverage they can use, and Iran will lean toward and heavily on that leverage. So Trump Administration has made things worse for itself and for US population.

Actually - thanks to the Crime-Twins attack - I believe military depletion, economic devastation, and "Regime Change" will occur in Israel and USA LONG BEFORE it ever does in Iran!
1
evanliko Mar 29, 2026 +1
Oh yeah no i meant. Like. Iran gets money from controlling the straight. Not iran gets a regime change. Haha I certainly hope we see a "regime change" in israel and the us soon...
1
XSinTrick6666 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I hear ya - I was echo-ing your comment, but thinking that the 'win' may go further, i.e. Iran will get the spoils US & IL tried to get from Iran instead. Actually they may have stumbled on a way to circumvent US sanctions forever - by charging Strait passage fees per tanker, maybe even sliding scale "friend" or "foe" - like trump tried to do w tariffs.
1
evanliko Mar 29, 2026 +1
Yep. Theres literally no reason for them not to charge different countries companies different amounts. And theres not really anything anyone can do about it because clearly, starting a war with iran, makes everything worse. Iran is the one with the power here really. The US cannot actually take over iran via invasion, no matter what the stupid president thinks.

It also gives Iran the opportunity to see exactly how much leverage they actually have on the world with the strait of Hormuz. The world gets to see it as well. This is going to have severe long term implications in the geopolitics of the Middle East and the world at large.
1
Ecstatic-Plantain234 Mar 29, 2026 +1
It's baffling. All Trump ever does are illegal things. I mean, he literally tried to overthrow the American government on January 6 and he got away with it. Nothing is stopping him from pulling that trick again after the midterms. People still seem to believe that they can vote him out. You will need to smoke him out. And please bring an exorcist too.

“Iran has long threatened to close the strait in case of an attack, but few expected it to follow through – or for it to prove so effective in disrupting global trade flows.” Few expected it would follow through and disrupt the economy? Sure, CNN.
1
iDontSow Mar 29, 2026 +1
The expectation wasn’t that Iran would not close the Strait, it’s that doing so would be self-destructive. A prolonged closure would spike global energy prices, disrupt trade, and hurt not just the U.S. and Gulf states, but also Iran’s own economy and key partners like China and Russia. In other words, the closure is bad for everyone, not just the US. That’s why Iran has historically used the threat of closing the Strait as leverage rather than actually following through. It’s a high-cost escalation. It’s basically their nuclear option. The fact that they actually did it just means that they think the political cost to the Trump administration will rise faster than the cost to their own economy. It’s a very risky bet.
1
Ok-Topic-6095 Mar 29, 2026 +1

It was israels attack and america had to go with it as its ally and stand on its side, its not like they wanted that in hindsight. Now that its gotten loose in the whole region they cant really pull out either anymore, eventhough they tried, but israel wouldnt let them by attacking further. And at this point of time iran doesnt believe anything anymore the two are blabbering about 🤷
1

1
getmevodka Mar 29, 2026 +1
Idc. What i meant is that the us had no choice as to further go into talks since the decision to attack was already made by israel. Doesnt mean they had to strike too, only that further talks were taken off the table by that. And in the end they did attack together with israel, because what were they supposed to do else in that situation. I believe it wasnt as clear as now, that this would develop in the current catastrophy back then, eventhough attacking too wasnt the brigthest move in history. And if im getting dislikes for that, it only shows that people dont like reality, or at least how i have seen it 😅👍

Trump did. He didnt even consult congress about it, as far as we get infos here in europe. Heck we still dont know why they started blasting at iran, while they were on the way to make progress and to end this before it gets ugly. Did you get any credible causes up until now why the us is burning billions a day down there ? Iran just wants to bring pain to the finances of the usa rn. They know they cant destroy them. But if it gets too expensive they may well be able to drive them out of all their bases in the middle east. Please. Explain to me if you have any better intel.

1
getmevodka Mar 29, 2026 +1
Yeah because he doesnt grasp the problematic interchained situations in the middle east region. He figured it was another venezuela type move. Whole pentagon told him dont dont dont do this. And hegseth and he both said 🤷 we will do it anyways. And now that the hornets nest is stirred up you can possibly only end this very quick if you do sth about israel, which is their ally, and so they cant. And so they are trapped and need to do all they can. They can be happy if this isnt the end of americas world dominating position. They wont get weak, sure, but who tf thought it was a great idea to kill off 20-30% of world trade and energy half a world away and expect it to not come back at em at some point. I cant fathom the resilience against hundreds of people that tell you to not do a thing, that that takes. ☠️

On one hand I think why shouldn’t Iran charge, and on the other hand, we’re increasing their power and leverage even more over that area…and it’ll certainly drive up prices even more. I’m conflicted. The orange man has helped the Iranians realise an opportunity 🤦‍♀️

Almost like it was not a good idea to go "special operation"-ing then to begin with...

😂 that would’ve been a good idea to start with!

If you think about it, before the war, Strait was open, during the war is still open, to friendly countries. If USA loses this war, and they are heading towards it, they will be finished globally. Trump took the bait and it was set out by... China and Russia. Probably Mossad are now trying to scrap what they can and move on but the USA on the other hand, is the one who will come as the donkey that got fooled by multiple sides. I also want to point out this fact, Putin is not Trump's friend or stooge and same the other way around. I do not know what they talked in Anchorage but for sure they didn't talked about Venezuela, Cuba or Iran so that deal is already a failure. Doesn't help the fact that Kushner and Witkoff probably said who the Russian negotiators are and gave the info to Ukraine and the Ukraine sought to assassinate them, failed. Similar memo to how Mossad operates by the way.

