So hold on… Is this an Iranian blockade, or an American blockade? Do they take alternate days? What the actual f*** is going on here?

Schrödingers blockade. Both Iran and the USA blockades
1
takesthebiscuit9 hr ago
It’s really very simple,
Iran removed the block for non USA affiliated vessels (subject to toll)
USA removed the block for non Iran vessels
Iran said we will lift the block if Iran vessels can pass
USA said the similar

The blockade by the USA is an act of war. Iranians are trying to protect ships in their waters from getting involved in their defense against this act of war.
-21
isaacfisher10 hr ago
+8
Wait what? Blockade is blockade, the straights are not Iranian waters
8
Scriefers9 hr ago
+2
You’re right! The established shipping channel is not in Iranian territorial waters, it is wholly within Omani territorial waters and has always been free (as it has to be) to travel through. But since the war Iran essentially seized control of the strait via threats, and is now diverting any traffic through their territorial waters. They are forcing ships under threats of attack to sail closely between two of their islands off Iran’s coast so that they can positively ID vessels, somehow arrange toll payment, and/or hold them under seizure.
2
Idiot_Savant_1310 hr ago
-1
They are if Iran can maintain a steady threat to anyone attempting to navigate it without permission.
The U.S. has blown up boats in international waters - while also targeting survivors illegally and bragging about it.
That cost the U.S. the moral authority to question anyone else doing anything like it.
-1
isaacfisher10 hr ago
+6
Putting US morality aside for a moment, what does it means “they are”? If I declare that I’m gonna blow up anyone that dare to cross the road the road become mine?

1

In a rule based society it does not. But international rules and laws get weakened everytime they get broken without any repercussions. The US did attack and sink various civilian ships in international waters killing their crew. That had zero repercussions. Now Iran is attacking other civilian ships in national waters which are protected by the UNCLOS right of innocent passage. We have entered an era where international law gets ignored by everyone who feels powerful enough to do so. And some of those are not only ignoring it but literally bragging about that fact. Why do you think should anyone still follow such laws when they become inconvenient?
1
Idiot_Savant_139 hr ago
Setting aside U.S. morality, or all morality? Just want to be clear if you're trying to set aside ethics, or stop comparing what Iran does to what the U.S. does because... that doesn't look good for the U.S.?
\[If I declare that I’m gonna blow up anyone that dare to cross the road the road become mine?\]
No. If you can & do start blowing up anyone that dares to cross the road, however, people are not going to cross that road.
If no one can stop you from blowing up those who cross the road, then regardless of what other people wrote down in other places, you're clearly in control of the road.
The morality that was set aside is what determines whether this is "okay" or not - and since the U.S. has been completely ignoring the international laws itself, no one is going to listen if the U.S. complains that Iran is violating international law.
Any questions?

The strait is Iranian water. At least half of it the other half is omanian waters. The passage through the strait was open because of the right of innocent passage defined in UNCLOS but that does not mean it suddenly becomes international waters it just means one is free to use it. But significantly Iran did never ratify that part of UNCLOS so it is questionable if they are actually subject to that part of international law.
Considering that Oman hosts US bases it effectively is part of undeclared US war against Iran. So even if Iran attacks ships in the Omanian side it would just be attacking civilian targets in a warzone. Which is of course bad but by far not the only or first attack against civilian targets in this war.
Blockading a nation in international waters on the other hand is without a question an act of war.

Strait open Friday in time for big market rally. Iran clarified stance post trading hours to say no actually it’s closed.
Surprisingly, no civilization ending tweets yet from Trump. He’s been more focused on “rigged election” stuff Saturday.
Regardless, that’s what stands out to me, Trump has largely kept his mouth shut. Must be hard on him.
Edit:
Could go either direction with that silence. Maybe negotiations, or maybe he’s fuming so hard he’s channeling it into a massive escalation effort.

They’ve been saying it. Then its open! Then its not. I am not a fan of this war but they are continuing to play games like they have for decades. They have factions in their government saying different things. The IRGC is addicted to power and death while the lawmakers ( for all their pre approved propaganda) i think want peace. Then there is Mojtaba, who doesnt control anything and is probably looking like he made a visit to Mustafar (maybe he will auto tune the next lego ai video?) They want to hold the whole world hostage then give them hell. The world has put up with the IRGC for way too long anyway

Once again, innocent sailors are the ones who suffer, despite having no part in any war…
Do these people even understand that sailors on these ships are normal people at work?
I don’t side with the US against Iran, this was a useless war started by the orange guy, but i stand with seafarers because i’m a seafarer myself and those are my colleagues. The life at sea it’s hard, why make it harder…
13
kurizma11 hr ago
+7
Why do people still even question. These people don't care, or are just too dumb to understand.
7
Lorenofing11 hr ago
+4
Well, you see how some people still try to defend Iran as if it’s 100% innocent and completely justified in defending itself just because it was attacked.
Their “actions” are justified in the eyes of people thinking iran is defending but hitting merchant ships is like going after the cashier instead of the people who set the prices.
4
Jealous_Response_4929 hr ago
+4
Iran is far from innocent, but that doesn't absolve the simple fact that the US/Israeli attacks were a colossal foreseeable strategic mistake. And yes Iran, whatever ones personal views maybe, does have a right to defend itself against a war of aggression.

They are paid extra, depends on the company, but does it worth being in a risk zone? Luckily i’m on a ship calling ports in Asia, but if i were there, i would do everything to get off because i see how less they care about humans and life is more important than a piece of steel..

Less than 3000 Americans were killed in 9/11. They recon between 4000-6000 Iranian sailors and soldiers have been killed. This was in peace time with no warning.
Suffice it to say, I think they and their allies will have a bone to pick for a long time.

I mean sure they might not have hugeass destroyers or carriers. But what difference does that make? Neither merchant ships nor US navy can safely pass their chokepoint without risking a drone strike/mine/rocket sinking them. They probably also dont have special forces and equipment specialized in arctic or jungle warfare, but that does not matter for the situation at hand.

All they need is Dhows that can lay mines and gunboats that can intimidate merchant vessels.

this is escalation by signaling not by full closure
Iran knows it cannot sustainably stop all traffic but by threatening every ship ,it raises insurance costs disrupts flows and pressures global actors to push for a deal
the goal is not total blockade it is maximum uncertainty at minimum cost
