Trump’s trying to win this with LooneyTunes logic. Iran: “Closed” US: “Open” Iran: “Closed” US: “Open” Iran: “Closed” US: “Closed”😏 Iran: “Open”🤔😲

They’re now stoping even Iranian oil from leaving ports. Before, Iran was the only one allowed to ship out oil

Trump will go bomb the gulf port and say “ what are you gonna do now?” 😂

I guess we'll find out how many drones and missiles it takes to overwhelm the air defenses of an isolated Arleigh Burke destroyer?

isodevish 6 days ago +1
I assume if they manage to hit one, their gas fields will be obliterated instantly

If that happens China will supply them anti ship missiles. There is no winning for the US by escalating. It would also permanently cripple US soft power meanwhile military power can only do so much against an adversary that has very little to lose.

shootinjack 5 days ago +1
They already had Chinese anti ship missiles

Bro, Iran has been preventing the other gulf countries from shipping through the strait since early March
39
Possible_Ad_4094 6 days ago +8
It's kinda been their go-to move for decades. Blocking access to a waterway that isn't even theirs just because they were unchallenged in the region sounds like piracy to me.

xnmyl 6 days ago +11
Their ability to close the strait is why the US never tried to go to war with Iran before. Makes you question the rationale for doing it now. Overly optimistic of the results after Venezuela. Now we're all paying the price

Dark_World_Blues 6 days ago +7
USA have a defence pact with many of the GCC countries who are affected by the blockade. Iran doesn't own the strait, there are 2 other countries right at the strait, which are Oman and UAE and Iran didn't take their approval of Iran's blockade. Many other countries need the strait. Piracy includes stealing money from ships or forcing ships to pay. Iran is doing that, USA isn't doing that.

risasardonicus 5 days ago +5
This the same USA that kidnapped the president of another country by air piracy a few months ago?
5
Dark_World_Blues 5 days ago +2
No, it is a different USA

Is it piracy when your second in command sold you? No way Venezuela didn’t trade Maduro over.

Its "if im not allowed to be the only one to commerce then i will continue bombing my neighbors"

We need someone to blockade the blockaded blockade maybe that will help

Blocking Iranian ports was the next logical step, dunno what Trump got in his head yesterday with the tolling rubbish
4
NerdMachine 6 days ago +14
How is it the next logical step when they lifted sanctions on Iran oil to avoid spiking global oil prices, and now they are going to block that same oil? I don't disagree that the blockade has some arguments in favour of it, but it's not consistent with their actions at all.

Casual-Speedrunner-7 6 days ago +13
It signals a shift in strategy and longer commitment. Araghchi said Iran would open the strait with due consideration for technical limitations, referring to a minefield that may or may not be there. Global shipping giants have said despite a US blockade of the strait of Hormuz ships would not be able to pass anyway because of the mining of the strait, insurers are simply not willing to take risks and neither are ship owners. During negotiations, U.S. warships transited and were warned by the IRGC they would come under attack. Signalling that Iran isn't serious about reopening the strait.

IRGC got a taste of their own medicine. I wish Trump did that from the beginning.

BlueFalcon89 6 days ago +5
What?
5
shootinjack 5 days ago +1
Yea seriously. It made no sense lifting sanctions so they could fund their defense against us. He needs to keep this blockade tight and eventually follow through on the strikes against power plants that are utilized by the IRGC. If he does that I think we will win this thing.

Is the US using a blockade to mask an impending land invasion? It's likely the only way to avoid being attacked in transit.
-3
itsFelbourne 6 days ago +9
The blockading ships aren’t going to enter the strait. They can easily interdict ships outside of Irans effective range

NatAttack50932 6 days ago +4
What?

I think this user is asking if Trump will use the blockade as a mechanism to get US troops to make landfall in Iran.

Iran has an army of 200k with 7 reservists deep. Their command chain is also decentralized so you can't really decapitate it. You need a lot of troops to gain control.

Everyone predicted Iran would self bomb kharag island by now to spite the world and unintentionally screw over China. It’s not that simple is it. Iran is showing its one soft spot They can try to punish others while China and India aren’t impacted but freeze when they are. Unlikely decent move from Trump 6 weeks late
-10
Dark_World_Blues 6 days ago +7
Even IRGC aren't dumb enough to bomb their precious kharg island.
7
Rustic_gan123 6 days ago -8
I believe that Kharg should have been captured at the same moment Iran began blockading the strait, but as I understand it, there simply weren't enough forces in the region to do so...

Oh yes, the wisdom of Trump/Hegseth going to war with no strategy
23
Least1Difficulty 6 days ago +3
Remember that Hegseth said this would be the easiest thing ever, punching down, way down, the American way. And still lost. Imagine bragging about beating up someone half your size and disabled and then getting your ass whooped.
3
Apprehensive-Log3638 6 days ago +5
It is not a force issue. Iran just had a lot of drones and missiles. You do not want to take Kharg Island until you have destroyed the majority of Irans missile capability. The US does have Anti-Drone defenses that could knock down Iranian drones fairly inexpensively, but missile defense is expensive and not as reliable. Last thing you want are hundreds or thousands or Marines getting hit by an Iranian missile. If we were to take it, I think we would bomb Iran for another 2-4 weeks. Really degrade their capabilities. Then take the Island.
5
Rustic_gan123 6 days ago +3
Firstly, by attacking the island, Iran risks damaging its own infrastructure, secondly, the main objective is to deprive the island of Iran troops and service personnel, preventing Iranian ships from approaching, and a large number of soldiers will not be required for its occupation.

keepitfriend 6 days ago +1
Capture what? It’s the end of their pipeline.  They can just turn off the pipeline. lol, this the American 700d checkers?
1
Rustic_gan123 6 days ago +12
This is their main oil port, without which they cannot export oil on any large scale; other ports are not equipped for this.
12
keepitfriend 6 days ago +1
Yes but what value is holding it to the Americans? It’s a pipe. How much are they even exporting right now?
1
virtual_adam 6 days ago +5
China needs oil. For the first 6 weeks of this war they were getting their oil. Today we’ll see at least some attempt - short lived or not - to change that Maybe it works, maybe Florida gets nuked, just another day with mango
5
s4nid 6 days ago -1
What is the US going to do when a chinese vessel whats to go through? China has oil reserves for 90-120 days. Trump will need to get congressional approval in like 16 days for this whole excursion as the war powers act only grants 60 days without approval. Lets see the GOP voting for this war making average American lives worse by the day. How many are going to put their career on the line for this being associated with voting for this war. Meanwhile american allies in Asia (South Korea, Japan, Vietnam..) which are big trading partners are being screwed every day without their oil from the ME. This would have worked earlier in die operation. Now their own time is ticking.

lost_horizons 6 days ago +5
They will uphold the war. They won’t go against Trump, they won’t leave the military hanging like that either. To literally just screech to a halt in the situation we’re in? Nah. We’re stuck in this one.
5
s4nid 6 days ago +1
Leave the military hanging how? The US went there to start this together with Israel, nobody is forcing them to stay. If they are so eager to not leave them hanging and uphold the war they would have voted on it long time ago. They clearly don't want to their name next to the vote, they know what this means for 2026 & 2028
1
lost_horizons 6 days ago +1
I guess I just meant, in the sense that the military situation is not resolved. To just be in the middle of a war and walk away with no deal no cease-fire no nothing. I know people like to say that Trump is just going to declared victory and leave, but I don’t actually see how that is possible.
