Rage quitting a war is almost unprecedented in history, unless I'm mistaken. Edit: a military defeat and rage quitting are not equivalent.

Trotsky kind of tried at the end of the Great War. He didn't like the peace terms Germany was offering so he came up with a cunning plan: Russia would withdraw from peace talks, unilaterally declare the war over, and demobilize. The Germans, however, did not agree that the war was over and so about a week later they resumed their offensive; about a week after that Russia was forced to sign a harsher peace treaty than what was on the table two weeks prior.

DrSFalken Apr 1, 2026 +1
That's just about the only example I know of... and yeah, it was a bit bizarre. Basically gambling that Germany wouldn't push harder if they just took their ball and went home.
1
Lancestrike Apr 1, 2026 +1
I'm sure Germany command was quite perplexed at the move.
1
Alt4816 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I would guess that they first assumed it was some sort of trap or feigned retreat.
1
fiction8 Apr 1, 2026 +1
He was stalling for time because they had no army/couldn't afford to keep the war going. It kind of worked. Before much happened in the areas they surrendered at Brest-Litovsk, Germany was defeated on the Western front and the treaty got nullified.

CV90_120 Apr 1, 2026 +1
> That's just about the only example I know of Any time in history that an army retreats, loses morale, loses interest or otherwise stops trying is the same thing, and history is absolutely littered with examples. Roman armies did it frequently when they lost confidence in an emperor. It usually signals the end of the leadership of the retreating army.

History can repeat itself here. The price of oil has trump by the balls and the Iranians know that. They can also still send drones to hit oil tankers even angry after boots on the ground, more bombing of Iranian targets etc. Even once trump pulls out, Iran will continue to 'toll' the straits.

BetSquare7190 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Good one! Bolcheviks, like Trump, were compulsive liars, lived in their own alternate universe, and cared little for reality.
1
gaylord9000 Apr 1, 2026 +1
At least the Bolsheviks believed in something virtuous. Trump believes in nothing.

1
MarkNutt25 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Its actually not an uncommon outcome in a war where the invader has lost (or is clearly losing) and the defender has no realistic way of bringing the fight back to them. The US in Vietnam, every empire that's ever invaded Afghanistan, Pyrrhus of Epirus' expedition to Italy, the Imjin War (Japan's first invasion of Korea), etc.
1
BetSquare7190 Apr 1, 2026 +1
You are confusing rage quitting with a military defeat, which ends with one or multiple agreements between all parties involved, and can often be completed over multiple years, such as it was the case in Vietnam and Afghanistan (both for Soviet Union and the US).
1
vonGlick Apr 1, 2026 +1
No, he is right. At least Pyrrhus achieved military success but Romans refused to negotiate with him. So he left to Sicily to fight Cartage (watch out Cuba) only to return again to Italy and get defeated at Battle of Beneventum after which he left permanently.

Holden_SSV Apr 1, 2026 +1
To be fair vietnam is basically like the ukraine russia war.  Except we were trying to stop communism and gain a strategic foothold instead of protecting or gaining land. Just like russia we thought we would jump in and flabergast them with america the great and advanced tech. Only problem is the american public was done seeing dead soldiers sent home for no apparent gain plus the benjamins we pissed away. All of this is interconnected since russia invaded.  The end game im not certain on.  But it's no coincidence the drama with gaza, ukraine, russia, venezuela, cuba, mexico..... heck lets just throw everyone on here.  Starts with a c oil company, oil money,..... My guess is low key our allies didn't want to take part in trumps scheme.  And he is very desperate.  He knows he isn't a spring chicken.   He has dirt and it's known to other powerful people.  Not trying to act like im this great detective.  I know others know this.  It's the ignorant "they took our jobs" type that he is exploiting.

What a strange time to be alive in America. I am more likely to believe the other person, whomever is speaking opposite our own president. And it’s a self inflicted wound, Trump’s “straight talk” that his supporters were so fond of has never been straight, coherent, or honest. And so here we are. Words matter.

I had the same thought an hour ago. I believe whatever Iran is saying, even though I still take it with a grain of salt, more than what this administration says.
1
ryguydrummerboy Apr 1, 2026 +1
Its just a sign how far our country has fallen. I too tend to think iran has no *reason* to make up shit. Why get in your enemy's way when they're making a mistake? Like you, big grain of salt, but really can't believe we're at a stage where when Iran announces something I'm like "yeah. probably" and when my own president does its "well thats just a lie"
1
andyraylan Apr 1, 2026 +1
They do have logic on their side, which doesn’t hurt. And you are so right, why get in Trump’s way as he makes one stumble after another. He has proven incapable of running so stay out his way and let him trip and fall all on his own.
1
cllxo Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yeah. There is plenty of manure around the Midwest. They just want chemical fertilizer because tariffs. We can be sustainable but refuse to. And I agree that anyone else is more credible than trump or his government.
1
IaMm1N3 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Oh I disagree. You can't get those outputs using solely manure
1
BlackeeGreen Apr 1, 2026 +1

1
WarLorax Apr 1, 2026 +1
The "straight talk"  was always a dog whistle for racism
1
andyraylan Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yes. But I always thought that the point a dog whistle was plausible deniability. Trump would deny himself that plausible deniability in the very next sentence by saying the quiet part out loud. So, one could argue that both Trump and his supporters have no plausible deniability and it’s just a whistle now.

