It’s incredible how Trump, contrary to what he claims, plays all his cards too early. Take Ukraine, for example. To force it to back down and accept a ‘truce’ (i.e. ceding territory to an invader unable to conquer it), he cut off direct arms supplies and funding altogether. A skilled politician would have done the opposite: flooded Ukraine with money and weapons, allowed it to gain ground (and thus declare itself satisfied and victorious), and only then forced it into an agreement by threatening to cut off funding and arms supplies. Instead, Trump used his strongest leverage right at the start and now, in effect, has no leverage left. The same with Iran.

Trump always goes with the nuclear option first. No doubt he wants one dropped on Iran and people are holding him back.

He has spent tbe last 10 years surrounding himself with yes-men and an infatuated cult. He has always been in his rich person world but now he is completely in his own reality. He sees himself as godlike because he makes sure the only people around him treat him like a god. So he literally no longer can comprehend why any choice he makes is not instantly a success.

He's used to bullying his way to what he wants. He's never been told no in his entire life. So strong arming first is his play. He just ran into an opponent who can't be bullied like he wants so now he's floundering.

You should read some books about Trump's businesses because he always does this. Every negotiation starts out with the most confrontational, beligerent way he can, he keeps up the fight until he runs out of moves, then folds for a worse deal than the opener he started the fight over, and then claims victory. Every time he fights beligerently and loses

Fluffy-Republic8610 3 days ago +2
Great insight. And I think anyone can see that the skill he lacks is restraint. He's obviously getting this kind of advice from all his experts but chooses to overrule them.

Because Trump and his supporters claim he is actually a f****** terrible businessman. Literally every single company he started has gone down the drain and loss money. The mother f****** bankrupted a c***** multiple times. He also probably would have bankrupted his dad's company he inherited if not for dirty Russian money in the 90s.

He said last night that “the whole world is basically a c*****” so I guess he’s looking to bankrupt it like he did his actual casinos.

The problem is that the US (both Trump and Biden) doesn’t want Ukraine to win, they want Ukraine to be at war with Russia for as long as possible. They want to sustain them just enough so the fighting continues but not enough that they get a resolution.

*“Mariners are not soldiers. They are civilians who are piloting vessels, who are managing global trade. They should not be caught in a situation like this.”* This coming from the same regime that’s killed over 150 people from extra-judiciously blowing fishing boats out of the water without due process…? lol. Lmfao, even.

Yeah, I'm not sure I agree with US attacks on those boats, but they were definitely not fishing boats.

If only we had a way to make sure. Like maybe, what if instead of double tapping a boat with tomahawk missiles we instead intercepted it and captured the people on board.

They know tvat midterms are bust. Now it’s a matter of holding ground until Democrats inevitably get the house and the senate. Then it’ll be: “all was fine until Dems”
32
Educational_Report_9 3 days ago +10
Now Trump admin only option is to keep the war going until midterms. They will escalate it right before midterms and declare elections can’t be held at a time of war.
10

They've been doing shit they "Couldn't" do for years now. And you absolutely know some states will comply with his bullshit, so even if we do have elections, we won't have 50 states participating in them. Great way to see which states should be cutoff from federal funding - every state that refuses to participate in the vote can go ahead and do so, they'll be treated like any other voter that decided not to vote. Get your cardio up. These Nazis aren't going anywhere on their own.

The difference between five years ago to today is that our president today is driving the price up with his little foreign influenced vendetta. Five years ago it was due to a demand surge when the world opened back up and when we had supply shortages due to Russian sanctions…. One is demand. The other is manufactered

