I have been there when I was in the Navy. It’s basically an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Ok can you answer this for me? An old boss of mine was stationed in DG. He said there was a kinda/sorta hazing thing of sending new guys to take the trash out at certain times of the day, because the monkeys always trash-picked at the same time of day. So, the new guy would end up running down the street with angry monkeys chasing them for bothering their feast. Recall anything like that?
69
Blatherman069 Mar 21, 2026 +31
There are no monkeys on DG, unless they've been introduced in the last 10 years or so. Chickens and Donkeys, yes. Monkeys, no.
31
OddCook4909 Mar 21, 2026 +4
Donkeys are bros. Did you make any donkey friends?

It's been ten years since I was there. That many carbs now and I'd likely die. Have some of my best memories from working on that island. Also got to spend a month in Crete back in 2016. Edit: autocorrect got me again. Launch ze missiles.

To be fair it is an island in the indian ocean i doubt the average person could name it
37
Smart_Ass_Dave Mar 21, 2026 +8
Oh ya, I'm a huge geography nerd and it's small enough I'd struggle to find it. I'd say I know where it is *reputationally* as opposed to recognizing it's shape and location.

Its base that Trump supported turning over to Mauritius by U.K. to end colonial rule only to call out U.K. later this Feb being weak for turning over the islands.

> Up to 2,000 Chagossians were forcibly removed from the archipelago in the 1960s and 1970s and resettled mainly in Mauritius and Britain The answer is more nuanced than just "British genocided the population"

Humxnsco_at_220416 Mar 21, 2026 +9
They must have gotten their hands on some more tomahawks. They really should stop setting out the missiles on the window sill to cool down after making them.
9
TimmmmyStuuuuuu Mar 21, 2026 +480
Wall street journal is also reporting that an Iranian missile with a range of 4000km is much larger than previously thought and that they are unable to confirm if it was successfully intercepted. Edit: just wanted to add that a missile with a 4000km, depending where in Iran it’s launched from, could reach most of Europe and maybe even as far as France/UK.

WSJ reports one failed in flight and one was intercepted
198
TimmmmyStuuuuuu Mar 21, 2026 +96
This is what I see, maybe they updated it elsewhere. “One of the missiles failed in flight, and a U.S. warship fired an SM-3 interceptor at the other, according to two of the people. It couldn't be determined if an interception was made, according to one of the officials.”

930
kingtacticool Mar 21, 2026 +876
For real. Iran is basically Iraq x Afghanistan. There's a reason no other president was dumb enough to poke that dragon. And this idiot did it with absolutely no planning whatsoever. This is going to go down in history as one of the dumbest foreign policy decisions of all time.
876
PlanktonFun5387 Mar 21, 2026 +433
It’s already the dumbest foreign policy decision of all time. Narrowly beating out withdrawing from the nuclear deal. Buddy is an all timer in negotiations

There was a dude who sent back a trade envoy from Genghis Khan in a body bag. Actually, iirc, it was just a head bag. Genghis said "OK, that HAS to have been a mistake. Let's try again with a super generous gift so this m*********** has a chance to survive" Guy sent another trade delegations worth of heads back to Genghis fricking Khan. Genghis wiped the entire civilization from the face of the earth, and sent out parties to find every mention of it in every library they could find and destroyed those records, too. We didn't know about it for a long assed time as a result. THAT, my friend, is the biggest foreign policy blunder of all time. But this is way up in the hierarchy somewhere. If this results in a nuclear war, then you win the point.
47
ostensiblyzero Mar 21, 2026 +8
Funnily enough that was the Khwarizmian empire located in modern day Iran.
8
Aggressive-Kitchen18 Mar 21, 2026 +36
He was groomed by the Adelson and the Israel lobby to do just that. To tear the deal apart.