If this ends without the US opening the strait by force that will be a humiliation for the US. But if this ends even without Iran agreeing to voluntarily stop it's attacks on shipping as part of negotiated end of hostilities that will be 100 times more of a humiliation. I don't know how his presidency would survive such an outcome, he would be a lame duck for the next 2 plus years. It would be in the news daily
1
Common-Concentrate-2 Apr 1, 2026 +1
On one hand, Trump is truly incapable of humiliation. All of us are humiliated - we're humiliated daily by his actions. But he will invent some story to tell himself, to prevent experiencing his own humiliation. There will be actions associated with that story, too - He's going to start doing the weirdest, most frantic shit ever - Its scary to think of, because once again - he already does the stupidest, most embarrassing stuff.
1
Sarenai7 Apr 1, 2026 +1
His presidency won’t end outside of anything less than nature running its course or force.
1
brontosaurusguy Apr 1, 2026 +1
It ends with US vacating the region and Iran taking over the strait.  ie the worst military blunder in modern history..  a superpower starts a war for no reason and then loses everything we had in the region Just Trump shit

itsatumbleweed Apr 1, 2026 +21
Probably why Trump just listed a bunch of goals/accomplishments and opening the strait isn't one. He's taking all the things that he can argue have come to pass, call those the goals, and declare victory.
21
SinkHoleDeMayo Apr 1, 2026 +1
And he probably expects if he walks away then the Strait will open again like magic.

1
angrylawyer Apr 1, 2026 +1
Gonna rant but it's beyond unfathomable to me how angry republicans would be if the parties were reversed here. *Everything* trump is doing is what republicans have accused past presidents of doing, consolidating power, bypassing branches, trying to influence elections, etc. I mean f***, I remember when it was 'king obama' because republicans yelled about him 'ruling by EO'...and now here we are. Obama did 276 EO's in his 8 years and trump has done 253 *since last f****** january*. If you count his first term he's done *473* EO's so far. and he's on track to be the most EO's of any president since f****** truman. So where's the outrage???? https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/executive-order-tyranny-obama-plans-to-rule-america-with-pen-phone > Can the president legally bypass Congress and rule the government by decree? The answer to the question above is: No. But you wouldn’t know that by listening to President Obama. . > the president has referred to his pen and his phone as a way of suggesting that he will use his power to issue executive orders, promulgate regulations and use his influence with his appointees in the government’s administrative agencies to continue the march to transform fundamentally the relationship of the federal government and individuals to his egalitarian vision when he is unable to accomplish that with legislation from Congress. https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/mr-obama-our-constitution-is-clear-your-executive-overreach-must-stop > there has been “a massive gravitational shift of authority to the Executive Branch that threatens the stability and functionality of our tripartite system.” . > Preventing the president from overstepping the boundaries of his constitutional authority is not about partisan politics. It is about preserving the fundamental premise of our constitutional design: That a limited government, divided into three separate branches exercising enumerated powers, is necessary to protect individual liberty and the rule of law. > We cannot allow President Obama, or any president, to ignore the constitutional limits on executive power.
1
Strykerz3r0 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Congress can't do anything until the republicans who are defending him are gone. It was the same with the TSA funding. Dems proposed 9 or 10 bills to fund them but were stopped every time by republicans because they didn't include the provisions for ICE.

BabyWrinkles Apr 1, 2026 +1
I wonder if they go as far as getting other countries to start sanctioning the U.S. until there’s proper reparations made? If you’re France or India or Australia - seems like the United States is the cause of these issues and if they walk away from the mess they made - what motivation do you have to side with the U.S. instead of Iran in that context? Especially if sanctioning the U.S. means you get your goods thru the Strait, while the U.S. threatens to pull out of NATO if… I legitimately don’t know what the orange one’s motives are beyond kowtowing to Putin.

1
CadetCovfefe Apr 1, 2026 +1
Nothing of substance has changed, but algorithmic trading and AI sentiment models, which make up a great deal of the volume in the stock market now, aren't processing headlines correctly. They read all these headlines featuring "Trump, Iran, Ceasefire" and get all discombobulated.

