Iran unable to find mines in Strait of Hormuz, U.S. says
The development is one reason Iran has not been able to quickly comply with the Trump administration's admonitions to let more traffic pass through the strait.

Naval mines take a while to clear, it's a slow tedious process. I don't know what kind of idiot would figure they'd be cleared in a day.

the US President?

This is clearly US psyops trying to justify why the straight isn’t open - it’s not that they are letting Iran control it, it’s that Iran doesn’t “know where the mines are”. It’s a pretty dumb take especially when it’s obvious Iran has total control over the straight

Grow_away_420 Apr 11, 2026 +18
I don't think they laid any mines at all in reality, but signaling that you did and you can't find them is a good way to keep the Stait closed even if you were being compelled to open it.
18
NarrMaster Apr 11, 2026 +6
They laid 3 mines. They are numbered 1, 2, and 879.
6
StephenHunterUK Apr 11, 2026 +3
That is how military unit numbering works in RL.

RiPPeR69420 Apr 12, 2026 +3
The sort of mines that Iran was probably using don't come with a convenient way of tracking them. They are the most basic spiky ball mines the Russians have been using since the late 1800s. C****, easy to use, hard to find or track without expensive and specialized equipment, and very destructive if they hit a ship, and at the mercy of the ocean currents.

This is from a story originally written by the NY Times - One of the first outlets to determine that the school in minab was a struck by an american tomahawk missile. I believe you're suggesting now that the most well respected newspaper in the world (or one of them) will just publish anything that a Trump administration tells them - with absolutely no editorial review.
5
Mental-Fisherman-118 Apr 11, 2026 +29
The story repeatedly states that the claim comes from U.S officials. So even if that claim is false, the reporting is accurate.
29
PleaseGreaseTheL Apr 11, 2026 +5
The NYT is not that respected. They have published garbage that is shown to have been based on hilariously lax source quality and then proven false many, many times before, especially when it comes to any wars/conflicts. I imagine next is "so cite some" as if I keep a running tally. One that comes to mind because I was writing for a tiny indie publication at the time though is when Kim Jong-Un's brother (or BIL, or half brother, or something - some variety of brother) was assassinated in Macau, and NYT republished a nonsensical South Korean claim that it was from "ninja ladies who stabbed him with needles," which they simply entirely made up with no source or evidence (and the NYT simply lifted their claim from their website and published it with that as their source). Many different instances of journalistic malpractice have happened in the Gaza war, blaming both Hamas and Israel for various things that were not-long-after proven false. They do this kind of thing all the time. Yes, they absolutely would publish nonsense they're handed by the government. Any government, in fact. How hard did they sanewash Trump in both of his campaigns? American mainstream media is largely complete f****** garbage and not respected by anyone who pays attention over the long term.
5
Spinoza42 Apr 11, 2026 +12
I think we all know the NYT has a pretty bad record when it comes to American wars, and freedom of the press in general is doing quite poorly in the US right now. So yes, that sounds about right.
12
tablepennywad Apr 11, 2026 +2
Nytimes is a joke nowadays.
2
fec2245 Apr 11, 2026 +2
Why is it obviously false? Naval mines are hard to track and they were hastily laid during a period of turmoil. Is it difficult to believe their records aren't meticulous?
2
re-tyred Apr 11, 2026 +1
Good thing it's not a curve!
1
Shot-Toe-2884 Apr 11, 2026 +9
Nobody is saying they should be cleared by now. They are simply saying Iran laid them recklessly and is having trouble finding them. US has been flying surveillance drones over the strait. They’d have noticed if Iran began a mission to recover them.
9
Dingcock Apr 11, 2026 +3
That's true but part of the process shouldn't be locating the mines they've lost...
3
ai9909 Apr 11, 2026
How hard is it to glue an airtag on a mine?
0
StephenHunterUK Apr 11, 2026 +1
How well does glue stay gluey when submerged in salt water? Also, can you even ship AirTags to Iran without violating sanctions?
1
super_fallguys Apr 11, 2026 +5
That is why, if the US President wants to clear the strait, it will take at least a month to do that and that is around the time oil prices will be high. We should have done that weeks ago instead of bombing a girls school or a bridge.
5
SP1570 Apr 11, 2026 +10
The US should have stayed the f* out of this war...
10
rowrbazzle75 Apr 11, 2026 -2
Well, the US should have stayed....umm, how far back do we want to go? 1953? Or....? Nuclear-armed power vs non-nuclear. It's what we do, all over the world.

