Naval mines take a while to clear, it's a slow tedious process. I don't know what kind of idiot would figure they'd be cleared in a day.

This is clearly US psyops trying to justify why the straight isn’t open - it’s not that they are letting Iran control it, it’s that Iran doesn’t “know where the mines are”. It’s a pretty dumb take especially when it’s obvious Iran has total control over the straight

I don't think they laid any mines at all in reality, but signaling that you did and you can't find them is a good way to keep the Stait closed even if you were being compelled to open it.

They laid 3 mines.
They are numbered 1, 2, and 879.

The sort of mines that Iran was probably using don't come with a convenient way of tracking them. They are the most basic spiky ball mines the Russians have been using since the late 1800s. C****, easy to use, hard to find or track without expensive and specialized equipment, and very destructive if they hit a ship, and at the mercy of the ocean currents.

This is from a story originally written by the NY Times - One of the first outlets to determine that the school in minab was a struck by an american tomahawk missile. I believe you're suggesting now that the most well respected newspaper in the world (or one of them) will just publish anything that a Trump administration tells them - with absolutely no editorial review.
5
Mental-Fisherman-1182 days ago

The story repeatedly states that the claim comes from U.S officials. So even if that claim is false, the reporting is accurate.

The NYT is not that respected. They have published garbage that is shown to have been based on hilariously lax source quality and then proven false many, many times before, especially when it comes to any wars/conflicts.
I imagine next is "so cite some" as if I keep a running tally. One that comes to mind because I was writing for a tiny indie publication at the time though is when Kim Jong-Un's brother (or BIL, or half brother, or something - some variety of brother) was assassinated in Macau, and NYT republished a nonsensical South Korean claim that it was from "ninja ladies who stabbed him with needles," which they simply entirely made up with no source or evidence (and the NYT simply lifted their claim from their website and published it with that as their source).
Many different instances of journalistic malpractice have happened in the Gaza war, blaming both Hamas and Israel for various things that were not-long-after proven false.
They do this kind of thing all the time. Yes, they absolutely would publish nonsense they're handed by the government. Any government, in fact. How hard did they sanewash Trump in both of his campaigns?
American mainstream media is largely complete f****** garbage and not respected by anyone who pays attention over the long term.

I think we all know the NYT has a pretty bad record when it comes to American wars, and freedom of the press in general is doing quite poorly in the US right now. So yes, that sounds about right.

Why is it obviously false? Naval mines are hard to track and they were hastily laid during a period of turmoil. Is it difficult to believe their records aren't meticulous?

Nobody is saying they should be cleared by now. They are simply saying Iran laid them recklessly and is having trouble finding them.
US has been flying surveillance drones over the strait. They’d have noticed if Iran began a mission to recover them.

That's true but part of the process shouldn't be locating the mines they've lost...

How hard is it to glue an airtag on a mine?

How well does glue stay gluey when submerged in salt water?
Also, can you even ship AirTags to Iran without violating sanctions?

That is why, if the US President wants to clear the strait, it will take at least a month to do that and that is around the time oil prices will be high. We should have done that weeks ago instead of bombing a girls school or a bridge.

It's funny how this is 4 of the top 5 comments but when Iranian state media makes a claim listnook just accepts it. You shouldn't blindly trust any party to a conflict, they all have a narrative to push. This doesn't seem obviously pro-American though.

I think it's a reach to say there's blind faith. Iran's regime has been thoroughly oppressive and I wouldn't trust anything they say either. So it's impressive that the USA has managed to match that bar.

Thats just confirnation bias. Anyone that truly questions the US's word now very likely also distrusts Iran's. Its like if the NK said that Russia was losing a fight, you wouldnt really trust either source at face value.

That's what happens if you kill the persons who might have known, blow up the places the plans might have been and sink the minesweepers.
Apart from clearing mines might be more time consuming then planting them..

The US has helicopter dragged mine clearing systems. They could easily loan them to someone like Oman or the UAE, to sort out the mines.

The mines don't all have to be found right away. A path can be cleared and marked through the straight for the tankers to use. The rest of the mines can be located and removed later.
