Iran reopens Strait of Hormuz, but threatens to close it again as the US maintains its blockade
Iran says it fully reopened the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels. But questions lingered Saturday about how much freedom ships actually had to transit the waterway as Tehran maintained its grip on who got through and threatened to close it again if the U.S. kept in place its blockade of Irania

I can no longer keep these updates straight. Can somebody make a "Is Hormuz Open" website, like the one for whether or not Mercury is in retrograde?

I don't get it, where is the "closed" part, there's ships everywhere?
1
Syssareth 1 day ago +2
Thanks for this! I don't know enough/can't keep up enough to know if it's accurate, but whoever it is knows what they're doing insofar as designing a site, at least. Tons of info without looking cluttered.

The hard truth is nobody knows wtf is going on. Thats why this is so chaotic and even financial markets dont know wtf oil is worth atm. Definitely not the fault of whoever made that site though.

There actually is a website called exactly that (not 100% sure on its accuracy,so take it with a grain of salt): [Is Hormuz Open Yet?](https://www.ishormuzopenyet.com/)
1
musci12234 1 day ago +1
You don't need to keep up. Just roll a d6 and if it lands 7 up then strait is open otherwise it is closed.

Mercury is ALWAYS in retrograde!

These headlines almost seem like they are outdated as soon as they are posted. Or at least, they are quickly contradicted by either IRGC or Trump via social media. At this point it doesn't matter to the general public who said it is/isn't open, it matter if ships are getting through.

Yeah people need to just start checking the shipping tracker. There was a burst that went to leave, then turned back around lmao.

The press likes to spread unverified information all the time. This is why we're seeing all this shit. Journalism is dead. The press no longer cares about verifying things before publishing them. They'll quote politicians who lie verbatim and help them spread those lies around the world.
6
itsFelbourne 1 day ago +71
Fact checking of even the most basic google searching is just dead in mainstream media How can you be 6+ hours late to the most important story in the world, and get absolutely all the important details wrong? Utterly sad journalism Basically nothing has passed the strait except a few Iranian ships that will be turned back at the blockade. Iran turned back dozens of ships that tried to pass after their announcement. They never opened it. They never reopened it. Their foreign minister just lied.

It's literally insane to me how basically all major media outlets have not reported on the fact that almost zero ships have crossed the strait today and that Iran is saying the strait is closed until the US lifts the blockade. They're all still running headlines like "Hopes for Peace Deal Rise After Iran Says Strait Is Open" or "Iran declares Strait of Hormuz 'completely open'; Trump says U.S. blockade 'will remain in full force' until peace deal" Straight up journalistic malpractice.

Between this and the Epstein stuff, I’ve become completely disillusioned by mainstream media. Even the large sublistnooks here including this one.
10
OrangutanArmy 1 day ago +16
The amount of bullshitting going on is insane. Oil markets acting like its fine now. I'm sure it'll fall apart over the weekend when everyone realises it hasn't changed, again..
16
itsFelbourne 1 day ago +7
Even the insurance companies bought in this time. It was a mad dash of ships surging towards the strait like an hour or two after the announcement. There's not even any explanation for why all the ships suddenly turned back available as far as I know, or what they were told. But it was a span of like 15 minutes and every single one cut engines or turned back.

gaflar 1 day ago +5
Its the same thing every time. The news reports that the strait is open, markets rally and oil plummets. Trading closes on friday aft in the west and all the finance bros shakes hands and go home for the weekend. Monday morning they realize the strait was never open and oil has soared again. Then the talk of reopening/ceasefires begin again, a new deadline or a new reopening is announced, rinse and repeat. The lever-pulling has become rhythmic.

How about we just make our own conclusion by checking one single thing? How many ships passed in the last 24 hours vs how many normally gets passed? It’s all public information. That’s how you determine if the strait is open, not by announcement.
9
redditobserverone 1 day ago +3
Any serious news service would do what you just said. “An average of 138 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz daily prior to the 2026 U.S.-Iran conflict. This strategic chokepoint, handling a quarter of the world's seaborne oil, saw traffic drop significantly after the conflict began on February 28, 2026, creating a de facto blockade. WSJ” Next you look at satellite pictures and count the ships currently going through, Then you count the public lies. That is how you serve readers, not by amplifying lies verbatim. Journalists: Provide context jand quit being stenographers more concerned with access than accuracy.

The strait is not open, it never was. The Islamic regime still have the exact same conditions in place. Also Iran rejects Trump's claim that they will hand over their enriched uranium.
5
QFGTrialByFire 1 day ago +12
Yup its not open and confirmed by Iran that its closed just a few hours ago: [https://x.com/mb\_ghalibaf/status/2045264713593114970](https://x.com/mb_ghalibaf/status/2045264713593114970) "The U.S. President made seven claims in one hour, and all seven are false. They did not win the war with these lies, and they certainly will not get anywhere in negotiations either With the continuation of the blockade, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open"

Its open, then closed. Closed then open. Its only open if you pay the toll. Now the US is blocking the strait from being open. Oh wait now its open for business, but not really! Rinse and repeat.

Can we rename the Strait of Hormuz to Schrodinger's Strait or the Quantum Strait? It seems to be in a state of open and close at the same time.

I think the us is only doing a blockade of ships coming from or going to a port in Iran.