Canada has heaps of high-quality potash, and unlike the difficulties in getting our specific type of oil out to those who can use it, is ready to go. Don't mind our abusive ex.
1
Gentrified_potato02 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Let’s sell to everyone except our bully down south.
1
MootRevolution Apr 1, 2026 +1
I wouldn't be too glad about that. Securing potash for fertilizer is the perfect story the US government can use to tell MAGA they have to invade Canada, if those evil Canadians won't just give the US what they need.
1
mfyxtplyx Apr 1, 2026 +1
I'd like to think that would be a hard sell to the American people, but then nobody bothered selling an invasion of Iran. There has been a conspicuous lack of mention of potash when it comes to official statements of Canadian strategy toward America. If it's not potash, though, it's going to be freshwater. There is no future for Canada without preparing for American greed and belligerence.
1
polyanos Apr 1, 2026 +1
Which is why everyone is clinging so desperately to the AI bubble, regardless of real world performance, which I don't have experience in besides some silly Chatbot usage. If that thing pops, the markets are gonna drop like lead.

I would get out entirely myself (at least in my IRA where there's no tax implications) but that would guarantee an epic rally the next day as Iran makes a historic deal with Trump and AGI is officially achieved and markets all take off.

That’s because Trump is a malignant narcissist and pathological liar. No one has ever said no to him. They’ve pandered to him and humoured him his entire life. Now his recklessness and stupidity has been shown up on the world stage. Shame the whole world has to suffer as a result of his hubris.

Well, according to some popular US philosophers, we need the dicks to f*** the assholes because the assholes just want to shit over everything

Educational_Bend_941 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Iran is f****** clowning us. Jesus Christ someone needs to step in and get this guy out of office. Truman show him or something.
1
chubs66 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I'm starting to think this Trump guy might not be a very good president.
1
ILikeMagicz Apr 1, 2026 +1
US is run by a group of convicts and pedophiles.
1
shaunrundmc Apr 1, 2026 +1
Why is it that the only nation or person on this planet willing to treat Trump like the f****** dipshit he is is f****** Iran?
1
ovsa55 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Iranians make Trump look like the ass he is on every turn.
1
tonycomputerguy Apr 1, 2026 +1
I f****** hate both sides here and it drives me nuts that the Iranians are better at trolling this absolute piece of worthless shit better than the Democrats.
1
jhhertel Apr 1, 2026 +1
I cannot believe this timeline tried first to rehab MTG, and now the Iranians. I can't believe who I am ending up rooting for these days. This is crazy.
1
GreatGojira Apr 1, 2026 +22
Trump, "I personally talked to Iran and Iran said they would open the Hormuz!"
22
tonycomputerguy Apr 1, 2026 +1
"You wouldn't know the guy I'm talking to, he goes to a different school in Canada" -Trump

Boyhowdy107 Apr 1, 2026 +83
So reopening of the strait is not only dependent on the cessation of hostilities but the opinion of a regime of fanatical zealots on whether Donald f****** Trump is being a little b**** on his safe space Twitter? We're fucked.

The immovable faith vs the unstoppable farce

LiteratureMindless71 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Not something I would have guessed 20 years ago, that's for sure....although I'm sure there were plenty of signs of everything that has come to light since.

Suggestion to Iran: block US and Israeli ships and leave the rest of us alone. I could totally live that.
1
Tumble85 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Wouldn't be punishing to the U.S, we get most of our oil elsewhere and we have the capability to refine Venezuelan oil too. Unfortunately, Trump has inflicted global damage but can back out relatively easily.

Mmmm, chelow kebab. And some panir-o sabzi as a starter 🤤
1
Kradget Apr 1, 2026 +32
They haven't had a chance to stick it to us like this in decades, and our leaders walked right into it without a care while also genuinely pissing them off. I bet it takes a lot to get them to go back to the status quo ante "military action"

lifeat24fps Apr 1, 2026 +1
We're going to be paying for this dumbass Iran attack for decades. How is any country going to trust us ever again?
1
Greensentry Apr 1, 2026 +1
Easy. Stop voting for imbeciles.