Political_breeds Apr 11, 2026 +1
From what I've gathered Japan could do the world a favor and remove those mines in no time.

They had me up until “US says”

fec2245 Apr 11, 2026 +5
It's funny how this is 4 of the top 5 comments but when Iranian state media makes a claim listnook just accepts it. You shouldn't blindly trust any party to a conflict, they all have a narrative to push. This doesn't seem obviously pro-American though.
5
SomeBloke Apr 11, 2026 +17
Makes you appreciate how much ill will the USA has generated internationally over the past few years.
17
fec2245 Apr 11, 2026 -11
Trump obviously picked a lot of stupid and pointless fights but I think Listnook's blind faith in Iran is unique and unfounded.
-11
SomeBloke Apr 11, 2026 +4
I think it's a reach to say there's blind faith. Iran's regime has been thoroughly oppressive and I wouldn't trust anything they say either. So it's impressive that the USA has managed to match that bar.
4
Topsyye Apr 11, 2026
Oh there’s intention behind it. It is unique though I agree. Uniquely sad.
0
lazydogjumper Apr 11, 2026 +5
Thats just confirnation bias. Anyone that truly questions the US's word now very likely also distrusts Iran's. Its like if the NK said that Russia was losing a fight, you wouldnt really trust either source at face value.
5
wronglyzorro Apr 11, 2026 +3
First time on Listnook? People lap up the propaganda.

Technically they'll find them eventually.

Trump should send more Venezuelan fishermen into their strait. It’s kind of their specialty by now.

US also likes to shit talk their enemies constantly and lie very akin to Russia nowadays
6
DREDAY_94 Apr 11, 2026 +2
Was that ever not the case?
2
IndependentSessionv2 Apr 13, 2026 +1
Yes. This is different. This is not normal.
1
DREDAY_94 Apr 13, 2026 +1
US lying to us? Not really
1
IndependentSessionv2 Apr 13, 2026 +1
Okay, well in that vein, every government lies. It’s only been recently that we *lie like Russia does*.

Hias2019 Apr 11, 2026 +1
Iran: I guess now they are yours.
1
razordreamz Apr 11, 2026 +3
If they did mine. They know where they are. They let some ships transit and gave them explicit instructions on where to sail. So it’s not completely mined at lest.
3
wasbatmanright Apr 11, 2026 +4
there are 2 types of mine. Floating mines can't be tracked anymore and they are most dangerous
4
wassona Apr 11, 2026 +1
Sounds like something I’d say when I didn’t want to pick them back up
1

Oops.
1
Furious_Fred Apr 11, 2026 +1
That's what happens if you kill the persons who might have known, blow up the places the plans might have been and sink the minesweepers. Apart from clearing mines might be more time consuming then planting them..
1
cosmicrae Apr 11, 2026 +1
The US has helicopter dragged mine clearing systems. They could easily loan them to someone like Oman or the UAE, to sort out the mines.
1
sharpsicle Apr 11, 2026 +1
I don’t disagree with the US credibility being shit, but lets not pretend that magically makes Iran competent enough to make this completely false either.  I bet it’s a little of both.
1
tagillaslover Apr 11, 2026
Unfortunately the guy that knew where they were was blown up last week. Oh well
0
ozrocket Apr 11, 2026 +1
"Because it was difficult to track the small boats deploying the mines, the United States is uncertain precisely how many Iran has placed in the strait or where they are located." Yeh right, that's how it works, think about how stupid that is
1
mohirl Apr 11, 2026
They had me up until "US says". So basically there no reason to believe this.

jcrestor Apr 11, 2026
Sure, Jan.

To their defence, the records of the mines’ locations are in the Epstein files /s

“U.S. says”? I will take that with a huge heaping mountain of salt.
0
SRM_Thornfoot Apr 11, 2026 -1
The mines don't all have to be found right away. A path can be cleared and marked through the straight for the tankers to use. The rest of the mines can be located and removed later.