Id argue withdrawing from the TPP is worse than withdrawing from the nuclear deal, but bith are bad.
4

Of all time? Worse than a winter Russian invasion?
14
SeismicFrog Mar 21, 2026 +31

That's not really foreign policy per se
11
AcousticOnomatopoeia Mar 21, 2026 +15
It's not a foreign policy decision The President isn't capable of making decisions, Alzheimer's, syphilitic dementia, whatever, he's but a puppet. Just like Reagan, the other Republican hero, that party can't win unless they're exploiting mental deficiencies.

11
wagon_ear Mar 21, 2026 +38
Please don't take my comment as support for the Iran war, because I think it's the dumbest thing we could be doing - But the USA wasn't fighting against the Iraqi or Afghan armies, so it's a slightly different situation. The terrorist groups based in those countries were nebulous and had no issues continuing to fight indefinitely. How do you finish a "war on terror"? It's impossible.  I can imagine a world in which Iran as a nation eventually says "enough is enough" and stops fighting. But I guess it *is* definitely possible that insurgents pop up in Iran too, and turn it into another Afghanistan anyway.
38
iismitch55 Mar 21, 2026 +47
Iran also spent years training decentralized militia across the Middle East, so I’m sure it would devolve into that. However, Iran only has to outlast the political will of the American people (which is very low) and the attention span of a dementia patient. If there’s a standing Iranian government that will continue to seek nuclear weapons after the conclusion of the war, then this is a short term setback. We will hear all the same talking points again in 5-10 years.
47
Revolutionary-Mode75 Mar 21, 2026 +16
It basically zero. I'm not even sure Iran actually sinking a carrier would raise America will up much, in fact i suspect many Americans would probably think we kind deserve to lose a aircraft carrier. May be a an attack on US soil itself, a drone strike on a oil refinery, Americans still see them have heavily shielded from direct attacks by Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
16
Objective-Rip3008 Mar 21, 2026 +8
Even a direct attack on us soil i feel would just have people demand trump do a ceasefire, unless it was like a 9/11 style mass civilian causality. Support for trump and this war just isnt there at all.
8
Hubert_J_Cumberdale Mar 21, 2026 +4
If 9/11 happened today, half the country would scream that they don't give a shit about a blue "demoncrap" state like NY being attacked. Seriously.
4
noodlethebear Mar 21, 2026 +17
The US was fighting the Iraqi and Afghan armies in those wars, what turned them into decades long conflicts was what happened after those militaries were defeated. The Iraq war was initially fought against the Iraqi Ground Forces (Iraq’s army) and after their defeat the war devolved into fighting militias. The war in Afghanistan was fought against the Taliban, which was the government and military of Afghanistan. After they were overthrown the war devolved into fighting militias. If the Iranian government said “enough is enough” and stopped fighting, resulting in the US being in charge of the country, an insurgency isn’t a possibility - it’s guaranteed.
17
Hubert_J_Cumberdale Mar 21, 2026 +3
> The war in Afghanistan was fought against the Taliban, And after 20 years of war, we defeated the Taliban and replaced them with... *the Taliban*. USA USA USA
3
Daleabbo Mar 21, 2026 +9
The problem is the leader of Iran wasnt just a political leader he was a religious leader. This is the same problem but worse because to get to the same level as Afghanistan the might be no more oil or gas from the Middle east.
9
PopPop-Magnitude Mar 21, 2026 +6
I think by the time Iran lays down its weapons, the damage will be done and will take decades to undo.
6

yeah its crazy that were at a point where just trying to have a factual discussion requires some kind of warning at the beginning of the comment
9
ArrowheadDZ Mar 21, 2026 +3
This is potentially existential for the ruling parties in Iran. Their choices may be to keep fighting back no matter what, or end up with their entire extended families beheaded and publicly paraded. The profound resentment of the people cannot be excluded from the calculus about how hard the government will fight on.
3
EntrepreneurPlus7091 Mar 21, 2026 +8
Stops fighting and what? Let themselves be killed? Thats like asking Ukraine to give up, they are fighting to not die, thats their goal, ask the leader of the war what they want, its total genocide thats what Israel wants and they are very clear.
8
JonBoy82 Mar 21, 2026 +10

10
atotalmess__ Mar 21, 2026 +47
Iran spent the last twenty some years looking at what the US did to Afghanistan and Iraq (who the US once armed with about 500M of military equipment to invade Iran). They watched as Israel’s influence over the US grew, paid off politician by politician, propaganda by propaganda. They also spent the last decade increasing relations with the two countries the US cannot exercise total economic control over. They knew this day would come and they prepared for it well.