doublelist87 Apr 1, 2026 +1
From a President who is a PEDOPHILE TRUMPEDO SHOULD BE PUT IN JAIL FOR RAPEING 13YEAR OLDS
1
ZaphodG Apr 1, 2026 +1
It's really sad when Iran is the grownup in the room.
1
Mother_Airline_6276 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yes! Call him out for the shit-pantsed little child he is.
1
balzstein Apr 1, 2026 +1
Let's make a deal. Trump steps down and Iran reopens the Straight of Hormuz. Everyone wins. Well, everyone except the maga racist bigots. They love their pedo president.
1
Key-Rough-8346 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Trump supporters never had to pay any consequences for Trump’s lies. Let’s see if they will leave their herd mentality when they have to suffer the consequences for once.
1
mfyxtplyx Apr 1, 2026 +1
I mean, they're paying plenty in tariffs. If you mean they never perceive paying consequences for Trump's lies, that's true. He could piss on them and they'd swear it's raining.
1
AndyDufrenne Apr 1, 2026 +1
Donald Trump is a f****** moron
1
Beginning_Rush_5311 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Can you imagine Iran pulls a "we're not opening until you release absolutely all unredacted epstein files" ?
1
To-Far-Away-Times Apr 1, 2026 +1
Trump really had to be one of the dumbest persons to have ever lived to be blindsided by this.
1
BrownWrinkles Apr 1, 2026 +1
Gee, that's shocking. I wish congress would demonstrate that level of situational awareness.
1
epicredditdude1 Apr 1, 2026 +1
It’s crazy how Trump is making Iran look like the reasonable party in this conflict.
1
CharacterPayment8705 Apr 1, 2026 +1
So f****** sad that they are making more sense than the American president. Like we really are in bizarro world.
1
ClaytonRook Apr 1, 2026 +1
Hilarious how Iran is squeezing Trump's nuts lol
1
Ripley129 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Hahahaha we suck
1

Honestly, fair.
1
Equivalent-Moment-78 Apr 1, 2026 +1
More proof that Trump shutting his mouth and not talking would help his agenda more than any other effort he could possibly make.
1
xkenn Apr 1, 2026 +1
Kinda funny that the country we are at war with is a more trustworthy news source than the president of our country. They're also doing the job that Congress couldn't... calling out and condemning his bs. What more damage can he do before congress finally takes action and pushes for his removal? They clearly care more bout their own personal wealth than the lives of people they represent.
1
Kriss3d Apr 1, 2026 +1
I do not blame them one bit.
1
Alexis_J_M Apr 1, 2026 +1
If it takes Iran speaking truth to power to turn the Republican Party against Trump I support that goal (though perhaps not the means needed to accomplish that.)
1
Irondanzilla Apr 1, 2026 +1
It’ll be shut for USA and Israel forever and deservedly.
1
dystropy Apr 1, 2026 +1
It doesn't matter much if it doesn't go to US, as long as its flowing to the world market. US only cares about oil prices, they get pretty much none of their oil from that region. Neither does Israel which gets its oil from central asia mostly.
1
Everyones_Dead_Dave Apr 1, 2026 +1
What a crazy time to alive when you're a really sorta rooting for iran
1
bl84work Apr 1, 2026 +1
I like that people are like “release the files!” And I’m like uhh they did, he’s in them, a lot, it doesn’t matter, he’s just accumulating wealth for himself and his friends
1
gratefuloutlook Apr 1, 2026 +1
F**k Trump
1
boilerdam Apr 1, 2026 +1
So, was Trump playing April Fool or is Iran? Sad thing is we’d now believe what Iran says more than Trump.
1
EvilDan69 Apr 1, 2026 +1
This looks like a pimple ready to be popped.
1
hoppertn Apr 1, 2026 +1
I’m so looking forward to Grandpa Dementias speech tonight! What shade curtains do you think he picked out for the ballroom? Will everything be coated in faux gold? I sure hope the lightbulbs are incandescent and the toilets have powerful flushes.
1
MakoSmiler Apr 1, 2026 +1
Just let all ships through except any American or Israeli ones (or associated). That would get to Trump more than anything
1
bbusiello Apr 1, 2026 +1
They could say until he’s kicked out of office. Billionaires will need a new rube to back.
1
ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp Apr 1, 2026 +1
And the world suffers because of Trump, *again*.
1
argleksander Apr 1, 2026 +1
I guess Trump and his lapdogs though Iran would just roll over after the first missles hit. Is this the dumbest war in history?
1
Away_Stock_2012 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I used to dislike the Iranian government for what they were doing to their own people, especially their crackdown on women, but now it seems like they're the good guys against American evil.
1
kittenTakeover Apr 1, 2026 +1
Maybe if we invest in more solar and wind energy this won't be such an economic problem?
1
tim_dude Apr 1, 2026 +1
It looks inflamed in the picture
1
trickortreat89 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Honestly seems like Iran is the only country in the whole world who dares to speak up against Trump. And I am kinda starting to like it in some really strange way.
1
Sidwill Apr 1, 2026 +1
Ethics, honor, morality, fairness none of these things are traits that he possesses. To sum up, he threatens to withdraw aid from a nation that is the victim of expansionist aggression because our allies wont join in on his own war of aggression/choice now that it’s apparent that his goals are unreachable. Meanwhile Ukraine, the nation he’s using as a a hostage in this instance has offered and is helping Gulf nations in countering Iranian drones. It’s truly amazing, how sad and embarrassing that this is.
1
expungant Apr 1, 2026 +1
If he really decides to leave without getting the strait open republicans don’t get to talk about gas prices ever again
