And the Houthis are proxies for Iran who have so far remained fairly quiet so far. If Iran sends the word, the Houthis are more than capable of shutting down the Bab Al-Mandeb. They've done it before.
While ships could still enter and exit the Red Sea through the Suez Canal, anything coming or going from Asian, Indian or Chinese ports would now have to go through the Suez Canal, across the Mediterranean and all the way around Africa.

The article about Tony Shwartz who wrote Art Of The Deal was eye opening. Trump wasn’t even capable of sitting down and telling Tony about his life because he doesn’t have the attention span, they tried that but it didn’t work, that’s why he needed to be followed around. He also did stupid things like lie about his dad’s heritage and where he was born. Even when Tony shadowed him and his calls were being listened to most of the stuff couldn’t be included because it made him look so bad. He doesn’t have the attention span to read and didn’t really have friends. His biggest contribution to the book was “I want my name on the front to be bigger” but he insists he wrote the book to the point that some people believe he thinks he did.
Around the time of the book release Trump was losing approximately 1 million a day from his casinos and investments because he’s an idiot. His entire image is a fabrication and he’s never had to face consequences so he never grew up. Even knowing all this it’s STILL shocking how childish he is.

I’d also put Trump in the top 5 probably. What keeps him out of the top spot for me is that I feel like he is more a symptom of the problem than the problem itself. Closing Bab Al-Mandeb is the equivalent of closing the Suez canal. Thats going to piss a lot of countries off, including China and India, both of whom move vast amounts of exports through there. Egypt won't like it either.
Remember when that ship got stuck? This will be far worse, with the potential to trigger a worldwide depression, and will almost certainly widen the war. Egypt could side with the Gulf States, deploying air defenses to assist them, they could deploy ground forces to assist the US, or, they could take the opportunity and try to finish the 1973 war.

It's just the modern coping mechanism. It's either jokes or fully comprehending the impending doom the world is seemingly inevitably sliding down. You could have done everything right, minded your own damn business, voted for the "right" candidate, been a good Samaritan all around, and yet some fuckwit in a country you didn't have any stakes or interest in has now fucked over another country you didn't know anything about. Now you're not sure whether you're going to have to choose between rent or food (or fuel to go to work for said rent of food). Or maybe you're closer to ground zero and are genuinely wondering whether everything you care about is going to get blown up. At best you'll be dead, at worst you'll survive, haunted by the screams of your loved ones as they bleed out from shrapnel piercing their organs.
If everything wasn't so fucked, we wouldn't have to use humour to cope. And no. I don't have a solution.

John Ringo is a sci-fi author who I have to assume is MAGA. There was a plot point in one of the books where aliens assassinated all the world leaders. He then wrote the aliens as confused as to why the US, and only the US, didn't get destabilised at all. To these nuts, the very concept of a succession of authority is some uniquely American exceptionalism that no lesser country could possibly conceive of.

Ringo writes a lot of "women as objects B***" type stuff and (rightly) complained that his fans would show up to conventions and paw his wife because they just assumed he thought of her an an object meant only for the pleasure of men.
He's also buddies with Larry Correia who started the [Sad Puppies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sad_Puppies) movement to try and win Hugo awards for his books because the Hugos only went to "politically correct books, never anything by or about straight white males". That one bummed me out because Correia actually wrote a couple series I liked before I found out he was another whiny man-baby who couldn't accept that women and POC could write better books than his gun heavy "this character who is an accountant and gun loving bad ass who saves the world, gets the hot rich girl and this is TOTALLY not a self insert that I thought up while working as an accountant" Monster Hunter series.

I do not understand how they confused Venezuela which, like most South American countries, traditionally has the combat power of a mashed potato..... With a country of religious fanatics that's been preparing for a holy war for almost 50 years.
And a country that while not a first rank military or armed with the latest wonder weapons is quite familiar with asymmetrical warfare and does indeed have an established professional military.
Iran doesn't have to do anything but pop off a few missiles on occasion to keep the strait shut down. The only thing they need to do is make it clear that they still have missiles that can fire across the strait.
A modern military ship can defend itself and is built to sustain at least some level of damage. Therefore, it could take the risk of running the gap.
An extremely slow tanker ship that is essentially a floating bomb and whose entire job is to make a profit for the people that own it can do neither.
All that's going to happen is oil is going to stay sky high in those tanker ships are going to go elsewhere.
They sure as hell aren't going to run the risk of having hundreds of millions of dollars of investment blown to shit.

Which is crazy because did anything actually change in Venezuela?

Venezuela turned into an American client state. Well, specifically, “somehow” a bunch of money made from Venezuelan oil sales found their way into an offshore bank account linked to Trump.
The führer will have his cut.

They started shipping oil almost immediately to Israel which was a thing that wasn’t happening for a veery long time in their history so there is that. Also they turned it into a puppet state

The issue is that hammer is still very strong disproportionately and the person wielding it is crazy, if he decides that he may not build the table but will make sure you will never make any either. It can only go from bad to worse from here

Yes earlier on he seemed stupid but still in control. Right now he’s lost his marbles as evident in his recent profane-laden ramblings; a true sign of weakness which only emboldens the Iranians. His mockery of foreign allies is also disgusting.
How did a convict with emotional regulation skills of a toddler become the US president the second time?

Yep the reason this is scary is that he’s still the president, and he’s backed into a corner and is not a person capable of admitting fault or retreating.

Sorry, one correction. Trump THINKS he is always negotiating from a position of power. Creating fake crises, negotiating through the media, not holding up his end of the bargain, frivolous lawsuits, etc. Plenty of examples where he never held leverage, and got his ass handed to him.
This is another example where thinking that way again got him into major, irreversible trouble. And he will never learn. This ought to be axiomatic to everyone in the world.

There's really only two ways I see this ending. Either Trump backs out while boasting about how he won to his base (which I doubt because his ego won't let him admit defeat) or some sort of prolonged total annihilation of the region. I'm starting to think that's where we're heading. Iran isn't just going to accept Trump's terms, whatever they are (again still super unclear WHY we are there).
Although maybe one day I'll wake up to a Trump Tweet at 2am where he decided to fire Hegseth, blame the entire war on him and pull out of Iran. That would be wonderful.

We are looking at oil well above $140 and potentially testing $170 shipping costs spiraling, and no good alternatives left.
What flows through Bab al-Mandeb:
In 2023, 9.3 million barrels per day of crude oil and petroleum liquids passed through the strait, nearly 12% of seaborne-traded oil worldwide.
Right now that number is climbing fast because Saudi Arabia is using it as a workaround for Hormuz.
Saudi Arabia had already built a Plan B called the East-West pipeline connecting to Yanbu on the Red Sea, and it began pumping at almost full capacity after Hormuz closed.
If Bab al-Mandeb also closes, the kingdom would effectively lose its final maritime export route.
A simultaneous disruption at both Bab al-Mandeb and Hormuz would block roughly 30% of global container shipping and about 22% of global oil supply, with no viable bypass at scale since unlike Hormuz there is no land pipeline alternative to Bab al-Mandeb.
The only option is the Cape of Good Hope, adding 3,500 miles and 10 to 14 days to Asia-Europe voyages.

ibondolo5 days ago
+17
Apologies for what might be a stupid question. If Bab al-Mandeb closes, that cuts off Southern traffic and anything left that wants to transit the Red Sea. But, ships could still enter and exit the Red Sea via the Suez canal? Does this mean that Saudi ship traffic to Europe could continue (from the pipeline), but Southern traffic, to Asia would be stopped? Impacted but not completely stopped?