Seems like the Iranians have better war plans than the Americans
237
Malaix Mar 21, 2026 +166
US had war plans and had been war gaming an Iranian conflict for decades. Trump's admin literally ignored all of it. They straight up didn't do the reading on it. Its why they are all talking about how the closure of the strait was some "mysterious surprise tactic" they didn't see coming even though everyone knew that would be their strategy for years. The Trump admin just didn't think it needed to read any reports or intel on the matter. These dipshits wake up with an impulse ask chatGPT to print a script and run with it. Literally. Its the influencer admin lead by a fox news grandpa with dementia and a short as f*** attention span who delegate most of the work to chat bots because they are all too busy golfing, wining and dining, flying their girls on government planes, and getting drunk and high. That's what's going on.
166
tots4scott Mar 21, 2026 +18

You can start by looking at the decommissioned mine sweeping ships.
6
Malaix Mar 21, 2026 +7
Mostly just reading off what they are saying everything out of their mouths is how shocked and surprised and caught off guard they are with the blatantly obvious realities of invading Iran. Things we all know would have been in the pentagons intel on the matter.

That’s like bombing China because they think they’ll attack Taiwan at some point but they won’t because China is a big dog with nukes. This is why NK got them
3
Edgele55Placebo Mar 21, 2026 +341
Bet the us wouldn’t attack them if a serial child rapist and his enablers weren’t in charge

HarpCanBall Mar 21, 2026 +56
it's hilarious that we have to ask for clarification on which country you mean
56
Cl1mh4224rd Mar 21, 2026 +44
>it's hilarious that we have to ask for clarification on which country you mean And it's more distrubing that we **don't have to**.
44
Philodendritic Mar 21, 2026 +11
We do, it’s just that in one country it’s completely legal and the other has to hide it.

rajastrums_1 Mar 21, 2026 +148
This war is going to be longer. How much longer? Well it ain't ending anytime soon. Trump admin is going to need a distraction from their distraction. Cuba? False flag?
148
userousnameous Mar 21, 2026 +77
He's gonna have to release the Epstein files. As a distraction from World War 3.
77
Direct_Witness1248 Mar 21, 2026 +10
Weren't they already legally obligated to do that months ago and still haven't released all of them?

TuxPaper Mar 21, 2026 +54
Once again, it'll be a democratic president that has to wind down yet another war that the republicans start. The pattern keeps repeating, if only there was an education system in the US that teaches history and basic critical thinking.
54
beyondplutola Mar 21, 2026 +29
Every Republican president since 1988 has started a war in the Middle East. We are coming up on forty years of this from them. Is their end game just to nuke the place or enslave its people?
29
scuzzy987 Mar 21, 2026 +20
Wreck everything, get everyone mad so democrats get elected, leave mess for democrats to clean up, blame democrats because sacrifices need to be made to clean up the mess, get people mad at democrats because things aren't as good as under Trump when he was handing out gifts with bill coming due later, republican gets elected

Hopefully the military brass will shut down Cuba, opening a front in our backyard when we are ensnarled in the most complicated region in humanity is a poor decision, especially if Cuba retaliated asymmetrically on our energy infrastructure on the gulf that is right next to them and cripples our access to the unavailable fossil fuel commodities

douche_packer Mar 21, 2026 +5
a false flag for a war thats already underway?

