This ^ If, say, China and Russia decided they felt froggy one day and decided to jump on US, and we asked Israel for help: all of a sudden it'd be, "You mean.. little ol *me?* Were just a tiny little country in a.. well, we're in a tough neighborhood you guys. Cmon. But one thing for sure- we're rooting for ya. Go get em big guy!"

If I could upvote this more I would because I think it’s something most people don’t realize about US-Israel relationships. It’s not a conventional alliance like most of the NATO nations. The whole “our most dependable ally in the Middle East shtick” isn’t really true. That’s a line for the Christian voters of the US who think Israel has more in common with them then they do the rest of the Middle East (hint: they don’t, talk to an Israeli or visit and you’ll find more similarities between them and a Jordanian then you would them and a New Yorker). Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait… the US has a lot of really good relationships in the Middle East and in many ways most of them offer MORE to the US than Israel. Look at both GWOT and the Gulf War for an example. This part without judgment, because I think it’s a complicated thing to pass judgment on: Israel, likewise, has never given a shit what anyone thinks of it and what it does. The above nations would never act without US weigh in. Israel does whatever the f*** it wants. The US role there has, historically, largely been more of a containment and pacifying voice. No one in the Middle East liked them and they didn’t like anyone else, like the outcast kid in the classroom. The US has been the teacher in the room keeping all parties from just straight fighting each other over the smallest things because that benefits the US too. That’s what’s the most troubling about this war, is that it now appears like the US Administration is buying into what they’ve been selling voters and are just following whatever Israel wants to do. That’s a marked difference in how we’ve handled that relationship previously

I hope Israel realizes the Iran doesn’t import uranium, they have their own mines. At some point Iran will have a nuclear weapon, the agreement to prevent it was negotiated and signed by a black man who wore a tan suit…

If you've been watching, its been non stop supply chain building, moving forces to the region, and repositioning. There was never going to be a deal. The world economy is going to see a depression just from what's already been damaged in the markets. They can prop up the numbers per barrel for awhile longer, but it will correct.
137
pagerussell 2 days ago +11
>They can prop up the numbers per barrel for awhile longer, but it will correct. Drawdown on oil reserves has been very high, and for obvious reasons cannot go on indefinitely. This is what the CEO of JP Morgan was basically saying at a week ago. If this goes on much longer we will get price increases until demand destruction.

They both want to resume.the war. But some angel close to Trump is managing to make him fear the likely consequences of doing so. I wonder for how long...
32
xterminatr 2 days ago +83
It's not some angel whispering in his ear, it's the fact that we were running out of munitions to keep bombing them with while also protecting our assets. Trump jumped head first into this conflict completely unprepared because the whole administration is blatantly incompetent.
83
Feisty_System_4751 2 days ago +25
I'll believe a lot of things before I believe Trump changed his mind based on facts. Someone at some point convinced him things would not go as he wished. To me that's an angel.
25
xterminatr 2 days ago +33
I don't think he's changed his mind, I think we're logistically unable to continue attacking or we would be. Wars aren't won by just blowing stuff up, they are won by supply chains, and we have nothing remotely capable of supplying a consistent stream of weapons, diesel, food, troops, etc. across the world when no allies will help us. Many empires have learned this the hard way..
33

12
ceelogreenicanth 2 days ago +11
We killed a lot of Vietnamese, but it cost them less to supply, and it cost us too much to try and stop them. It turns out killing people doesn't end wars and the wrong lessons were learned from WWII. The military did do it's best to adapt but it never learned how to fight ideology. Now we have idiots that think the issue is we didn't go medieval.

Probably Rubio. He strikes me as the only somewhat competent member of the admin. Not that it means much considering how low the bar is. But he's probably scared that this'll kill his chances in 2028.
25
Feisty_System_4751 2 days ago +16
We can only guess, but that's a good one. Rubio is more of a LATAM hawk not a Middle East Hawk. The other option is Vance but I doubt Trump listens to him. My guess is that some high ranking general is the angel here.
16
Sea-Maybe-9979 2 days ago +13
Vance may be incompetent, but he's bought and paid for by Peter Thiel, and he didn't spend all that time and effort for Vance to he a half term senator and 1-and-done VP. Vance has always been against the war and so maybe he's affective as backing vocals to Rubio.

You're describing prediction markets, which have no basis in reality, vs the stock market, which has at least SOME basis in economic reality. If the underlying economies are not actually impacted by Trump's stupid lies, then there's no reason to sell at the dip.

To be fair to Trump Iran wants sanctions to be lifted without quitting their nuclear program, war reparations when they've themselves been bombing random non-aggressor countries, and "full sovereignty" over the strait, basically the ability to blackmail international shipping, which is very explicitly banned by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. This one has got to be on Iran, doesn't matter who is on the other side, these aren't even remotely reasonable demands.
16
gw2master 2 days ago +2
(1) They'd be fools to give up their nuclear weapons program: it's the only way to stop bullies like Russia, Israel, and the US. (2) Reparations is 100% reasonable. We attacked them for no valid reason. We should pay. (3) They've bombed countries who have US bases in them: totally fair game. Plus, without the nukes version of MAD, their only way to defend themselves from bullies is the economy version of MAD. (4) There shouldn't be a toll, but realistically, at this point, there's going to be one. Israel and US should pay that toll for everyone who goes through the strait. Apart from #4, hese are all very reasonable demands.
2
Hextopia 2 days ago +8
* 1 Their constant drive for nuclear weapons is most of the reason they're an international pariah, and it will only *increase* the likelihood they get attacked again, not lessen it. * 2 They haven't paid reparations to anyone they've been unprovoked attacking for decades through terrorist intermediaries, why would anyone pay them for returning the favor? * 3 They've bombed random civilian targets throughout those countries. Your point here would only be valid if they actually made a remote attempt to target actual military targets. * 4 We agree that a toll is a wild idea.