It's a type of war reparations that the entire world ends up paying.
1
Smooth-Ad5257 Mar 29, 2026 +1
that is just dreaming. Imagine, the orange man has helped the American people to realize what true freedom and democracy is! Much much lower bar in an "open" environment , yet the orange man would still be voted by millions! It's called brainwashed folks, there is no reverse with an "opportunity". It requires decades of education and a Nürnberg Kind of trail where people are judge for crimes against humanity ...

So turns out Iran letting 10 ships through was proof they could control the militias. I understand now why it was so exciting for the Trump administration to see the proof, now trump Putin and Iran can charge bullshit fees

I hate CNN so much. Everyone knew they would close the strait. Thats why the US didnt attack them despite Israel wanting this war for decades.

While what Iran is proposing might be illegal under international laws, perhaps more concerning, and needing of more exposure and condemnation, are the mass violations and humanitarian crimes being conducted by both the U.S. and Israel in the Middle East! Not only that, you only have to look at the discriminative and punitive laws that are being imposed within the U.S. itself to see that Trump and his cohorts have absolutely no respect for anyone, or anything, but themselves. Tolls on the Strait of Hormuz are minor issues by comparison.

The price of diesel has doubled in Australia over the past few weeks. Iran wants to charge a toll of $1/barrel - seems like a reasonable deal for oil to drop back below $70
1
BasicCaptainn Mar 29, 2026 +1
Let’s call this what it is: a pay-to-play peace deal. Iran knows that the global economy is hurting from shipping disruptions and high energy prices. By demanding "billions" to "end the war," they are essentially putting a price tag on stability. The problem is that once you pay a country to stop being aggressive, you’ve just proven that aggression is a profitable business model.
1
Theidiotgenius718 Mar 29, 2026 +1
But USA started this aggression by sabotage and attacking during peace talks.  It’s hard to see how you get to paying a country to stop being aggressive when they didn’t start this one, we did
1
P5B-DE Mar 29, 2026 +1
It's the US who is the aggressor
1
Grumpy_001 Mar 29, 2026 +1
And Israel

Because who's going to stop them? They've demonstrated the ability to control shipping traffic through Shitler's illegal war. Why would they relinquish rights something to which they have effective right?

Rubio says it's important to have a plan. Guess we couldn't have come up with a plan BEFORE we started this war?

Rubio ranting about "illegal" actions is ironic

>Iran has long threatened to close the strait in case of an attack, but few expected it to follow through – or for it to prove so effective in disrupting global trade flows. That's either a "strait"-up lie or there are nothing but idiots at CNN.

Not a smart move by Iran. If there was one way to unify the world against them, this is it.

> US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Friday that one of the immediate challenges following the war would be Tehran’s attempts to establish a tolling system at Hormuz. “Not only is this illegal, it’s unacceptable, it’s dangerous to the world, and it’s important that the world have a plan to confront it,” Rubio said So the USA started an illegal war and now whines about a potential "illegal" response to being attacked and wants the world to have a plan? Those size 14 shoes must be affecting his brain. The US has spent the last 13 months shitting on every "ally" it ever had and threatening some with invasion, minimizing their help when the US was attacked and NOW they want our help. Don't make me laugh. Lil' Marco needs to come up for air more often.

I remember the United States claiming the Panama canal and now, the straight for Iran is a bad idea. No

I got an idea. Build a canal through the tip of Oman.

Through the mountains?
1
wdwhereicome2015 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Yeah will just be like the Mont Blanc tunnel but with water rather than tarmac and boats rather than cars. Or the lesser known Standedge Canal tunnel that goes through Peak District. But will be on a larger scale (super tankers can’t fit through the canal tunnel) /s for those unsure

If they stop arming proxies all over the middle east and swear to respect the peace of all their neighbors I'd let them have this. If.

Israel or Iran?
1
Grumpy_001 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Great question
1
PeopleB4Profit Mar 29, 2026 +1
The Tribe of Israel was driven out of the Middle East millennia ago. Israel sad to say does not belong there and the gov of Israel is not the ally to the American People. They are allied with corrupt American Wealth and ARMS and have no problem killing American Citizens! Am I the only one that thinks many of the 300+ Nuclear Warheads we gave them are pointed at the USA? What is Sharia Law? a) Having Muslim neighbors in America.......... b) An Islamic Community Center downtown c) Seeing US Army Helicopter Gunships killing your neighbors to steal your nation's resources for American Oil Companies. Christians in America should be more afraid of leaving their children with a pastor than anything found in the aspects of Sharia Law. Religion is Religion and is designed to control and harm God's People. (We are all God's people)

What are Israel's proxies in the middle-east?
1

Yes. Can you answer it?

Nah I'll let you dig yourself out from under the rock you've been living under these past few weeks.

Starting to realize you don't know what proxy means.
1
areyoualocal Mar 29, 2026 +1
equally by you not knowing what a proxy *does*. As I said, these past few weeks have made it blatantly obvious.

[There you go.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran%E2%80%93Israel_proxy_conflict). There are 3 proxies recognized in the war against Iran since 1985 And with the US admitting twice they've been forced into a war against Iran (last year and now), I presume OP is counting them as a proxy. It does not meet the proxy definition though as Israel is fighting alongside them. Now it will be worth going through the forenscics of the drones falling on the US - Israeli side, to see how they make their weapons. For example in the russian war against ukraine, at some point 95% of the drone components were made in china, which does make Russia a Chinese proxy to some extend. Currently, Iran is benefitting from Russian and Chinese intelligence. We will see how they support Iran on the long term, but there is the real possibility Iran would become a Chinese proxy (while Russia will help, I doubt they have as much capacity since they're fighting their own war).