>*The leader called for a “new regional and global order under the strategy of a strong Iran” where there would be no place for foreigners “and their mischief.” He specifically pointed to “using the leverage of closing the strait” as one way to achieve that vision.* The Hormuz story changes daily, but if the above is true, we have the war to thank, because by killing off Iran's leadership, a more unbending set of rulers has arisen.
65
Theduckisback 3 days ago +55
The war, and also the long pattern of behaviors that led to it. Ripping up the JCPOA, killing Sulemani during Trump 1. Tighter sanctions during Covid that de facto kept medical equipment out, the killing of their negotiators, the 12 day war last year, etc. Like or hate the government of Iran, the US under Trump has been far from a good faith partner in negotiations to this point, and getting struck and having their supreme leader and his family killed and wounded made them turn to the "break glass in case of emergency" option.
55
Acceptable_Bat379 3 days ago +29
Yup. And trump's willingness and proven past of assassinating people after luring them with negotiations makes it damn hard to have good faith talks

The Art of the Deal strikes again. I am not an “enemy of my enemy is my friend type,” but seeing Trump so humiliated is wonderful. I look forward to going back to unmixed hatred of the Iranian theocratic government in the next US administration. After we get rid of our current theocratic government.

I'm curious if they are going to partner with Saudi and box out UAE after they left OPEC. It's in Iran and Saudi Arabia's best interest to not let UAE flood the market with oil and they can easily stop them from being able to sell any oil.
3
HatchingCougar 3 days ago +4
The two countries (Saudi and Iran) pretty much hate each other.  Sunni vs Shia as well as being massive regional / geopolitical rivals, constantly trying to undermine each other in the region. So I doubt they’ll partner up to that extent
4
DTFlash 3 days ago +3
But UAE could be messing with their money and that makes strange bedfellows. Saudi and Iran are both in OPEC so it's not they have zero relationship when it comes to the oil market.
3
FlicksBus 3 days ago +2
Just a few years ago, relations between both were thawing. Expecting them to become friends is indeed a step too far, but the gulf states can often be ruthlessly pragmatic. I wouldn't exclude the possibility of some occasional partnership for mutual benefit, specially if both nations feel their existence threatened by a common enemy, like the UAE.
2
Fateor42 3 days ago +3
Iran has been attacking Saudia Arabia during this, the chances of them partnering up is functionally nill.

Help me out here (talk to me like I'm a child or a Golden Retriever). Why don't Oman and Dubai just say that you can transit the straight through our territorial waters? So, Iran's going to attack international shipping in Omani territorial waters?
1
FlicksBus 3 days ago +3
Iran has already targeted already targeted commercial ships in Omani and Emirati waters, and they launched sea mines. That being said, I would say that the main problem is that the passageway in Hormuz is actually quite small, specially for the volume of ships passing through. Before the war, there was one passageway come into the Gulf passing through Iranian waters, and another one leaving through Omani waters. Condensing everything into Omani waters would likely complicate the logistics of the traffic quite a lot.

Realistically Iran won't be holding control of the strait long term. The reason they can make these kinds of statements / claims now is because the entire rest of the world is pissed off with American actions or are directly benefiting from US military power degradation, and so while Iran is taking the actions to close the straight the responsibility for the closure is seen as being America's. If, however, tomorrow all the US forces upped and left then global opinion would shift to it being Iran that was exploiting the straight. The level of resistance this would generate around the world would mean there would be a global action to stop this happening. China and India are both quiet supporters of Iran, but a setup where Iran charges tolls would be against their national interests. Without them as customers for oil Iran would economically collapse.
0
goforbroke71 3 days ago +6
I think a lot countries would pay $1/barrel to go back to normal. It does set a bad precedent though. I could see Iran waiving their fee for each country dropping scantions and trading with them normally. That would piss off the USA, so might be a tougher path.
6
Harlequin80 3 days ago
Short term yes, long term no. None of the major powers will want to institutionalise rent seeking on natural waterways. China in particular is very very vulnerable to that.

I don't think he care how this war ends. He is to busy shorting the market and running the President grift for as much money as he can and after that gig is up he goes to the Gaza strip and runs The Board of Peace where he controls at least 21 countries at a billion dollars to be apart of the board. And each nation has promised troops to the board for Trump's personal army. The Board of Peace sits above The United Nations so he is the chairman of the world. This war is chump change compared to what Trump is and has built.