m_balloni Mar 21, 2026 +16
I'm from LATAM and my cousin's name is Diego Garcia 🤣

Ginsenj Mar 21, 2026 +117
Dude I have no clue whats going on with the Iranian capabilities thanks to the turbo lying pedo squad.

tigolbing Mar 21, 2026 +33
If the UK gets pulled in we may see a clear perspective, one not riddled with lies
33
ebulient Mar 21, 2026 +60
The UK needs to do its very best to *not* get pulled into this war.

elykl12 Mar 21, 2026 +40
Starmer try to not f*** up challenge: Very hard
40
supe_snow_man Mar 21, 2026 +18
LOL if you think the UK won't lie to keep the narrative going in the "right" direction.

intelligentx5 Mar 21, 2026 +14
All good, just use the Jewish space lasers to shoot them down
14
Beautiful-Station143 Mar 21, 2026 +56
Doesn’t have to hit to thin out AA defenses.
56
flamehead2k1 Mar 21, 2026 +66
True in concept but not applicable to two missiles against Diego Garcia
66
boris_squanch Mar 21, 2026 +14
Especially when US is firing like 9 patriots at everything that moves
14
ahhhfrag Mar 21, 2026 +21
Just shy of double what we thought the range was. I wonder what other surprises they have in store. I dont think I us warship is getting anywhere near that gulf.
21
OrbitalReflection Mar 21, 2026 +17
It's not a US base. It's British, but we have bombers there.
17
SignificanceFine3582 Mar 21, 2026 +17
Distinction without a difference. Camp Thunder Cove is on the island and is a US base.
17
tryingtogetitwrite Mar 21, 2026 +5
Tons of US ships and a base there.

Bleezy79 Mar 21, 2026 +11
Im near San Diego, CA and this freaked me out for a second.
11
Android_onca Mar 21, 2026 +15
No news can make me sympathetic towards the federal gov of the US at this point
15
lostredditorlurking Mar 21, 2026 +24
Didn't Trump just said "Mission Accomplished" and the war is winding down?
24
Alexis_J_M Mar 21, 2026 +12
He accomplished Putin's mission of getting sanctions on Russian oil lifted. Everything else, well, it's just more defense contractors buying TrumpCoin to get in line for those juicy no bid contracts.
12
seedless0 Mar 21, 2026 +50
I mean. I threw a stone **at** the north pole. Doesn't mean it got there.
50
lizardtrench Mar 21, 2026 +14
If the US military spent $10 million to intercept your rock, it probably had a pretty good chance of getting there!
14
Pterocacti Mar 21, 2026 +31
if your stone was carrying explosives then it's probably notable that you threw it
31
FetusDrive Mar 21, 2026 +4
That’s a massive arm you got if another missile shot it out of the sky out of necessity.
4
IceMysterious3056 Mar 21, 2026 +25
2.5k miles....this is crazy. I thought Iran got obliterated with even having these capabilities as Trump said.
25
that_70_show_fan Mar 21, 2026 +29
KM is short for Kilometers. Approx 2500miles.
29
Not_Cleaver Mar 21, 2026 +12
One of the missiles failed as it launched. It’s a bit generous to say that particular missile had capability to reach that far.
12
Slight_Monk3314 Mar 21, 2026 +21
Starting WWIII to distract from the Epstein files keeps getting worse. FML.
21
Healthy_Razzmatazz38 Mar 21, 2026 +17
in a weird way this is good. they used 2 long range weapons showing where they were launched, one failed, the other was easily intercepted.
17
FetusDrive Mar 21, 2026 +13
How do you know it was easily intercepted rather than just intercepted? Are there different levels when they get intercepted, how do you know this one was one.
13
Plantparty20 Mar 21, 2026 +10
Feels like a show of force so the public realizes we’ve been lied to about their capabilities
10
BigBoyYuyuh Mar 21, 2026 +11
Wouldn’t have happened if Trump Didn’t start a war.
