Which religious fundamentalist government started the war that led to all this? The Iranian regimes goal is survival. They had no appetite for war. They were near collapse internally. The airstrikes that kill indiscriminately caused the rally around the flag effect. Persians all over the world had one day to celebrate the death of Khomeini only to wake up news of their children dying and the sky now raining oil.
What US and Israel didn't count on was that Iran had 40 years to prepare for this attack. They had contingencies to make the war painful, costly, and not worth it. Thinking that the whole regime would collapse after a few surgical strikes is ridiculous. You need boots on the ground for regime change.

So will we need boots on the ground for a Whitehouse Regime Change ..

The US is above the law.

There are problems with half-assed interventions, but not in the way you’ve describe.
> caused the rally around the flag effect.
Yeah no. After killing and imprisoning tens of thousands across the country and putting the economy in a state of collapse, there’s really no way back for the regime.
Not that this immediately matters. If the protest repressions have revealed anything, it’s that a modern totalitarian police state can maintain control for the time being against the fundamental dissent of the vast majority of its populace so long as it retains a loyal hardline cadre that holds a monopoly on violence. As the protests have shown, even just a couple of men with AK’s and several magazines can easily tear through a mass of unarmed civilians.
The strikes are far more detrimental to the regime’s survival and ability to hang onto power than you’re making it out to be. More importantly than killing Khamenei, they’ve wiped out the near entirety of the operational high command and upper leadership, and much of Iran’s most advanced military capabilities. In all likelihood, the regime’s gradual demise has been hastened.
The problem though is that a true victory for the US in this scenario requires more than significant degradation but complete collapse. Even having taken devastating losses, it takes very little for Iran to put the Strait of Hormuz in standstill, and anything short of immediate collapse gives them plenty of temporal leverage to do so.

The regime doesn’t matter. The enemy being a foreign country killing their people doesn’t require any other reason to support kicking out said foreign meddlers.

You’re speaking along the axis of normative geopolitical morality, which is orthogonal to the axis of strategy topical to this thread.

WE ARE GOING TO BOMB YOU UNTIL YOU START DOING WHAT YOU WERE DOING BEFORE WE STARTED BOMBING YOU! ...!! YEAH!!
At this point I am bothered less by the abject stupidity coming out of this administration at every turn, and more by the complicity of soooooo many media people. I get the daily beast, et al, bots raining down c*** on social sites in order to do something that I bet even they cannot articulate. But all of the rest of the media that still has humans involved, how are all of you so f****** deep into this shit? How do you ask the most incredibly stupid questions with an earnest expression as if the admin "official" will provide any real or true information? How the f*** do you do this?

TL;DC: Their job is to be "stupid" and give the appearance of an institution holding politicians to account while note actually doing so. And that left-right corporate media are usually just centre to right wing in practice and exist to be political theatre.
All this admin is doing differently is they just reject using that method of control and resort to older fear based methods.

There is going to be a famine starting about a year from now, with food prices shooting up about 7 months from now.
About half of the world exists because of synthetic fertilizer, a ton of which comes from sulfur, and more importantly, urea. Urea is a byproduct of LNG production, which has been stopped/slowed and is not being transported as well in the Strait. All things are connected together, everything needs to work in tandem to run well. There are no urea stockpiles at, there are no fertilizer stockpiles like that. It’s March 15th. It’s almost time to plant. Even if we started back up tomorrow, and stared back up all
LNG tomorrow, we cannot get urea and fertilizer moving for two weeks after the Strait opens.
Right now about 1/3rd of the world’s fertilizer trade is being cut off. This is something to actually panic about.

Iran like other major Countries has Nuclear Scientists who need enriched uranium for research etc & not just researching the possibility of cold fusion. The World KNOWS Iran has no nuclear weaponry, in fact its illegal in Iranian law.
Iran considers Nuclear Weaponry Immoral.

Well maybe Iran should just re-enter negotiations for them to be attacked for the third time ..
Anyway why the double standards, why dont the IAEA enter nuclear facilities in the US to find out if they have nuclear weapons or not & if they have then what?
The truth of course will come out that theres no Iranian nuclear weaponry after the war but we already know the truth.
The US is above the law & international courts ..

Turns out none of this was necessary. Trump was well informed of the risks. And made the decision to bet the ranch on a longshot anyway.
> Caine said in several briefings that U.S. officials had long believed Iran would deploy mines, drones and missiles to close the world’s most vital shipping lane, according to people with knowledge of the discussions.
> Trump acknowledged the risk, these people said, but moved forward with the most consequential foreign-policy decision of his two presidencies. He told his team that Tehran would likely capitulate before closing the strait—and even if Iran tried, the U.S. military could handle it.

The truth is, he knows how much an energy crisis would aid his dear friend Vladimir Putin. These two would march into hell for one another. Any side effects of their actions means absolutely nothing to them.

We’re all asking what’s the end game, how do we end this war. That’s the problem America has no problem starting the war, it’s ending it that’s the problem. If Iran totally collapses, are we willing to occupy Kharg Island in perpetuity. If Somalian pirates threaten ships on their coast and Somalia is a failed state, what about the Strait of Hormuz? Iran was never a threat to the United States, we’ve more deaths by mass shootings every year than have been killed by Iran in 47 years. What about the IED’s? Those deaths are the result of our incursions into conflicts we’ve begun, that also cause deaths.