That's the great thing about having someone in power who only cares about maximizing next quarter's profits and isn't afraid to cheat in power. If you have the system rigged, YOU will make money. Alot of it. Even if the market crashes. The US economy is operating on the same logic as KKR or Bain Capital. There is a lot of money in a bankruptcy if you know how to manage one. And Trump made alot of money on the way down on all of his bankruptcies.

This is not surprising at all. We are not even close to the amount of negotiation that needs to happen for anything resembling a cease fire. Realistically these negotiation happen on the time span of years. not weeks. The Obama deal, the deal trump tore up like it was nothing, took 30 month to negotiate. So the idea that we can have a cease fire, even if both side wants one, in weeks is nonsensical. They can't even figure out how to agree on a 1 page memorandum on what to talk about in the future. Iran is not stupid. They see the poll numbers, Republican is gonna lose the midterms, or they would have to rig it so egregiously, it would trigger mass unrest if not a civil war. Either way, US is gonna have way bigger things to worry about in a couple of month. In fact keeping oil prices high is a key factor in that unravelling of American democracy. So they have no incentive to go to the table. Iran think it might actually out last America itself, and they might be right.
31
wocka-jocka-blocka 2 days ago +15
Iran is gonna drag any kind of real agreement WAY out past the midterm elections ... because Trump is the person responsible for decapitating the leadership of their country. And we shouldn't forget it. Iran is making him--and by extension, US--take it in the shorts economically, and they have no reason to let up until Trump suffers a real defeat in November. Iran knows he just can't start dropping bombs again (though he'll continually threaten to do so), he just doesn't have any popular support. And every bomb he drops just reminds Americans that he has no control over this thing HE STARTED.
15
cruelsensei 2 days ago +19
>Iran think it might actually out last America itself, and they might be right. The CIA agrees. They reported to Congress that they estimate Iran can hold out for at least another 4-5 months. The massive price increases for fuel, food, and just about everything else, will hit the US in about 2 months. How long will Americans tolerate gas prices over $8 and food prices up 50% or more?

Trump strongly supported Ukraine giving up land to Russia in his 28 point peace proposal. How much of Manhattan will Trump be willing to cede to Iran to ensure a lasting peace?

We already won the war. Trump said it like 20 times now. Thank you for your attention on this matter.

So this is like the GOP sponsored border bill that got bipartisan support and then they killed it themselves when Trump was upset because it wouldn't help him get any credit?

Ultimately, if they make a deal, yes. It’s the “Barack Hussein Obama’s Iran deal was bad. Mine is the best ever.” But it will be objectively and significantly worse. But currently, its about market manipulation and shoveling government money into the pockets of his cronies, be it defense contractors, or the developers of the now proposed $1 billion in funding for the “East Wing Security Projects” aka the Ball Room.

Trump keeps trash talking the 2015 Obama nuclear deal which called for Iran to stop uranium enrichment for 15 years, but then offers a deal where Iran has to stop enrichment for 20 years. He basically offered Iran the same deal.

Iran should just say sure, but it has to be the original JCOPA, and you have to call it Obamas nuclear deal.

The public deserves to understand what ARE acceptable conditions for a war we didn’t want, promised wouldn’t happen, and has made day-to-day economic conditions worse and less predictable.

Don’t worry there will be a ceasefire sometime next week. And then we’ll bomb then again over the weekend, just love taps. And rinse and repeat until $10/gallon.

Did we expect anything else? Trump's boss announced that he the war can not end until the uranium is removed. So war will continue.

It's too late for that, Iran has been activated. You don't just bomb a school with 150 children then get to say sorry and walk away. This is costing the USA millions everyday until they remove Trump.

Setting aside the blatant market manipulation - it's pretty clear that Trumps 'Art of the deal' is, and always has been, just belligerently applying maximum pressure until the other side folds (which is why any time the negotiations get some sort of traction with compromise trump just smacks it down with a tweet) or he gets bored and wanders off. Well this time, he can't just wander off and the other side is very much prepared to endure a whole heap more pain than he is. This is going to be very painful exercise for all of us as Trump either comes up with a way to drop the whole thing without looking like moron (difficult), or is forced to accept a ball crushingly embarrassing deal when the US actually starts to feel the results of the oil crisis (i.e. fuel shortages and the economy slowing) as both his base and billionaire supports all start screaming at him to do something, anything to stop the economy falling into recession.

This is why you listen to people who tell you things that you don't want to hear. The Iranian regime is an evil regime; but that does not mean that a few months of an air and naval campaign is going to change that? Nope. You know that someone tried to tell this administration that. You know they did not listen.

Sadly this puts the world in a really bad place because Trump does not want to surrender, Iran doesn’t want to surrender and will world bleeds because of it. The only way US will take a surrender deal if Congress forces him to, and that leaves, Congress or the people voted for it holding the bag. I don’t think no congressman is willing to take that risk/liability because their opponent will use that agains them in the next election.

How about reinstating the agreement that the Obama administration negotiated with Iran. This is something to which Iran already agreed, it made it clear that Iran was not seeking a nuclear weapon, allowed peaceful use of nuclear energy with inspections, and allowed free access to shipping. If not for the unimaginable stupidity of Trump, we would have been operating under the Obama-era agreement and a few fewer deaths would have occurred. US expenditures and the upheaval to the US economy would have been avoided. There might actually have been enough money saved to allow President Stupid to build a ballroom somewhere. While I know President Stupid never would agree to it, it would be perhaps a way to settle things to appoint (if he would accept it) President Obama as special envoy (instead of a couple of out-of- their-league real estate investors) to negotiate a reinstatement of the original agreement. Wishful thinking?
